- This video is all about the reality of owning a Indian Ringneck Parrot VS what you see on social media. Recently I've had many people asking me if Ringneck parrots make good pets. I find this question difficult to answer at times because every bird is different. This video is not to discourage you from getting a ringneck parrot but rather to show you the reality that comes with owning one.
I highly recommend you do as much research on them and also ask different owners on parrot forums before ever impulse purchasing.

This video should be mandatory for anyone considering getting a parrot of any kind. Too many people get a parrot without realising the dedication, time and effort it takes to own, look after and tame such animals.

All the big parrot influencers should do a video like this! The suffering of parrots (and their unwitting owners with unrealistic expectations) is enormous when reality sets in. Parrots are a massive lifestyle commitment!
Never had one of these, but after my grandfather passed away I took in his umbrella cockatoo named Murphy.. that boy was loud as hell and not very friendly when we first got him, and was more work than having a dog, and I breed dogs lol definitely rewarding when you gain their trust though nothing like it but I truly believe birds shouldn’t be pets for most people
Absolutely. It's a tragedy how often they get abused, neglected, and abandoned because people went into it not realizing the reality of owning them, a lot of that thanks to the many people who only show the cute moments.
Even volunteering four days per week in a shelter with 24 parrots ranging from Greys to Macaws, where I was given much better expectations about what they are like, I was still caught off guard bringing a macaw home.
He essentially became our entire life, to make sure he was happy and healthy.
Our activities for the day revolved around what he needed and when.
Our meals even involved him; if we wanted to have a lazy pizza night or something else he couldn't have, we still had to figure out something to make for his dinner. He might've eaten better than we did.
We had to constantly follow him around to make sure he wasn't getting into things, and had to child lock anything potentially dangerous within his reach (but nearly EVERYTHING was in his reach, because he was an excellent climber).
We had to keep a consistent light and noise schedule to keep him out of "mating season" mode, because he became a sexually frustrated ball of stress otherwise. Set consistent bedtimes and mornings; there was no sleeping in, there was no late night excitement.
It was more like having a toddler than a pet.
All that, and after several years, it turned out he was infected with a virus that causes an incurable internal wasting disease. Likely when he was in his previous home, because he was extremely neglected and kept in filthy conditions.
It can stay dormant and undetected for years, and can only be detected in post-mortem pathology, but often never even activates. Experts still aren't sure what causes it to activate, but estimate as many as ¼ of captive and ⅕ of all wild birds have it.
Thousands of dollars in medical bills, even more energy put towards him to make sure he had his medicine three times per day, and he passed away anyway, about three years after the disease set in.
These are not pets, they're potentially lifelong companions which require a TON of special care. The cute moments these bird influencers usually show make it all worth it, but they're only the brief moments between all the hard work perfecting their care.
@@nickwhipert2725 I agree with your statement that birds shouldn't be pets for most people. Honestly, I don't think parrots should be pets at all. I am guardian to a 29 year old Umbrella Cockatoo. If I knew then what I now know, she wouldn't be in my home and I dearly love her.

As an owner of 2 Indian ringnecks, this video is very accurate 😂 they are beautiful, intelligent birds but not everything is as it seems on social media or the internet. With 2 of them, it’s quite hard to get a break from the screaming unless they both happen to be napping at the same time 😅 they’ve always got something to say for sure. But I love them and it is so rewarding to see the progress we’ve made in bonding

I really appreciate comments from other ringneck parrot owners as well, it helps to get other owners inputs for those thinking of purchasing one as a pet. It helps to put things into perspective on what it takes to own these beautiful parrots. They truly are a blessing, but with that comes daily care and commitment as you mentioned and you have double the trouble 🤣
Never owned a ringneck but growing up my parents had cockatiels and later moved into parrots. At one point we had an African Grey Parrot, Blue & Gold Macaw, Scarlet Macaw and a Green Wing. It was chaos.

Mine sqaukes so loud that if it is next to your ear you can’t hear anything in that ear for a solid minute and after that all you can hear is ringing 😂

Where I live, there are thousands of these birds, all flying wild and making lots of noise. It is wonderful to see them interacting with each other in the branches of our local trees.

Every morning and afternoon, 8 ringneck parrots arrive to eat in the garden.
I am slowly trying to gain their trust, so that I can sit by the open back door whilst they feed.

Apparently, 2 birds escaped their home around 5 years ago.
Now there are 8 beautifully healthy parrots, happily living together in the north of England. Amazing!!
They seemed very shy at first, around 3 months ago, when I first saw them happily sitting on the bird feeders!!!!!
A few of them are happy to stay with the door open, and eat while I talk to them gently, whenever I can.
Luckily my feeders are quite near the house.
I've even had 3 perched on my window ledge.
I just feel very blessed to see them every day. I know they will get used to me in time, like most of the other garden visitors. I'll keep you informed!!!! 💚

I had a rescued lutino Indian ringneck who came from a small constantly covered small round cage in a dark room where she stayed for years. She was mean to everyone else, but she was my mate :) huge cage, big windows 3rd floor apartment , fresh foods, shower and kitchen perch, always had her door open when we were home...I miss her terribly. I went to Bangladesh and was AMAZED to see all the wild green and yellow flocks flying free in the city! someday I will have another to spoil...I miss my loud friend!
Oh my goodness thank you for rescuing her and giving her a loving home. It’s so sad that anyone would keep any pet in such conditions.

Thank you so much. I always get so worried when people suddenly want a bird because of cute videos on social media, so I really felt the need to make this video.
Yeah, this all goes for ANY bird in the parrot family. From your littlest parrotlets and budgies to the largest macaws. The only differences are the larger they are, the more loud and destructive they are lol. BUT THEY CAN ALL BE JUST SO SWEET TOO! Owning a bird is not for everyone. In fact, it's a fit for very few people, so don't buy them just because you saw some cute videos on the internet. It could be very bad for both you and the birds.
They're not like dogs or cats, and being a good parrot owner requires an entirely different mindset. I wasn't prepared at first, but eventually came to truly understand them and how to interact with them. It's been very rewarding, and they are now my favorite of all the kinds of pets I've had, and I've had 'em all. You just have to have the patience to adapt to the completely different paradigm, but when you truly bond with a parrot, the affection you get in return is as strong as any dog's affection. They are extremely social flock animals by nature. However, if you don't develop a strong bond, it can be a very frustrating experience for both of you. It requires a LOT of time and effort.
One of the biggest things you need to know is that you can't just expect a parrot you buy to automatically talk, which is what most people seem to care about at first. Most WILL NOT EVER talk! For example, let's just talk budgies. I've had three. Only one of them has talked, and I have a feeling I got lucky. The odds are probably far lower than 1 in 3. I think the biggest factor here is getting them hand raised and very young. My talker was under two months old when I brought him home, and I spent many hours every day bonding with him and talking to him. But now it's hard to get him to shut up!
Oh, also... poop. Get used to poop. 😆
They poop everywhere, can't help it, and don't know any better. So deal with it and don't get angry if you want a bird. Budgie and cockatiel etc poop is really small and tidy, easy to clean no big deal, but some of the larger parrots.... cockatoos and macaws... it can be rather messy! Be prepared.
Thank you-everyone needs to see this before buying a bird. I learned the hard way years ago that I could not have one. I was very fortunate that I had a neighbor who owned birds and had just lost one and happily took in mine (a sweet Cockatiel that was given to me by a student who couldn't deal with them either). At the time I had no idea that I didn't even own a loud bird, but it was too much for me. I am a good kitty mommy-I am not a good bird mommy.

If you think cockatiel is loud you have no idea how loud is ringneck. I had one, I took great care of him, but couldn't deal with him, so I sold him 5 years after I bought him. I got myself a young cockatiel instead and it's miles from the ringneck I had. So much less noise and she so loving and friendly, all the time wants me to scratch her.

This is so helpful for the many parrots that are given up. The Social Network posters that edit to show only the cute scenes because they want views to get likes for $ are so detrimental.
I agree 100%. Although I post cute videos of my Ricco I also show what also comes with owning him. It’s sad how many are given up for adoption because of how difficult they can actually be to own. I wish more people would do research before impulse buying, but unfortunately this is not always the case.

I think the honesty definitely needs to be there. A month ago I had my heart set on getting a Ringneck, I was calling all around. One store said that they had several, so I hurried over. Thankfully, the shop owner was very knowledgeable. I am not a new bird owner, but I have not kept this species. She asked if social media had been influencing my insisting on a ringneck and I admitted that it was a large part of it, but not the whole reason. She explained a lot of the points you did and essentially steered me away. So, here I am with a Mustache Parakeet. 😂 He is already a little handful!
Many breeders or pet store owners are not so honest and are usually all about the money, but you do get the ones that really care about the well being of the pet. Congratulations on your new moustache parakeet, they are beautiful.
After five years, our IR is flying throughout the house. Amazing how accurate his flying is as he goes through small areas. Yep, he can be rather loud. He is free all day long, then we shut his cage in the evening. He loves IR videos, we show him on the tablet or cell phone, he will mimic many of the same words as he's watching, sometimes repeating at the same time as the video.
That point about the noise is on point! Even though my irn is a chill female, she still bursts my eardrums on the daily. Still love that stinky bugger though!
Haha the flock call or alarm call is the worst lol. Your ringneck parrot is lucky to have you, most can’t tolerate the noise after awhile.
This is why preffer and recommend cockatiels.
They do not destroy things they mostly sit on your shoulder or nearby you and chill. Sometimes they sing to you and are loud for no more than 30 minutes.
Unless you never trained them then that is on you.
We have wild ringnecks flying around here ... (they once escaped) they are very loud. But so nice to see them 😁

I agree with several prior comments and you are right to make this video. They are magical for the right person. Most people have no clue are not prepared and they are never something to buy for the kids because of a Disney movie. Think Nemo. If I ever win the lottery, first thing is I will make a bird sanctuary. We know they are too intelligent for average consumption as a poultry product. Thank you for pointing this out.

This is so interesting.
I was given a year old IRN and have had him for 10 months. I also have 3 Eclectus, a King Parrot, 2 Musk Lorikeets and a (super loud) canary and Alex the IR is the quietest of them all. Chatters and whistles a lot but seldom screeches. He has never bitten me, while my Eclectus regularly do. One of my Eclectus hens only gets out the cage, treated with great caution once a week because she is so vicious. Alex spends 4-8 hours a day outside his cage and has formed a sweet bond to my 6 month old Eclectus hen. They play together a lot. His only annoying habit is destroying every toy within a few weeks and chewing every bit of wood furniture in the room...but I still love him! He is very affectionate, likes to cuddle up to the side of my face while sitting on my shoulder but doesn't like to be stroked in return. I think he is the most intelligent of all my parrots, always incredibly inquisitive and full of joyous enthusiasm for new toys.
Aww he sounds so sweet and adorable. I do find that when they are bonded to another bird they are less vocal, but it seems as though he is bonded to you as well. My female rescue was very much like this but she was also 16 years old. I’d love to have a full house like yourself but considering my situation at the moment it wouldn’t work out, your birds are very lucky to have such a great loving home 🥰

Thank you! I knew what I was getting into which is why we haven’t gotten one yet, but I still learned a few new things here. I’m not new to birds, we had many I helped care for growing up over the years, but definitely to the Indian ring neck variety. I wish more people did their research on the kinds of birds and what they are really like! Your video is going to help a lot of people! 😊

It can be so common in pet ownership. High expectations can often lead to poor ownership, and even mistreatment. They need everything that we need. ❤️

Jade (my indian ring neck) is an absolute treat, yes she had good and bad days, and some time she is a daddy girl and some times she is a mommy girl, but she is 10000% love and i will never give her up

I like to show my friends and family their fun, but I also show the sour patch moments so that if anyone ever tries to buy a pet bird on a whim they fully know what they're up against. This is not only true for IRN's, but also my conure, lovebird and our budgie on a smaller scale.

I don't have the words to explain it, but birds definitely bring a whole lot of joy to our family- even when they have a moody or "horrormonal" day. Not sure what it is about them, but they have made some real sunshine on cloudy days for us! Thank you for posting videos of your babies and being informative out there in a world that can, at times, make people think that birds can be easy and adorable (definitely not easy, but they are adorable- but that trick they did in the video also came with toons of time, patience and training). Super accurate. I gotta say I was one of those ignorant ones before I got myself a Ringneck boy. Luckily I have had a very hormonal African Grey before so I was trained to what to expect. Even tho mine refuses to talk when I’m around and sometimes, willing to give kisses, he would bite here and there and gave me busted lips. Still love him and respect him. We are getting closer day by day but I would never “expect” him to get super cuddly. Just appreciating how he is happy to see me everyday and give me a high five and kisses when its meals time lol

As per my experience, IRNs make wonderful pets if properly handfed and socialised. In addition, owners need to interact with them regularly. My IRNs do not scream, they are best friends with a sun conure, Senegal, Red-Bellied Poicephalus, grey cockatiel etc. One of my male IRNs is closely bonded to a sun conure (the real screamer). These inter-species bondings have created a very harmonious atmosphere, and have reduced screaming in the conure too. IRNs are very cheeky birds and absolutely gorgeous!
That’s so wonderful. They definitely can make great pets but they are not for everyone. Unfortunately many people just look at the cute posts and think that every bird will be the same when this is not the case at all. Many are re homed for this very reason.
My Indian Ringnecks aren’t loud either. I interacted with them all day, took the time to play games with them and took them everywhere with me. They were tame and so loving. I agree with the mess 😀
Omg this is so true we’ve had Tia for 12 months. She was not hand reared and was 2 years old when we got her. Shes petrified of hands and will bite if you try to stroke her.
But little by little we are gaining her trust but its gonna take a long time.

I got my IRN when she was 3 months and now she is 1 and a half years old and is finally get used to hands and being around us
Mm. I thought of getting a ringneck but read that they're harder to keep than a greencheek. So I got a cuddly greencheek instead. Am very happy with my decision. She's my little cuddlebug. x)

I saw three different coloured ring necks talking, cuddling and playing with their owner, they are so incredibly beautiful, enchanting and appealing. I instantly fell in love. They are indeed gorgeous and l would love a few in my life - but no, they are not for me. I really couldn’t handle the mess, damage and noise. I’m in my 60s, and probably would have been OK with these things when l was younger and had more energy and patience. I’ll stick to being a Chihuahua owner, l know what l’m doing and can handle the down sides! Thank you for this invaluable advice, you’ve probably saved me a lot of regrets misery (and the parrots too) 🦜
Oh I think your talking about chatter box parrots, they are adorable. I really appreciate your honesty and the fact that you can admit that a ringneck parrot may not be a good fit. Unfortunately others do not and end up impulse purchasing after seeing cute videos on social media with these magnificent birds. It’s so sad to see how many are given up for adoption because of the reality of owning one and they did not prepare themselves for it. I don’t believe any research can fully prepare you with actually owning one, but I always recommend going on parrot forums to read up on other owners experience with them. I think with owning any pet has it’s ups and downs and can have challenges, but birds are definitely not for everyone. I’d love to have a dog, but unfortunately because of Ricco I don’t think I’ll have that opportunity. Perhaps one day.

I’ve had IRNs almost thirty years and some are more noisy than others. My one year old IRN is mostly very quiet. They are in my experience never always noisy. They also make very beautiful whistles and sing. You also do not speak of the wonderful loving quality they have. So glad for that every day. And their amusement with and sharing of life. Some people are less messy and less noisy but are less warm!
So sorry, perhaps you misunderstood the meaning of this video. I do have a video out on pros and cons that do speak of the good qualities as well, this video does show both but was mainly made for the other sides of what actually comes with owning a ringneck parrot or any bird for that matter. I have so many people who suddenly want a ringneck parrot without actually doing research and eventually get messages about the unknown and how difficult they are because they just went off of the cute posts on social media. I fell in love with the ringneck parrots from my female rescue and I’m hooked, but they have all been so different in personalities. I’m in Canada and if you go on kijiji or other sites you can see how many of the ringneck parrots are being re homed, it’s so heartbreaking 💔
Yep so true especially the noise and destruction. My bird has explored nearly all of my house and he still chooses to perch on places that seem uncomfortable and he makes a big mess but I love him and he is so cute Ricco is super cute too ❤❤

I can say this as we have many wild ringnecks in our town they shout and scream during early morning before going to local fields and also during evening after returning to their home.
I would love to have wild ringneck parrots. Do they ever come near you?
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn they occasionally visit our terrace to find some food, they are mostly found on nearby trees which is their home. Unfortunately we can't pet those wild birds as in India it is illegal to cage wild birds. So, most of us just feed them grains.
This is why a ton of research should be done before getting any pet, especially a bird of any kind!
I researched for 1yr before I decided the best fit for me and my situation was a Timneh grey, it took another year to find one from a good breeder as where I live they are not very popular, their cousin the Congo grey is more prevalent here because they are prettier.. they are also the one of the two more prone to behavioural issues that I didn’t want to deal with
This is pretty much true for any parrot species, though if you train them as babies there are some behaviors you can train them out of (or into). My eclectus is trained never to bite anyone for any reason, and he's fully potty trained with no accidents. He's trained only to eat in his cages so he doesn't make a mess outside of that, and we're lucky he's not destructive at all, he doesn't like to chew on anything other than his toys. He didn't like to be pet much at first but after a couple of years now he asks to be cuddled/snuggled and get head scratches at night. That said, it's probably best to just not get a parrot if you aren't going to be home at least 8+ hours a day with it to keep it from going insane (unless it's allowed to fly freely when alone). I would say it's worth it, but I had a lot of experience and time to train. Also I really love Ricco, he makes me want an IRN even though they're nuts.
Aww he sounds adorable 🥰. I’ve heard eclectus parrots are somewhat easier in comparison to ringneck parrots, I’ve never personally owned one but it’s what I’ve been told. I think they are absolutely beautiful. I find the Alexandrine parrots are also more gentle and calm compared to the Ringneck parrots. I suppose every bird is different just like us humans, it’s just sad to see how many people expect them to be cute, cuddly and talk from what they see on social media and unfortunately this is not always the case.
this is a late comment but thanks so much for making this video. for three years i've wanted an irn but i can't get one for many many more years. watching this video helped me cope because now i can tell myself "remember, they're not like how they are on social media" !

Ringneck parrots can make great pets, but definitely not for everyone. I always recommend to anyone thinking of getting a ringneck parrot or any kind of bird for that matter to go onto parrot forums or Facebook. There you will really see the true side from owners and their experiences with them. Ricco is not by any means perfect, he screams especially during hormonal season lol. But I’ve been pretty lucky with him considering what others are going through.
I have owned quite a few pets but I love bird. Parrots have a special place in my heart. They are deff hard work but I love them. I look forward to owning a ringneck soon! So excited.
Thank you so much for posting this! So many people buy birds on a whim not putting any research into what a handful they are and then end up selling them or worse not a month later. Birds need stable, loving homes.
Thank you for this positive feedback. It really is sad how quickly people are ready to give up on many pets, especially since Covid so many people purchased pets on a impulse and it’s the pets that pay the price when they are given away. Social media also doesn’t help because many accounts just show the cute side and not really what comes with owning a bird or any pet for that matter, so I really felt the need to make this video.
Great video. Anyone who is looking to get a bird should definitely watch this video. Is it an awesome, rewarding experience? Yes! Will bird ownership require a lot of work balanced with a consistent daily commitment to their enrichment and well being? Yes! I suggest volunteering at a bird rescue and/or helping out/bird sitting for someone before making the commitment to own a feathered friend. ❤🐦

I have a canary-wing and a green-cheek. That's the biggest poop and the most bite-pain I thought I could handle. I did train them out of bites.

Oh I hope I didn’t give the wrong impression. I just wanted others to see the real side that also comes along with owning a parrot. Some people just see one side and that’s the cute videos but don’t realize what it takes to own a bird. If you want other opinions about owning a parrot try going on parrot forums to see what others think. I’ve been pretty lucky with Ricco, but he’s not perfect. He does scream, especially now because of being hormonal and he does bite when excited. But I love him and that’s just part of owning a parrot 😊

Any bird, no matter the size or species are a lot of work. You have to earn a birds trust first and even then they will bite for seemingly no reason. They all have their own personality. I am working with 3 parrotlets and 2 are fine, the third I am going to rename "bitey".

I would have preferred to give a rescue a good home. I pick up my baby violet irn today. I am excited. I wish I had your email so I could learn from you on training Rocco. Dude my irn is probably the most open bird and loves people but he’s veryyy playful and is more independent and when it comes to oh he’s playing and you’re interfering with his play time or doing something he doesn’t like he will bite but they’re never really terrible bites just warning ones and I love this guy so much
We had a Goldies Lorikeet. Talk about a noise lover. Any loud noise, particularly the vacuum cleaner, set him off. Game on. LOL
Indian ring-necks are a bird in the ‘someday when I have my own house’ category lol But I do love them and would love to add one to my flock someday!

If you want a tame bird it’s best to get them as young as possible
I somewhat agree, but this is not always the case. I have many owners reaching out to me about their little ones not being easy to handle even as a baby and a hand fed bird. It really depends on the bird themselves. You can adopt a well tamed bird who is older, my rescue was a female rescue and was the sweetest girl ever.
September 12 2022 we purchased a pair of beautiful ring necks. It's their first day inside and they where very quiet..... observing our every move. Except when the female was napping....

2 become 3 we now have 1 female 2 males. We leave the cage open we are experimenting with different foods. Fruit vegetables and nuts.
One area where expectation meets reality is they are darned cute! 🥰
Having had pet birds as a teenager, the noise and pooping becomes routine. If you love your birds, you rarely notice those things. Maybe I got annoyed every once in a while when watching a movie and not hearing a crucial scene (they would hang out on a cabinet with a long mirror, talking to their reflections), but that’s as far as it went with me. I don’t recall cleaning poop being an issue; just moisten a paper towel every couple hours and clean all the spots I find in less than a minute.
It definitely just becomes part of a daily routine, but to others in may not seem that way and eventually becomes a burden.
Yeah I have a dog and cats, all are potty trained and never poop / pee in the house (except for the cats in their litter box). I don't think I could handle cleaning poop off all my surfaces and floors... I'll stick to my dog and cats 😅
@@giftofthewild6665 Haha I get it 😂. Birds can be potty trained but I don’t always recommend it, especially if it causes them to hold it in. Ricco has learned to let me know when he needs to go, but sometimes I miss the hints or he just goes lol 🤷♀️

I've got an alexandrine, pretty much just a slightly bigger version of a ringneck.
This rings so true. Only difference is that my bird doesn't bite me anymore and she's not as hyperactive as other birds. She likes to just sit there quietly and groom her feathers for hours. If I'm watching TV, she'll sit on my head and I'll stand up later with white hair and fluff falling off me.
She only really gets loud and chews things when I'm not there and she bites other people when I'm not next to her.

I have a ringneck, he is very quiet. I have many chew toys for him but he does not chew much. I had him for 4 years, he is a recuse. I don’t his past. I will not judge other ringneck with mine. He is just different. Still unable to touch him but I can get close without eye contact. Best bird ever.

I love mine. He talks up a storm, makes a mess, cuddles and bites like hell sometimes. He normally draws blood when he bites. It's OK. I'm used to it. He is a family pet and an around town visitor. He really enjoyed this video.

Just some news. Leeloo is now an indoor/outdoor free flying bird. She comes when called and has a three yard comfort zone. The territory is not hers but sbelongs to magpies and doves that have nested here for years so she stays close. We are all better and more relaxed now. She comes in on her own.

I think people don't understand how loud most parrots can be. I have a Green Cheek Conure which are considered a "quieter" species, and he is extremely loud when I'm not in the same room as him.
This is a great video. Always do your research. I learned that from buying my last dog just because I liked the way she looked but she was super yappy, had crazy energy and was so hard to train. I kept her until it was time for her to cross the rainbow bridge, I promised mine would be her forever home no matter what but I will always do my research before buying a new pet!! Some pets like parrots are not suited for certain people and it’s best to know beforehand ❤
She was lucky to have you, unfortunately many pets are surrendered because of this very reason. Pets are a huge commitment and it’s our responsibility to provide the best life for them. Sorry for your loss 😞
I wish they would make people take a class before they get a parrot. And also give them a manual of what they need and what can hurt them as well as causes of certain behaviors, hormones, nippy phases etc. thanks for making this. It was very good.

Congrats! Very well done and accurate video. A African Ringneck parrot owns me for over 31 years, and all you said is true. With a wild import this is even more so, compared to a hand fed baby.

Nailed it! There are a few things I would add in the video, for example, these are very needy birds, so you probably won't have much of a me time, since they will fly in your direction and land in your head or shoulders all the time. Also, you will probably going to need to wash your clothes far more constantly, because they eat a lot, and poop as much. One thing I can say for sure, these birds are more friendly to deal with than Rosellas.

Thank you so much for this. I could never have a parrot because of my own age, health, and space limitations, but i see what work is necessary for those who do. As a diligent feeder of lots of wild birds outdoors, i see some of this - mainly the mess. The birds poop everywhere. They will literally drink from a birdbath, then turn around and poop directly into the bath where they drank from. Some poops are nice white splotches but others are really messy. I also feed squirrels, and clean up all that poop every day so I won’t step in it and track it into my house. I clean my floor in the area around the back door, bathroom, and bird food area several times a day because i track in dirt and mulch, plus there is dust from bird food, and poop from live mealworms, that gets all over. But i love my babies.
Wildlife is just as much work. From keeping things clean and filling up bird feeders sure takes up a lot of time. I was a huge bird feeder myself but unfortunately we had to take it down due to the Avian influenza at the time. I do however provide drinking water, especially in the summer to stay hydrated and cool. It’s just such a great feeling to see them have a food source and water during the harsher times.
This is a VERY good video! Thanks for posting. Social media vids about ringnecks SO make me desire to have a ringneck, but you are 100% right. These videos are not the full story. I had a Kakariki a few years ago. I was a bit intimidated by a ringneck yet, so I got the more accessible and smaller Kakariki. Partly it was a big success. He talked a lot and he was a clown in many ways, making us laugh a lot. BUT!!! Kakariki males are incredibly hormonal. Every morning he woke up as an agressive monster and wouldn't allow me anywhere near his cage - which was impossible as I had to open the curtain his cage was close to. Also, every so many days he'd have a bad and moody day when he could not be approached at all. When in a bad mood his attacks were so vicious that he sometimes hurt himself trying to get to me through the cage. Most days after noon his better self won from his monster self and then I could feed him, have him on my hand and he'd be all lovy dovy on my shoulder, talking to me, giving me kisses, etc. When I worked, he was with me in my studio and he'd be out of his cage most of the time. He didn't wreck a lot at all, he'd mostly be looking at the birds in the garden, calling them. Kaks make the softest and most agreeable noise of all parrot-like birds, so that was cute and in between the calling noises he'd talk to me and come see what I was doing every now and then. If all went so well, then why is everything past tense you may wonder. Well, after about 1,5 to 2 years my kakariki decided to choose his mate. And it wasn't me. He chose my husband. Who was working at the office full time. Result? He wanted me out of his territory, which happened to be my home. When my husband walked in, he was all lovey dovey and cute and cosey. He could do ANYthing with that bird and when my husband was around, he completely ignored me. Visitors were no problem. He'd always sit with them and talk and be funny. But...if I tried to make contact with him he'd attack. And when I was alone with him during the day, he'd attack too. One day he decided that the entire package of bird food, the fruit, bird candy, sunflower seeds, etc. were all his and that I was not allowed to touch it. I could no longer feed hinm outside his cage as he'd attack me every time. I asked a bird trainer for advice and practised with him to get him to understand that it was me who was boss with regards to foods. Well, forget it. If a bird really decides you are not to be tolerated in his territory, then certainly not near his food. What started with attacks of my hands grew into bombing attacks on my head and lashing out to my face. Some days I bled in three to four different places. I had been told not to withdraw when he lashed out, so I didn't as it would make the bird feel victorious and lash out more as apparently it worked. But being bitten so often, that was undoable. I contacted the bird trainer again and he said it wasn't going to work. A parrot-like bird is not domesticated and once a bird is set against an individual there's basically little you can do about it. On his advice I set out on a quest for an owner he did love. Fortunately I found one and he has been living with her happily ever after, so it's good now, but in all honestly it was quite a traumatic experience for me. I'd had budgies before and the chemistry between myself and them had always been really great. I hadn't expected things could go this wrong. I worked so hard to make it work and still had to throw in the towel in the end. There's nothing I like watching more than ringneck vids, but your video has convinced me once again to not take the risk again. A kakariki biting your cheek is already painful and leads to scars. Imagine what it could be like with a bigger bird....
I’m so sorry you had to endure such an experience with your bird. But I give you so much credit for trying. I believe in the end you made the right decision for your bird and yourself. I’ve never had to experience anything like this to the degree you have. I’ve owned budgies as well and they are just wonderful, however ringneck parrots are much different. Don’t get me wrong they are great pets but they are definitely not for everyone and personality wise it really depends on the bird just like us humans. I’ve recently just had someone reach out to me about his birds two ringneck parrots and how different they are. One is so calm, relaxed and the other is almost to the extent of what you experienced, so it just goes to show you how different each bird can really be personality wise. Thank you for sharing your experience and I’m sorry you had to go through this, I hope one day you find a bird who is more suitable for you 😊❤️

They really are all so different as far as personalities and looks. I myself have never owned a Quaker or Cocktail, but I’ve heard great things about them. I’ve had both budgies and lovebirds who were adorable 🥰 . If you can go on parrot forums and read what others have said, or you can ask your questions about them actually owning one. I find it helps when you ask other owners, but again everyone will give you different opinions. With ringneck parrots I find most will say they love them or not lol.

Thank you, That was very informative. I love his colors. I imagine having a IRP is similar to having a Quaker Parrot. I had one for 24 years, before Social Media. It took awhile to learn everything about her. Sadly, I lost her a month ago, she was ill. The vet wasn’t sure what it was. I miss her every single day.
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s never easy especially after having her for 24 years. I’ve never had the pleasure of owning Quaker Parrots but from what I’ve been told they seem to be more suitable to many people who have had them to the ringneck parrots.

@@AtmxDawg24 Sometimes getting another bird helps to fill the void, although your new bird will never replace your Quaker it definitely helps. It really depends on you and when you are ready, don’t rush yourself. Take time to grieve, you will know when you are ready to open your heart to another bird. So sorry again for your loss 😢💔
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn Thanks and yes I agree with you. Another thing I have to take into consideration is that I’m going to be 60 in January. And should I get another bird, I will have to take precautions. To make sure all of my Pets are taking care of. Currently I have 2 dogs that are both 9 years old, and will be 10 in 2023. All of my Dogs have lived long lives from 15-18 years old; so I have to consider all of these factors before getting more pets down the road. Incase something should ever happen to me, at some point in my life; I want the pet or pets to be taken care of by good People. This is what I have always believed that a responsible Pet Owner should do for them. Sadly, a lot of People don’t consider this when getting a pet. And like dogs and birds tend to live a long time, and in some cases out live their owners. Or if a owner has to go into a nursing home. You just never know what can happen to you. And like protecting your Wife and Children, You must also protect your pet or pets too. 2 and a half years ago, My Stepfather passed away at the age of 84. He was married to my Mother for 43 years. Now my Mother is 84, and has a new dog that is a year and a half old. But she has already made steps to have her dog taken care of. Because you just never know when it can happen. And losing My Xena a month ago, also hammers that home that even more. My hope is People will read this, and hopefully make sure that they will take care of both their family members and their pets too.☺️

I always tell my family if something we’re to happen to me what would happen to Ricco, thankfully my sister would take him and if something were to happen to her I’ve arranged for this as well. Bro my ringneck wakes me up in 6:00 in the morning and bites me when I give him food and like poops all over the place. In his cage there is a lot of mess, I put his cage near the outside a table that we have and when I take him out I all ways notice food on the side of the table and on his cage💀💀💀💀💀

I don’t have Indian ring necks but I do have 2 conures and they are the same way I generally have to sing lullabies to get them to go to bed the bites can hurt they chew cords posters etc they talk and screech and sing and make messes and they don’t like to be touched
My experience with Alex, my ringneck, has been in the middle of expectation vs reality. He can certainly be loud, but in general he's not too bad, he doesn't often scream at his loudest. He does even talk here and there but its usually when he's excited, so its usually followed with some kind of mischief, which is annoying in the moment but honestly pretty funny in retrospect. He likes perching on a lamp he knows I don't like, probably to get my attention, even if I never give him any when he's up there. He's damn persistent though lol. Definitely spot on about the mess though, tons of cleaning to do, but I don't mind it, cleaning is cathartic for me to do. He's decently cuddly for a ringneck, he'll usually want some scritches once a day or so, and he'll let me know when he's interested. Otherwise he likes to perch on my shoulder and just chill, which to me I find as cuddly behavior

I give up on ringnecks, I bought 3 at 4 weeks old and finished the hand feeding. At first, all was fine. We spend every evening on my shoulder, getting rubs etc. Then the first one change in 2 days, from that to refusing to leave the cage, On 3rd day it bit and drew blood. I sold him the next day, the second bird did the same thing starting 2-3 days after that. Again friendly but changed over night. For the last 2-3 months, I only get the last one out, he waits at door to get on my shoulder, until 2 nights ago, now same thing, will fly to back of cage refusing to be touched. Not one of them had a stressed moment to become like this. I've had everything from tiels, patagonians, quackers and B & G, nothing like this before.
