- "The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between June 1900 and April 1901. The piece established his fame as a concerto composer and is one of his most enduringly popular pieces."
"After the disastrous 1897 premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninoff suffered a psychological breakdown and depression that prevented composition for three years. In that period he was cash-strapped and turned to heavy drinking."
"The Second Piano Concerto is a record of an artist's survival. Deep in the stasis of depression, Rachmaninoff could see no way out. This concerto, dedicated to his therapist, was his companion as he took his first steps into the light."
"Piano Concerto Number 2 was written in three-movement concerto form. This part begins about 20 seconds into the 2nd Movement...
1st Movement - Moderato (C minor)
2nd Movement - Adagio sostenuto - Più animato - Tempo I (C minor → E major)
3rd Movement - Allegro scherzando (E major → C minor → C major)

Glad this is what came up when I searched for it, this is exactly what I was looking for. This section is so beautiful it always makes me cry...
It moved Lady Diana deeply, too. It was her favorite piece, which she played on the piano herself.
On that, watch the very end of this video, from 42:15 to the end...

@@craigfinnegan8534 That's really interesting, I'm glad to know a little more about her. Clearly she had great taste in music!
The inspiration behind "All By Myself"
Yes! I knew it was not just my imagination!!
I can affirm this is the best movement in all music history, so depressing, hopeful and happy at the same time
There are two sets of orchestras in great compositions - the physical orchestra, and the hidden orchestra of emotions.
En mi opinión me gusta más el concierto no 3 pero este concierto es brutal!!
I prefer it to be generous and beautiful
I imagine that this is what falling in love sounds like ❤️
If you want to hear what falling *out* of love sounds like, listen to Rap.
@@craigfinnegan8534classically trained pianist here, (my brother loves rap) I try to listen to his reasonings but can’t understand why he likes it so much. I’m the more talented musically out of us two, and I think that has something to do with it. Others simply are just more musically intelligent. My brother loves great music as well, but strays from classical. He was a decent musician himself.
@@print-helloworld-8977 have you ever considered that maybe it isn't related to musical "intelligence" and people just like different types of music the same way they like different things in everything? "I’m the more talented musically out of us two, and I think that has something to do with it. Others simply are just more musically intelligent." is such a disgusting thing to say, the things YOU prefer aren't superior to the things others prefer just cause you can play better an instrument (and just in case, no, I don't like rap)
You’re just a fool so you wouldn’t get it. Just a fool trying to start an online feud. I’m not falling for it, and that’s not what I said. Everyone is entitled, though some others have different talents than others. It’s called life. Grow up.

as someone studying to become a therapist, I would have sobbed if I was able to help a client like this. It captures the feeling of finding light in therapy beautifully 🥹♥️
I cry like Niagara Falls every time I hear this part of the concert. Incredible performance, makes your heart beat faster and experience something otherworldly
Very nicely said.
The whole piece is the best part 😭😭
the part starting at 2:00 is so sad and beautiful. i love how rach chose pentuplets(?) in the left hand. it breaks up the rigidity in the right hand. and pentagons are arguably more aesthetically pleasing than squares 😅 and then the long drawn out strings contrasted with the pointlike piano chords is sublime 🥹
You're leaving me in the musical dust here, Eric. I just know mastery when it masters my heart. But then again, love is in the details.
quintuplets!
Literally “I’ll be here for you” ahh type beat
I prefer "you've been here for me, thank you so"
Majestic ahh beat
@@Ahtonllmore like "i will always be here for you."
the buildup in the strings alluding to 2:00 is just SO moving oh my god
In an ocean of stupidity and horror, how did the TH-cam algorithm know to send me here?
My soul has experienced healing tonight. Thank you, Craig.
Having it's source in God, like all beauty, beautiful music gets it's beauty from divine harmony, as does spiritual healing. And so it was that same mysterious harmony that brought you together with that music.
Craig, I don't know how, but you reached out to me today and now I am sitting in my office with tears in my eyes 🥲
Today is the birthday of the Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna and I went on TH-cam to hear this piece because
it reminded me of her... And what did I see as soon as I pressed the "search" button? I am just speechless ❤🥲
Every single time I looked at her, every second spent next to her, hearing her, being with her, felt like this song. I miss her so much, my beautiful princess. Thanks for the memories Ketzalli. I cherish them dearly.
Just lovely. I also highly recommend Elgar's op.84 II: adagio for anybody who likes this, the last few minutes especially are very romantic.
I'll listen to that piece. In the meantime you can check out Elgar's Sospiri, if you haven't already. It's another exquisite, little-known (in the modern era) masterpiece of beauty.
Romance in D Minor is another really lovely piece by Elgar in the same vein as these, I’d highly recommend Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s recording of it.
I’m just recently learning how to play piano and understand music but this right here is a dream go listen to
Such a nice surprise to see a photo of the Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna here…
Back when I uploaded this I had just finished reading Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie and The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport.
Tears start to flow when I hear this part...because it reminds me of you my love😢
😂😂
thank you so much for uploading this 😃
I discovered this piece fairly recently, having previously only known it as the popular 70s hit "All By Myself." I found out it was originally a classical composition when I saw a great documentary about Lady Diana, who played this on her piano as the loneliest royal.
@@craigfinnegan8534 The whole of this Rachmaninoff concerto is beautiful, you should check it out!
This goes so well with Tatiana ❤️
When I saw that photo of her looking like she was playing a piano (she wasn't) it seemed perfect for this upload. She was Russian like Rachmaninoff and was the most regal of the 4 Romanov sisters, which matches the proud dignity of the music.

I close my eyes, my mind's eye sees me sweeping through clouds as this passionate Rachmaninoff falls from beyond.

Great music seeks to capture love, like we human beings. But like us, only the truly inspired succeeds so well.

(Some performances have this part begin as late as 11:55).
This part is always about 1/3rd of the way through the full "Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto Number 2" which is broken into 3 Movements and totals just over 30 minutes. So it's about 20 seconds into the 2nd Movement.
Which performance is this?
Rachmaninoff- Piano Concerto 2 (Adagio)
Krystian Zimerman with Ozawa and the Boston Symphony!
What part of the song is this I can’t find it on the full song
It begins about 20 seconds into Adagio, the 2nd of the Concerto's 3 movements.
So about 1/3rd into the original composition (ie the full song).

*Doesn't play the end of the third movement*
true but this part is still really good
not to mention that bit near the middle of the first movement, got me wanting to get up and dance fr
I just realized this, but the build up to the chorus in the song “All by Myself” by Eric Carmen sounds EXACTLY like 1:31-2:02 of this song. It’s even played on the piano too.

I hate rachmaninoff because he didn't make this part longer.
this is climax part of the piece. climaxes in pieces arent supposed to last long, its just supposed to be "the best part" of it. so making it last longer would make it feel underwhelming
i get that but the part near the end just feels like it dies off too quickly. idk i haven't written anything in years so maybe it's better if it doesn't drag but i just love the chords lol
@@csconnor5160I totally agree but doesn’t it also add a little bit of sadness? For me at least, the feeling this evokes is one of triumph after defeat. Peace after turmoil. Some kind of great realization that brings about true change. Passion, joy, hope. Sadness, hurt, even a little bit of rage. To me at least, this climax perfectly demonstrates the complexity of human emotion, the richness of a human life. It’s just so beautiful. But like emotion and life and existence, it can be short. The end can be sudden. And there’s nothing we can do but accept that, and appreciate what we have all the more because of that.

This is probably one of the only parts I don't like about the Zimerman interpretation. The right hand chords are too forceful and shrill for my taste. It should send you into a euphoric trance, a daze which slowly wanes away...
In general I know what you mean. I don't feel that about this piece, but there are many other compositions and songs where my reaction is dramatically different depending on how softly or strongly they're played.
