- What do skateboarding and innovation have in common? More than you might think. A successful entrepreneur and innovator, Rodney Mullen is widely considered the most influential street skater in history, inventing most of the tricks used today. By the time he was 23, Mullen had already set new milestones for skateboarding winning 35 out of 36 freestyle competitions. He studied engineering at the University of Florida before co-founding World Industries, the largest skate company of the 90's, which was acquired for more than $20m. He continues to skate, innovate, and design some 30 years after he won his first world championship at the age of 11. Mullen spends his spare time thinking about open source communities, hacking the urban terrain, and transforming the mundane into something new. He'll be featured in the upcoming documentary, "The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography."

pure respect....
Love your tribute videos on your TH-cam channel Jonny, thank you.
Re-watch this jonny giger
this is amazing. good to see someone be able to learn so much from things most people wouldn't think twice about. i loved it
John Hill His 'Art Of Manufacturing' interview would likely be super relevant to you.
He really drops some facades in that one...or rather, speaks through one of his more cold and analytical 'conscious operating systems'.
"Skateboarding doesn't make you a skateboarder: Not being able to stop skateboarding makes you a skateboarder." - Lance Mountain
I doubt that people from outside of the skateboarding community will really grasp what Rodney was was trying to convey here, partially because he is so humble. To call him the grandfather of street skating is an understatement, he gave us the building blocks of every modern trick. More than that, he was an outcast inside of the community who was doubted and slighted for his innovations by others who couldn't keep up. He persevered and outlasted them all, and now everyone recognizes his talent.
Yes thats what he has told
I could literally listen to him speak on this topic for 8 hours straight. He is so passionate and consumed with his love for skateboarding, it is simply inspirational to watch. Mullen is a legend and his legacy will live on forever. Now I wanna go SKATE!
His humility is incredible, he is the most innovative skateboarder ever yet he doesn't let that influence his personality or lifestyle.
Definetly the most influential skater... some many people looked up to him... I still consider you the best Rodney...
I have an incredible amount of respect for this man. He's the one who got me into skateboarding 4 years ago after reading his autobiography for a school summer reading assignment. soon after i bought a skateboard and I've done it since then. thank you, rodney.
Context shapes Content... This man, is one of the most humble and sensitive artists I have ever seen. This talk just made my day.
Legend. Meeting him in person was one of the best moments of my life
One of the most humble and genuine human beings out there! If you don’t love Rodney, YOU’RE the problem
A true lesson of humility. Thanks a lot Rodney for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Shure there is something to learn from you.
I gotta go skate now!
If anybody can let others know how much fun it is to be on a skateboard, it's gotta be Mullen, he's very good at articulating.
In a sport there is always up and comers labeled as "the next Wayne Gretzky" or next "Michael jordan" but there was never the next Rodney mullen in the most literal sense he's one in a million.
Its like a brotherhood and depending how good you skate, how good your style is, or just the way you go about skateboarding you gain a sense of respect from others and give respect to other people
There hasn't been a time that I've gone out and skated and not thought about Rodney Mullen and his ability to simplify every trick that I consider hard or "impossible". He is truely a living inspiration.
Mullen is an extremely dedicated hard working living legend genius and said it like it is. skateboarding is an awesome creative artform which even though can really hurt you keeps you coming back for more cos it feels so amazing!
Rodney Mullen is seriously super smart. He's Einstein on a skateboard. It was nice to hear him actually speak in front of people. Every time I've heard him, it's been brief. Whether freestyle died or not, he did a lot for skateboarding and I think skaters should really take that in. He will always be remembered as one of the best.
He is so simple and humble. I really like this guy. Nice TEDtalk! :)
simple is a terrible word to describe him, but yeah hes a genuine guy. nobody could explain skating better than this
Agreed. I didn't mean simple as a very basic person who has nothing special about him, but rather he is just down-to-earth. :) So you are right-- that was a terrible word to use. haha
what an absolute visionary and beautiful mind. genius at it's purest form. the perfect marriage of blissful passion and God given talent.
our art forms are very different, Mr. Mullen, but your honest love for what you do is nothing short of invigorating. it makes me want to find deeper levels of what I do and give back to MY community. if I can do a fraction of what you've done, I can die a happy man. thank you, Mr.Mullen.
Amazing. Such a beautiful use of language he has.
originality + exemplary = genius... im glad more people are able to know how much a person contributed to a movement, sport and lifestyle. good job TED having RM speak for 18 minutes.
I respect nobody more than Mullen. Everyone should read his biography it's so inspirational.
Rodney Mullen is an amazing skater and an amazing person, the talk (as usual) was very inspirational.
I can't recommend his autobiography enough. It's in my top ten, and I read a lot.
What's the name of the book please ? I wan't to buy it
Thanks a lot ! I will definitely buy it
obscenecommenter Thank you I didn't know he'd written one. I welcome any exposure to that brain. Extraordinary human being.
Thank you! Ordering now.
Amazing! I grew up skating and watching this guy's videos. He's amazing. Just by listening to him speak you can feel his passion and his energy about skating. That's definitely what matters in life. I just loved his speech. Glad he's doing well.
Such a humbling experience to see Rodney again. There couldn't be anyone else who i'd be more proud to represent for skateboarding.
Rodney's insight and eloquence is amazing. I am a teacher of "tweens"and will show this video to try to encourage this dynamic exchange of ideas and contributions in their lives. Remember your lack of direction as a 7th or 8th grader? This video may inspire them to contribute their own precious talents in meaningful ways and value the cyclic flow of others' talents coming back to them. THANK YOU, RODNEY FOR OPENING MY EYES, RENEWING MY PASSION, AND RELEASING DIFFERENT MOTIVATION.
Michael Estenson I hope you did! Not one but two of my most cherished moments as a high school teacher involved skateboarding. My favorite was after I'd said I believe it has to be the most difficult of any sport to learn & I marvel at how easy it's made to look but takes an almost "insane" dedication. A student almost screamed, "I can't believe I met a teacher who actually respects skateboarders! You have no idea how much that means to me!" That kid has no idea how much it meant to me to know I helped him feel valued & respected instead of like an outsider. I often felt like an outsider as a teacher bc I didn't fit the mold but I was a great teacher & moments like that made me feel like I was home. Wow quite the ramble but Im glad I said all that :)
In the 80's and 90's, there was the best skaters in the world, then there was Rodney who was from another planet I have seen 6 foot 5, 250lb grown men brought to tears watching him skate with the same effect a powerful magician stuns his audience. Rodney taught me about "learning how to learn" and is without a doubt one of the greatest geniuses that has ever lived. I owe him a lot for being such a powerful influence on my life and am happy to see him get such recognition after all these years.
11:00 I noticed this in I think his virtual reality part where he does a double flip and keeps his leg extended and catches the board for a Caspar slide. The extension of his leg in doing the flip is perfect for also catching the board, and he did it all in one economical movement. It was incredible to see and shows what he meant as a kid when he replied to a reporter what separates him from other skaters is his mind. He’s not combining tricks but combining sub movements as he says which can then create new tricks.
I’m a musician so I can understand that concept in music how when you’re inspired by a piece, to rip it off well is when nobody can even tell that you were inspired by it. Because you’re taking an aspect from it
I remember when I started skating back in '85, Rodney Mullen was insanely great and here I was, 5 years younger than him and couldn't fathom doing what he could with a board. After kinda beating myself up for a while, I realized that what he does is completely different than what I was doing which was skating vert ramps. Vert was all the rage and both Per Welinder and Rodney Mullen were the kings of freestyle (as he said, eventually evolving into street skating). It wasn't long after that we started copying his tricks and applying them to vert ramps. He gave us vert guys the tools to create and do tricks that only days, weeks before, seemed physically impossible. I could listen to him all day long. I have been out of skating for so long but my respect for him has never dwindled. When my son started skating, I sat him down and we watched Rodney Mullen videos for hours. I told him, "This is the man who literally changed the sport, skills and limits of skating. He is the best out there." Mr. Mullen, thanks for being an inspiration to two generations of my family! All the accolades and compliments are well deserved!
On Style- You see a silhouette of them, and you know who it...
On Creativity, Innovation in sport and tech- knowing a technology so well that you can steer it and make it do stuff it wasn't intended to do... Maybe not authorized, but not illegal..
On Drive- What is it that will punch you and make you do something...
Possibly the most inspirational skater ever.
including one of the best skaters.
plan b - second hand smoke, changed my life. I show it to my 4 year old now and he gets psyched on it. RM is and always has been totally inspiring - thanks for posting this
This is what happens when a scientists chooses skateboarding instead.
Inspiring! My favorite TEDtalk yet!
amazing, rodney mullen is the most inspiring person, and not only in skating, he just inspires me to be creative and enjoy anything, but especially skating
One of my favorite TED talks, hands down.
Wanna know what passion looks like? Watch a Rodney Ted talk. One of my favorite skateboarders, the greatest. Truly beautiful soul.
5:27 "those are super fun...and actually not that hard" 5:35 "simple as that right, no biggie" hahahaha bastard. Makes it so easy. LEGEND!!
What an extremely intelligent guy.. And also the most complex and skilled street skater there ever was...
Great talk Mullen! Listening to innovators and early pioneers from different fields from music , sports , creative arts etc they for the most part always seem to have this similar incredible open mindset. Watching old skool Bones Brigade / Z Boys documentaries has the same feeling of watching old skool Hip Hop documentaries. That raw untapped essence of Revolution makes things change after it.
I can still remember Mullen in the 80's - always some brand spanking new trick that inspired you. We can all learn something from this talk about finding the purity in skateboarding and remembering why we started skating to begin with.
Hopping on the internet with TED as my homepage and having Rodney Mullen show up right on top made me forget what stress is.
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. I love Rodney Mullen.
i have never expected to have this kind of lesson from a skateboarder... he is a path finder of freedom beyond his profession...
The guy is a freakin' genius. He's so far ahead of the average person that he comes of as a weirdo.
😅 mams
I love Rodney! He is such an inspiration! He makes me want to create and contribute!
I love thus guy! Funny how long I've been watching this guy skate and how little I've heard him speak until just recently. He's one of our generation's greatest minds!
The best video on youtube today! What an inspiration!
No he is just so free both in body and mind. Thats why he is like he is, always himself.
A living legend! Rodney respect, love and peace. Skating is nothing without your input!
Love it!!! Rodney is a very talented skater and after watching this i am realizing he is very smart and someone i can learn from. Makes me want to go create some more videos on my TH-cam Channel! Thanks Rodney for the inspiration.
I recently had ACL surgery and all I do is sit around and think of what I'm going to do when I get back on the board. It's far from innovation but when I land it, it will probably be the greatest feeling I've ever experienced haha. Thanks for everything Rodney!
This was the most i've ever seen Rodney speak. Great guy!
He reminds me of Tom Penny, in that he does it for the LOVE.
We are sharing this as TimeShip Video of the Day on our homepage for the next few. Amazing, thanks Rodney and TED!
In a way, I could understand what he was saying. Skating is about the fun, It's about what you make it. No two people really see it the same way, They do it for their own reasons in their own ways. This man is my biggest hero, He's just got this thing about his skating and how he uses it that i love. On a level, He's a kid somewhat and I respect that. I really do hope to meet him one day.
the best - so humble
That was .......awesome, to say the least!! Thank you Mr. Mullen!!!
I love this guy, I remember seeing his videos on tony hawk games back in the day, and the first thing I realized was that Rodney was the Creative Genius.
Best TED seminar ever!
WOW hes a great speaker, I've watched all his speaking videos in 2 days, when I was younger I never got to hear him talk, hes a genius and hes right skating is mostly mental which I found out on my own.
awesome... it's about reinventing yourself -- and evolving... he shows it's possible...
Daewon Song and Rodney Mullen the two goats of street skateboarding
Hats off to the King. Mullen. 46 and still pushin. humbled.
Damn, that's passion for skateboarding right there. Even though I haven't been active in skating for about 7 years, I still watch and read about skateboarding. I don't think I will ever completely drop skating out of my life.
way better than a new video part in my mind. he understands the heart of skateboarding
Greatest skater, he´s so smart and funny in this vid.... When I started with skateboarding , about 8 years ago, i watched his videos everyday. It´s living legend, thank you Rodney!
HIs section the Plan B - Second Hand Smoke video was legendary!
i love how excited he is about the tricks!
The legend , the inspiration , the man , Rodney Mullen , would love to meet him
i really love his energy!
Amazing, inspiring speech!
Perfectly put.
Wow,.. just wow... quite the breath of fresh air.
and by "his people" what I mean is skaters. Cause all true skateboarders know that they are part of a global family and it just keeps growing because the skateboarding community all across the globe is so accepting of people. Ive been skateboarding for a good while and I guarantee that I could get up tomorrow, travel all the way across the globe to a random skatepark and instantly become friends with the people who skate there.
Brilliant. I will remember parts of this speech.
Amazing speech, loved it.
skategod. am so proud to have been skating with him in the mid 80's a fantastic skater and person :)
Always come back to it...A talent being so humble. our world is full of the opposite unfortunately. We should all take him as an example in life and our world would be a much better place. Peace!
I Honestly Had No IDEA He Was So Intelligent. I Always Thought He Was The Greatest Skater But This Is Amazing.
So inspiring

What a legend! Will always be a skateboard hero!
how does he make it look so easy? by watching this i feel like i could go out and do an impossible land on a manual then grind a bench but in reality id break every bone my face.
"It's that there's an intrinsic value in creating something for the sake of creating it." - Skateboarding right there.
@ 1:20 mark, is that in front of pattys pub?
this man is awesome; mental and physical.
Rodneys So Amazingg, He'z Like, On Another Level!
