This was a really well-rounded and articulated review! :) I found myself (surprisingly) in the 5 star camp, but that was 100% due to Mass’ character work. Not the info-dumpy world building 🙈
I was in love with Maas's Celaena in Throne of Glass and definitely didn't mind Bryce here, I also think Maas's writing is so good. I guess I just don't care for where she takes her stories when it comes to genre.
I’m currently reading the Throne of Glass series and it’s been like a solid 3 stars all the way through, and I’m really trying to decide if I want to push through 4 more books for a series that’s only decent 🤔
@@DragonArmyBooks I did! It was probably my favorite so far also. I really like the idea of the plot and the world-building has been amazing so far, but the characters are where the story is failing me. In Heir of Fire, there were 7 different peoples' POVs, but I only really read Caleana's and Manon's lol.
Bought this book last August and was my last read in 2021. I don’t necessarily love the nuanced, irreverent yet honest characters, but the seemingly deep and purposefully convoluted and scattered world-building interests me. The succession and unfolding of events didn’t really surprise me either. In fact, I predicted most of the plot lines and twists correctly. I’m rating this book four stars because I like the concepts and themes despite that I find the execution lacking for my taste. It’s not the best literary writing but I enjoyed the entertainment value for most of its parts. I will continue reading this series because I want to know more about the Asteri, their political machinations and history, and as well as whether the world-building will go deeper and make more sense or not. I’d like to see Maas improve on it.
That intro was very clever! I read Throne of Glass. The cover is awesome. Reading the premise on the back cover hooked me. But I found the book very different from that. The main character was a Mary Sue and the side characters were a lot more interesting.
And, here I was, wrongly hoping this wouldn't be another romance book set in a fantasy world....
I love Maas's writing and worldbuilding, I just wish she would do a slightly different genre!
Who was your favorite character in the book?
Hmm. Good question. Maybe one of the side characters like Juniper or Fury.

@@DragonArmyBooks That's definitely a fair criticism I think

Totally get what you mean. Did you start with The Assassin's Blade? It's a prequel and it was my favorite of the bunch.

I loved this book so much but I liked ur review. Do you like any of her other books?
I LOVED The Assassin's Blade and enjoyed Throne of Glass. That's about all though.

Exactly what I felt with this book. Premise, cover, all looks compelling. Reality? Not so much.
Haha!!! How did you know exactly the type of book I was looking for!?!!
Sounds like a hard pass! Lol
There's just so much good in the book, but yeah, you have to be able to handle some angel demon humping so... 😂
