I couldn’t help but think that, too. I think SJM likes plot twists in movies but doesn’t know how to strategically place information like that (meaning, she pretty exclusively deals in infodumps), so she resorts to her main characters not trusting her closest allies with vital information lol
I'm glad its not just me who cringes every time Bryce says that shit. Like SJM was trying to make a "fierce independent women who takes no shit from dominate men" character but it was just dumb
Okay so i read the german translation of the first book (cus i got it from my library) and there its tranlated as alpha asshole and i didnt mind that but hearing what the original wording was makes me cringe so hard ahh now i regret ordering book two in english ahaha
The only thing I enjoyed about this book was the grief she had when her best friend died. It’s so rare that a YA book actually tackles character death and I found that interesting. The final plot twist though… I was so confused how she figured it out. Even after they explained it, I was still a bit lost
I would’ve loved it had it would’ve been built up. I can’t get emotionally invested if I don’t see the relationship. It was all I needed a prequel as well. To have the relationship and live in a relationship and not be told about it but shown.
i began watching this video 3 days ago. i got about 20 minutes in and decided that i had to read this book, i haven't read a book in many years and had felt like i lost my love of reading. i bought this one on apple books, and i finished it today, 3 days later and am now watching this feature length video on the plot. I just want to say: thank you for helping me fall back in love with reading. You've unlocked something for me just by the first 20 minutes of this video and for that I am so grateful.
I unironically think Crescent City is pretty great and entertaining and not as bad as SJM's other books, like I genuinely enjoyed this book and the plottwists were massive and I had a heart attack near the end, so like it's really well written in that aspect and I was super emotionally attached. I'm happy you made this video because after like 2 centuries the second book came out and I didn't remember squat, but now I remember how awesome it was and I feel hyped all over again.
I just finished this book last week and I am so glad you made this before I dive into book two because I’ve already forgotten 😂 Also it is SO WEIRD that SJM pulled the classic “oppressed peoples want liberation but in a way that is also violent and inconvenient so we don’t like him” like HE IS RIGHT
“She’s like a deer... that can dance.” I don’t know why but that took me out 😭💀 An aside: the literal second you introduced us to the character of Hunt I was like 👀. I spy a bad boy love interest

I've watched Jenny's video about a show I've never seen, and Mike's Mic video about a show I've never seen. Time to watch this video about a book I've never read. I'm glad this type of video is just becoming it's own genre now. I need more of them.
The annoying thing about SJM OP protagonists are that these "twists" that their protagonists have are not really earned. Or hinted at in a clues sort of way (though they are set up). We the audience can only figure it out because we've read fantasy young adult novels before and they're always a super special chosen one. SPOILERS I knew Celaena was the super special faerie princess as soon as the novel said there was a lost princess. I knew Bryce would have star power. What I really don't like is the characters hiding it from the audience. It's a twist for a twist sake and because it's not really hinted at or have any red herrings like a good plot twist it's not satisfying and we only figure it out because we all know what a chosen one is regardless of the writing of the story.
But it is hinted at, multiple times. For example, when Hunt says something like his power is a burden, and she says I know, before making it a joke that she has the power to attract alphaholes. Or when they get frisky on the couch and it says that her body exploded into glorious starlight (or something like that). And I think there was something after the venom gets extracted from her leg; Hunt thinks he saw a light glowing in her eyes that was not there before. The what blinds an oracle thing is also a hint if you ask me. Though I do think the hints are subtle enough that you might not pick up on them on the first read.
Totally worth the 2-hour-watch. Especially when you are spared the 800+ pages of SJM's mediocre and repetitive writing but still like to enjoy the hilariously wild plot
I think I would actually be a Maas fan if she did one-shots, like this book could easily be a stand-alone with a decently happy ending. The fact that she cranks out progressively worse sequels just puts me off reading her works
She makes good plots but her writing is just terrible. She reuses phrases and comes up with new terms that’s supposed to make her edgy but is just cringe. The number of times she’s overused the phrase “tasted ether”...
I read acotar and the plot twist/ending/the entire last third of the book tbh was so contrived and bs that I couldn’t bring myself to read any more of her crap.
lmao at the start of the video, I was like ‘it’s so nice of you to summarise an entire book series for us’, imagine my horror at 1:56 when I realised this is only * one * book??? you need a prize for this omg
These books are so much fun, I don’t care what people say. I had a fun time reading them, and I had a fun time reliving them with you in these videos - it seems like you had some fun, too ☺️ Rock on Cari!!!
One trope I didn't know I love is when there's a murder mystery and a couple who's never met before and don't really like each other are forced to work it together. What's nice about it is that it isn't just about them becoming really close and caring for each other but plot demands that anyone they talk to can be a suspect or someone who'll betray them. They don't know each other, so even working together they shouldn't trust each other anymore than they should anyone else, and yet they do. It's also nice that this doesn't have to be romantic, it's literally any buddy cop movie and I think it's one of the most wholesome tropes out there.
I mean I don't really have a book recommendation but there is a webtoon called purple hyacinth which is exactly what the person above you described to its core murder mystery with a bit a fantasy. A brief description is about a detective who can detect lies and a deadly assassin teaming up to destroy a criminal organisation called the phantom sycthe because their society has a dark history of criminal activity that leads back to this group and have to work to find the faces behind the masks among police officers, political figure heads, circus members and possibly the royal family. The chemistry between the leads is palpable but boy do they ups and downs It's here if you want to read with that kind of trope .www.webtoons.com/en/mystery/purple-hyacinth/list?title_no=1621
Sort of adjacent to “These Violent Delights” the heirs of opposing gangs who were previously in a relationship have to work together to solve a mystery that threatens both gangs

coming back to this to say that i love how you explain plot holes by saying “~somehow~ bryce figured out XYZ”😂 it’s a perfect way to show that it doesn’t quite make logical sense while still maintaining the flow of your plot breakdown. love this video so much!!

Oh my god now I need this type of a WHOLE FREAKING DOCUMENTARY to every book in the world hahahah please keep on going, it’s such a pleasure to watch 😍
I picked up the book over a year ago because the cover was pretty and it was before I discovered WithCindy (who lost her mind reading SJM's other series). I'm about 75% of the way through and been reading this beast for over a month now. Like I read three books in between trying to read this because it was so slow. I swear SJM just doesn't have an editor because a good 200 pages could have been shaved in the first half alone
I downloaded her books because of the pretty covers as well and well, because a couple of people were recommending it. And gosh, I will forever be grateful that I found Cindy before I read that book because it definitely was not something I wanted to read.
@@safala yeah I also bought the second book before reading it because it also had a pretty cover and a lot of good reviews on goodreads. I've only progressed to 85% of the first book being read and I'm only continuing because of sunken cost fallacy

Cari!!! I thought this recap was perfect! I remember the first time I read the book when it came out, I did it in a 3-day-whirlwind-BINGE. I haven't been mentally or emotionally ready to dive back in for a second reading before starting the next book, but as you said, the plot is WILD and I knew I needed to brush up on the details because they will probably be relevant later. This felt like reading the book again with a friend that I could freak out with over the details! I feel ready to read the next book and have my mind melted. Thank you so much Cari :D

Even if you haven't read the book yourself (like myself) you're still getting taken on the wild ride that is a Sarah J Mass book with Cari being our doting guide through it all. Love the content, I'm very much looking foward to getting a video on the next book and hope we see this series continue on this channel! :)
THE ASTERI COME THROUGH ZOOM CHAT AHAHAHAHAHA IM CAKLING 😂 just read the book and remember all this pretty well, but your retelling of this is so much more fun than the book !!! Love you girl ! ❤️

Fun fact: malachim is actually the Jewish word for angels! Also, I actually really enjoyed this book! From an outside perspective, I can understand why many were not a fan. For me, the description of friendships and urban fantasy theme was a pretty cool. Sarah gets a lot of flack but ToG books from 3 and beyond and CC hold a place in my heart. I’m a sucker from over coming grief, building friendships, and OP female characters. And I liked the murder mystery and scooby doo reveal at the end. What that says about me as a reader, I’m not sure. But with all due respect, ACoTaR is really bad.

I couldn’t help but think that, too. I think SJM likes plot twists in movies but doesn’t know how to strategically place information like that (meaning, she pretty exclusively deals in infodumps), so she resorts to her main characters not trusting her closest allies with vital information lol
Very Aelin-coded.
Gotta be honest, the library with the books that keep trying to escape is one of my favorite random add ons ever
You’re making it sound much more logical than it seemed reading it 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
I was like dang this sounds good! But i think i just like cari taking about it lol
when you said “like calls to like” it triggerred so many awful memories from reading the last acotar book about nesta
Alphahole is literally the worst thing i have ever read and it continues in book 2 . Please make it stop
I'm glad its not just me who cringes every time Bryce says that shit. Like SJM was trying to make a "fierce independent women who takes no shit from dominate men" character but it was just dumb
no its actual torture
I had hope that word was only in fanfic and wattpads.
@@simplesimply3753 omg i have never read wattpads is that how things are written
Okay so i read the german translation of the first book (cus i got it from my library) and there its tranlated as alpha asshole and i didnt mind that but hearing what the original wording was makes me cringe so hard ahh now i regret ordering book two in english ahaha
Cari making sabine a coyote instead of a wolf is honestly the most underhanded and ICONIC thing she could've done and sabine deserves it ahhhhhh >o
The only thing I enjoyed about this book was the grief she had when her best friend died. It’s so rare that a YA book actually tackles character death and I found that interesting. The final plot twist though… I was so confused how she figured it out. Even after they explained it, I was still a bit lost
This is a new adult fantasy book, not young adult (ya), but I know what you’re talking about and agree 😊
Tbh it lowkey made no sense but i was just there for the ride
@@zoelouisethrashertbf I could forgive someone for thinking this was ya, it has all of the trademarks. the only difference is they say fuck
I would’ve loved it had it would’ve been built up. I can’t get emotionally invested if I don’t see the relationship. It was all I needed a prequel as well. To have the relationship and live in a relationship and not be told about it but shown.
OK BUT BRYCES PARENTS BEING CLAIRE AND PHILL IM - … ILL NEVER UNSEE IT
Ikr lol
"Sarah J Maas having a blast making a mess of things" is the perfect summary of the Crescent City series overall.
Me: I don’t know, I want to eventually read the book and I don’t want to spoil myself.
Me 5 min into the vid: Oh. It’s fine I won’t remember a thing.
Me 💀
I read the book a few years ago and watched this because I didn't remember a thing.
Me
i began watching this video 3 days ago. i got about 20 minutes in and decided that i had to read this book, i haven't read a book in many years and had felt like i lost my love of reading. i bought this one on apple books, and i finished it today, 3 days later and am now watching this feature length video on the plot.
Whenever Declan is mentioned my mind goes to Mike's Mic "techno boy toy Caleb" thing
ahaha me too! "fairy boy toy Declan"
stoppp omg
YES
I just finished this book last week and I am so glad you made this before I dive into book two because I’ve already forgotten 😂
Also it is SO WEIRD that SJM pulled the classic “oppressed peoples want liberation but in a way that is also violent and inconvenient so we don’t like him” like HE IS RIGHT
truly!!!! i was like wait why are we not team human????
“She’s like a deer... that can dance.” I don’t know why but that took me out 😭💀
An aside: the literal second you introduced us to the character of Hunt I was like 👀. I spy a bad boy love interest
Not much of a bad boy, more like a very traumatized boy 🥲
SJM: Hunter is too much, too on the nose
Also SJM: I've got the mind of a master. What's that? I got like, a master's mind or whatever
Don't mind me, just adding timestamps for my personal use
13:19 - She's like a deer... that can dance.
13:51 - 'girlllll why aren't you hereeee 🥂👯♀️'
16:46 - uMbRa mOrTis
25:07 - 'ooh 😏 micah's gonna be here?? 😈'
31:22 - hot people running around trying to solve a mystery... and there's a dog

1:17:18 - aidas's little cat voice
1:46:16 - Bryce can do mental leaps that I. Just. Can't.
1:46:39 -.... what 👁👄👁
I've watched Jenny's video about a show I've never seen, and Mike's Mic video about a show I've never seen. Time to watch this video about a book I've never read. I'm glad this type of video is just becoming it's own genre now. I need more of them.
the representation of bryce's mother and father as Phil and Clare is just ✨ PERFECTION ✨
this is exactly how i imagined them
Just keep phil away from the guns LOL
Yeah, it's weird how she does it so many times. Does she not realize how repetitive and cliché it is?
What does SJM mean?
@@WildArtistsl Sarah Jane Maas -the author
*is
But it is hinted at, multiple times.
😂😂😂
Mediocre might be a bit generous, honestly
I always read Aidas’s name as Adidas in the book so I always imagined him running around in a lil track suit or wearing bright sneakers
the sue sylvester of the sjm universe
I think I would actually be a Maas fan if she did one-shots, like this book could easily be a stand-alone with a decently happy ending. The fact that she cranks out progressively worse sequels just puts me off reading her works
That plus her writing is repetitive garbage
She makes good plots but her writing is just terrible. She reuses phrases and comes up with new terms that’s supposed to make her edgy but is just cringe. The number of times she’s overused the phrase “tasted ether”...
I read acotar and the plot twist/ending/the entire last third of the book tbh was so contrived and bs that I couldn’t bring myself to read any more of her crap.
@@somatoes4667 or “liKe cAlLs tO liKe”

OMG CARI THE DEDICATION AND EFFORT IN THIS VID?!! LOVE IT AND LOVE U! I haven't read any book of sjm so this is going to be interesting hahaha
omg yeah this series is definitely the most insane ahahha
okay queen dropping a 2 hour video on us like its ~nothing~ I see you Cari go off ✨✨
:''''''''')
lmao at the start of the video, I was like ‘it’s so nice of you to summarise an entire book series for us’, imagine my horror at 1:56 when I realised this is only * one * book??? you need a prize for this omg
Watching Cari’s videos immediately after finishing the book is my form of therapy
These books are so much fun, I don’t care what people say. I had a fun time reading them, and I had a fun time reliving them with you in these videos - it seems like you had some fun, too ☺️
Rock on Cari!!!
The chemistry between the leads is palpable but boy do they ups and downs
It's here if you want to read with that kind of trope

Sort of adjacent to “These Violent Delights” the heirs of opposing gangs who were previously in a relationship have to work together to solve a mystery that threatens both gangs

The commitment you've put into this video is so impressive, so excited to watch the rest of it! 💕
thank you :'''''')
this recap was more compelling and clear than the book. I didn't bother with reading book 2 so i'll go watch your feature film about that one too lol
Alpha hole, Prick and Territorial Fae Buzzard
The 3 horsemen of Sarah J. Maas nicknames
I can't even begin to express how helpfull this video has been to prepare me for the CC3 in 2 weeks, literally still finishing tog and was running for my life because I couldn't remember very well the plot of the CC duo that is out, until I found this video. It was like opening the little drawers in my brain that had all the information I needed to know. And the way you told it? amazinggg. The next one will be really helpful because I did not retain very much information from that. Not to mention that I love this book soooo much and it was like reading it again but in two hours, loved itttt
Listen, I need you to know that I watched the whole entire 2 hr video and was absolutely mesmerised by your voice and also the wand. Please do this again and keep the wand. It was so helpful knowing who was who and who belongs where without needing to use brain power!
hahahhah omg thank you so much
me again, girl thank you for this video, I have read this book but with your video I was able to understand things even better and move on to the second book without having to read the whole thing again, not to mention you’re narration is so funny and captivating you could do it with any book and i’d watch it gladly ✨🌷
AND OMG I CRIED SO HARD IN THE LEHABAH SCENE TOO
When Lehabah died I shuffled out to the living room and read that scene to my husband while crying. The angels saluting her while she did it was just..... sobbing
this is so. iconic. i had absolutely no desire to read this but i started the video and like, ten minutes in i was like this--this demands a bigger screen and i put it on my tv. i cannot imagine reading this. I cannot even imagine remembering these many names LET ALONE COMING UP WITH THEM. there's MISSILES IN HERE. what the fuck?
anyway delightful as always, mrs. cakes.
LMFAOOOOOOOO
the "there's a missle in there" had me exhaling aggressively out of my nose for 5 whole minutes when i read your comment 😂
coming back to this to say that i love how you explain plot holes by saying “~somehow~ bryce figured out XYZ”😂 it’s a perfect way to show that it doesn’t quite make logical sense while still maintaining the flow of your plot breakdown. love this video so much!!
I liked Bryce going from “I remember nothing about that night” to “it couldn’t have been the krisallos, the night the Pack was k*lled it didn’t rip out their internal organs” like ma’am? How in the plot-convenient amnesia did you only remember that _now?_
I like how I went through the same Jenny Nichols to Mikes Mic arc. It’s the natural progression
I did it in reverse, but safe to say I found my new TH-cam niche. Lol
Oh my god now I need this type of a WHOLE FREAKING DOCUMENTARY to every book in the world hahahah please keep on going, it’s such a pleasure to watch 😍
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It truly is incredible to find an author that makes Stephanie Meyer look competent by comparison.
@@JackedThor-so Two birds with one stone.

the thirst for Declan and the pronunciation of Nok has me in tears. i just finished House of Sky of Breath, and i can’t wait to watch your video on it because it was a wild ride!
Watched this like twice to fully remember the first book before I start reading the second. This has been a life saver girl. Can’t wait for the second book.
I'm waiting for someone to do this with the DUNE series. The whole series gets so batshit insane with a worm God who controls most of the universe and clones and it all started out as just a family going to a planet just to use and watch over the resources for the rest of the universe
My husband read it and told it to me bit by bit and i couldnt tell if he was kidding or not 😂
The TH-cam channel Quinn's Ideas pretty much does this.
I genuinely have been terrified to get into the dune series because of exactly this
Seconding Quinn's Ideas youtube channel, he does such a good job at explaining everything.

Thanks 😍
bahahhah happy to help!
I absolutely love this format of summarizing the plots to things, especially now that Crescent City is joining Pretty Little Liars and the Vampire Diaries. I think now that we have questionable ya books as well as shows, we need classic literature. I would pay money to see the plot of like jane eyre explained this way
The cat-demon voice LMAO I'm loving this video. Wasn't gonna read it but the plot made me interested and you explained it really well 💛
I am just about reading the second book. and I my lord I really needed the recap. I did forget about so much stuff that was happening. Thanks for all the effort you put into this video. Had a fun time hering you explain the plot and the levels of friedship.
this has become such a comfort video tbh i rewatch it all the time
i ADORE video essays and books in their own light, so to see my favorite booktuber combine it is so amazing. i’ve also never been the biggest fantasy fan, but things like this genuinely make me want to pick it back up.

Wow I never expected a 2 hour video from you Cari, I'm going to watch this during my break between classes. I'm sure it will be a great time✨
definitely pace yourself hahahah this video is a lot!
these videos are freaking amazing cause I really didn't feel like doing a cc reread for the new book book coming out in a few days

i listened to the audiobook it was definitely easier to get into! but I get it
I have to be honest, I cried my heart out with this book and a side effect of watching this video is that all those emotions just came back. I adored Bryce and Danika and their friendship until the very end was so beautiful.
the effort put into this video is immaculate. mike's mic video series was AMAZING and sincerely looking forward to this one😌
Literally every big blow/surprise/sad thing that happened I cried AGAIN hearing you talk about it 😂❤️

Now I know how I‘ll spent quarantine day #5 😅
I also watched both videos that inspired you to do this!
Somehow I‘m a sucker for those types of video. There‘s something really relaxing about sitting there with a cup of tea and listening to someone explaining a series/book. Especially if I‘m familiar with the topic - so interesting to see, what I missed when I watched it.
hahahhaha thank you for being hereee!
i can't believe i just watched 2 hours of video about a book i've never read and probably will never read. great video, cari!! i really enjoy this ❤
Thank you so much for this video. I read the physical copy along with your video because I didn’t quite grasp what I was reading but from your wand pointing and enthusiasm I was able to understand and really enjoy it!
I've got a feeling, that I wouldn't like reading this book...but I absolutely LOVE this explanation. Cari you really have a talent for making this interesting and funny. Thanks so much for this, enjoyed it so much!
IS THIS 2 HOURS OF CARI I SEE? I have literally NO intentions of ever putting my hands on a SJM book but you better believe that I will watch this video in normal speed.
That's how much I love Cari's videos. Cari you are literally rhe only youtuber that I have notifications on so I can knkw whenever you upload, and probably again the only one that I actually watch every video they upload.
this video was so fun, it made me want to read the book, which then reminded me how little i jive with sjm's writing but i love how the woman is living her best life with these batshit concepts that she gets publishing deals for
This is brilliant! I’m almost done with House of Sky and Breath and just realised I very much needed a summary beforehand 😂✨

Sometimes you convince me that I thought too poorly abt SJM works and that I would rethink reading her books again in hopes it’s as spellbinding and captivating as these videos make it out to be

I read this book a couple months ago and completely forgot half the characters and most of the plot, love the video! Very helpful and entertaining.
That alpha hole meaning was not what I pictured, idk if I should feel glad, horrified or disappointed
Lol I’m so invested in your story-re-telling of this (never read any of these books) that I’ve been brought to tears MORE THAN ONCE! Thanks for these fun videos.
