    Rodney's mind is only limited by his body. Anything this man had decided to do he would have been extremely successful. Skateboarding is extremely lucky to have been chosen by Rodney.

      Nice, Im comming back after about a 25 year break, just turned 45. Biggest difference for me (besides obviously not being as athletic and still trying to get my balance and pop back) is now I'm afraid of getting hurt cause I can't afford to miss work, that and my recovery is much slower, already rolled an ankle just a couple weeks after buying my first deck in over 20 years.

    • @Manalabs1

      I recently started after only like an 8 years break. Take it slow. In your mind you can/want to do all the things you could do back in the day but your body says otherwise lol. I fell trying to ollie manual a box and road rashed the side of my face :(.

      I said it in another video: there was a time when saying that Rodney Mullen was your favorite skater was the equivalent of a mall grab. People looked at you like you were a poser. It wasn´t "cool"; what it was cool is to name some other skaters, pretty good of course, but not Rodney. I never understood that. Now he is getting the recognition, but he deserves way more. He is an awesome guy, inspiring, and living history.

    I wouldn’t really call most of this rare. A lot of this footage was used in his videos from the late 90’s, early 2000’s. I specifically remember seeing quite a bit of it in Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song rounds 1 and 2.... Incredible footage though, as always when dealing with Rodney Mullen.

    That standing casper drop to primo was crazy, and he made it look like it was nothing :) True legend, there will not be anyone to compare against him, ever. And here was the only swear word i have ever heard from him, and it only made him look more humble and human. Good example that words also have much more power if you just use them wisely. Thanks!

      Yeah not many clips of him grinding rails he mainly stuck to curbs, ledges, benches and picnic tables. I'm guessing the rail clips are from one of the plan b videos were Mullen was basically forced to start street skating like everyone else at the time. and if i recall the director was the one that encouraged him to take his crazy freestyle tricks to the streets... We weren’t retards c’mon. Every skateboarder in the early to mid 90’s knew very well what he was doing and he was the idol of a whole generation of young street skaters. We would spend hours upon hours in a parking lot trying to emulate him and realizing just how insanely hard everything he did with ease. Hell even skateparks were deserted for a while, we all wanted to be like Mullen and transform a simple flat ground spot and a curb into an outlet for creativity.

      I think it was more referring to being non tony hawk pro skater video clips... like the videos you unlock for each pro skater which is were many young skaters were first introduced to the legend of Rodney Mullen, and are the video parts that people are most fimilar with... I havent seen them in years so could be wrong but I think most of these clips are from his actual video parts, not from the video games vid clips... and unless you were buying skateboard videos back in the day, then theres a lot of his early stuff that you'd have missed... keeping in mind youtube didnt launch till 2005... which by that time we already had pro skaters 1-4, the 2 underground games, and american wasteland game... I think most big Mullen fans have seen the majority of his work over the years but for the average/casual skater fan that just knows him as the freestyle skater from the video games they may have never seen a lot of this stuff... and I feel like some of these clips have been fixed to be slightly higher quality then what is available to watch on youtube (many early mullen clips/parts that are on youtube are shitty quality having been filmed on vhs cameras combined with having been uploaded in the early days of youtube... the coolest/rarest part to me was the ending where he seems to be explaining either to a skating peer or some young fans the art of rail slides/flips.

      Oh No
      it used to be a trend in the 90's. Small wheels, big pants

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah if i remember correctly in like the early-mid 90s when i started skating wheel sizes were only like 40-50mm max! I feel like there may have even been 30-35mm wheels then but there definitely wasn't any 50+mm wheels or if there was they were rarely seen besides of course on long board. I do recall hearing or seeing something about how Rodney preferred ultra small wheels compared to the industry standards and would wear his wheels down so much he might as well been skating on straight bearings haha... maybe 30-35mm was his preferred wheel size but no one made them so he would wear them down himself to the size he wanted or some shit like that... Im positive ive heard a story along those lines cause even compared to other classic skate parts from the same era, Rodneys wheels still look small in comparison but I know for the tech skating Rodney does/did, having a lower center of gravity is preferred, which is part of why he skated small wheels and later invented tensor low trucks...

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tyson that was a long ass comment pretty much full of bullshit.

    • @Mewted
      @Mewted 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyson was spot on, except there were a (very) few big wheels out there..probably maxing out around 80mm, but almost no one used them. By the mid/late 90s larger wheels started making a comeback.

    • @Kangsteri
      @Kangsteri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well back in my days, sometime after the ceramic wheels turned in to urethane and using nose of the board for switchstance was invented..:D This was the era when boarding went from slalom, street surfing, free riding and pipe, to street spots, ledges, rails, kickers and ramps. This also means that the speeds in those spots were much slower and you could choose better flat grounds to do the new advanced technical tricks. And for what i know Rodney has always been trying to invent new ways to make better / lighter and more balanced boards, trucks, shapes and materials.
      So at mid 90's the board and trucks got much thinner, had their first real nose and it was common to take the new wheel to some machine worker who had lathe, to take some extra weight of the wheels (so they were made to be thinner and smaller). The wheels got larger again when the drops and ledges started to grow and there was more need for speed in rough spots.
      Skateboarding will always be mainly measured by real raw skills but there really is a aspect on the importance of your gear vs your style and preferences. It has often been common to make line to your grip tape to see nose or tail and where to put your legs to get the board flip better, some people use lead weights to balance their board, Daewon doesn't use bushings, some like thin, wide or slick boards, some like thin shoes and others like them to be stiff, some people think its gay to use protective pads, and it effects on your style if you think that your swag looks cool, etc.
      Seems like the difference in these things is more in our heads than in physical reality. Things that bother us often amplify if we are required to show something to others. The magic in your true feeling sounds like hippie, but its real when it comes to extreme performance. That's also what separates competitive skateboarding from natural skateboarding. It's also very different to film skateboarding alone in peace and safe place, or when there is kids, beautiful women, and commentators screaming and looking at you.
