My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

Scott, Im so impressed with how well you research every component of your static van life. Every detail of even the smallest element of your build and upgrades are carefully decided. If everyone else would approach life that way there would be far less projects to do over Thankyou.

A few years back I overnighted at the Walmart in Aberdeen - along with a few dozen other people like me. Kind of nice, by the river, quieter than I expected.

My son has 3 properties in Aberdeen so I know Aberdeen a little. I also have a friend who lives in Ocean Shores so have driven through Aberdeen quite a few times.

Its a great time of year here in northern Germany, grey,rainy, cold and windy - ahh ok, thats not what you need? Ok, it was just an idea....I also thought maybe to get to the US and maybe visiting the RTR and see Bob "live" unfortunately this cannot happen this year, but maybe next year.....marbles klickering again in the mid of the night.....

Ive spent a fair amount of time in Aberdeen lately, I like the vibe there with the waterways, older buildings and neighborhoods. I always like to hang out underneath the bridge on the Wishkah River when ever Im there. There is great farmers market downtown and there is a amazing pies at Deidra's Deli in Hoquim, check it out

It’s kind of you to help her in any capacity that you can doubt there’s always a day when any one of us needs an extra person whether we live in a van or we’re starting a Homestead or trying to fix our van sometimes we need somebody there moral support they’re also an extra hand sometimes it’s just doing the work you don’t have to learn how it just comes to you as you do it I’m not talking about technical things I’m talking about chopping firewood taking it into her house or her porch helping her with the heavy stuff I really think a lot of you understand this and it’s deeply appreciated and we pay it forward for sure
I've never lived in Aberdeen, but have been through it many times. It seems like a very charming lil town.
I'd love to stop and explore it some day. But since I don't drive, that leaves me at other people's mercy so I've never had the opportunity, so far.

I actually loved this video it seemed like you were so upbeat and you're in my neck of the woods I love how you explain everything a lot of the TH-camrs really kind of cut all of that out and it's great because I am interested in doing something like this I don't have a van but I have a truck and it would really be nice to have more information about where you get stuff and like I said a lot of people just kind of cut that out

Solar is still mostly 'greek' to me but slowly making more senes. I love Pita chips. They have cinnamon sugar Pita chips but the only place I could ever find them was Whole Foods - of course none of those stores near me.

Great video again, off brand 100 watt solar panels are around $89 on amazon and they will deliver to a ups store of your choice, I think UPS may charge $5-10 for a pkg without a box rental. Too bad you couldn't get someone to weld up something to hold the 150 watt panel above the 2-100 watt panels where it can be unlocked and swung out to be like a cover over your door giving you 450 watts (1-150 watt, and 3-100 watts -- 2 on front and 1 on rear with the 150 on a tier above the 2-100w panels in a locked position for driving). I know I'm weird because I think of stuff that may not work. Good luck on your travels and hope your motor and transmission last a good while longer. Stay warm if you can.
For what it's worth as a recommendation, I have the GIANDEL Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter 400Watt I got off Amazon and has never let me down, I use it to charge my EcoFlow while driving, it costs more than the cheap ones (£54) but puts out a good clean pure sign wave so protects my power station and laptop.

A minivan is perfect for me. I spend most of my day outside. I want to be outside as much as possible. A bigger van would be a waste for me

I needed a pure sine wave to run electronics. Maybe it’s not necessary for charging but I like to be careful. I have no landline, so when our power goes out, I need to keep my wi-fi going since we are remote with no cell coverage.

The mention of "the dark season" has me curious how feasible running a generator is to charge up a battery. I know they're loud and guzzle gas, but...when you need power ya need power. But, this small a van may not have room for a powerful enough generator i suppose.
Generators work great. But I don't ever want one.

Yes, but I don’t like their power inverters. Plus I don’t really need one either
Hiya Scott, it's Sam, we met in Sequim a little while back when you were filming some of the video for the Panels and Solar power station.
If your going to be keeping your driving down to 2-5 miles, just forget using and inverter with a charger, you'll get almost no real benefit from that.
A dc to dc charger from victron or Renogy is going to give you dramatically more power for those miles of driving on the daily, and when you drive longer trips it can fully charge your battery.
As to the health of your power train, a small dc to dc charger is also by far the safest way to get power to your house battery because it limits exactly how much can be taken from the alternator to prevent problems. Fused at both ends, and voltage an current regulated it's even safer than an inverter and a battery charger.
It's completely doable. In a similar vein, you could do something where you use a fused, regulated, macbook 65 watt cigarette lighter plug to feed 12vs to your existing solar charge controller while you are driving to have it change your house batteries. That is a bit more black arts stuff because you would need to add a cutoff switch, and a PD circuit to take that power from the dash. But it can be done.

I get my. 2000 inverter at a track stop. It was about 200 dollars. I use it for my 110 magic chef Frazer refrigerator. You my not need one like that. But they have smaller one's too.

I am doing something different this winter also instead of spending winter in Arizona this winter I staying in Kentucky just needing a change in my life kinda got stuck in a rut doing the same thing and I like winter long as I prepare myself for it than i am pretty comfortable and winter has it's own beauty.

I used to use dry sacs when i went kayaking all the time. (Maybe from walmart.) Great idea for your food. Probably keeps critters out also.
The hope with using dry bags for my food was because my van gets very dusty on occasion because I never close my vents.

...not boring at all. Personally I am given to appreciate your reasoning out talks, of how you make your decisions at a given moment. Your attitude and presence of being reminds me of the friends of my family of my youth. These dear Ones for the main have passed on as they were then having lived at that time to near retirement age.... When here now in the quiet of the night it seems as though those Ones in a manner of speaking, became lost to me, are now in some respects being restored, well, their memory and essence rekindled to me through your videos here. Also to share a personal idea, although this one you've probably considered, ...maybe think of coming up with a Book on food preparation for in particular, Camping and/ or cooking for One. Your meals look so tasty and so much so I find myself thinking, oh that looks so good and seems as if ..smell-a-vision.. has been activated. Must be there is enough ASMR with foods (coffee also) that ..taste.. comes into being.

Finding a parking spot for the night has never been a problem for me. I’m mostly in towns and cities so parking is easy.
Hmmmm. Charging one battery (solar charged) from another is silly but burning gas to accomplish the same is not. I realize you would be driving anyway but 5 miles probably not charge enough.

I don't know if i am a "member" or not? Does that mean "subscribed as opposed to not subscribed"? or does that mean patreons? I am subscribed but am not a patreon because i am retired so can't afford monthly fees. The video played ok, so i guess it was ok for me to watch it.
In this case, a Member refers to someone paying a monthly fee above being subscribed. Every so often, I will release a “Members Only” video for everyone.
