True story: back in the late 90's I was driving to a Phish concert when Frankenstein came on the classic rock station I was listening to. It had been years since I had heard it and had forgotten about it. I was so happy to rediscover it. I met my old college roommate at the concert and told him this. He had also forgotten the song and we spent the time before the concert talking about how great it was. After performing their show Phish came out and for an encore played...Frankenstein. I really can't put into words how blown away we were.
RIP Chuck Ruff, the drummer . Grew up in the same town with him way back when the Chuck Ruff Group was playing local bars .So talented . His little sis is one of my closest friends to this day .

wow, there's a blast from the past. Seems like they've been pretty much scrubbed from classic rock radio/history haven't they. A lot of their songs became standards on television, and covered by Vegas types of the era.. your Sinatras, Sammy Davis jrs, Wayne Newtons. prolly why they lost they lost a lot of their rock cred. Even my mom could be overheard singing one of their tunes during housework. lol. Doesn't mean they weren't good. Just co-opted by our parents generation for some reason. "You Made Me So Very Happy" another good one.

Enormous guitar talent Rick Darringer is playing with him. Played with Edgar and Johnny, among many others. Check out Rick's song Rock and Roll Hoochie coo. Johnny also did a version of it which is also great. Johnny looks like Edgar, also albino.
Agreed, and well said. A&A, you two mention BANGERS, well Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" fits that category, perfectly. It's the best-named R&R song of that era, and if you do a lyrical analysis you might be surprised to find the song isn't exactly what you think it's about. "Free Ride" is also a BANGER, and worth your time. Keep up the good work.

So I saw Edgar Winter in february of 2020 just before the quarantine hit he's 73 yrs old now. and he rocked it out!!!!! still just as good-probably even better. i was blown away. We saw him on the 70's rock and romance cruise- great time with lots of performers from the 70's
Hey guys, great reaction! I think it's important to fully appreciate that the talent on display here goes far beyond mere raw musical ability. The synth itself was an all-analogue beast, with all discrete circuitry and not a microchip in sight, so all sounds are being produced in real time and with no presets of any kind. Nowadays we get used to simply pressing the software setting what says "Make that Edgar Winter Frankenstein Sound" and then pretty much forget it. Also, those synths were notorious for going out of tune as the electronics heated up (and cooled down, as one famous prog band's keyboardist found out). This may sound like more trouble than it's worth to us now, but it did mean that he was making true music with that thing - making music directly out of the laws of physics, and battling nature itself to make noises that no-one had ever heard before at the time. On top of all that he was carrying around a keyboard which must have weighed literally half a ton. Probably would have had a very heavy metal chassis.

YES! Another great guitarist in his own right. Edgar Winter took a back seat in Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. Just shows how talented this band was. And don't get me started on Johnny Winter. One of the best blues artist hands down.
They didn't react to the "short radio version", aka radio edit. They did the original album version, and I, for one, wasn't disappointed in the least bit. Not quite sure where you're coming from.
Montrose had a band in the mid 70's named after him that had a couple of banger hits (Bad Motor Scooter and Rock Candy come to mind). Both Derringer and Montrose appear on the album version. I believe Derringer was a producer on the album. Saw Montrose open for Lynyrd Skynyrd in Indy. He jammed with them on Free Bird for the encore. If I'm not wrong, Sammy Hagar was the lead vocalist for Montrose at that time.
The look on your faces in the end was epic. Your heads stopped banging and you just sat there with your mouths open. This is a very mesmerizing video. EW was awesome. One of my all time favorites.
Guitarist Rick Derringer also played with Edgar's brother Johnny in the group "Johnny Winter And" for one album. Edgar also plays on Johnny's 1969 album "Second Winter". That portable keyboard was the first of it's kind, which Edgar called his Keytar.
Rick goes even further back as a fourteen year old he and his band the McCoys had a huge hit with Hang On Sloopy. Johnny and Edgar Winter a couple of genius". Johnny one of the best bluesmen of the 70's and 80's. Saw Johnny with Muddy Waters back in the 70's. Very memorable show.
After the drums, I expected Edgar to go off screen and when they came back he'd be staining a chippendale side chair he just finished making. They'd go away again and when they returned he'd be glazing the Faberge egg he just created and the final time they come back, he's putting the finishing decorations on the 7 layer cake cake he just baked.

I once was walking through Astor Square (if you're familiar with the cube sculpture) in NYC in 1982 - there was a 'busker' wailing away on a little keyboard kit and some assorted percussion. It was Edgar Winter. There were maybe a dozen of us pedestrians who stopped to listen and omfg it was effing amazing. I'll never forget it. BTW, Johnny Winter is a completely different trip - a legend in his own right. My favorite Johnny Winter is called Stranger. check it out

Imagine young fellas, a teenager in the 70s, with a least 50 bands. Different style, different instrumentation, completely different stage presence unique to each band. Listening to new songs and knowing the band by their sound. It's the decade of the highest level of talented artists in our history. And 5 to 10 bucks for a ticket. Anywhere from 3 to 8 bands doing a full set.
I'm admittedly a Robin Trower fanboy, but he and Edgar Winter must have the sound travel thru their souls and vibrate their bones to be able to create such music. Incredible talent.
Pretty sure that this performance replaces the album's guitarist, Ronnie Montrose, with producer/guitarist Rick Derringer. Derringer scored a hit of his own with Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo, definitely worth checking out.

Lance Alrick I remember him walking down my hometown of Union City, Indiana when I was a little kid. His band was just becoming famous. He still tours and I saw him last summer. Yes that is Rick Derringer on guitar, Johnny Winter is Edgar’s older brother and looks like Edgar back in the day it was rumored that Rick was their half brother, but Rick had success with the song Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo which was an old Johnny Winter song, another song that got a lot of radio play by Edgar was Free Ride
I was privileged to have seen this show a couple of times back then it was even more impressive in person they had smoke machines strobe lights mirror ball the colored lites made Edgar's hair change colors it was fantastic. These guys were all successful with their own careers as well.

I guess my head is still stuck in 70s rock mode, which I think most of A&A watchers highly recommend mid/late 60s to most of the 70s. And despite the fact that the Bee Gees are mostly known for their disco music, they had some wonderful songs in the very early 70s
It's so frustrating that none of the reactors ever react to Johnny Winter, he was one of the best Blues Players ever and he could rock like no bodies business. Come on guys ... listen to him do the Stones "Let It Bkleed" to get an idea of what a talent he was.
I've watched this reaction video a number of times now and this last time I noticed, for the first time, that the clown horn is on the drummer's kit and he's squeezing it. I always thought it came from Edgar's 'Elfin Magic' but I was wrong. If you watch very clearly you can see the drummer squeezing a clown horn along with all else he's doing! Amazing!
Another mindblowing layer, @Andy&Alex: The thing you need to know about Edgar's keyboard is that it's the controller for his ARP 2600 synth, which is the console behind him he makes the "space noises" with. Not sure what edition, but the keyboard looks like a 1st edition 2600 he had modified. This is a monophonic synth (an amazing one), and he's able to get that whole range of sounds (and roles) out of it for the one performance. *No presets at all.* So he's getting that nasty, funky synth bass, which also serves as a lead, which is damn fine synth programming. From his starting point, he's able to bring in square-wave modulation (not an arpeggiator, really) to flutter between two notes at a certain rate for when he first comes off the timbale kit, then he's able to invoke the noise generator for the thunder parts, put on a mad scientist show, and then invoke a different modulation to get the freaky chirpy electric sound that descends into warbles-which he then uses the filter slider to *rhythmically* jam with the drummer with all the whoops and wheezes, before he finally goes back to the timbales to finish it out. Pulling off all of those sounds out of one starting setup live is a real high-wire act. I mean, on top of his dexterity, his "BBQ coma-tasty" chops on multiple instruments, he gets every single bit of potential out of that Cadillac beast of a synth. For this appearance it was probably at least 1/3 of their soundcheck. Trust me, a 2600 is one of those synths where so much can go wrong so easily, even if you baby it. You're trying to create a sound, get distracted for one second and accidently hit a switch or move a slider 3mm while you're not looking at it, and you're like "Fuck, where did the sound go?" There's an hour gone, if you're not paying close attention to the signal chain. The breadth and depth of Edgar's talent is absolutely staggering. I would *NOT* have wanted to be Edgar's keyboard tech on the road.
This is from a BBC-tv show in the UK (The Old Grey Whistle Test) in 1973, so hat's off to the BBC for the camera work, picture quality and audio from all those years ago.
Alex, well rather than Lord of the Rings, the Musical, that was Dr. Frankenstein and Frankenstein's Monster, the Musical -- condensing the book/movie into just over 9 minutes of music.
Johnny Winter was more of a straight up Texas bluesman at heart, and a damn good one. Check out some of his earlier solo work on the National resonator for proof of that. He could also rock, and did several more commercial friendly rock oriented albums featuring his Gibson Firebird. Rick Derringer was a regular feature on both Johnnys and Edgars stuff, a phenomenal rock guitarist in his own right.

Rick Derringer was the guitarist on the video who had his own hit, “Rock n Roll Hootice Koo”. But Johnny Winter also had his own band. Just a bunch of concentrated talent.
I think the guitarist on the video was Ronny Montrose. Rick Derringer was the producer and played with Edgar in a bunch of his different groups, as well as playing with Johnny Winter. And he also did Hang On Sloopy when he was with the McCoys.
Johnny Winter, musician extraordinaire & all of his excellence, was legally blind. Let that sink in. He was amazingly stupendous musically speaking. RIP Mr. Winter.
RE: keyboard effects and the things they can do, and bands following this live: No doubt: this was GREAT. BUT... You think that was intense? Check out what Carl Palmer did on "Toccato" from BRAIN SALAD SURGERY. Drum synth solo in early 70's, still ahead of its time. And ELP's whole show would make this look like a game of patty-cake! Keith Emerson rocking the organ, stabbing it with knives, catapulting it off the stage...the Hendrix of keyboards!
Great post. Keith Emerson may have been "only" a keyboardist but he was way more of a showman. When Edgar got down on his knees to beat on his keyboards it looked more like an homage to Keith abusing his Hammond organ. Wikipedia gives Edgar credit for being the first use a strap on keyboard, but I am pretty sure Keith was using a hand held (no strap) a few years before--plus it shot fire out the end like a Roman candle. Not to mention Keith at the California Jam rotating in up in the air on a grand piano while it spun around like a pig on a spit. Edgar is great but with acts like ELP and Alice Cooper, he wasn't so much ahead of his time as much as trying to keep up with the Jones. Ah, the seventies!
Welcome to music we listened to in high school in the 70s. This was what we came to expect from bands in the early 70s. We had Yes, The Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, of course The Rolling Stones and everything in the top 40. Frankenstein was a song best listened to on a great stereo after enjoying herbal cigarettes. They panned the sounds back and forth, but it filled the entire room with sound. It felt like the music was more than just sound, it felt so full. Loved your jaws dropped open...hahahaha

True story: back in the late 90's I was driving to a Phish concert when Frankenstein came on the classic rock station I was listening to. It had been years since I had heard it and had forgotten about it. I was so happy to rediscover it. I met my old college roommate at the concert and told him this. He had also forgotten the song and we spent the time before the concert talking about how great it was. After performing their show Phish came out and for an encore played...Frankenstein. I really can't put into words how blown away we were.
RIP Chuck Ruff, the drummer . Grew up in the same town with him way back when the Chuck Ruff Group was playing local bars .So talented . His little sis is one of my closest friends to this day .

wow, there's a blast from the past. Seems like they've been pretty much scrubbed from classic rock radio/history haven't they. A lot of their songs became standards on television, and covered by Vegas types of the era.. your Sinatras, Sammy Davis jrs, Wayne Newtons. prolly why they lost they lost a lot of their rock cred. Even my mom could be overheard singing one of their tunes during housework. lol. Doesn't mean they weren't good. Just co-opted by our parents generation for some reason. "You Made Me So Very Happy" another good one.

Enormous guitar talent Rick Darringer is playing with him. Played with Edgar and Johnny, among many others. Check out Rick's song Rock and Roll Hoochie coo. Johnny also did a version of it which is also great. Johnny looks like Edgar, also albino.

It's the best-named R&R song of that era, and if you do a lyrical analysis you might be surprised to find the song isn't exactly what you think it's about.

So I saw Edgar Winter in february of 2020 just before the quarantine hit he's 73 yrs old now. and he rocked it out!!!!! still just as good-probably even better. i was blown away. We saw him on the 70's rock and romance cruise- great time with lots of performers from the 70's

Hey guys, great reaction! I think it's important to fully appreciate that the talent on display here goes far beyond mere raw musical ability. The synth itself was an all-analogue beast, with all discrete circuitry and not a microchip in sight, so all sounds are being produced in real time and with no presets of any kind. Nowadays we get used to simply pressing the software setting what says "Make that Edgar Winter Frankenstein Sound" and then pretty much forget it. Also, those synths were notorious for going out of tune as the electronics heated up (and cooled down, as one famous prog band's keyboardist found out). This may sound like more trouble than it's worth to us now, but it did mean that he was making true music with that thing - making music directly out of the laws of physics, and battling nature itself to make noises that no-one had ever heard before at the time.
On top of all that he was carrying around a keyboard which must have weighed literally half a ton. Probably would have had a very heavy metal chassis.

YES! Another great guitarist in his own right. Edgar Winter took a back seat in Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. Just shows how talented this band was. And don't get me started on Johnny Winter. One of the best blues artist hands down.
They didn't react to the "short radio version", aka radio edit. They did the original album version, and I, for one, wasn't disappointed in the least bit.
Not quite sure where you're coming from.
Montrose had a band in the mid 70's named after him that had a couple of banger hits (Bad Motor Scooter and Rock Candy come to mind). Both Derringer and Montrose appear on the album version. I believe Derringer was a producer on the album. Saw Montrose open for Lynyrd Skynyrd in Indy. He jammed with them on Free Bird for the encore. If I'm not wrong, Sammy Hagar was the lead vocalist for Montrose at that time.
Edgar Winter is a sweet spirit, he is still performing as well as ever.
The look on your faces in the end was epic. Your heads stopped banging and you just sat there with your mouths open. This is a very mesmerizing video. EW was awesome. One of my all time favorites.
Guitarist Rick Derringer also played with Edgar's brother Johnny in the group "Johnny Winter And" for one album. Edgar also plays on Johnny's 1969 album "Second Winter". That portable keyboard was the first of it's kind, which Edgar called his Keytar.
Derringer also has its own great album.
Rick goes even further back as a fourteen year old he and his band the McCoys had a huge hit with Hang On Sloopy. Johnny and Edgar Winter a couple of genius". Johnny one of the best bluesmen of the 70's and 80's. Saw Johnny with Muddy Waters back in the 70's. Very memorable show.

I once was walking through Astor Square (if you're familiar with the cube sculpture) in NYC in 1982 - there was a 'busker' wailing away on a little keyboard kit and some assorted percussion. It was Edgar Winter. There were maybe a dozen of us pedestrians who stopped to listen and omfg it was effing amazing. I'll never forget it. BTW, Johnny Winter is a completely different trip - a legend in his own right. My favorite Johnny Winter is called Stranger. check it out

Imagine young fellas, a teenager in the 70s, with a least 50 bands. Different style, different instrumentation, completely different stage presence unique to each band. Listening to new songs and knowing the band by their sound. It's the decade of the highest level of talented artists in our history. And 5 to 10 bucks for a ticket. Anywhere from 3 to 8 bands doing a full set.
I'm admittedly a Robin Trower fanboy, but he and Edgar Winter must have the sound travel thru their souls and vibrate their bones to be able to create such music. Incredible talent.

Pretty sure that this performance replaces the album's guitarist, Ronnie Montrose, with producer/guitarist Rick Derringer. Derringer scored a hit of his own with Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo, definitely worth checking out.

Definitely one of the best shows ever. They used to play full episodes of it on VH1-Classic 10-15 years ago. I really wish they would issue those full shows on DVD.

Lance Alrick I remember him walking down my hometown of Union City, Indiana when I was a little kid. His band was just becoming famous. He still tours and I saw him last summer. His guitar skills are still amazing. He was with a small group called the McCoys when they made their first hit song, Hang on Sloopy. His guitar skills are still amazing.
@@retirebear3551 Rick actually had two hits with Hang On Sloopy, a #1 hit in 1965 with the McCoys (I think it was session players with Rick's vocals), and then ten years later a minor hit in 1975 as a single from Rick's album Spring Fever - this version featured steel drums and marimba (Edgar Winter).

Rick Derringer wrote Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. He was in Johnny Winter's band at the time which is why JW played it "first".
Derringer was writing and producing for both brothers.
I was privileged to have seen this show a couple of times back then it was even more impressive in person they had smoke machines strobe lights mirror ball the colored lites made Edgar's hair change colors it was fantastic. These guys were all successful with their own careers as well.

Wayne wearing my Crack shirt. Going into the recording tent some guy stopped me and said, "Crack the Sky! Surf City, here come the sharks!". My friend stopped me and said, "Do you know who that was?" I replied, "Obviously a good dude if he knows Crack the Sky." He said, "That's Chris Lord-Alge. Engineer for Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, James Brown and more!"

I've watched this reaction video a number of times now and this last time I noticed, for the first time, that the clown horn is on the drummer's kit and he's squeezing it. I always thought it came from Edgar's 'Elfin Magic' but I was wrong. If you watch very clearly you can see the drummer squeezing a clown horn along with all else he's doing! Amazing!

Another mindblowing layer, @Andy&Alex: The thing you need to know about Edgar's keyboard is that it's the controller for his ARP 2600 synth, which is the console behind him he makes the "space noises" with. Not sure what edition, but the keyboard looks like a 1st edition 2600 he had modified. This is a monophonic synth (an amazing one), and he's able to get that whole range of sounds (and roles) out of it for the one performance. *No presets at all.* So he's getting that nasty, funky synth bass, which also serves as a lead, which is damn fine synth programming. From his starting point, he's able to bring in square-wave modulation (not an arpeggiator, really) to flutter between two notes at a certain rate for when he first comes off the timbale kit, then he's able to invoke the noise generator for the thunder parts, put on a mad scientist show, and then invoke a different modulation to get the freaky chirpy electric sound that descends into warbles-which he then uses the filter slider to *rhythmically* jam with the drummer with all the whoops and wheezes, before he finally goes back to the timbales to finish it out. Pulling off all of those sounds out of one starting setup live is a real high-wire act.
I mean, on top of his dexterity, his "BBQ coma-tasty" chops on multiple instruments, he gets every single bit of potential out of that Cadillac beast of a synth. For this appearance it was probably at least 1/3 of their soundcheck. Trust me, a 2600 is one of those synths where so much can go wrong so easily, even if you baby it. You're trying to create a sound, get distracted for one second and accidently hit a switch or move a slider 3mm while you're not looking at it, and you're like "Fuck, where did the sound go?" There's an hour gone, if you're not paying close attention to the signal chain. The breadth and depth of Edgar's talent is absolutely staggering.
I would *NOT* have wanted to be Edgar's keyboard tech on the road.
This is from a BBC-tv show in the UK (The Old Grey Whistle Test) in 1973, so hat's off to the BBC for the camera work, picture quality and audio from all those years ago.
The "Space Noises" was Frankenstein's monster coming to life.
Alex, well rather than Lord of the Rings, the Musical, that was Dr. Frankenstein and Frankenstein's Monster, the Musical -- condensing the book/movie into just over 9 minutes of music.
Johnny Winter was more of a straight up Texas bluesman at heart, and a damn good one. Check out some of his earlier solo work on the National resonator for proof of that. He could also rock, and did several more commercial friendly rock oriented albums featuring his Gibson Firebird. Rick Derringer was a regular feature on both Johnnys and Edgars stuff, a phenomenal rock guitarist in his own right.

Rick Derringer was the guitarist on the video who had his own hit, “Rock n Roll Hootice Koo”. But Johnny Winter also had his own band. Just a bunch of concentrated talent.
I think the guitarist on the video was Ronny Montrose. Rick Derringer was the producer and played with Edgar in a bunch of his different groups, as well as playing with Johnny Winter. And he also did Hang On Sloopy when he was with the McCoys.

This right here. The wall of electronics that surrounded Emerson on stage was something to behold.
The synthesizer would never have become anything like it did in rock music without Keith Emerson leading the way. Just check out "Lucky Man."
Johnny Winter, musician extraordinaire & all of his excellence, was legally blind. Let that sink in. He was amazingly stupendous musically speaking. RIP Mr. Winter.
I got to open for this band in my band in Virginia in 1992. They were fabulous! The mix on this vid does not do it justice.

Great post. Keith Emerson may have been "only" a keyboardist but he was way more of a showman. When Edgar got down on his knees to beat on his keyboards it looked more like an homage to Keith abusing his Hammond organ. Wikipedia gives Edgar credit for being the first use a strap on keyboard, but I am pretty sure Keith was using a hand held (no strap) a few years before--plus it shot fire out the end like a Roman candle. Not to mention Keith at the California Jam rotating in up in the air on a grand piano while it spun around like a pig on a spit. Edgar is great but with acts like ELP and Alice Cooper, he wasn't so much ahead of his time as much as trying to keep up with the Jones. Ah, the seventies!

Welcome to music we listened to in high school in the 70s. This was what we came to expect from bands in the early 70s. We had Yes, The Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, of course The Rolling Stones and everything in the top 40. Frankenstein was a song best listened to on a great stereo after enjoying herbal cigarettes. They panned the sounds back and forth, but it filled the entire room with sound. It felt like the music was more than just sound, it felt so full. Loved your jaws dropped open...hahahaha
Edgar Winter Group "Free Ride." One of the greatest rhythm guitar riffs of all time. Killer song and vocals, too.
