    The news station didn't portray Mark accurately by saying "this is what happens when you do it wrong etc".....Mark was the man, and could handle big surf, this was a freak accident in which his leash got caught around rocks. It wasn't because he was surfing waves above his skill level. Mark Foo is a legend and deserves to be presented as one, not as an amateur jumping the gun.....ok, i'm done. RIP Mark

    • @californiakid4o8
      @californiakid4o8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with you here. I don't know MUCH about surfing in the sense that I've never surfed myself. But my husband and many of our friends do, so I can tell the difference between an amateur shithead and a guy who knows what he's doing. Obviously Mark knew what he was doing or we wouldn't have been there. There is a reason why Mavericks is an INVITATION ONLY contest, to avoid inexperienced amateurs getting themselves killed. He didn't do anything wrong here, it was, like you said, a freak accident.

      I’m sorry for the disrespect people have given you. It’s heart breaking. My dad lived in capitola for years surfing the smaller stuff in the 80’s and early 90’s. My friends still surf all around monterey and down south. None of them would risk mavericks. I have only been on the beach as a kid and teen when my grand parents lived in half moon bay, we had a great time looking at the rocks and shells on the beach. After one sneaker wave that came in soooo far we were afraid to go back. Another friend of mine her father died falling off a boat at night, they couldn’t find him and he died 😢 people Seem to forget online to treat someone the same as if they were speaking face to face.
      Thank you for sharing this video, and stay safer

    The reporter in the interview was Tony Russomano, who is an avid abalone diver, which is probably why he got assigned to cover this story. He's a nice guy - intelligent, but obviously doesn't know all the ins and outs of surfing. No big deal, his statement "didn't do it right". I'm sure he didn't mean to criticize Mark. It sounded more like he was just reaching for the right sentence to use in the heat of being on air in a live broadcast that evening. Spaulding

      @@hh1h_334 He died doing what he loved. And he knew the risks. It is ironic that San Francisco sportswriter Bruce Jenkins (who lives near Mavericks) wrote a great book called "North Shore Chronicles" . The book was about the rivalry between Mark Foo and Ken Bradshaw. They had since become good friends and flew over to Mavericks for that swell. Right in Jenkin's back yard.

      @@MrIsomer Yes, I am still in touch with Eric. I often comment on his excellent Powerlines videos. And he is familiar with the South Taranaki (Opunake) area where I live. I just turned 71 so I'm not doing much surfing these days (maybe a paddle or two on a small day). But I'm still doing photography. The surf is pumping right now. I may film tomorrow. April is our best month. It's early fall. Kind of like October in California. Light or offshore wind. Good straight long period south swells. Water is still warm. And the weather is gorgeous. I have to admit the footage you got of Foo last ride is historic. Alot of great shots from Mavs and they're still coming. Cheers mate!

    Was that the first death at Maverick’s? Many say it was a freak accident, because that was just a medium size wave at Mavericks, maybe even a little smaller, and he had definitely ridden bigger waves. Some also said it could of been because he was tired from jet lag and was not used to cold water.

    Mavericks has a back flow that some times sends water right back up the face in the form of a large speed bump that meets u at an awkard time I have only seen a few surf vids of guys who some how pull off a miraculous ride and make it over the speed bump and the water that is back pedaling against the forward progress if the wave ,its like some one pulling the rug or ur board back out from under your feet,i skate big half pipes and now big pools,and this place is way out of my league...but a wonder to observe you obviously don't master Mavs on ur first day....I just happen to learn about it thru the movie....and was captivated because in my vert skating I had a guy like frosty that help me get to a Pro level in a short time so the movie hit home,THANKS,I saw the vid of Foo and it did not look bad at all but u never know what happened under the water...piece.
