Why I regret spending 9 years playing Destiny (and why it's too late to quit)

  • After all of the time I've put into Destiny, I can't help but feel like my investments haven't been respected. So I'm gonna let off some steam and say what's been on my mind for the past few years.
Of course I don't want to keep you from trying Destiny 2 out, but before you start making purchases, here's some ranting from somebody who's been there for it all.
    Corrections:
Power level is not set to change next season
Season prices should have been included in Deluxe Editions
I may have been too harsh on the story because I didn't really pay attention lol

    No Friends 00:39
    "New Content" 02:53
    $$$ 04:34

I just want to make it clear that my intention with this video was not to scare people away from trying Destiny 2. I just want to offer my frustrations that have built up over the years, because I don't want people falling in the same trap I did by having the wrong expectations. That being said, there was plenty that I should have said better in this video and a few things that I got completely wrong. For example the power level is not set to increase next season, and I forgot to remove the prices of seasons that were free with the Deluxe editions. And while I may not have addressed the issues that you think are the worst, I voiced my struggles with the game and you can take that for what it's worth.
If you are thinking about trying Destiny 2, by all means don't listen to some random guy on TH-cam, just give it a go and enjoy it. I just personally feel like my investment hasn't entirely been worth it.

Ok so first thing I'm gonna say Is that I'm a D1 year 1 vet and what that means in case you don't know is that I've been playing Destiny since the very first year of it's release but I'm thinking you really don't understand the game but as I've said before if you don't like the game don't play it but posting videos like this which is based solely on your personal opinion there's over a billion guardians world wide that love this game as much as I do I don't know maybe your a COD player but I will agree with you about one thing the Destiny community has gotten worse but not the game anyway the next time you feel like doing a public service like you think your doing about this do us all a favor and DONT!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. We have invested so much time into it that it's hard to let go.
    2. This game has so much potential we are kind of hoping they make it better.
I truly believe that under the right management this game can be A+ . Unfortunately bungie does not respect the player base. It's not that they are lazy It's that we are the product. They keep throwing subpar and recycled content at us and we still continue to throw our money at them.

I will ALWAYS love the lore and worldbuilding of Destinu. The Story showed how good it could actually be with Witch Queen but Lightfall did literally one thing important and answered no questions about anything.
Not to mention the fact there's nothing to actually grind builds/rolls for that's truly unique and the content drought at the second half of the Season is so frustrating. I don't want to do GMs to guild a Title every season, I want stuff to actually do.

I’m glad you talked about this. A lot of people in the community seem to just not care what Bungie does anymore. Last time I saw people push back against Bungie (besides all of Lightfall) was when the solstice event card was added. Now we’ve had 3 more since and no one seems to care. Bungie just recently made the seasons more expensive, yet people are still defending them and trying to act like their spokesperson.
I love the game, I really do, but when the DCV was announced I knew Destiny was taking a nosedive. The 30th anniversary and Witch queen DLC had me hoping for a better game, but Lightfall leaves me in the same position as Beyond Light. I just want the game to improve and to finally stop pulling its punches, but with a community that thinks saying “I just want the content I payed for” is controversial, I just don’t know at this point. Again, great work, you listed a lot of the community’s problems.

The bond brothers strike in d1. The three of us were struggling for hours to get through the boss arena. That alongside bad management is what is causing this game to always be potential. Light-fall was extremely rushed and only has that 33% positive review rating because the people who actually work on the game are extremely talented, they just have to put up with terrible management. Nothing will change until there is an actual good competitor, which still hasn't happened yet, or until people just start leaving if they go too low with the amount and quality of content.

I'm a new player. Just started playing in Feb 2023, after I saw a couple of friends stream playing the new expansion. I think I have around 200hrs in the game now.
I've never been a fps guy, but this game won me over. The grind to get to 1800 was pretty enjoyable, and you seem to always have new activities to try, new planets to visit, and new weapons and armor to collect.
That was the first month or so.
The last month I've struggled to get a measly 20 more light since I don't do any end game content.
I still have lots to do, I've only completed one campaign, I've only played one class and 2 subclasses. I can see myself sinking another few hundred hours in this game.
On my limited experience, I can commend the game on its visuals, music, mechanics, creative builds of the subclasses (thanks to the community), and overall power fantasy of your guardian. The game just feels satisfying and fun to play.
On the other end, your progress hits wall so hard when you get to a certain point, and grinding for a couple of light points becomes a chore. Most exotics are meh, and even when you get a good one it has the wrong stats. I understand that infinite progress is impossible, but there should be a way to still make the rewards satisfying.
Either way, kudos to you guardians that have been on the frontlines for almost a decade. Thank you to your dedication and your wallets.
I will see you in either the vanguards or the battlegrounds, with my non tripled hundred set of armor and my non meta weapons.
Thanks ahead of time for the countless revives I'm going to need per mission!

About using non-meta weapons, just play what feels fun! I hate metas, it forces players into a rigid role that isn't any fun and gets boring and stale fast. I've mained Warlock since D2 Beta, and since Well of Radiance came into the game people have almost always demanded a Well for Raids and Dungeons rather than just play for fun. Don't get bottlenecked into using certain abilities or weapons just because others say you have to. I recommend using weapons like Ruinous Effigy, Traveler's Chosen, Cerberus+1, or even Worldline Zero, or anything that just is fun to mess around with. Like explosions? Go with things that have Chain Reaction, Chill Clip, Reservoir Burst, Dragonfly and Firefly. Doesn't have to be a 5/5, 100% godroll. Wanna just kick back and slay without much thought? Rig up an overshield/damage resist/Devour build and find your favorite auto rifle, smg, or machine gun and just hold down that trigger. Lots of youtubers and streamers keep saying "Oh, get this godroll for PvP or PvE, it's amazing!" when they can't really tell you how the gun will feel in your hands. Go out, try out a bunch of weapons, find what models and perks feel the best to you so you have a personally tailored gun you wanna chase or craft. I still have an amazing Stryker's Sure-Hand sword that I forged back in the Black Armory days with a non-mainstream roll that felt amazing to me. Go out and do your own thing, just make sure you're enjoying yourself in the meantime. Games are supposed to be fun.

As a guardian who’s grinded to hell and back when it came to crafting god rolls, making my builds, and slogging through getting the right armor combo, it’s not always that important when starting.
Though, if you find yourself getting deeper into doing solo legend lost sectors, they aren’t too bad when it comes to getting exotics sometimes. And getting enchancent cores and prisms doesn’t hurt either. And nightfalls usually give pretty good weapons and materials for masterworking your armor. And masterworking your armor adds +2 to each of your stats which is always beneficial.
Though when masterworking exotics it can be more taxing on your materials.
Though if you can get buddies to do legend NF, then you’ll really start pulling in good mats.
Also doing trials can be fun if you’re not taking it too seriously. Even if you lose, you can still keep going and get engrams from Saint for decent gear and weapons too. Getting flawless isn’t everything, though it can be cool to get up to if it happens.
Of all my years playing D1 and D2 I’ve only went flawless once.

I quit right before Witch Queen after 1300 hours. Beyond Light's grind, seasonal model and monetization was just too much. It's too much effort to raid, and more specifically gear up to raid. Sure I missed out on Witch Queen's campaign, but what I didn't miss was even more recycled content, another year of no new Gambit or PvP maps, aggressive monetization, and Lightfall's terrible story. I also didn't have to regrind my Light subclasses for the fourth time since D1. I also didn't miss out on weapon crafting, which like every new system in D2 is overly grindy for the first season before it's "fixed".
After not playing for 15-16 months, I really don't miss it. I'm curious to see how the saga ends, but I don't need to play to learn that. That's what TH-cam is for.

Honestly on the topic of raid teams, you have to weed through a ton of people to find the ones you have some synergy with. Starts with GM Nightfalls and random raids, once you have a few people you can consider friends, finding the rest tends to be a bit easier.
Biggest recommendation is that you just have to be willing to not give up on one another when trying to learn or teach etc. Then if you commit and get through it, you all have to play it again at some point. You'll most likely cut your time from, 4 hours to 2 hours.

I was really shocked when i watched him complained about finding friends for raid/dungeon team lol. Im very new compared to most players here, I only stated in Season of Plunder (September?) last year. I've never had problems with what he said and I never realized how lucky I am. Me and 2 more friends started playing together, and we had a friend from previous games who invited us to join his clans full of people willing to help us in any activities and teach us just about anything. They never complained about our 1st time raid going on for like 2 hours (i think thats the longest we've took, learning VoD and TLW), and I guess the credit should be given to my friend who explains each encounters very very well and me and my friends picking things up quick too. Now most raid takes us more or less an hour.
And less than a year later I think I can safely consider me and my 2 friends being really proficient in this game now and the 3 of us still play new/unplayed dungeons and figure them out ourselves without checking anyhting and asking anyone, it's hella fun discovering how each encounter works. Almost 900 hours in myself and it's been very very fun throughout, PVP shotgun apes frustration aside. hahaha

And the longer you go the harder it is, but then one of my best friends I used to play wow with passed away, and wow was never the same again. It was the wake up call I needed, quit the game never looked back and I purposely stay away from games that are extreme time sinks. The longer you wait to quit the more time you spend on something you don't enjoy.

I agree with much of this. It always bugs me when anything pro-player is patched immediately but other things remain untouched.
The one thing I'll take issue with is the friends angle.
My 12 year old son watched me play, and wanted to try it.
He asked where I got certain weapons. I kid you not, he downloaded the Bungie app and is always on LFG. He has done master raid bosses. Trials. Oryx. Nezarec. THIS week he got Vex. He had the catalyst done the next day - from LFG. I know we all gripe and moan about that one time someone was mean in LFG. My kid is 12. A squeaker. But he's done more raiding than me and my older son combined. At this point he could be a raid sherpa probably. Just saying in about 2 months he's now completed every raid, every dungeon, (maybe not prophecy yet) and lfg is his playground. Did I mention he's 12? 😂

D1 vet here, I quit in late 22. My biggest issue was how the core activities were neglected/affected by time (and the changes that went with sub-class upgrades). Meanwhile the laundry list of stuff you had to do (often in the core activities) just got longer and longer....all of it boring, and often frustrating. (and you're right...my list of boring stuff won't really match my friends' lists of boring stuff, so that's another nail in the coffin.)
D1 PvP was a million times more fun than D2's 2.0 ability spam, heavy-is-always-on-the-map, everyone is running a shield type bs.
D2 strikes are a joke because everything falls over as soon as someone looks at it with an ability. Good luck getting *those weapon kill bounties* done?!
And the upshot is these changes (ie. the 2.0 changes) have been made to entice newer, more transient players in, and keep them on the amazement-hamster wheel. Don't let stuff stay the same for too long, or they might leave!! So the seasonal mode resetting keeps people walking around a maze essentially....one they never leave.
Meanwhile....a new strike please? Oh no, but here's another seasonal horde mode pretty much exactly like the last one, and the one before that. Bungie's ultimate goal is to keep you online longer, so there's more chance you'll put some real money down on microtransactions for some cosmetics. Which will almost certainly leave you with silver left over...and you wouldn't want to waste that now would you?? So you better buy some more, with more real money!!
Everything said in the video about the team-related stuff (3-6 hours in a raid IF you can get people who ALSO know what they're doing, AND THEN a random chance of NOT getting what you want), is 1000% true. *AND THANK-GOD* someone said what raids truly are: confusing communication puzzles. The balancing a piano on your finger metaphor is *SO* on point!
Why are they designed like that? Because you can teach people (like rats) to follow a pattern. But you *can't* teach people to move and shoot better...that's up to individuals to improve if they want to.
So to make a raid difficult enough to be a challenge Bungie had a choice...make the combat so hard that some players just wouldn't get thru the raid (ever), or make it a kind-of aliens-in-space square dance, one in which you have to first learn the arbitrary moves, in order to have a semi-decent chance of success.
Of course, they could have come up with more flexible, varied roles for team members, and/or encounters with more unpredictability. So there would be something for each type of player, and it wouldn't get boring or repetitive.
BUT THAT would take money and time....two things Bungie is increasingly reluctant to spend on Destiny. Such a shame...the mystic space exploration with combat vibe of D1 was amazing, and had as much or more potential than any game I've ever played.

I tried the math and the average play time was only 4-5 hour a WEEK. I think you need at least double that to actually get something out of the game to not regret it. The more you put in the more you get out. Im a seasoned player that started in taken king and i dont know how many hours i have in d1 but i have easily over 3000 hours in d2 alone, but probably half that in d1. There is some valid criticism here that im not trying to devalue but on terms of regret its because it seems that the creator has been playing very casually this entire time. Being a casual is fine but if you dont get past surface level it sounds disingenuous to say youve played for 9 years. Thats where the regret comes from. I dont recommend anyone stick around that long if you can on average only play an hour a day you need at least 10 hours or more a week to get most of what this game has to offer.

I think the only problem I have with how raiding is now versus in D1 is that you have tokens instead of just reviving teammates in normal. Instead of making a awesome three man kill against the boss with three or two teammates down, you basically gotta play it safe ALL the time.

Like some require joining alies, well/shatter skating, and straight up breaking an encounter by other means in order to complete. But I have done some low man stuff that is feasible for higher skilled player and I'll agree that it is a blast and a rush to do. I'm just not resorting to cheering things in order to get it done.

I've also been a 9 years Destiny veteran, and I resonate with a lot of this video. There are always two sentences I use to describe Destiny to people that ask me if they should play it. 1) "Destiny is like a 5 star meal served on a paper plate" and 2) "Destiny is the equivalent of an abusive relationship". I was lucky enough to get in early and it took me from D1 base-Season of Opulence to make a single friend to play Destiny with and I didn't even meet them through Destiny, I met them through VRChat. I want to stop playing with the amount of frustration this game gives my on a near daily basis, but I'm way too deep at this point and I have to keep going in order to justify all the time I've put in. But another problem is that Bungie has no competition for Destiny, every game that tries to dethrone Destiny fails and I feel trapped with only Destiny to scratch that Destiny itch

Destiny is essentially an anime with thousands of episodes only the seasoned veterans know and are able to create a sense of nostalgia out of while the newcomers get put on to these certain so called super awesome episodes at first that make the rest of it look pretty boring so they just never get into it. They aren’t able to create that same sense of nostalgia because they were never really able to enjoy the origins since they either got lost in the archives or just downplayed by other events of the tale.

    • @jadendevine598
      @jadendevine598 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just like the new Ghosts of the deep dungeon. There’s SO MUCH to have nostalgia and appreciate about it but the newcomers who didn’t notice the tank at the beginning, don’t understand why oryx’s body is laying on the seabed of titan, or the whole lore behind the dungeon in general, just see a decently beautiful space to find new mechanics to master and that’s about it. Especially with how easy and short the dungeon is, it just doesn’t make newcomers or at least people who have recently delved into the game within the last two expansions, feel good about what they’re playing or caring to do it again and find more. And if they do find reason to do it again it’s gonna be for the title and seal or simply just extra loot and something to do.

    1) the best ways to make friends in d2 has always been through raiding and dungeons. There will always be assholes, but I've met so many people in those groups that I still play with. You just gotta be open to it.
2)Content recycling isn't a surprise in any game. It's literally a pillar in game development to make games actually feasible to build in a reasonable amount of time. If anything, we've gotten substantially less reskinned content compared to past years of destiny.
    3) Why is this a surprise? when a game is around for a long time and they run off of a dlc model, the total price will add up over time. you'd be paying $700 for 2 games, 12 expansions, and 13 seasons. You'd get substantially higher numbers in games like WoW anyway.
    4) This whole narrative of "bungie greedy assholes" is getting old as hell. first of all, they're a company, with investors. Second of all, they've used the sony money in particular to double their work force and expand into a larger studio. And finally, they're also making the new marathon, a new destiny spinoff game, a destiny mobile game, and they're expanding destiny into more comic books, books, shows, and movies. That stuff (ESPECIALLY the expansion into cinema) takes more money than they'll ever have at one point in time. So yes, more stuff is getting slowly monetized, but also, its going to an incredible amount of expensive projects and to the expansion of bungie.
    5) Yeah that's spot on. The only campaign that had a good story is witch queen, and while the ideas were actually fantastic the execution could've been better. That's 100% on them and my honest guess is that they dont have time to fully incubate a good story before they have to start building enviroments for the dlc, which means a lot of it will seem basic or underdeveloped. They'd probably need a decent reworking of their dlc workflow to actually do something decent, which is something they've somewhat done with the 2 year production of the next expansion.
    6) Power leveling is no longer increasing as of this season due to this, and will be getting a complete rework next season
7)very valid with the new player vs veteran. We all wish the new player experience wasn't as tedious and boring as it was, and bungie has said that while guiding players through the systems of destiny has been their goal with guardian ranks, actual gameplay/story focused changes will be their focused in lightfall. Certainly very late, but I'm at least glad its happening.
All in all I'm not here to shit on your point of view, because it is completely legitimate and valid. I'm just you my point of view, as someone who's also played for nine years but had a lovely time doing so. It was honestly all in just finding what I love in the game and making the most of it, because no other game could provide the lore, musical, and visual experience that destiny does for me. I'm not high level at all or anything, and I've never done a grandmaster, but I found and stuck to the parts of the game that I actually love, and have genuinely been enjoying the shit out of this game for so long. If your plan is to give up on destiny, I wish you the best on whatever gaming venture you take up next.

I started D2 on Dec 2019, Season of Undying. Back then I was literally having fun, starting as a new light with little to no experience on what is Destiny. Every content is exciting and thrilling, going in with 2 of my buddies, we overcame all of the obstacles. Despite of having no gears, low level, stuck in an exotic quest for hours, getting wrecked in a nightfall and those painful grinds on pinnacles, we were still enjoying every inch of D2 and looking forward for the next chapter. Fast forward to this day, I couldn't say I have the same excitement when playing D2 anymore. Everything fell like a chore, I'm no longer the new light 4 years ago, I got my loots and godrolls after all these years of grinding but at what cost? Destiny 2 now is never the same as the Destiny 2 I used to enjoy, my buddy left the game a season ago, everything in the game just feels.... empty...

At least for me, I started playing around 2.5 years ago (just after beyond light), with 2 other friends playing with me. They both stopped playing around a month or two later, but I kept going, got close with LFGs, Clanmates etc. I now would say I have made 50+ friends, not all play consistently anymore, but at any time there are probably 20-30 who are online daily. Maybe it is because I play a lot more than you (5500 hours in 2.5 years), and spend a lot of it raiding on lfg (1.5k hours spent in raids), but either way I'd say destiny is the game which I have made the most friends from by a LONG shot.

I’m a newer player (started ~season 15), but I’ve quickly racked up a ton of hours. The best part of the game is PvP (no bias here lol). I think the core of this game is the loot grind, and acting the like the reskinned guns or new content that’s still just the same format is terrible is a bit extreme, though it definitely wears you down (the seasonal model got tiresome quickly, though the weekly story missions are generally pretty interesting). I have made friends playing, through PvP. I’d agree that raids are where friendships go to die, but a dungeon or gm is great with friends. I think the worst part of the game is the new player experience, but I’ve been happy with what bungie has had to offer (except their lack of crucible updates 😔). Nice video

Now not everyone wants to do end game content, only two of them do, which is perfect for GMs, raids we do have to LFG for, surprisingly the guardian ranks system has actually given us the shared goal of all getting to rank 11 rather than making it a race. Then I’ve got my casual friends who don’t want to leave the strike playlist, custom matches, and random talking in patrol zones (three of my friends). The rest of my friends are dungeon junkies, working on getting into endgame content by spamming the heck out of dungeons.

"Destiny 2 isn't a good friend making environment."
Hard disagree (also just in my opnion!). I was able to find several friend groups over just two years of playing the game solely from doing LFG raids. Usually I find that the best LFG's for making friends are those that invite you to their actual server (since you can stick around and see how they are) along with groups where you guys are trying to do something for a long time, like a legit Riven, because that gives you something to bond over. Don't get me wrong, a lot of LFG groups are absolutely horrendous, but you only need a couple to stand out to make long lasting connections.
Great video, the "potential" section is really accurate. One thing I notice is that every year there's some new supposed "Destiny killer" just because no other game can capture Destiny's audience, just like how companies were searching for the elusive "Halo killer" until Call of Duty 4 came out to actually fill that role.

I've made dozens of good friends, a lot of whom I've hung out with in real life and who will be friends long after Destiny is gone. Just an observation, but after crossplay was implemented, I noticed that PC players who came around to join up for activities or to try and join our clan usually spent all their time playing alone, whereas the PS and Xbox players would hang out and help each other with activities even if it's something they didnt need to do. I don't know why. You are right that Destiny is best played with friends, but I haven't experienced that being an issue at all.

I became friend of one of the clan members and added the other ones, we would never play again, until i see one of them playing raid with randoms (I didn't know at the time), so i asked if i could play with them in the moment someone left, and was very fun, one of them was already familiar with raids kinda and was organizing everyone, and was in the pandemic so not really anyone there was working. We spent 3 days trying to do Garden of Salvation, and we in the end filtered the players because just some of them stayed and where pasionate to gain divinity, and after 3 days plating together, and we spent more time doing Deep Stone Crypt (We did Garden for Divinity to do DSC). All this time together maked us really close because and we were friends to this day. Unfortunaly the game was just to expensive, especialy where i live (Each DLC cost's 120 bucks in the base version) and after leaving gamepass we stoped playing, but this time with Destiny was fenomenal and i never forget'it
