I watched an interview of Edgar from a few years ago. Their father & grandfather were musicians too. Since they couldn't go outside much in Beaumont, Tx because of the heat they stayed indoors & made music instead.
Edgar and his brother Johnny are the two most talented albinos ever, next you got to react to Johnny and Edgar playing together performing Tobacco Road live Johnny Winter is one of the best guitarists of all time!
Agreed 100%! Also, the only other albino vocalist/artist I know of is the awesome lead vocalist for Storyville: Malford Milligan. They were a group out of Louisiana that also featured SRV's Double Trouble after his untimely passing, RIP. Here's a link to their great Austin City Limits live performance: th-cam.com/video/Wu3vkHwxEaE/w-d-xo.html (if the link is blocked it's easy to find in a search) Cheers!
They called Frankenstein exactly because it was a smash of different jams, Edgar just kept on adding parts till we have this unforgettable monster of a song, It's 50 years later and it still brings it.
Part of the wonder of the song was how pieced together it was, a real "monster" to get it together in the studio. Edgar's look is actually real; he (and his equally musical brother, Johnny) were both born with Albinism.
I was 31 when this came out and it was one of the biggest hits of the 70s along with Lynyrd Skynyrd s Freebird and Iron Butterfly's Inagodadavida! Edgar recently, in 2023, won a Grammy for his album of blues music as a tribute to his brother, the famous guitar player, Johnny Winter! Both brothers were albino, thus the blond hair and eyelashes!
I had the great pleasure of seeing both Johnny and Edgar Winter multiple times, including with each other. I saw Edgar during this period with this band when they debuted this here in NYC. Great times man. By the way, when groups "jam" there is generally no beginning, middle or end, nor are there distinct melodies each member abides by. This is a well crafted song with certain areas and amounts of improvisation.
Edgar Winter is also a true albino that's his natural hair color and he does have pink eyes in fact they titled their album they only come out at night because he has Sun sensitivity because of his skin and eyes
Great pic guys Edgar winner was a phenomenal musician still is. He pulled his to band together in a short period Of time and they didn't stay together very long. Best Rick Derringer only guitar and Dan Hartman on the base and they're killing it. Chuck ruff was a drummer who is a top-10 drummer with everybody he played with. Much talent in this band and Edgar was phenomenal.
This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.
The Winter brothers , Johnny and Edgar, grew up in Texas, not an optimal environment for albinos. So they spent a lot of time indoors and learned to master many instruments. So the story goes. Deep South albinos, so white they were black with soulful talent to match. Johnny was in a class by himself, gruff, tough, unique, super flash guitar, but precise and somehow tasteful. Edgar played on his first albums then went off on his own with White Trash. Timeless soulful R&B, never to be duplicated. Those days are gone, "music" now is all digital formulaic drool. Both brothers growled their vocals although Edgar had considerable range. The only UK equivalent that I can think of was Ray Davies, a gent in person but onstage a wildman who growled like a Grizzly Bear
Edgar Winter is one I shouldn't like but I do. 4:22 My dogs always howl at Edgar too. LOL!! I was in my 20's back then those were 'Funky' times. Smash it against the amp, Edgar!!
The title came out because the were jamming out all day in the studio. Back then used tape. So they cut it all up and assembled a piece of music. Like Franklinstein, hence the name.
I saw that on BBC 2, maybe when it was first broadcast, or soon after. My big brother's TV-control-concession (from our parents) was watching 'Old Grey Whistle Test', and I stayed up with him watching it. My bro' had a serious HiFi habit. To fund his habit he'd run disco's using his HiFi, and two record decks. He played a studio version of Frankenstein (sub 5 min) to end every disco.
