The name came from the fact this was a bunch of different "songs" Edgar was working on. He put all these different pieces together in one song. So the name Frankenstein is very fitting.
I heard on an interview once that this song came about because the band was doing an album and felt it was done. The label came to them and said they owed them another song and the discussion got a little heated before the band said “Fine” and went back and put this together. In was kinda done in spite but it turned out to be a hit. The white haired guy is Edgar Winter and he is an albino. As a child he was somewhat sickly so instead of sports like the other boys he was in the house learning all he could about making music. He knows how to play a wide variety of instruments and likes to do it in his songs. By the way that keyboard he has or as it’s sometimes called a Keytar was something that Edgar is credited with developing.

The little guy in white playing guitar is Rick Derringer who's had a few hits of his own.
I saw him open for Heart back in 1977. Man he was so loud for a small arena.
Edgar is incredibly talented, the Guy can do it all! His Brother Johnnie is also very talented, he passed away recently. When Frankenstien hit Radio Waves it blew everyones mind, no one had ever heard anything like it...Masterpiece! This song is MONSTEROUS... The reason Egar was banging on the keyboard was to get everything vibrating and creating feedback, in turn it allowed him to control the feedback and create all those crazy sounds.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

This is from their album "They Only Come Out at Night". When this song was released, most radio stations would only play the short version and every now and then they would play the long version (similar to what you are listening to here) which, IMO, was much better. They do sing on other songs on the album. Another one to check out from the same album is 'Free Ride'.

Edgar is still active and in fact recently released an album titled "Brother Johnny" which won a Grammy as the best blues album of 2023.
The ending reminds me of every college art exhibit I attended with multi-media abstraction and chaotic combinations. I applaud his efforts to make the show extra-special.

Great reaction, you two !!! The actual story is that Edgar got his new ARP Synthesizer, but he got bored after taking only 2-3 lessons, so they went into the studio and played for hours and hours while he experimented with it. They recorded everything they did. When they were done, they gathered up all the tape and began cutting and splicing excerpts together until they came up with the general version that they wanted to release ... which was quite a bit shorter that this version is here ... and the name became immediately obvious to them. Frankenstein's monster was assembled from many different parts to form 1 monster, and so was this track. Update: I forgot to mention that the album version is much more cohesive and "cool", not dwelling on some parts as they do here, and things like the sax solo and the "freak-out on the synthesizer" weren't included, so it was much more "radio-friendly". It was also VERY popular at the time ... no one had ever heard anything like it.

There are two Brothers Edgar and Johnny Winter, extremely talented Musicians. Just for your information Frankenstein was the name of the Dr who made the Monster. the Monster never had a name.

Edgar was eclectic in his music to be sure. His catalogue is quite diverse. His biggest album (i believe) was 'They Only Come Out at Night'. The song Free Ride was a radio friendly hit back in the day.

Edgar & his late brother, Johnnie, were both legally blind due to albinism. As albinos, their formative years were spent indoors, where they focused on and developed their music artistry. Both brilliant musicians.
Edgar and brother Johnny who is a great blues guitarist and not in this video jammed together and Tobacco Road is great video of them live together. There are actually lyrics and singing in it. lol
There were loose reel tapes laying around the studio room in a mess and the drummer said it looked like Frankenstein and they joined the tapes together and got the idea for the song

This video is from a British music show called "The Old Grey Whistle Test' BBC 2, which used to be presented by a guy called 'Whispering Bob Harris' due to his rather calm and quiet introductions to the bands.
Bob Harris moved to radio afterwards and is still a much loved proponent of progressive music in the UK.
The show itself ran from the early 70s to the mid 80's.
So much talent.awesome.

Frankenstein was the "Doctor's" name, not the "monster" (dead body he tried to bring back to life). ...the instrumental was called Frankenstein because of it's "craziness" etc.

I believe Edgar himself said that the name came from the fact that the song was spliced together from various projects. He said that it was like putting together Frankenstein from pieces of recorded tape.

In the old days both Edgar Winter and his brother Johnny Winter would have been persecuted for their albinism. My sister did lights and roadie work for them in the 70s and she confirmed what we all know. They are both rock icons to this day.

Frankenstein is a novel featuring the named character composed of different body parts from different dead people come alive. Hence, the name of the song composed of diverse elements.

It is a Frankenstein of a song in that like the monsters body the song was made of so many different pieces and it does have some things that you could tie into the original Frankenstein movie like Edgar making the keyboard make growling noises and stomping noises similar to the monter growling and walking around and the synth making the electronics noises simulating Dr Frankenstein applying electricity to the monster to bring it alive. Some may disagree and say i'm reading too much into it and that is fine, i'm 68 years old and i've heard this song hundreds of times.

In essence, "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group doesn't tell the story of Frankenstein explicitly through lyrics but rather seems to draw you into the atmosphere and themes of the Frankenstein story through its music. I think it’s a creative and imaginative connection, allowing the listener to draw parallels between the song and the classic tale of the scientist and his monstrous creation. Other than that it’s just music and as we all know it’s open for interpretation I suppose it could be a giant bumble bee flying and hitting things on it’s way home. I have no idea but you two always give a great reaction and I always feel somehow better just seeing how peaceful and at the same time playful you too are. Edgar was the first person to strap a keyboard around him, because he wanted to be able to move around.
The name Frankenstein came from the drummer who said this song was something like Frankenstein's monster being created with all these different parts to it.
There's 2 ways that "Frankenstein" is appropriate for this piece. First, it was 'stitched together' out of several sessions when the band recorded themselves having 'jam sessions' and liked parts, so it's assembled from pieces from all over, and secondly, it's a bit of a lumbering monster.

Another fact about "The Old Grey Whistle Test" is that when Judas Priest performed live, the cameramen and producer's of the show thought they were too loud and covered their amplifiers with carpet to reduce the noise!

This was interesting. A few comments: Yes, Halloween is big here in the States. I don't happen to like it. When my kids were young, we moved to New Zealand. They attempted to carry on the Halloween tradition there and were met with a lot of rudeness. This isn't "Halloween" music per se. The keyboard around his neck was the first portable keyboard made. I took a class in Electronic music in the early 1970's. The idea of using it in popular music was in its infancy. There were a few groups, mostly in the jazz rock genre that were experimenting with it. As others stated, the Winter brothers were immensely talented. Johnny focused on blues guitar while Edgar was a talented multi instrumentalist and also a talented singer though it's not shown here.
Yeah, the name did kind of come from the fact that it was a piece together song first.. The drums was actually supposed to have been a double Drum solo with his brother. But his brother didn't want to do it. And the saxophone piece was something he was working on for another song but left out. But the main part the keyboard. He did that to showcase the keyboard because he invented it😅😅

Edgar does sing but not in this song. He and his older brother Johnnie were born in Beaumont Texas. They are Albinos born legally blind. Because they were sensitive to the light they stayed inside alot and learned to play multiple instruments. Their was a musician too.
