His 1972 Album "They Only Come Out At Night". Is Pure Brilliance, Every Song, And I Mean Every One Of The Songs On That Album Was A Number 1 Hit Or At Least A Top Five On The Radio At One Time Or Other..He Was Amazing.
I had the pleasure of sitting with Edgar on a cross country flight several years back. I didn’t recognize him and we had a spirited conversation about a variety of things; favorite authors, etc.. when the conversation came around to the purpose of our respective trips I explained that I had a ‘gig’ in KC and he told me he had a gig in Topeka. My gig was teaching a class….he explained his was “opening for ‘the Girls’l…I asked, “The Girls?” “Yes, Heart….” Then he introduced himself as “Edgar” and I immediately knew who my new ‘friend’ was. He then asked if I was free the following evening and invited me to the concert as his guest! What a wonderful man. His virtuosity during the opening was epic. Heart was great, of course, but his opening act outshone the ‘Girls’ that night.
WOW, would I have LOVED to be in your shoes (seat?)....when "Frankenstein" first came out, I was totally mesmerized by the "strange" drums, coming out of the one side of the stereo!! Bought a "standard" drum set as a teen (59 now!), but always longed to have the timbales....I now have my dream set up, a percussionist set, including 10 timbales.....
I absolutely love that version and watch it frequently on you tube. In my mind, Edgar is the "Rain Man" of Rock and Roll and I think he could play just about any instrument. His musical genius is off the scale!! Great video to review!!
Thank you for shedding a light on this classic track. The first time my friends and I saw it we kept waiting for Edgar to pull out a mouth harp or a banjo or a didgeridoo. Seriously, I wish I could have seen this live, what a performance.
Edgar Winter said he and his brother being albino, they couldn't go outside like other kids could and play sports. So instead, they stayed in and learned to play these instruments...
Edgar Winter is amazing talent. Great jazz saxophone player in addition to keys, guitar, and drums with an awesome voice and incredible range. Could split his talent over 5 people and they would all be great.
Really COOL analysis Fil, I have had the chance to see Edgar and Johnny Winter both. I saw Edgar in 2001 he was in the Ringo Starr Allstars Band. He had been playing sax the whole show, I didn't notice he was there. Then Ringo introduced him, I was shocked ,Edgar was one of the band that was a surprise artist. He played Frankenstein and played it on that same Moog Synthesizer that he played on your video ( In Atlanta GA). I could tell by all the scratches and dings it was the vintage Moog I saw him play on TV back then. Johnny I saw in Chattanooga TN, at a blues festival called The Bessie Smith Strut. Both of them are as you said, the are both so loaded with talent, wish I had some of it ,lol. I recommend the Ringo show to everyone , you never know who will be in the band EW wasn't even to be announced that night I saw him,Awesome man .Oh and one more thing this year Ringo turned 81 we don't have any guarantees that he will be on the road like that again, I believe he is this year though. Keep Rocking, brothers and sisters. Brother Gary
Darren Krivit kids today have no clue of how great it was to be alive. We grew up with smoking in Dr's offices, leaded gas, awesome TV, great music and survived just fine. I would gladly give up technology if I could go back to then.
I was born in 1966 . As a kid I hung around my really cool uncles and was introduced to a lot of badass music . Jethro Tull , Edgar Winter Group , Led Zeppelin , Steppenwolf , Mountain , Marshall Tucker Band , The James Gang featuring Joe Walsh . These were the bands that formed my taste in music .
Rick Derringer played guitar on and produced "Weird Al" Yankovic's debut album, and also played the guitar solo on "Eat It" a year later :) Ludicrously talented band!
A lot of the same guys that played with Derringer in the early 70s (and Rick himself.) I grew up near Rick in Union City. It's essentially the same band. He moved there when he was 8.

Wow, blast from my past. My mom used to blast this on her portable suitcase looking record player out on our front porch. "The only music I like that you kids play." We all loved Edgar and Johnny Winter's contributions to music. Loved this! TY Fil.🤘
Edgar and his late (and sadly missed) brother Johnny could hardly see. Their vision was very low. Maybe our gifts and challenges are balanced out according to some cosmic algorithm, or maybe it simply is whatever it is. Love the flashback, and Your brilliant commentary, Dear Fil. Rock! 🤘❤️
I did monitors one night for Edgar Winter and Leon Russell. I had everything dialled in and everybody was happy. Amazing material and Edgar became my favourite sax player of all time. I made a stereo mix of just his sax with a bit of reverb in my blows, sat back and enjoyed my private concert.
BRILLIANT!!!! I have always loved this song, but have never seen this video. Thanks Fil, for your input. I can see your excitement, also, when you are watching!!
I've been steering people to this video for years, telling anyone who'll listen that it's the most amazing live performance that I've ever seen. And Rick Derringer may look like Luke Skywalker here, but he ROCKS!
Awesome. Chuck Ruff (the drummer) was a personal friend and someone I had the pleasure of doing some recording with. He told me his secret was using the fat end of the sticks, exclusively. Great drummer. Good friend. R.I.P. my brother...👍
I saw both Winters brothers on two different occasions, both in small clubs up front and personal. A couple of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Super talents.
Dan Hartman (lead vocals and guitar intro riff on "Free Ride") playing the bass here. As a solo artist Hartman in the late 70s had a big soft rock hit with "I Can Dream About You" and "Instant Replay" with Vincent Cusano (Vinnie Vincent) playing guitar on the latter. Rick Derringer played the lead solo on Al Yankovic's "Eat It", had a huge hit with Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and sang lead vocals and played the guitar solo for The McCoys big mega hit back in the 1960s "Hang on Sloopey." There are some super talented individuals playing right here. Amazing! Thanks for your great commentary, Fil.
I'm sure glad I found this one. The players are playing each and every note in real time absolutely live with no background dubs or extraneous overlapping effects. Astoundingly fun to watch and listen to. All 4 of these guys are great in their own right. BTW, Dan Hartman wrote and sang the Edgar Winter song "Free Ride".
Was just on EW's website and the dedication to his wife Monique is so beautiful it made my heart soar! Every year, for the past 40 years, they renew their wedding vows and take a honeymoon. They have no children, and I think that exclusivity is part of why they are so close.
I just watched your analysis of *Carlos Santana's 1969 Woodstock performance* & commented on your use of a *"question and answer"* metaphor to describe it. Your metaphor made me think of your prior analysis of this performance, here, especially the long exchange between the drums -- a full blown *conversation!* Really, this entire performance is a free wheeling conversation between the instruments and between the instrumentalists. From what you said, it sounds like that's basically how they originated the music: jamming together and playing off each other in a conversation. I can't think of any performance that matches this degree of interaction. And the fun, interactive body language isn't an artificial stage device. It corresponds perfectly to the music.
I was 14 when this came out, the studio version I thought was around 3.5 minutes and was incredible even in that toned down version. The whole group are killing it, but Edger is unbelievable with that keyboard, then the ear melting sax solo, then the drums, then the synthesizer and his smashing the keyboard... I really really love this, as I did in '73 when it was originally released.
I had such respect for the Winters brothers even at a young age. They played with BB King and a lot of respected musicians, loved them. So glad you mentioned the keyboard and sax something my generation knew all excellent musicians.
This is the kind of music I was brought up on ....my favorite of theirs is "Free Ride" memories...love the music of that era !! Great music hold no boundries, none what so ever !!! Thanks Fil once again you did it !!
Amazing musicians!!! I can hear there many things (little nuances) that later on could be heard in many bands... and it was only 1973!!! We sometimes forget that music is a progression that started a long time ago. Great analysis video!!!
My first concert was this lineup 1974. Rick Derringer is from my neck of the woods Fort Recovery, Ohio. I've seen Rick & Edgar many times in concert. It's sad Chuck, Ronnie and Dan are gone now.
Rick Derringer rhythm guitar playing may seem simple but he is pushing the band.. giving it a pulse. The whole band moves in and out of the solos and movements with such grace-bravo!
Rick was such a professional. Heck, he had a top hit as a teen, with Hang on Sloopy in the McCoys. He'd been around the block a few times, and really knows his axe.
I grew up in Ohio, Rick was originally from Dayton, IIRC. "Local guitar hero makes good" story. Rock radio stations seemed to play "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" 24/7 there. He was the producer on They Only Come Out At Night, and contributed to backing tracks.

Your comments are spot on. This musical collaboration of energy is epic, wicked and powerfully entertaining, creative and so delightful to my eardrums. Frankenstein is Alive!!!
My father, who is in his 70s now, turned me onto all manner of great music when I was growing up. He plays music still. I inherited all his albums as I got older and I still have them to this day. Amongst them was several of the Winter brothers and The Edgar Winter Group. This has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years now that I'm in my 50s. I was told I was with them at one of the concerts when I was to young to remember. I am always happy to see others enjoy such a classics. Peace
I believe your spot on there's like a half a dozen guys walking the Earth with no skills whatsoever cuz the winter Brothers got them all which is pretty funny unless you're one of those six guys lol
Great analysis, Fil! Had this on 45 when it first came out. At my first my friends thought it was way too over the top. They eventually came around though. You should do an analysis of, The Sanford/Townsend Band's, Smoke From a Distant Fire from their live performance on the, Midnight Special. Such a solid performance from each and every member of that band.
This was a huge hit in the US. Oh dear, so much fun listening to your interpretation of music from my teen years! Rock on, indeed. The Winter brothers were so cool.
This is a very talented bunch of musicians, never really got into them until this video. They are excellent. A very talented bunch of musicians, Fil really knows the video, and enjoys the music, I enjoy the song and Fil provides lots of info about .them. I saw Johnny Winters a couple of times and he blew me away.
I was fortunate to have seen The Edgar Winter Group back in this era and they were amazing to see on stage. Edgar is a great musician and showman. I love both Edgar and Johnnys music.
I especially liked Rick Derringer's guitar through a Leslie sound on the 1970 Johnny Winter And album. Edgar played sax and keys on the 1969 Johnny Winter album "Second Winter" too.
@@WheatonBrad With the guitar sounds on "I Guess I'll Go Away " and especially "Nothing Left", it looked like he was going to go in a Hendrix influenced direction, but he didn't. That would have been interesting.
I saw them at Selland Arena in Fresno when Montrose was with them. Edgar's Brother Johnny came on stage and sat in for a few songs. It was AWESOME. When Frankenstein came on the lights went out and Edgars hands were glowing green playing keyboard around his neck. The Best concert I ever remember!!!! Thanks for this Fil

I went to see the Edgar Winter Group perform two years ago and wow, what an experience that was. The musicianship of the band, especially that of Edgar was simply incredible. The extended Frankenstein jam was certainly a highlight of the show. In an interview Edgar Winter stated that there is always quite a bit of improvising going on whenever he plays that particular tune live.
We cannot overlook the fact that Edgar is doing all this while wearing a cape
Yes! He inspired Rick Wake man of YES, and the rest is History!

In days of yore, Targaryen Lords like Edgar Winter would thrill the masses with recitals upon the Keytar and saxophone. Gone are the days....
...... milk of the poppy .....
How exactly did Daenarys know when “Winter was coming”. Did they somehow share the same hairdresser?
My father, who is in his 70s now, turned me onto all manner of great music when I was growing up. He plays music still. I inherited all his albums as I got older and I still have them to this day. Amongst them was several of the Winter brothers and The Edgar Winter Group. This has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years now that I'm in my 50s. I was told I was with them at one of the concerts when I was to young to remember. I am always happy to see others enjoy such a classics. Peace
Cool!
This explains why I can't draw. They stole my artistic ability and took it for themselves!
😂👍
I believe your spot on there's like a half a dozen guys walking the Earth with no skills whatsoever cuz the winter Brothers got them all which is pretty funny unless you're one of those six guys lol
it explains why i was never a good fighter, just a great lover. why couldn't i b both? damn u edgar & johnny!
You should have just done the whole damn video man.
Cool!
Cool!
After the performance:
“People of Earth, I would like to thank you for your hospitality. But it is now time for me to return to my home planet.”
😂
Old Man Doom 😆👍‼️
Come back soon Johnny Winter
I was fortunate to have seen The Edgar Winter Group back in this era and they were amazing to see on stage. Edgar is a great musician and showman. I love both Edgar and Johnnys music.
I especially liked Rick Derringer's guitar through a Leslie sound on the 1970 Johnny Winter And album. Edgar played sax and keys on the 1969 Johnny Winter album "Second Winter" too.
👍
One of the top five guitar albums of all time! Johnny Winter And. Wow.
@@WheatonBrad With the guitar sounds on "I Guess I'll Go Away " and especially "Nothing Left", it looked like he was going to go in a Hendrix influenced direction, but he didn't. That would have been interesting.
That solo in Still Alive and Well is the stuff!
@@johndef5075 The whole damned tune! What a riff. I think I blew my speakers up with that. More than once..... lol
Simply...Excellent, Unique work, Edgard W., Rick D. and the others guys.
Well done Phil, I was 12 yrs old when this played over the FM radio and we never tired from many rep's hearing it either.
Phil, stay humbled, your a Pro.
Thanks Dan!
Farout id never seen this before. Bloody amazing!
I saw Edgar do this live sometime in the 70s and it blew me away. What a show.
Rick Derringer was also a fantastic addition to this collection of talent. Just amazing!
Your information is always incredible, I am always learning when you are explaining the music, music I know for over 40 years.
Thank you
Aye! Such powerful musicianship. I remember when I first heard this in the '70's it blew my fragile eggshell mind. The band here is top notch and they deliver, thanks Fil for featuring this vid.
No problem!
Excellent musical transitions, performance and playing of musical instruments of the highest class, now very few people perform such music. Praise to all members of the group!
This remains my caffeine to this day. First time embarrassing my children was head banging to this.
All of that talent in one spot! It is overwhelmingly joyous! They are having a blast!

Fil, I guess for whatever reason I wasn’t into or even paying attention to him. Go figure. You are spot on as he was/is ‘one of a kind’! Man! My bad.

Cool!
