"Parakeet" is actually a catch-all name for a number of small parrot species. The birds that most people typically call parakeets are actually budgerigars, budgies for short. Hope that clears things up a bit.
Indian ringneck parakeets are not at all budgies. Conures are also in the parakeet sub-genre, but they are not budgies either. It normally refers to any Parrot small in size.

My friend, who was stressed out, smoked a lot, worked from home and was always on the phone got two parrots to play with. Hopefully to relax him. He tried to teach them some lines from Shakespeare, poetry etc. They weren't interested. They did however mimic the sound of him coughing, the phone, the doorbell and him shouting swear words. It was so confusing and even more stressful for him...but hilarious. Imagine....Ding dong...'Who is it?'...'Cough! cough..' ...'Piss off!' 'ring ring...ring ring.'...'Hello?'.. 'Cough..cough' ..'Ding dong' Piss off!'

My parrot of 40 years now resting in peace. Used to call me Mama mama it was pretty funny. He made kissing sounds all the time. When you told him he could not have are human food, he would fly into the kitchen onto the island and start stealing food off of the plates

They are a medium size parrot. The smallest parrots are parrotlets (followed closely by budgies), who can also talk. Also nice username Nancy Piglosi lol.

This gives me an idea, if i ever have a bird cage I'm going to make it myself out of natural wood, make it less of a cage and more of an enclosure for their safety. The wood would also be easier for them to grab onto so that they can comfortably climb up and down it as needed.
The wood would need sealing as the birds poop will seep into the grain and become a health hazard. The bird will become ill and die. This is why they use plastic or metal for cages as it's very easy to wipe down during cleaning time.

I can't think of a word to describe how sweet these guys are. They just are.💖
I don't know a lot about birds but one thing I have wondered is if they understand the words they are using. when the bird told the other bird to kiss and the other bird gave a kiss it would seem they understand what they are saying.
a side note my uncle had birds in Colorado and they were spoiled. my uncle had a house built and his birds had their own cage built in that was the size of a bedroom and had lots of foliage and toys, it was beautiful. when I went to visit him and my family I was kept awake most nights by the birds talking...they would mainly call my uncles name all night and tell him that they were being good girls.
They don't know what the words mean, they can learn what to do when they hear them though. Just like a dog will never understand the definition of sit but will understand what they are supposed to do when the hear the sound "sit".
Well, the parrots like those, they have the minds of a three year old. So it does make sense they know some words, just the simple phrases. I saw a video where a macaw told a playful dog nipping to stop biting without a prompt. So they might know some.
Birds can imitate words without knowing what they mean, just like people sometimes do, but they can also learn what words mean. Look up Dr. Irene Pepperberg and her research with African Greys; you will be amazed!
paws27 But that's the same thing right? A dog sits when you tell him to because you taught him that when he was a puppy. Same as you were once taught the word sit in the same manner when you were a baby or toddler.
I do believe birds like parrots can be taught the same way certain things. Also they seem to be able to make connections with words and certain actions being taken .. for example: every morning when I leave for work I say "Bye" to my African Grey parrot. And every time he says "Bye" back to me. He's now even connected that word to me leaving the hallway. When I'm in the hallway and opening the door to leave my appartement, he already says "Bye" before I say it. He connected the word "bye" to me leaving... which in my opinion is basically what the definition is of "knowing what a word means"..
That's so funny! We had a budgie who talked non-stop, and he DEFINITELY knew what he was saying. We didn't teach him to talk but we talked to him, and then he'd put words together (sometimes in a very unorthodox pattern, granted), but he got his message across. Once he flew into the living room, looked around, and made the observation, "Nobody's at the computer!" He instinctively knew when I felt bad, and would come over, perch on my shoulder, and whisper, "Don't be sad" into my ear. I still miss him every day. (Now I have a a beautiful black Lab, who is just as intelligent, empathetic and compassionate, and I wish the two could have known each other. I think probably all animals are much smarter and more perceptive than humans give them credit for. It's not being anthropomorphic, it's treating them with love and respect.)

I taught my cockatiel to say "kissed ya on the feathers ( and he would give a sideways kiss) then say "kissed ya on the wings!" and kiss his girl cockatiel's beak. That just pissed her off, though. She's kind of persnickety.

A friend of mine had two cockatiels, two budgies, and some other birds, years ago. The male budgie somehow managed to use the phrases he knew pretty appropriately. For example, my friend called me one afternoon, laughing hysterically because the two cockatiels had been making out and the budgie had sidled up to them and said "Hi there! Whatcha doin'?" Also, whenever he wanted a little action himself, that same budgie would approach his mate (a lovely girl who I don't think ever talked) and say, "How about a little kiss?"

Oh how this touched my heart!!! Animals show humans the best of what we can be. I have two parakeets, small budgies. They cannot speaks like these can, but they really care for each other. Prune and feed each other; eat and sleep together. Bicker at times - just a little. But, this video is fantastic. I just love the kisses and thank you. I am sure that took some work to achieve. Congrats for your patient love for these birds and teaching them such lovely actions and words!!!

They're so human. They use speech with each other, not the sounds birds use. How fantastic 😊😊
