The 2023 Toyota bZ4X Is A Near Perfect Blend Of An Electric Prius & RAV4

  • #Toyota is finally ready to embrace the impending all-electric future and it all begins with the #ToyotabZ4X. The #bZ4X has a strange name, but it is the start of their new line of #BeyondZero electric vehicles that will be introduced by the end of this decade. With a single electric motor up front and up to 252 miles of range, this electric SUV has average amounts of power and range and even though it doesn't look all that impressive on paper, buyers looking to go electric from a Prius or RAV4 will find plenty to like with this bZ4X.

    Happy Friday guys! Toyota is definitely late to the EV party with this vehicle and next week, we are heading to San Diego to finally get behind the wheel of the Lexus version, known as the RZ 450e. Despite the disadvantages on paper, there is something still very intriguing about the bZ4X when you live with it for a few days. Charging times are definitely SLOW, but as long as you mostly charge at home, you won't really notice that and we also wanted to clarify that we misspoke a couple times in the video where we said the wheels reduce the range by 10 MPG, we obviously meant miles 😬

      "I don't agree that they are all that late to the EV party. Where are Honda's EVs? Mazda's? Subaru's? Mitsubishi's? Chrysler and Jeep? Even GM doesn't' have all that many currently. There aren't a lot of BEVs out there from legacy auto makers. And Toyota has a good amount in the works. Remember, they did a presentation a few months ago that they're going to have 6 BEVs in Europe out by 2026. That's not so late if they do and I think they will. I hope the next bZ they get out is the production version of the bZ Concept coupe they showed at I think the Las Vegas auto show. That was sharp looking and I like the preview of future technologies Toyota is working on. I also like the look of the Lexus BEVs that will come out and so far, Toyota's production BEVs look like their concept BEVs.

I realize that it is not objectively the "Best"... it has shorter range and chargers slower. But a lot of little things work well. The lane centering is great, the adaptive cruise is smooth...the seats are comfortable... I can use the wireless charger because its covered and the sun doesn't beat down on my phone heating it up. I personally think we need more EVs like this, a little cheaper, slower and shorter range. 90% of the general public will definitely get their day-to-day driving with 200 miles or even less, and apart from Tesla you cant really road trip with that many EVs. I still don't get why people care about performance in their family cross over, no one is buying a family crossover to go 0-60 in 3 secs and to hit up a backroad, most people just want their EVs to work, ride comfortably and be smooth. This is why vehicles like the RAV4 hybrid, CRV etc all sell well, they aren't the fastest or most exciting crossovers, but they just work, and I think Toyota has implemented that well into this vehicle, I do wish it had faster charging tho.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly. This car is a funky styled electric RAV4. Look at it besides a RAV4. It looks very similar to one, but leaner. The interior is different but nothing that radical. Toyota didn't do the BEV part well enough and they need to make some battery updates in terms of the buffer and fix the charging speed. It has plenty of good acceleration for the way most people use cars. Reviewers, including Sofyan, spend far too much time doing 0-60s. Most people don't accelerate that hard and only need some pep here and there to blend in with traffic. The performance of most Teslas isn't used by their owners and its overkill as it is in most BEVs. Much more important is the ride comfort and overall quietness of the cabin as well as useful space.

Why? I understand Toyota is the top dog and in some ways rests on their laurels. But Toyota spends a lot of time refining their cars. The overall comfort and build quality and just practical needs of working without a lot of fuss is what people want in a "SUV." the "U" stands for "utility." And even "S" in sports doesn't mean sports car. It means sporting lifestyle as they were originally created to go offroad or over mud and rough terrain while carrying a lot of stuff. Now, they're just high-riding urban crossovers, not true SUVs. Anyway, emphasizing all this speed and handling means nothing to most buyers. How they fit car seats and just what certain people prefer does. CRV and RAV 4 don't excel at or emphasize handling yet they are the top sellers in the industry. There's nothing written in stone that BEVs have to have such ridiculous performance or handle like sports cars (and Y's ride poorly IMO but the chargers and space in them attract buyers). Just because TEsla does overkill performance doesn't mean others should follow. Most Tesla drivers don't even use their performance and putt around on the highways ( at least from my observations, Tesla is not a brand I see driven hard often).

    Again thank for some of the best reviews for vehicles on the internet. You give us plain simple information about the vehicles you review and how they affect us. The slow charging times on this car give me pause to get any EV. Spending 40 minutes at a charging terminal to pick up about 100 miles in driving distance seems like a complete waste of time. I’ve read where the average EV is about 30% higher in cost when compared to the gas powered version. I’m still not sold on EV’s but do enjoy all your reviews.

      Out of curiosity how often do you drive more than 200 miles in a single day? If its less than once a month... perhaps you could rent a car for big trips? Renting a car is not that expensive and with the rate of gas cost you likely wont be losing money over time.

    Most EVs will accept their maximum charge rate at between 5% - 30% and then will taper off considerably after that. Going from 42% to 100% in ~40 minutes in coldish weather is actually not that bad and is far superior to a Chev Bolt/EUV or the Kona or Niro EVs. Most people will stop their charge at 80% anyways, when road tripping so the key metric is 10% to 80%.

    As a author and wholesaler with eight books I visit over 1,200 retail clients to deliver and/or mail books. Time is money for most all business people. For those who travel long distances and are looking for a charging station, it can be difficult and who has two hours out of their business day? I have friends who have to even stay overnight to charge, as they have run out of EV charge. Scary! In say two years we will have new solid state batteries and/or sodium batteries, or others now close to production, as things will level the playing field and many will have over 1,000 miles per charge and under ten minutes to charge to 80%; now that is what the world needs. For now my new Acura MDX delivery jet, is perfect during this transition period. Question, how many of you gas oven users are ready to junk them and be forced to electric. Ask the millions of restaurant owners and you will get a negative feedback even from those liberals in California who love cooking with gas.

    Toyota sent me a survey with lots of questions about Teslas and how I felt about the various car companies that are making EV's right now. My responses boiled down to this; I think Toyota and Lexus make quality, reliable cars, but I won't consider Toyota for my next car because I want an EV and they don't make a good EV. The funny thing is that most of the questions were about Tesla and not about Toyota. Maybe Toyota is waking up.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They've been sending out surveys all along. They are benchmarking Tesla for maybe over a year now. That's why I have to keep reminding the "Toyota is Nokia" people that Toyota is quite aware of markets and act according to their market research. However, if most of their owners say they don't prefer or desire Teslas and you are in the minority, Toyota will take that as saying the interest in BEVs in their customer base still isn't there yet. So they aren't really waking up more than continuing the course.

    • @peterfessier9780
      @peterfessier9780 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you might be right, but what I’m hoping the message they get is “I think Toyota makes quality cars, but my next car will be an EV and since they don’t make a competitive EV, I’ll be buying something other than a Toyota.” I remember now that a lot of the questions were about whether or not I was okay with Tesla changing their prices. One consideration I have is whether or not I’ll buy an EV that is a new model or buy something that has the kinks worked out. I think that is one of the ways the traditional car companies that drag their feet are going to get hurt. Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai, and Ford have crossovers/SUV’s that have already been out for years. I have to wonder if TESLA is going in the right direction just improving the model y and putting so much on the Cybertruck, which seems to me to be specialty vehicle.

    Another great review, except there were few, if any negatives. And there are lots. My BFF unfortunately bought one of these, so I've been subjected to on it numerous road trips. Comments: Complete junk interior, dash, seats, console. Complete crap infotainment. This RAV4-Prius costs $57,000 with a top spec. (no memory seats for $57K?!!) that makes it necessary to not be a RAV4 twin. It rides like the Corolla it is. It's super loud inside. It doesn't get good mileage especially if you drive 85mph like we do in the West: It gets 27mph, and it can't overtake because it's just completely gutless (onramps? ha ha). Non-adaptive headlights for $57K.
    The new BMW X1 gets 35mpg at least, is fast, sublime interior, and maxes out at $52K with adaptive suspension. This is just another totally overpriced SoCal Corolla. It's not even a soccer mom car it's so small. Toyota cheaps out again and succumbs to the Asian obsession with Anime design. It looks as stupid as the ninja throwing star Lexus SUVs.
    One last thing: Toyota reliability means the wheels fall off, and the production has to be halted. Reminds me of the Camry throttle killer lies from last decade, where Toyota falsified QA data for 13 years.

    They went too conservative with the battery and the charging speed is unacceptable. Too much piano gloss in the interior. Otherwise, it's probably a lot like the ultra-popular RAV4 in a different presentation of the interior. But it is also smoother than the RAV 4 and quieter. And the RAV4 is already quite a smooth car, especially the comfortable, supple ride. Time to get cracking on OTA updates and I think they should lose the black fenders or only offer it as an option and truly kill the piano black in the interior.
