Thank you for the fantastic content. I'm just starting to frame out a very small (14' diameter) silo for a friend to use as studio space. This has helped me sort out a bunch of questions and given me more ideas to use.

Dude u have some serious skill!!!!! Great job dude! After watching, a critical thing was showing the total creation, with the containers! That really created a desire to continue to watch!! Man, u got it!!! And a foamed microphone will help your wind, but u said that. Rock on man!! I’m subscribed!!!

Hey, have you thought about just taking the pipe out the wall and up on exterior. Instead of interior. Slekirk product maybe.

Any updates on how it's coming along?!! Love this concept! I've been considering adding a brock grain silo attached to my house I just finished building but on a much smaller scale. Looking at a 12' wide 16-20' tall . Going to be a dining room attached with a small enclosed hallway. I've done all the building of house myself but this new round construction really intimidates me especially connecting the hallway roof to a round silo. Had a few questions on insulating. I live in Michigan so get lots of snow and moisture. Plan on doing all the 2x6 framing inside but not sure if I should use like a reflective roll insulation along metal before the wood framing? Thoughts? Plan on finishing the interior with all knotty pine

Steve Christian, with this type of build I would suggest as spray foam insulation. I situated my studs about a 1/2” off the metal portion of the silo so that I can foam between the frame and the metal to prevent a thermal bridge. There maybe other ways to insulate, but I think condensation may be an issue.

Can you explain more of that mastic backing that you will use. I've got to do that too

I would use the Zip systems stretch tape to fill that gap in the junction between the silo roof and the silo sidewalls. I think the Zip stretch tape has a better bond. Cut the tape into smaller manageable pieces to make it easier to handle.

Hey great video! Can you send me a short clip how you attached the door hinges to the grain bin? I’m trying to cut out a door in my grain bin and not sure how to go about it. Thanks!

Might as well just have built a Round-House - the ceilings are too low and they've used a Forrest of wood.
Hope they are content with the outcome - its not going to retain much interior feel of the Silo -
There a replacement for wood made of Hemp Plant Stalks - would save trees and have a cost-effective durable farmed product -
    Best Wishes.

Beth Bartlett, I get a lot of these pipe dream comments about alternative building products made from hemp, bamboo, etc. The reality is that they are just not that available or cost effective, yet.

Can the silo be below ground? Like into a hill side allowing the door to be open while the rest covered?

Is there any other HVAC component to this project or is it just the one fan? I dont know where you reside but it seems like itd get pretty hot in a grain silo without proper ventilation

How did you go about floor plans for your house? We have an idea for ours but are struggling to put it on paper for our building permits. (CountrySiloFarm)

    • @TomofAllTrades

CommonGoatSenseLLC Business we hired an architect and structural engineer. It was an expensive part of the build, but it was worth the money. I came up with the dimensions for the silo and stacked shipping containers. The silos are 27’ and 18’ respectively.

@@TomofAllTrades Thank you so much for getting back to me. I will be sure to look up an architect and structural engineer in my area!

Genius idea to combine these two types of structures!!! I think I would have opted to have 4 shipping containers instead of 2. They would accommodate laundry / bathrooms up stairs and down... parallel to the stairway and leave each round space more open.

Hey my dad won’t let me do this on his property because he thanks the tax man will charge him a lot for the silo. Dose the tax guy ask you about it or even charge anything if they know it’s a house?

    • @TomofAllTrades
      @TomofAllTrades  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yep the tax man gets his cut. We had to get building permits, and when all the inspections are done you get an occupancy certification. They use that to start the tax process. We had to jump through many hoops with the county and zoning requirements.

It would be Residential Property Tax - local Tax Assessor can estimate a cost.
