Please, do not be scared to charge to 100 percent daily. If you want to be on the safe side, charge to 95 percent daily. Will not impact your car as much as you think. Supercharger is more tasking on the batteries than charging 95 percent daily. Just don't charge to 100, and let it sit for a long time. Charge to 100, start using as soon as you can.

Nope, don't do that with Li Ion batteries. It's the other way round, fast charging isn't really harmful, but (often) fully charging is. I spoke to battery scientists about that.

I concur. There's much confusion even among the Tesla salesforce about the battery the Model Y RWD gets in the US. While it is an LFP battery in Canada, it is a conventional one in the US. Not sure if it is the same as the former RWD briefly available in 2022, but it is definitely not LFP. I test drove one this weekend and it clearly said on the charging tab that it should be charged at 80% for daily use. Incredibly, I received the same day an email from one of the many Tesla advisors I talked to that it saying it was LFP. Also, most advisors ignore the current promotions, like free supercharging transfer and the $1,000 discount for Cybertruck reservation holders. I had to show the emails I received from Tesla! Tesla should pay me for training their folks :)
One more question is the top charging rate. I read in the press it was 170 kW but one of the Tesla peeps said it was 150. Haven't found any official note from Tesla on this. 170 kW is the rate for the LFP so I am leery of additional confusion between the two RWD batteries.

Yeah it needs to be a LFP if it’s lower then 300 miles especially since long range now says keep it at 80% for daily driving 220 miles (310 when new at 100%)

      80% of 310 is 248 not 220.
The Long Range is now at 330 miles so 80% of that is 264 miles. Plenty of range for most daily commuters.
Most people don't drive the entire range of the EV every day, so the Long Range vehicle is the one to choose for the price.
If you happen to do an occasional weekend road trip, charging to 90% on the road or 100% before leaving home is pretty easy and won't hurt the Long Range battery.

I went on the Tesla site to shop for a Model Y and asked for a call back on their RWD. When I got the call it was from a Washington DC location. The first rep didn’t know whether it had an LFP battery so he said he’d look into it and call me back. A different rep called me back and confirmed it was not an LFP battery- based on the recommended charging to 80% in the software. Disappointing, but I’d probably still opt for that one for the price.

So many other channels still reference the LFP RWD M Y that just doesn’t exist in the US.

I have been curious about my 2023 RWD Model Y and have been looking for information. December 14, 2023 was when I took it home. I don't know when it started to do so, but the car definitely tells you that it is Lithium-Ion in the information, and the owner's manual tells you to charge up to 80%. A little disappointed because I was looking forward to the LFP battery and the longer range. It is still a great car.
I had been driving my Leaf since 2012 when I got it brand new. I loved it too but the range was definitely limiting and the last nail in the coffin was when it needed a new on-board charger. Definitely an upgrade with the Model Y.

Makes 2024 even more interesting with potential pricing of these cars given its possible only the new model 3 highland doesn't qualify for the full $7500 credit in 2024?
Makes me think new model 3 will have to be at the 40k price, otherwise it could be more expensive then the rwd y.....
All we trully know so far is current LFP battery will most likely only get $3750 credit starting in 2024. So any additional price increases for the new highland make it much more expensive car than the current version since even at the same price as current model, it will cost $3750 more because of reduced credit - which is counter to all the cost saving benefits of the "building" of the vehicle. So confusing.

    • @pepstein
      @pepstein 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree 100% You don't Supercharge over 80% unless you really have to, regardless of battery chemistry. Charging slows down at higher states of charge, and by 80% it's already quite slow. I'd argue battery chemistry has almost no effect on road trips. With either chemistry, you'll charge to 100% before leaving home, and you'll ride the bottom of the pack the rest of the time, stopping as frequently as necessary to optimize total trip time, charging at the end of each day if you don't have access to overnight charging. Charging curves should be quite similar too.
It's daily driving where LFP adds useful range, but very few people push the limits of daily driving range anyway.

LFP cells are still made in China and would not be eligible for the full tax credit. This is probably the reason. I agree LFP would be the best choice for mid-range EVs. They can beat others that have 20% more range than them. Hopefully LFPs get made in the US some time soon
