Old silo now spaceship-esque tiny home in Berlin

  • After two years of living in a camper with his young daughter, architect Jan Körbes wanted something better suited to their active lifestyle, so he decided to realize a longtime dream of turning a grain silo into a microhome. With the help of his team at REFUNC, specialists in creative recycling, they bought an old grain bin from a farmer and set to work making it habitable.
Working with a footprint of 4m2 (43 square feet), the group started by adding floors to the space. The final home is 3 stories and includes a climbing wall as sole means of reaching the top floor bedroom. The middle floor includes a kitchen, toilet, and shower.
The crew built out the final space of 13m2 with a budget of about $27,000 and lots of recycled items (including floor, ceiling, and paneling). The home, an experiment in mobile living (it’s already moved once) dubbed "Silo City", fills in REFUNC’s portfolio of recycled microarchitecture which includes mobile shelters made from shrink-wrap, pallets, a retired ski gondola, and shipping containers and wind turbine blades.
“This is an example of an object which is industrial which after a certain lifespan is not used any longer,” explains Körbes. “And this is when we come in. So we analyze objects which could become microarchitecture, for example, this grain silo it’s actually a perfect size for a mini, mini, mini house.“

Actually I didn't fit it in to the edit, but he talked about how when he'd come home late and his daughter was asleep she learned to hang on to him even while sleeping as he climbed the wall (and then to instinctively let go when he reached the top/bed. It seems instinct kicks in even when you've had a night out.

His daughter stayed in the heated bathtub when she was sick, that seems like a pretty comfy spot to me. Also, the shower and toilet used to be inside originally, like he explained, so if you stay on the bottom floor when sick, everything is literally within arms reach. To me, that doesn't sound that bad, in fact, it might even be better than a big house, since you don't have to go far from your bed for anything.

Love this, it reminds me of a friend who lived both on his forties wooden fishing boat called Romance and a round tower like this on the shore. This was just outside of Vancouver on the river. The top of the tower was the bedroom with windows all around, and the view over the marshes and river was amazing. Love when people think and live outside the box.

I thought you had inspired me enough Kirsten. Before I watched that video I was wondering again which one of your video did I see first and it changed my life. Was it the couple of guys living in tnts in California and made a small heaven out of it? Or was it this incredible south American mother of one living in a container embracing "cheap luxury" or again this woman ina field of lavender leaving her house to her dadand moving in two joined containers with her companion? There was a before Kirsten's videos and after. My only regret is that I had never got a reply from you... :( but, all and all, this is just to tell you, again, how AMAZING is this guy! You thought you seen it all by now or getting close to, and POP, another crazy out of this world skilled artist genius. And Kirsten to film it all. Thank you!

Fantastic, how so much can be repurposed and not discarded into trash.. saving the enviroment the ecosystem and money.. how much win win can there be in a project... bravo - life is so simple and so gratifying, its a good thing his dad exposed him to experiences of life on a boat.. in his mind there are so many possibilities.. a genius thinking outside the box.

I love it how people are experimenting with all these methods to become humans that are hapier, more concious and more free in their lives. And that they do it with the things and capacities they have, like a diplome in architecture in his case. You can really follow this evolution of people looking for value and change of their lives, wich I think is very important. I'm from Belgium and I see a lot of unhappy people around me and I get frustrated becouse they think it will go away if they buy things, watch a nice series on netflix or eat loads of junkfood. I just can't imagine myself living like this. And therfore, these kind of projects and these kinds of people with their open mentalities really inspire me to become a more creative, aware and hapier person.
PS: I am looking forward to get some other opinions on my comment!!! :D
    Spread the positivity!!!
    Your dearest, Sophie

Though a little disgusting, I do believe the livingroom bathtub could serve in an emergency. Also the bedside window would do if you woke up with a stomach turning itself inside out.
Many health problems the western world is currently struggling with are connected to our inactive lifestyle. We sit too much and move too little. Though I can see some aspects being wildly impractical with this mini house, I do believe it would be good for our health in many ways. A short forced climb to reach a comfy bed would do us all good in the long run.
If you are handicapped, elderly or have very small children though, this build might simply not be for you. =)
