- Fallout: New Vegas has been one of the most celebrated games in the franchise, however Bethesda Softworks has largely refused the games' developer, Obsidian Entertainment, the chance to make another one. The reasoning seems to be due to a combination of poor timing, bad luck on Obsidian's part, and Bethesda taking a new direction with their publishing.

Obsidian had less people, less funding and they managed to pull off the best Fallout
Edit: I actually love Bethesda & No one is denying Bethesda worked very hard in their games but personally I liked FNV better because of the story, level progression, random encounters, interesting story and mostly the creativity of the game

Mate, look at the similarity in performance and graphics between FO3 and FONV. It's clear that Obsidian were basically modders given appropriate tools by Bethesda to make it easier to develop FONV.

One day a friend of mine played Skyrim for the first time. He came out of Helgen and just wanted to go to Riften. He turned right and headed to the mountains. I was like "You cannot go over the mountains!?". He just laughed saying: "Those are bethesda mountains, I am sure I can bug my way over them somehow."
He was right.
Except that a first timer would have absolutely no reason to want to go to Riften specifically (wouldn't even know of the city in the first place). Not to mention you don't need to go over montains to get to Riften, you have a path on the right side of Helgen that takes you there, so if he had turned right on Helgen he wouldn't go over mountains. Stop trying to make bullshit excuses to hate on bethesda.
He came originally from Elder Scrolls Online so yeah, he knew Riften.
Thats also the reason he knew the "Bethesda mountains".

Also, don't forget, New Vegas was still massively unfinished. They were basically forced to push the game out of the door just barely tying it up before throwing it on shelves. If they actually had time, the Legion would be much more fleshed out, and way less of a generic evil faction, the rampant bugs would likely have been at a way lower percentage than what plagued the game, there wouldn't be nearly as much cut content like the Tops Promoter character, and justi n general the game would PROBABLY have been way better.

Fireflux obsidian agreed to the time frame they were given. They then went and didn't plan well enough to get it done in that time frame. Same thing had happened before when they made other games like kotor 2.
Yeahm, they agreed to that time frame, doesn't mean it was enough time to actually make New Vegas properly.
I always just heard that there was constant conflict between the two studios about how things were getting done...
I think it was something to the extent that a lot of the cut content was stuff that Obsidian wanted to do but Bethesda didn't want to give them time for/actively discouraged it by saying that the engine wouldn't be able to handle it.
Bethesda needs to get out of Obsidian's way and let them do what they do best. Obsidian does Elder Scrolls, Obsidian does Fallout - there is nothing to discuss for fuss about here.
Obsidian doing the Elder Scrolls would be the best course of action for everyone involved.

Actually, Bethesda had a deal with Obsidian that if Fallout NV got an 85 or higher on Metacritic then Bethesda would pay them a bonus. Obsidian began work and was on track to meet the projected deadline. Then Bethesda came in, told them to release it early, and left them little to no time for QA testing. Which is why Fallout NV was so buggy and glitchy upon release. Bethesda ACTIVELY SABOTAGED OBSIDIAN!
The Metactitic score was low, Obsidian didn't get paid, and then Bethesda came in and tried to headhunt employees and buy Obsidian's IPs for bargain prices. The ONLY reason that this plan didn't work is because Obsidian let a lot of employees go, and did a KICKSTARTER for their next game, Pillars Of Eternity 2.
Bethesda/ZeniMax pull this shit all the time. They fuck over small companies to lower their value and then buy them up. EA is notorious for it too and recently got caught trying this on Project Cars.

Ole Christian Henne Except it isn't entirely true. Obsidian has just accepted a very short term deal with Bethesda to create FNV in less than 2 years and that had a huge impact on the quality of FNV.
Plus if you'll look at the main story o FNV it doesn't make much sense after finding the antagonist.
Look at some of their other games as well, they created some of the most mediocre games ever.
KOTOR 2 got cut to pieces for release (though arguably that was actualy Lucast Arts fault this time)
NWN2 which while a good game is about as well optimized as GTA IV from what I understand.
Alpha Protocol was just a mediocre crap.
Dungeon Siege 3 was also buggy
And Armored Warfare which, granted had some shitty publisher behind it (my.com) but it turned out to be a World of Tanks clone... And a mediocre one at that.
All in all Obsidian may have some great writers but their programmers are complete and utter shit.
Funnily enough it seems to be somewhat oposite of Bethesda as they have horrible writers but their programmers tend to do a good work with what they have (maybe exception Fallout 4's optimization which again sucks).
Also, in Bethesda's defence, I have not heard id Software or Machine Games complain about them as the publisher. Doom 2016, Wolfenstein The New Order and The New Colossus turned out to be great games.
If Beth was really that bad all three of them would've turned out the same way new NFS and SW:BF2 (2017) wouldn't it?

Anthony Lima yeah I agree plus I just can't connect with a voiced protagonist, I liked the first 3 mass effect games and shepard was cool but I just couldn't connect with him (he was a guy for me) because instead of this being a digital implementation of my sub conscious and giving him what ever personality I wanted, I was just controlling the actions of one guy and setting up his personality.
Now the first games does the voiced protagonist right, you get to choose everything shepard says and there's a good bit of dialog to make him or her say, the other two games not so much.
The only other game asides from the first mass effect that does a voiced character right is the witcher 3 with geralt.

Just because there were bugs doesn't mean it didn't go through QA. People often "how could they not know about this bug?", well usually QA already did find the bug but the higher up decided not to allocate time for it.
Bethesda was so dickish about the metacritic thing. Tying bonuses to notoriously flakey metacritic scores was not cool. Especially since it was one point off.

D Harlo for me fnv was better than 4 because it had, or at least felt like it had more depth and character. Also fuck voiced protagonists for obvious reasons. That took so much away from the game.

It removes all choice and role playing and RPG elements in exchange for gunplay and settlement building, both of which mean jack shit to fallout compared to story, which it fails at doing completely.

Not by far better than Fallout 3 but I guess it would be accurate to say it is the best. Fallout 3 is a masterpiece just as FNV is.

What if Obsidian and Bethesda unite? I mean, Bethesda could do the world, the 3d models and all that, and obsidian could do the story, and the artwork. That way we get the best of both studios. Im sure that way we could get a real good fallout game.

Bethesda is great at world design and atmosphere, hate on Fallout 3 all you want, but imo the world and atmosphere of that game is so much beter than New Vegas (I personally think New vegas is the beter game tho) if you could combine that with obsidians story telling and rpg elements that would be really amazing
Bethesda doesn't need Obsidian. They have plenty of developers owned by the same company that owns Bethesda. Ubisoft didn't use Obsidian for their new South Park game. Publishers are going to prefer to work with in house developers rather than third party developers. If Bethesda were to work with Obsidian again it would undoubtedly be with some IP (and probably genre) that none of the in house studios are working with.
Finally, someone who's not a Obsidian elitist. We have to accept that both do shit wrong and both do shit well.
They don't trust Obsidian because they know they'll do a much better job than Bethesda will. All jokes aside, I don't hate Fallout 4. I just think it was a massive step down from New Vegas. And I've got a feeling most people agree with at least that part of my opinion. New Vegas just had so much more depth than Fallout 4.

Fact of the matter is FO4 was a smash success, selling more copies than every other Fallout game combined.

Also; New Vegas isn't even really a Fallout game. It's story isn't a "Fallout" story, it's just set in the Fallout Universe.
Honestly, i hear what you're saying, but i feel that NV had a deep story depth where everything and every dlc intertwined with the overall story. But it lacked a world depth. There's not much noticable change in the game world. In fallout 4, if you build strong settlements, and explore, and kill shit, you'll notice that enemies become less abundant, you'll subtly tame the commonwealth. I have about 800-ish hours in fallout 4, all my settlement are huge, and i can't find shit to fight lol. Respawns get delayed quite a bit after you do more. I think that was apart of the survival mode update though
@nicholas yeah well the Obsidian guys had been talking about those stories they used in NV for years before they ever started on the game. And then Bethesda handed them a working game engine.
Honestly, you can't ask for many more things in your favor.
Whereas say Fallout 3, Bethesda had to start their own story, without messing up the old story. They're only on their second fallout game; considering the improvements in just raw fun between FO3 and FO4, as well as the astronomical mod support for FO4 (I'm currently playing an Enclave storyline mod.) I'm excited to see where FO5 goes.
One thing about Bethesda that I respect is that there is nothing sacred in how they make a game; if they think they can make it better they go for it. Sometimes it works (melee combat in the TES games has steadily improved with some pretty drastic changes) and sometimes it doesn't (magic has been nerfed in TES for the last 5 games for no reason I can understand)
The thing is, FO4 was never meant for a single playthrough to go for 1000+ hours. It's not an MMO. Do you have 600 hours on a single Witcher 3 save?
I usually only put a couple hundred hours at most into a playthrough myself.
Fallout 4 is a great game once you mod it so fucking hard it’s almost unrecognizable from the shitheap they released. And even then all the mods in the world can’t fix how fucking awful the writing is
Maybe now that Bethesda and Obsidian are united under Microsoft, they could get another chance for making a new FO game.

Well Obsidian does make better RPGs. Bethesda hasn't made a real RPG since Morrowind or arguably daggerfall. Even Oblivion was a dumbed down RPG. Skyrim streamlined it, and Fallout 4 kicked it in the balls.

Obsidian Entertainment wrote better story, script, despite of the shitty engine, the story, my bonds and attachment to the characters are strong! Fallout New Vegas is far much more memorable than F3 or F4 combined.

Sure do. I also know that war like Bethesda's game engine never changes. Morrowind"s modkit recognizes Fallout 4's game engine, they use for the most part the same console commands.

It's funny that "trust" is the word being used here, because Bethesda are the ones who cannot be trusted with Fallout. I all ready consider New Vegas to be the overall superior game to 3 and 4, but imagine how good it would have been if they actually gave Obsidian a reasonable amount of time to finish the game.
Now don't get me wrong, I do still love Fallout 3, it had it's flaws and shortcomings, but I forgive Bethesda because it was their first attempt with Fallout, and it was a very noble first attempt. But with 4 they should have known better.
Dude yes! I have a soft spot for Fallout 3, but New Vegas was the title that convinced me to buy 1 & 2 in physical format. I just started playing 4 and it's alright. Nothing too crazy but they played it so safe. I want another West Coast story.. maybe revisiting Los Angels and having San Francisco and San Diego as DLC. 😍😍😍

It's like they said fuck everyone who played NV and FO3. I bought it on sale and I'm glad I did because i was really let down by the lack of depth and player choice in the vanilla run. S never had to use mods ro enjoy a fallout game. It says a lot if most people prefer to play it modded. To me, FO4 is only worth the time if it's modded. Even with the DLC's, the vanilla game lacks story, features (game mechanics that tie into hard-core survival), depth and player's choice.
Professional reviewers LITERALLY only give a game a rating depending on what the publisher paid them to give it.
There is a reason the only reviews that are taken seriously by consumers are user reviews.

The reason why consumers in general don't take "professional" reviews seriously is because there aren't enough of those to get a precise general opinion, and the fact that those reviews are written by people who get the games for free doesn't help either.
Also how would you expect a game to use textures and the engine from the previous games and get an equal score? That would be literally impossible unless the story was something was like the story of Spec Ops with the gameplay of Team Fortress 2 having a baby.

Protip: Goodsprings has at least 2 stealth boys you can use to get past the Deathclaws and the trader sells HP ammo for the varmint rifle, that will take care of the Cazadores. The game is just as linear as you want.
In a way both Skyrim and Fallout, including Fallout 4 have put you on a pseudo-linear path.
The general path in Fallout 4 is always from Sanctuary to Concord to Diamond City, then to save Valentine. From there you're pretty much guaranteed to split off into sidequests, that is if you're not the kind of person that likes to roleplay with a sense of urgency. From Valentine's rescue, the meetup with Kellogg is pretty much a knockout. That's the point in the story where I always started fucking around with sidequests.
For New Vegas, it's typically Goodsprings to taking care of the powder gangers (to beef your character up) to Primm (where you first decide your attitude towards the NCR), then Nipton (where you first decide your attitude towards the legion), then Novac(where you meet your first companion) and finally New Vegas. From there is usually where I would throw myself into sidequests after dealing with Benny because the urgency of revenge wore off.
The thing about New Vegas was that through this so called linear path they threw alot more sidequests your way than Fallout 4 did, it's paced well, and unlike Fallout 4 if you're roleplaying you don't have to focus on finding your only son 24/7. For the courier finding his killer is just a matter of good old fashioned revenge, and he can bide his time.
If I had to choose I'd say Skyrim has the shortest so-called linear path in the beginning of the game, and not only leaves plenty of room between points for sidequests, but pretty much suggests/somewhat strongarms you into partaking in them (finding the dragonstone early). As a game where you only level up skills by partaking in them, it rewards you for doing sidequests in Riverwood and Whiterun before you decide to climb the 7,000 steps to high hrothgar so that you're ready for that damned frost troll on the way up, rather than just leveling every part of the story to the character like fallout has a bad habit of doing.
I'm not on the "FUCK BETHESDA" bandwagon, but I still love New Vegas and play it from time to time.
i'm going through a robco certified playthrough right now and yeah i agree this fuck bethesda bandwaggon is really anoying.... i love bethesda's game but i can still say they mess up from time to time but they arn't known for steller bug free games.... plus asking for a bug free game just makes people fucking dumb because every recent game i have played for the past 15 / 20 years has been buggy as fuck

I tend to agree that visiting new locations in the Fallout universe is a better option than visiting ones we've already seen. Especially because it's less likely to interfere with the lore and "canonical" endings for previous games. I mean, Fallout has been around this long and we have so many games set in the universe and we still have *_NO IDEA_* what's going down in the American South-East coast. At all. That said, I wouldn't be upset if we did return to New Vegas, so long as it was done well. I trust Obsidian to do it well. Don't let Bethesda fucking touch it with a 10-foot pole, however.

It doesnt matter if they had all of the origional team working on that PoS. they did not and will never know what fallout is now. I think the main problem with Bethesda is that they don't like to innovate. It has become known as "Bugthesda" for a reason, it doesn't have the resource/skill to develop a new engine (or at least fix the old one). Outsourcing to Obsidian would nullify all their stupid efforts (read paid mods, broken VR etc.) to keep milking their old assets with almost no cost at all. I'm sure that a FNV2 by Obsidian would perform better than ANY other title sold by Beth since now, the playerbase has finally realized how lazy and greedy Bethesda is
Are you serious? They... dont like to innovate? Yes, they certainly hate to change things. Its not like they had to make two new systems for Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Its not like the biggest and most well known complaint is about them adding in voice acting for player characters. They certainly did not open the closed off limitations of former RPGS by making skills matter rather than classes. Its not like they absolutely crushed the market because of Skyrim's openness, or Morrowind's story. Its not like Bethesda can afford to innovate, after all. As for the paid mods and Broken VR... every VR is broken right now, its a trial thing. Paid Mods is... a very risky thing they did that I do not agree with existing, but I can see the purpose of it in creating more content, though so far it has been... lackluster.
Look, I dont care about fallout too much, its a decent game franchise, but NV was not some innovative miracle like you people talk it up to be. It used the same systems, the same mechanics for said system, the same basic rules, and a bit? better graphics. The main benefit of it was the story, which was pretty decent. Not Morrowind, mind you, but its hard to compete with that. Talking it up like that is only going to make you hate other games, but when you go back to play NV its going to be... bland to you again. At best, youll see it as an emotional thing, where you have to like it or you are proving yourself wrong, rather than just seeing whether or not it stands up now.

Actually, it was Interplay and Black Isle Studios that made Fallout. Sold the license to Bethesda, 'cause they went bankrupt. Obsidian's largely the remnants of those studios, so that's why they did the games the most justice.

John Gonzalez, the guy who was pretty much behind the main conflict scenario between the NCR, Legion, House and Yes Man over the Hoover Dam as well as the survivalist subplot in Honest Hearts went on to be the lead writer of Horizon Zero Dawn. Chris Avellone bailed because he wasn't satisfied with the management at Obsidian, and a ton of other writers and quest designers were all laid off after the whole metacritic thing went down. Really one of the only major contributors to New Vegas that's still at Obsidian is Josh Sawyer.
Chris Avellone joined Larian Studios, the produces of the Divinity games.

There's some inaccurate statements on this video:
-The layoffs Obsidian suffered were after the fact of completing their work with New Vegas. It was due to the cancelation of their Stormlands project for Microsoft (a recent Eurogamer article goes into detail about this, but we have known since they kickstarted project Eternity), and the innability to get that pitch picked by other publishers or other projects (ultimately, that pitch would get heavily reworked into Tyranny, released last year and published by Paradox). This was also mixed with the breaking down of THQ when they were working with them for South Park, something that didn't help, but it was mostly Stormlands that screw them up bad. The Bethesda involvment into the layoffs was due to a poor quote by Brian Fargo (InXile CEO, previous Interplay CEO) where he talked about Obsidian missing the bonus for New Vegas and things kinda were assumed from that point on. Missing bonus for a project won't cause a studio to have massive layoffs and basically being on the verge of shutting down.
-Chris Avellone wasn't New Vegas lead writer, that was John González (who went to work at Ubisoft for Shadows of Mordor, and then went to Guerrilla to be narrative lead for Horizon Zero Dawn). Chris involvment with New Vegas is greatly exagerated due to the rabid fanbase the guy has (this isn't a knock on him, I'm part of that rabid fanbase). He was moslty in charge of writting one companion (Ulysses was his other companion to write but it got cut) and give general feedback in terms of writing and design, there's several interviews about it. He was greatly involved with 3 of the 4 DLCs however, being the project director for them. Also, you fail to mention how the project lead of New Vegas, Josh Sawyer, is still at Obsidian working on Pillars of Eternity, and they added since then Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky to their ranks, names that any Fallout fan (and Arcanum) should know like it was the Gospel, and they're now in charge of an unnanounced project.
-The Armored Warfare layoffs are nowhere near the level of the previous layoffs. This one was going to happen regardles once Obsidian stopped working on the game. These are the type of layoffs every independent developer goes when they finish a contract and they have employed people specifically for said contract. The only notable thing about them is that they were bigger than usual due to how Armored Warfare demanded Obsidian to grow (they had more than 120 people constantly working on the project), but that's it. Since the Project Eternity kickstarter of 2012 that saved them from oblivion, Obsidian has been as healthy as it has ever been, in all likelyhood more healthy than ever.
There's also several statements you made that confused me, like when you talked about Bethesda reworking the engine and having it finished as soon as 2012 like they could have just gone and give it to Obsidian either to make Fallout 4 for themselves or make a New Vegas style game while Bethesda made the fourth entry. Fallout 4 was never in the cards for Obsidian to tackle, and if Bethesda were interested in repeating the New Vegas situation, Obsidian wouldn't have gotten involved until Fallout 4 was released, maybe even after the DLC release (which was the case with New Vegas). Even if the engine for Fallout 4 was already done as soon as 2012, Bethesda wouldn't have put that technology in another project that has great overlap with what Bethesda themselves were making.
Also, don't look at New Vegas credits as if that was the extent of Obsidian workforce. New Vegas peaked at 50 employers, but Armored Warfare had, like I said earlier, 120. Obsidian has been a 150-200 man company for a fairly long time, they are bigger than Bethesda Game Studios by sheer manpower alone, they just work very differently, dividing themselves on multiple teams of various sizes depending on the projects they're working on, while BGS mostly works as a single entity.
But ultimately, you're right that, right now, Bethesda is looking for internal developments instead of working with independent studios, that much is true. If they make another New Vegas styled spin off, there's absolutely no chance that it doesn't go to one of the studios they own (my money would be on Arkane).

It helps if you don't think of it as an RPG. I think of it as a free-form shooter and dungeon crawler hybrid - with a bit of the Sims mixed in. That said, they _really_ need to work on developing the setting beyond the graphics.
One thing that constantly bugged me was that the story wanted you to think you were in a post-apocalyptic, survivalist, hard-scrabble world. However, in the actual game world there is no scarcity. You find food, water, healing supplies, and ammunition all over the place - even places that by all rights should have been completely looted more than a century ago. Add to that all of the mysteriously operational infrastructure that is in place (working plumbing, lights, running terminals, etc) and the game feels like it takes place maybe a decade or two after the bombs dropped, not centuries.
My favorite example of this was this computer terminal at the edge of the glowing sea. The building this terminal is in is at a steep slant, has no roof, missing walls, completely exposed to the New England elements for centuries... and yet there atop a slightly soiled wooden desk is a fully functional _and running_ computer terminal with intact data.
Speaking of the glowing sea - that makes NO fucking sense. Ignoring that it's the only ground zero in the entire series that was so radioactive that it effects the climate, I have to ask how anyone is still alive in the Commonwealth. I mean, if we're in a scarce, post apocalyptic world not-everyone can afford Rad-Away, right?

skywolf23 agreed, cdpr would be the best and obvious choice for a got rpg. However they are completely busy with cyberpunk 2077. So i think that obsidian would be the next best option. The only option if bethesda were to do it, would be to give it to arcane studios. I think they are a great studio and would be up to the challenge.

New Vegas’ storyline including its DLCs was so jarring I have a hard time loving that game. Fallout 3 and 4 are my favourites by far. I liked the features in New Vegas, but for me to get properly invested into a game I have to love the storyline too. I think in the end Ulysees killed it for me, just the insane amount of riddle talk he did was utterly confusing for me.

It's impossible to have Bethesda's games bug-free due to the amount of variables and code running in the background.
1) Obsidian still has some of the guys from BlackIsle (the studio that made Fallout 1 and worked on 2)
2) I personally believe Obsidian is better at making RPGs than Bethesda. There's very little difference between Fallout 4 and Farcry 4.
3) New Vegas, despite being overwhelmingly loved, was developed on massive time constraints. There would've been so much more to an already incredible game had they not been pressured to meet a strict deadline.
Personally I think Fallouts 1, 2, and New Vegas are far better RPGs than Fallout 3 or 4. I still like you, Bethesda, but I *love* Obsidian.

If Chris Avellone is not at Obsidian... then there's no need to have Obsidian work with Fallout again. Avellone was the creative mind behind KOTOR 2, NW2 and Fallout NV, three of the best PC RPGs of all time, not to mention one of the main guys at Fallout 2. With him gone, there's really no point.
Funny thing, Chris Avellone is the writer of the new Prey, which is also a Bethesda game developed by Arkane Studios, so i guess there is a chance Bethesda will hire Chris Avellone to write for future Fallout title.
I really disliked KOTOR 2 compared to the original and didn't care for NV so that's aplus for me.

Avellone only left Obsidian Entertainment in 2015 and turn freelancer. And they hire him for Prey which release this year.
Joshua Sawyer is great too and Obsidian has Tim Cain now. Joshua was the one who designed characters like Caesar and Graham.

It's just too bad most of the people who used to work at Black Isle and early Obsidian are gone now. Hopefully their techniques and thought processes rubbed off on their currently remaining peers. that introduced me and all my friends to Fallout. When fallout 4 came out, I don't know if it was a gut feeling but I just didn't feel like playing it. My friends did and most of them unfortunately regretted it.

Obsidian did a phenomenal job with FONV especially considering the limited time they had. However that was due to the Obsidian staff at the time, largely composed of former interplay fallout alums. Pretty much none of those staff are with Obsidian now, so giving them fallout would be counter productive.

I have seen almost no one and you have seen a lot of people, most likely it is actually somewhere in the middle, hence why people are already so divided over this. This is almost as bad as the NV-FO3/4 divide and the game aint even out xD
