Honestly you learn fast. I’m 15 and I just started flying on vatsim and even on my first few flights i’ve learned a lot. I’ve mostly done traffic patterns and vfr to other airports but I don’t know how to do Ifr and it seems like you need to know a lot. I still have a lot to learn though, like today I didn’t check the atis before arriving at an airport and the atc was giving me an attitude and it honestly kinda pisses me off. But that’s the only ignoranus controller that i’ve come across, most are very accommodating and respectful of my begginerness. Most people understand that it’s just a game so don’t feel scared to go into it not knowing much
Holy crap, I’ve wanted to learn how to participate in realistic ATC communications for so long, and you finally explained it in a way that makes sense! Thanks man, great video! You should make more ATC tutorials, like on how to properly take off and land with VFR, or how to use the aircraft computers to plan a route, or something.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm always thinking about new tutorials I could make. There's pretty much existing tutorials for everything, but it seems we often need multiple of the same kind to learn things completely (various ways of presenting the same information). I will surely give some of these a try :)
Definitely agree with this. I've been flying on XPlane on and off for a year or so, had vatsim the whole time but never had the balls to actually communicate with ATC. Bought msfs2020 and really want to learn the correct way of flying VFR and also communicating with ATC, this is probably the best video I've seen explaining the communication with ATC. Please keep videos like this coming, I've subscribed. Good job man, excellent video.
This is an amazing video. Excellent production and clarity. I’m quite intimidated to use Vatsim, so it is nice to be led gently into the system. Thank you!
Thanks Noah! I recommend starting with VFR flight at a regional airport that is being controlled by a center controller. That way you're still provided ATC coverage but nothing complex. Flying through class B can be pretty tough business. Class C is easy enough, just might get limited vectoring or altitude restrictions to keep you out of traffic flows. I can't recommend flying with a VFR sectional enough. Just so you know where the airspace is and how to avoid it/what levels to fly at. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
AtmosFlight Thank you so much! I do have a question, however. So for example, if you need to contact ground but only center is online, would you address center as “Center” and then within your message say where you are at specifically, or address them as “AirportName Ground”?
This was very informative. I flew into class B airspace yesterday in a A320 and made a mockery of myself because it was my first time on the network and 0 zero experience with ATC. My fault because I should be practicing the smaller flights like this. Also would love IFR tutorial.
Jeremaine Larmond lmao! Same but like 10 years ago. Advice: start small. Like with a small prop plane. Do VFR. My last video was IFR focused. Check it out. Not a complete tutorial, but at the least a preview.

And flying in Europe especially Germany you really need to have precise VFR charts, or a good knowledge of the area on and around controlled airports, because for the most part you’re following rather strict routes in and out of the control zone (mostly not in runway heading nor in a straight line). This really ups the task level. Squawk 7000, never say “with you”, ask for “flight information service”, only turn right when approved... and up you go ;)
@@atmosflight5534 hey man ! Love the game! Still afraid to jump on Vatsim...but I configured ILS landing on the CJ4 super easy to practice...take off and land at the same airport. Cool video, very well explained, I understood a lot of it. My English is unfortunately pretty crap and I want to practice the takeoff and landing of a Cessna with live radio like a bit. Just one more thing where or what in the hell is 3BO. I have not found that. :-) Greetings from Austria - Tirol
Thanks for the video, I haven’t played FS for years but have been thinking of getting back into it. Actually I might be more inclined to enter the atc side of things. I have been a pilot since the 70’s and am a current CFII. I am working on my second RV and document my progress on my YT channel. I’ll keep looking at the VATSIM site, but wonder what hardware I’ll need for the atc side of things? Jim
Don’t think you actually need that much. Just a working computer and a microphone. You have tools you download from their website. Would def go check it out under “for ATC”
I'm so confused with VFR. This video doesn't seem to cover the one thing I am not understanding. Filing the flight plan, particularly the routing. Considering unlike IFR, VFR does not involve fixes in routing. Just "landmarks"? So in routing, if there are no significant landmarks. What do I put in?
Your squawk readback was incorrect -- he gave you 7310 and you said 7130. He said your readback was correct, though :D He also gave you an altitude of 2,500 when you requested 3,500, so I'm guessing that was unintended on his part.
Ogg Vorbis maybe. I’m not a fan of sharing profiles simply because it depends on how high you sit, how far away, etc. I would have no problem sharing the video I used to set it up however.
@@atmosflight5534 Yea just watched your landing video where you answered that, great job with that one too and thanks for answering here. I have gamepass so wish they would at least offer the extra planes for an additional fee. I flew that one a good bit in x-plane and would like to be able to swap between it and the G1000 model. Planning on doing some ground school soon so appreciating these videos keep up the good work.
I'm away from my desktop but I believe Vpilot should recognize all inputs. I assigned my PTT to one of the buttons on my thrustmaster T16000m... I have a hard time believing it wont recognize the alpha. Would keep checking up, maybe google honeycomb alpha vpilot. Should detect your input.
Hey, very nice Video! Searched for this tutorial a lot! Got a little question: what‘s your setting in the menu with Live traffic, live weather and live players? Does everything need to turn off while using VatSim? Greets!
Are you using VR set? The movement you have is so much better than mine with mouse and keyboard. I use yoke but still moving view is very hard and rough.
Are you using track ir for your soft Camera movements? Thanks for a great video. Looking forward to trying out Vatsim. Have enjoyed Pilotedge but I am ready to explore the world now
When you're just flying around vfr without flight following how do you know when you're supposed to be in contact with a controller and what frequency they're on? Is a flight plan mandatory on vatsim?
Great video. Here is my question: What advice do you have for a complete real life ATC newbie? In other words, someone who can fly well, knows very basic rules, and never has talked with ATC?
If you know enough about the rules and terminology... Just go for it. It's fun and they're helpful.. Just stay out of the busiest airspace at first. Find an ATC person that's online but at a quieter area.. KC Center for example is generally a good place to get ATC coverage as a beginner GA pilot.
@@paulg9042 Boston Center would cover you (once you got off the ground, since 3B0 is in uncontrolled airspace (I believe)). That's not bad since it's a relatively quiet area.
Nice explanation. Trying to get a VFR flight going on vatsim. How about filing the flight plan? Do you have a video on that? I found some videos but mostly on IFR airliner operations.
Same way you do for opening an IFR plan on VATSIM, only you fill in the necessary stuff. Both IRL and in the sim, I never, and I mean never, file a flight plan. If you’re doing a short-ish route and flying during the day there’s no real point in it. At least IMO. Some argue the safety factor. I just don’t bother. I always get flight following instead.
When u click the disconnect button while flying, what happens? This is one of my biggest questions. Does it just pull u out of the network, or do u have to restart your game? Also, can u leave in the middle of the VATSIM session? I need answers please.
Awesome video, very informational. Especially for someone like myself who has nothing but Unicom experience (flying with friends and working at a fbo) one question I do have is is there only one Unicom freq on Vatsim or does it follow your local Unicom freq?
It’s one global Unicom frequency but it only works within a certain distance. So you won’t hear someone across the globe but you will hear people at nearby airports.
Nope. You don't even need flight following as a VFR pilot.. Just be aware that in Delta, Charlie, and Bravo airspaces, talking to ATC is mandatory and you must establish contact before entering those airspaces. For Bravo, you need explicit clearance to enter.
Flight following is where ATC is tracking you, but not directing you where to go, except when necessary. You are flying by visual flight rules and navigating on your own.. but ATC will assist you with traffic call outs. A typical landing will feature you contacting ATC with your location and intentions (10 miles out inbound full stop landing) and they’ll clear you into their air space if relevant. Then they’ll clear you to land.
Hi! I registered a Foreflight account, but it needs a subscription to use. As I already are a customer to Navigraph (only IFR) I am not interested to pay more than my subscription there. Do you have any suggestions for freeware to use to plan VFR flights?
i was looking at trying this because default atc is very underwhelming. i have a couple of questions. 1) are they forgiving to absolute novices? 2) how does active pause affect game. if i needed to pause for 20 mins, what would happen? anyway, thanks for vid, it was awesome.
1) they are but you have to do your part. Study airspace, familiarize yourself with the airport, sectional map, know how to control your plane etc. I still make mistakes. It’s fine. They do too. They usually won’t trip. 2) discouraged. If you need to leave for 20 min recommenced you disconnect. You could probably active pause and disconnect and then resume when you come back.
Joe Holloway you can configure the flight PSN however you’d like. But you’re right - I did fail to show how to disable the ATC. You can turn off the native ATC voice in the settings. It should be under assists or realism.
Great video. I just did a similar first VATSIM flight yesterday, when I went from KDEN (class B) to KCOS (class C). Doing this during a low traffic time was much easier to follow and I know I messed up a lot, but they were patient with me. Only question I have is, when arriving at KCOS there were no active tower or ground there, but there was still center online from when I started at KDEN. I just stayed on Unicom after leaving class B, but should I have contacted Center for KCOS?
You can go to Unicom if you choose not to talk to ATC in class E airspace. However, KCOS is class Charlie, so you would have needed to talk to center to enter it, including landing and taxi. Center must have missed it, decided to leave you to your own devices, or thought little of it with few traffic. Class B, C, and D airspace require 2 way radio. Class E airspace does not. That means for VFR flight you do need to be with ATC at all times, but for class E (basically anything outside of class B, C, and D) you can choose whether to be with ATC or not.

Cool video, very well explained, I understood a lot of it. My English is unfortunately pretty crap and I want to practice the takeoff and landing of a Cessna with live radio like a bit. That I can learn a little better English. I think this is a lot of fun and the guy from Boston Center there I had to laugh with what a joy he said hello. That is fun. Thanks for your tips. That with the charts I did not know that you can Downloaden this and I hope it is nobody angry about me when i talk bushit at the radio when i try it. Just one more thing where or what in the hell is 3BO. I have not found that. :-)
Greetings from Austria - Tirol
3BO was somewhere in Massachusetts I think
Noob here. Did ground say squawk 7310 but you read back 7130?
Great job! You covered all the bases!!
Great tutorial. I may watch this one more time :D
instrumentenfreak highly recommended! Subscribe for more - working on a video on VFR navigation as we speak.
Great tutorial man ! Hopefully someday I can learn lol
Anybody can.
Would have liked to hear the traffic callouts
Thanks for this. Your MSFS graphics look awesome, what‘s your PC configuration? All on Ultra?
Most of them are on ultra.
Amazing Video! Just one question. When they said head '360' Were about in the cockpit do you look to get that heading? Anyway thanks!
Do you have to turn off multiplayer and live traffic etc to use this? I can’t figure out the set up in general.
I turn them both off. Connecting Vpilot will take care of the rest. I do use live weather.
The best charts by far are from navigraph
What kind of Track IR do you use? It's very smooth :)
That was a bit hurried... and lots of VFR elements still to be covered. But in the end I understood this was more of a brief introduction video...
Yeah, wanted to demonstrate this in a brief and concise manner. I may make a follow on XC tutorial that would be far more in depth.
Thanks for the vid.
I was wondering what you use for adjusting your in-game view. It looks very smooth and always having a good view.
Sorry for the late response. I use TrackIR. It's not the cheapest solution but it's great. There's open-source stuff out there.. Open track No IR etc.
Your squawk readback was incorrect -- he gave you 7310 and you said 7130. He said your readback was correct, though :D He also gave you an altitude of 2,500 when you requested 3,500, so I'm guessing that was unintended on his part.
How do you make looking around in the cockpit look so fluent and natural?
Great tutorial, very helpful. Would it be possible for you to make your TrackIR profile available for download? Looks great!
Ogg Vorbis maybe. I’m not a fan of sharing profiles simply because it depends on how high you sit, how far away, etc. I would have no problem sharing the video I used to set it up however.
Is the C172 you have there the one included in the deluxe edition? Great job with video was very to the point.
Shane Rose yes. Premium deluxe version of the 172S
Planning on doing some ground school soon so appreciating these videos keep up the good work.
my boy sheed on boston coms!
How about a pdf for vpilot install and setup, I would appreciate it
AJ. Maze not pdf, but: vpilot.metacraft.com/Documentation
Thanks! Very informative
Question - how did you set up push to talk to work with your microphone? I'm using honeycomb alpha but not seeing any settings to assign a button.
Bro how are you doing the head movement? VR or TrackIR? It’s sick!
Hey, very nice Video!
Searched for this tutorial a lot!
Got a little question:
what‘s your setting in the menu with Live traffic, live weather and live players? Does everything need to turn off while using VatSim?
Greets!
VATSIM theoretically should turn this off. I turn off AI traffic and multiplayer just to be safe. I set weather to live.
@@atmosflight5534 if you turn multiplayer off, are you still seeing traffic in vatsim?
Kit Nam Lai yes. VATSIM is separate. It pulls in models based on information passed via sim connect.
Are you using VR set? The movement you have is so much better than mine with mouse and keyboard. I use yoke but still moving view is very hard and rough.
Nope. I use TrackIR. Highly recommend.
@@atmosflight5534 thanks for the quick reply!! I’ll look into it right away!! Made my day :)
Are you using track ir for your soft Camera movements?
Thanks for a great video. Looking forward to trying out Vatsim. Have enjoyed Pilotedge but I am ready to explore the world now
Yes I am.
Sky vector is good for VFR sectional
@@atmosflight5534 Thanks. What if for example Boston Center is active and I'm flying from a completely different airport (outside of Bravo)?
@@paulg9042 Boston Center would cover you (once you got off the ground, since 3B0 is in uncontrolled airspace (I believe)). That's not bad since it's a relatively quiet area.
lol you said 7-1-3-0 twice but put 7-3-1-0 correctly into the transponder
nice vid it helped me a lot
Hope to get back into it in August. I've been away from home since Feb :(
Nice explanation.
If you press disconnect you just disappear from the network. That’s all. You’ll keep flying.
@@atmosflight5534 Dang. that was fast. So all the planes and atc disconnect as well right?
I subbed and liked as well :D
Thanks for the clarification!
@@j-man4231 they’ll disappear from your application. So yes.
Skyvector is a good one
Awesome video, very informational. Especially for someone like myself who has nothing but Unicom experience (flying with friends and working at a fbo) one question I do have is is there only one Unicom freq on Vatsim or does it follow your local Unicom freq?
It’s one global Unicom frequency but it only works within a certain distance. So you won’t hear someone across the globe but you will hear people at nearby airports.
One frequency with a range of 15 miles
Was N358TW intentional? Cause that’s the aircraft I got my first couple lessons in
Yes it was.
Hi! Great video, very helpful. Do you need to file a flight plan?
Nope. You don't even need flight following as a VFR pilot.. Just be aware that in Delta, Charlie, and Bravo airspaces, talking to ATC is mandatory and you must establish contact before entering those airspaces. For Bravo, you need explicit clearance to enter.
Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching! :)
are you using VR? i've never seen the head movements look so natural
Nope. I use TrackIR.
What comp setup are you using?
Anyone know if the Tritonsim G-450 portover is online somewhere? I only have the 550 and 650.
What are you using to look around? TrackIR?
Using TrackIR yes.
Thanks for this, a really informative video! Out of interest, are you using head tracker software? If so, what are you using?
I’m using TrackIR
Two questions, one bigger than the other: One, what does flight following mean exactly, and two, what does a typical landing look like, ATC-wise?
There are a few map sources for free VFR stuff. Skyvector is one I believe.
i was looking at trying this because default atc is very underwhelming. i have a couple of questions.
AtmosFlight cheers, much appreciated!
8:58, how do you get that moving animation?
Good video, subscribed.
Was hoping to see how you configure MSFS with your flightplan and disable the builtin ATC, but you didn't cover this..
Joe Holloway you can configure the flight PSN however you’d like. But you’re right - I did fail to show how to disable the ATC. You can turn off the native ATC voice in the settings. It should be under assists or realism.
Do you have to change the multiplayer setting on msfs to join a vatsim server?
@@atmosflight5534 thanks for that.
Hey bro...good video. Just started on FS20. What aircraft is this? Is it an add on? I can only see the 152 with the sixpack and the 172 with the G1000. Thanks brother.
172s I fly in the sim comes with the premium deluxe or whatever it was.
14:32 good time to look right.
Wait.. so this is across multiple games, so people can be in X-Plane and you will still see eachother?
sked yes. Cross platform. It’s third party.
