More business would do well to operate like this.
When people hire me to do woodwork, I take the approach, they hired me because I am the one who knows what he's doing on THIS job, so it's my job to HELP them, just as I would expect the same from a doctor, attorney or other contractor.
Being arrogant is the stuff of asses and idiots, regardless which side of the counter you're on. My customers could make me look stupid if I hired them in their line of work, if they chose to, but they may not get to do it even once. Definitely not twice.

Great advice for both sides of the counter! There are gun stores I won't go back to just because they come off like "commandos" that treat everyone like they're stupid. I have been an avid hunter all my life, I have taught all 3 of my sons to shoot, and have even taught aspiring police officers how to shoot (in an unofficial capacity). When I go into a gun store and they ask me if I REALLY want to see THAT gun, of try to talk down to me as if I just fell off a truck of green wood, I turn and walk!

Once i had a question about my makarov not feeding reliably. The gun shop employee that sold it to me asked me if I could bring it in to help me diagnose the problem. I told him im concealed carrying right now with a round in the chamber. He said cool pull it out and clear it. I did he inspected it double checked it and fixed the problem on the spot. Every safety nazi in the world is against that but for me that was the best customer service ever showing that we have a trust and respect for.each other. Been going there ever since. I've found that gun shop employees tend to be either friends or family of the owners, or in the case of big stores, just some random schmucks who only work there for the discount.
Cause in point: I was at an Academy Sports store and stopped to look at the gun case. There was a young couple there looking at handguns in the display, and I easily guessed that they were new to the gun world. The employees were two old guys who were completely ignoring the dozen or so customers at the counter while they chatted with each other. I told the couple of a local shop with good service where they could also get training, and they left. The employees never noticed.

A few of your videos have popped up lately and I watched them and I picked some great tips. One was shotgun handling. Thanks. However, I was a little critical of a gun guy with a backward hat on. My mistake, and I realized it when I got to this vid, the 4th or 5th one of yours that I have watched. Here I got to see that your real skills are not guns, but people. 180 degree turn around in our relationship. I practice and preach ever word you say. It is so easy to handle people with respect and to make them feel comfortable yet it is rarely done. Too many people are arrogant, too cool, and just basic jerks. You nailed down the basic requirements needed to build a long term customer relationship built on respect and trust and teaching a novice the basic skills they will need to be successful, knowledgeable, and happy with their hobby. You can apply everything you said too and business, car sales, real estate, or widgets. I would definitely head to your shop with my business. All the best to you and thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Great video! Your story about clearing a weapon, reminded me of a great little pawn/gun shop where I bought my first rifle. As I was making my purchase, I happened to glance up at the ceiling. The was a large hole in the old plaster. I asked the owner, "what's up with that hole?" He chuckled and said " a fellow came in with a 12 gauge shotgun to sell. I asked him if the gun was loaded. He said, 'nope' and pulled the trigger. That hole was the result. I never fixed the hole, just to remind everyone to check their weapon." That story has always stuck with me.

I could not agree more wit hthe trust point you brought up. When i bought my first gun, i brought in my dad. 30 years as a US Army Ranger, and he was telling me about different guns. The store clerk kept coming over, trying to correct points and butt in. I trust a shop clerk, but i'm not buying my gun for speed shooting or to go shooting every weekend for fun. It's for home defense, i shoot it twice a month to keep in practice, and to spend time with my dad, but i did not need all the extra. We left, and went to another store. He lost a customer, because he could not just let us look and talk about what i wanted my gun to be for.

Recently I bought my first gun. I did a research online, narrowed selection on two guns I want. Went to the local gun shop that actually has one of the guns I wanted (Canik) no matter they are much less known than the store from across the street. I'm naturalized American, I have an accent. Sales person was not helpful at all, he was replying questions in a disrespectful way, maybe because of my not familiarity with the guns or maybe even because of my accent. There was no eye contact, I ask the question and he is looking in another direction or doing something else. He was looking down on me. I thanked and walked across the street. They don't sell the brand I wanted but they offered the great customer service. I decided to transfer the gun I wanted to them if I get the gun online. I did that and customer service was even better then. They even offered CCW courses, range services etc etc because I said that it is my first gun. I'll definitely go there again.

    Outstanding video.
I’m a retired US Army Veteran who use to teach marksmanship among other things. CALM is the operative word in most situations...well unless a potential customer turns his/her back on you with a firearm...that could be tragic.
Anyway, I have had good and bad experiences in local as well as big box gun shops, mostly bad. What I truly dislike are the people behind the counter who talk down to others who possibly know more about weapons than they do, or tell you what you’re buying is less than adequate or is a cheap gun.
Example....was buying a Rock Island 1911 GI .45. The guy says well if that’s all you can afford I’ll sell it to you...WOW. Little did he know that I had a Kimber Ultra on my belt that I carried every day.
I had researched, reviewed the Rock Island and wanted to see for myself how well they performed. I walked out as the guy was more or less heckling me about not being so cheap.
I purchased the Rock Island and had it sent to my FFL, love it.
Anyway, kudos on your video....wish you had a shop in the state of Mississippi, I’d definitely be a return customer.
This should be a mandatory training video for all employees and proprietors of gun shops.

I’ve had a worker who I’m not even talking to walk up and say, “why are you looking at that? My gun shop stories, a guy from Austria (Europe, World Wars not Cangaroos), quite long though
I was offered a beer, while checking if I want to purchase (had to wait 3 days cooldown anyway) my first firearm. The guy talked the me, showed me around, handed me stuff, I could talk to him to check if I understood laws right etc. Was there for 2 hours with only spending like 20mins on my rifle
Visit leading to my second purchase:
I entered out of curiosity as it is quite famous in Vienna. Young employee, early 20s like me, showed me the way to their historic ones. Talked to him for about 1 hour about the rifles there (he even told me about too high pricing on models from importers) and then said "Come, I think you will like this then"... He showed me a pistol, the one I wanted for my collection but never named in our discussion. He reserved it for me instantly.
And my favourite shop so far: After realising I am a enthusiast about historic weapons the owner handed me a few of his own collectors items, told me stuff and so on. Later he even showed me his most precious rifle: A Kar98k, made in Steyr factory (Austrian factory), stamped 04/1945, using magazine parts from older scrapped kar98 rifles, quality check stamps but not ready in time for the military. The factory worker took it home some time where the, found it after his death.

Thankfully there are several gun stores in my area (southwest Ohio) and, like anywhere, some are better than others. But there is one I really like going to because the guy is really down to earth and will take the time to go over the finer points of the gun with you. My wife and I had just taken our CCW class and were looking for carry guns. I decided I wanted a compact 1911 style gun in 9mm and that's what I told the guy when I went in. He took me to a gun that was maybe a little more than I wanted to spend (when I walked in the door, anyway) but I decided to at least look at it. Glad I did. It was a Kimber Micro 9 2019 Shot Show special with Hogue wraparound grips and two 7-round magazines and an IWB holster. It was a little scary because I ended up spending about $600 but I ended up with a pretty good gun. I've bought a few guns from him over the years and he knows how to deal with customers. He'll cut up with you but will also go over details when necessary. More gun stores should be like his. There's another store near here that acts like they're doing you a favor by letting you walk in the door. I rarely shop there.

This is very timely. I’m a former Deputy for LA County who did use force back in the 90’s to save my life, but once separated from service due to a melanoma surgery I only had a shotgun and revolver for personal home protection. Recently decided to pick up a pistol, and unfortunately was handled by this kid who couldn’t have been more than 21. They were busy, but he started off the conversation with “I’m off in a few minutes, so do you know what you want”. I told him what i was interested in, price, and brand. He badgered me and patronized me when i expressed any interest in pistols under $1000, and then rushed me to such an extent that I just said “forget it”. Before that revelation, I intended to save $25 On the basic firearms test and presented my POST certificate; and the kid yells out that “we don’t accept copies of POST certs” in an authoritative manner. To top it off, I overhear him joking with another young guy about how they need to tell customers they are out of stock for the cheaper pistols in an effort to sell guns at ridiculous prices since guns are scarce during the government flu. S&W .38 for $980? Semi-auto .22 for $700? I understand the shortage and the panic buying, but I’ll never go back to any of their locations for hiring extremely immature and disrespectful employees. Not only that, but they request more documentation than the ATF requires, which is an insult to anyone that honors the 2nd amendment as sacred. They were making people buy a $50 fishing license to verify addresses instead of accepting utility bills that were opened. Does that make sense to anyone? I Have no problem with the demand creating a sellers market; but claiming items are out of stock to squeeze customers is BS. Rushing people in the process of buying a firearm that may be their future source for defending themselves, and result in either living or dying is unacceptable. I work at a major studio now and I have dozens of neo-liberals quietly asking me where they can get personal home protection firearms since most shops are completely out of stock, and that place lost about 30 referrals from me. I never blame the moron that provides terrible customer service, I blame the guy that hired him. (Management). Respect how you handle your business. Although you’re young, you’re wise and understand Respect. Keep up the good work!

Yes the Illinois slave behavior of you can't even look or touch a gun unless you've paid your TAX to the state first. You can't look at a gun without a foid card but you can shoot one in a Illinois range as long a you are with someone that has one in their lane. I'm not even sure if there's anything in the Illinois "law" to even back up that practice that the shops do of claiming you can't see a gun unless you've already got a foid. Funny thing is I can go in with my Wisconsin ID and touch any gun and buy all the ammo I want but the Illinois resident can't unless he pays a TAX first. It's not that the foid even streamlines the process either you still gotta wait for a background check and everything. It's simply a tax. This is why I think a lot of Illinois gun owners have a sort of "elitist" attitude too because they have permission slips. I grew up in Illinois and now live just over the line in Wisconsin. I've seen it all first hand.

The first gun I ever bought was in a shop with a range out back. I picked up my gun (a Ruger GP-100 6") and purchased some ammo (.357 or 38spl). The seller behind the counter asked if I would like to rent some range time and take it for a spin. I was like, sure, but he could tell that I had never even fired a gun and had some trepidation. So, he actually accompanied me to the range and talked me through my first experience! I'll never forget that man, and every time I returned to that shop and range, I brought him some fresh coffee or pastries.

I have one local gun shop that opened last January. Very nice lady runs it. We have had lots of transactions and I enjoy her. before that I was going to gander outdoors for the exact reason you mentioned. every time I went in one of these other small gunshops there is four assholes on me asking me things like how much you going to spend you got enough ammo? One guy would pick the guns up at random present them and dry fire them and then put them back all tactical like. He drove me out of the shop more than once. Then I walk into another gun shop and he started working there. So if I don't go to my lady at Black dog guns and ammo then I go to gander outdoors. gander outdoors sucks because they act like they've never filled out the paperwork before and it takes an hour to buy a gun. Go to a gun show and see how many times you get swiped

I can't say I can ever recall having a really terribly gun shop experience, but I've been going in them since I was a young boy, my father is also a firearms enthusiast. He taught me about gun safety and handling in the presence of others. I have gone into a shop to look before I had purchased my first handgun and I asked the salesman/owner (knew him since I was a kid coming in with my dad to look at long guns) "what do I have to do to buy a pistol? I've never had one before and I kinda want to buy this" now I admit not a complicated legal question for someone in the industry, but if he had responded with something akin to "look it up" you're right I probably wouldn't have ever gone back to that store, but instead he told me exactly what I had to do and I thanked him for his time and when I got the permit required by my state I came back and bought my first handgun from his shop. Really simple customer service, had I had a more complicated question and he looked it up for me same thing there's no reason to be an ass about a customer question. Likewise I'm a salesman myself and customers as a whole seem to respond pretty well if you don't know something about a product that they have a question about, but looking it up and answering them vs making them look it up makes a huge difference as to whether or not they'll come to you again

If someone hands you a firearm to clear in a store and a round comes out, no big deal. That's why the employee clears it before going any further. But if you pull out a loaded firearm and sweep the employee or another customer proclaiming it to be unloaded.. no, I can't agree with that. I don't care if it hurts your feelings, what you just did was outrageously ignorant and dangerous. And there's a range attached to our store here, I've seen plenty of ND's from "empty" firearms. Had one who went to put his "empty" gun into his range bag and shot through his bag and into the table.

This was 2012 or 2013 when the AR pistol first started becoming more widely known when the shoulder thing that goes up meme was born and all the idiots were writing the ATF for their opinions on them when opinion doesn't mean law.
Now they can't keep them on the shelves. Every SWAT and SRT guy I know that has heard of them either wants one or has gotten one, not to mention the legal benefits of carrying a pistol over a rifle in my state. I didn't bother telling them I shot competition and got paid to go to various manufacturers to demo stuff, that we had a collaboration with a high end AR manufacturer, a high end pistol manufacturer and a few accessory manufacturers for a foreign government contract.

I agree. I had that experience at a Cabela's a couple of years ago. I went there looking for an XD-S and the guy was really trying really hard to sell me on a shield. They had a sale of the performance shield with the fiber optic front and back sights and the ported barrel and all that. I asked the guy what I was getting with it over the base shield because I had experience with the base shield. He was like a ported barrel and fiber optic sights and a better trigger. I informed the guy that I don't care about ported barrels and then he switched to how much better the trigger is then the base shield. When I compared them I did not feel any difference. I was buying the XD-S because I wanted to try something different. I have not dislike for the shield. It is just that I don't do as well with it and I wanted to try something else. And then when I finally convinced the guy that I was getting an XD-S period he was like ok fine and then he reluctantly got me an XD-S from the back. That was the only time I have ever gotten a firearm from a major retailer and probably the last.

Just bought my first firearm. A Ruger 10/22 carbine. I did the research and walked in knowing exactly what I wanted. I could even point it out since I could see it on the shelf. When I asked for the Ruger 10/22 carbine, he looked at me like I was stupid and asked if I wanted the Ruger carbine (and he pointed to a different caliber gun) or the Ruger 10/22 (and he pointed to the Ruger takedown). I said I want the Ruger 10/22, but I don't want the takedown, I want the carbine. The other clerk said there was a different Ruger 10/22 behind some other guns which might be what I want. The dude went to it and pulled it (the carbine) out and said do you want this? I said yes that's the one. He then "educated me" that this was not the carbine, but just known as the Ruger 10/22. I said "well, doing my research I've seen it always referred to as the carbine model, but either way it's my first time buying and it's the model I want". I get home, pull out the manual to read and sure enough Ruger has it listed as a carbine. My dad checks it out and his first comment was "hey it's a carbine model!". I wanted so bad to go back and show that clerk my manual. But instead I'll likely shop elsewhere.

PPCS (Piss-Poor Customer Service) is a HOT BUTTON for me, as I've spent the majority of my life in Sales and/or Marketing, which necessitates polished CS skills. As a potential "buyer" I've had some good experiences and some really, really, BAD experiences, including bad experiences at Gun Stores, where the person behind the counter AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED that they were smarter and more experienced than the person they were speaking with, and even worse, I've witnessed their condescending attitudes towards novices and "newbies". (I'm pushing 70, bought my first every firearm (a Ruger 10/22) when I was in High School via the proceeds from my Paper Route, with guns having been my hobby since I was 10, yet to this day I still feel as if I've only "Touched the Tip of the Iceberg", re all there is to know about them).
One of my "classic" bad experiences was decades ago when I was looking at purchasing a compact micro-cassette recorder (I did say it was years ago! (-: (-: ) for use in college-classroom lectures. I was considering 2 different models, one priced at $30, and the other at $50. I would have gladly paid the additional $20, provided the higher priced model had features that would be of benefit to me. I thus proceeded to ask the Order Taker (note: this individual was an "Order Taker" and did not warrant the "rank" of "Sales Professional" !!) what the differences were between the two models. Without skipping a beat, "Mr. Helpful" said, "Well, one is $30, and the other is $50!" AAAARRRRGH!! (Walked out without giving them a dime, though I wanted to knock "Mr. Informative" upside the head with some "Common Sales & Service Sense" but felt it would have been an exercise in futility, as he seemed to be quite content in his apathy and ignorance.
On the POSITIVE SIDE, I had a Guitar Teacher many years ago, who always made me feel as if I was only a few lessons away from "Being on Par with Him"! - - Note that this guy had a Degree in Guitar, played with our local symphony, and had won a State Flat-Picking Championship, yet was humble (and WISE!) enough that he was always looking to Train, Educate, Elevate and ENCOURAGE his students, and NOT be an egotistical moron, via letting you know how "dumb" you were, and how "talented and great" he was!!

One day I hope I can get a job at a gun shop the closest I ever got was working at a pawn shop selling guns there. and yeah you have some really fucking stupid people that come through the door who have no idea what the fuck they're doing but you shouldn't be an asshole to em just because they're ignorant. I was an @$$ one day as I left a scathing review about the shop. They treated me like a peasant because I was only spending $200 on ammunition. I'm guessing the commission wasn't as good in $200 worth of ammo vs the line of people wanting to by rifles $600 and up.
Anyway, the owner read my review, fired the employee and gave me cost on a vortex red dot. I upgraded my review immediately and I work directly with the owner if I have issues. Oh, and apparently that particular employee had a history of chasing customers away.

The Uber mentality of customers has become detrimental to retail. Not everyone cares about 5 Stars. In fact, negative reviews can drive business to a seller.
Being a jerk is often a sales tactic. Yes, insulting a buyer into making a large purchase is employed. Like, “I wouldn’t sell it to you, if I wanted too. Because is business is that great”. I’d think you’d get an egotistical buyer to go full MSRP, to show up a lowly sales clerk. Or, maybe they might leave bad review on Yelp or something.
It’s a gun store not a Starbucks. No one is going to write your name on the side of cup to impress you.

They talk down to everyone and then can't understand why their business fails because they have such a wonderful background. As far as customers go, expect anything and everything and just deal with it as it comes up. As a gunsmith, you will get MANY loaded and jammed firearms. When they walk in with a gun in a case, just assume the worst and ask them NOT to take the gun out of the case before you talk some. I used to love selling guns to women. They do not feel the need to act macho. :) Anytime a woman came in thinking about buying a gun, 99% of the time she left with a gun.

The female left the class. She bought a gun, took time to drive to the class to get discouraged.

5:36 thats what my father and i have done. When i was under 18 i was the one who worked for the money and new what id want we both would check it out if i liked it he'd buy it, it was mine but it was legally his. It would go back into the safe, when at the range id have mine hed have his (either pistol or shotgun, he got me into shooting clays its a lot of fun). Yes i did tsle them out of the safe alot and make sure they were empty. I just like guns, the things i like the most in life is guns, Copenhagen, video games. camping and riding atvs. Id have my pistol in my room sure, but id never take it with me when i left. Until now, in idaho we passed a law letting 18-20 year olds conceal carry in the city without a permit or anything, now i carry out and about and most of the time my father is with me as i still live at his home. We dont have shootings or anything, what we do have is people coming from other states and countries and killing us. A while ago a crazy guy from Cali shot up a correction officers house when she was hiding a woman and her daughter who he tried to kill, this guy was armed to the teeth no shit he was wearing guns like the guy from boondock saints haha, i knew that officer (she shot him and everyone is okay now) A while back a man moved here with his daughter, wife and ex wife. He ended up killing all of them and the daughters friend, no gun, still hasnt bin caught. Recently just two blocks from my house a Somalian attacked a 2 year olds birthday party and killed a little girl with a knife. Even more recently a young man had his car break down, he left his wife and young daughter to find help when he went missing, now his body was found burned and buried, my sister knew him. Its getting more and more crazy. People freak out when they hear of people under 18 owning handguns and rifles but all of my buddies across the country own them too. have since they were about 16-17 years old. Some joined the military some are wanting too including me. It isnt a matter of gun control its a matter of parenting. We were raised right so we dont do stupid shit lol. Last thing even tho we can carry a handgun we still cant buy one or ammo so idk how that works but whatever ill take what i can get.

When I look at the guns one is a full size the other a compact. The "alledged" sales person laughs a loudly says using vulgar language "Hey you're looking at two totally different size guns"! Okay, so what? I'm thinking I'm paying cash what is your #%$&&@# problem? Yep, even Christians have a salty tongue! But, I restrained myself! I politely asked "If this store had another sales person"? The owner came and chuckled "Well my guy is kinda' right can't compare two size guns"???? Huh???? I ask "So I can't compare my .45 military to my .45 commander"?
Enough was enough, I left! Never went back! THEN, I go to another shop 20 minutes away. I young gal starts to wait on me. Shes 23, since I asked her and from my home state CT. We're both in FL. This gal was amazing! What she didn't know she called an older gentleman over and they both took care of me! I bought my pistol there! Totally great experience! Sadly, they recently closed-up shop!

Walter Miner that's how it is everywhere I'm in California Bay Area there's not many gun shops around anymore and the ones that are around about two-thirds of them I won't even walk into any more because of the dumbass retarded workers in there I once watched a guy ask for a cleaning kit for his first shotgun that he bought a month before he said it was his only gun and the salesman tried to sell him a $50 cleaning kit for almost all calibers and the guy asked how do you use the kit and the salesman told him you pour the solvent on the brushes and run it through the barrel 20 or 30 times and then you use soapy water to hose out the solvent and then you use the patches to dry the inside of the barrel and then to leave the barrel off the gun for a day or so to fully dry out before reinstalling when the salesman walked away I showed the guy a shotgun cleaning kit only that was under ten bucks and explain how to properly use it informed him to look up a few TH-cam videos for better instruction and do not listen to the guy cuz he had no clue what he was talking about a week before that the same guy refuse to sell 9mm FMJ to a guy because the guy when asked what he was using them for said home defense the guy told him for home defense he would only sell him hollow points there were three times the price of the FMJ and they're only 20 rounds in the Box the guy told him I'm not buying those I want the FMJ's and the salesman told him NO and walked away from the counter to the other side of the store

@@kpusa3278 Darn worse nightmares all over!!!! I do have a funny or idiotic story not sure what to call it? At my range I went to buy a spare mag, way over-priced so I said forget it. But, conversation about spare mags sparked the sales guy. He shows me what he carrys. A Glock 17, a Glock 19 and some other smaller gun! THEN he breaks out his spare mags! He was wearing like coveralls, but nice looking. He had a half a dozen spare Glock 17 mags a three 33 round Glock fun sticks! Then he went into his different
knives, flash lights, etc. He asks "what do you think of that"? I didn't want to sound rude. So I advised him" Just don't fall off a bridge with sll that you ain't swimming out"! He probaly had more ammo in his guns and spare mags than I shoot in a range session! Lol!
Seriously, your point, I've seen/heard sales people tell some folks some actually dangerous things! I heard one person tell someone +P+ ammo is the best in ALL carry guns! I actually openned my mouth on that an advised the customer to read their manual or even better call customer service!
      Best to ya',,,,!

Walter Miner Some people are just plain dumb! I work with the public and treat everyone like they are royalty. I never talk down to everyone and give the customer what he/She wants

@@michaelmatyas4829 I was in Construction 40+ years. Probably 30 or so years in management. I negotiated contracts, constant communication with customers. Now, we are addressing millions of dollar contracts. I dealt with some of the worst! But, they ARE the customer!

Great video. I only go to a select few shops due to the people there. Their helpfulness and enthusiasm is what keeps me going back.

I hate the way you get treated in some gun stores. You get treated like a pos for wanting to spend money there. Oregon Rifleworks in Oregon is NOT like that. Best store I’ve been into. Always welcoming and ready to help without any judgment!

Thank you for making this video I have worked in many gun shops around my city and am aware of this bad attitude a lot of my former employers had to customers. I agreed with everything you had to say. As dealers it is our duty to educate, not ridicule

Tried supporting my local gun shop here in Kingman, AZ. Owner follows me around like a poorly trained asset protection guy, gets visibly annoyed if I leave without making a purchase, charges MSRP or more for most guns and, just recently, charges $90 transfer fees now to non-permit carriers. I bought my PX4 and had it transferred through them when I first moved there and it was only a $25 fee. $90 is just crazy. Next purchase will be online and probably transferred to a pawn shop in town if they okay it.

Also, great videos man. Only been into guns for a year but I've looked to a lot of your videos for knowledge. I appreciate it.
