It’s based on a legend of a witch who lived in Vesilahti,Finland, in 12th century. Her odd wish was to be buried to the churchyard, which was not allowed for people considered as witches. When the witch was dying, these four men started their journey to the cemetery in the secrecy of the night.
But the burial had to be done before first light, it didn't go to plan and they buried her in the forrest near the village. And until today you can go there and visit the grave its pile of wood, because you have to recgonize the grave and put something on the grave. otherwise you could be cursed by the witch!

So many people asking so here's the story from the album booklet. "According to the legend there were still many witches living in Vesilahti when Christianity arrived in the 12th century. They were people who for example possessed mysteruous healing skills and therefore they were not allowed in church or to be buried at the churchyard. There was one particular female witch, a healer, who had an inappropriate wish for a witch: She wanted to be buried at the churchyard. Knowing that the church would not allow this, she ordered her burial to be done in secret at night, and commanded that, were she not buried there by sunrise, she was to be buried right where they'd be at the moment. When the woman died, four trusted men started their journey to the churchyard carrying her body on a stretcher. It was a long journey and the men got lost in the dark forest. The sun started to rise and the stretcher fell from their hands. It was impossible to lift it again. Like she had ordered, they buried her right there and laid some dry wigs and tree branches on the grave since she had also declared that "Those who pass my grave shall lay a twig on it, otherwise something horrible will happen to them". The witch's tomb has been at that spot ever since, and locals passing by have thrown a twig or a tree branch on the grave creating a huge pile of wood. In the old days locals even burned the pile every spring to banish evil spirits, and every time pile reappeared again twig by twig."
+Valtteri Manala That is exactly right. Ämmänhauta is actually very impressive pile of stick and twigs. It's more of a mound of twigs and sticks, yet people keep adding to it even these days. I've thrown my fair share of sticks while passing it, since I live in Vesilahti and used to go to school quite near the place.

V Finnish lyrics below V English translation: Once under the moon and sun The mornings of life decreased In the arcane forest, In the outskirts of Vesilahti There was a healer, A skillful witch But no rest for her, No day just for her Wanted to belong, Wanted to be buried Her corpse to be taken, Carried away by others When I'm a corpse, When my days have passed Carry my body far away When the night has fallen Who passes my grave, No matter who This you have to do, Or bad things happen to you But when the dawn comes And the night has passed There'll be my grave, There I'll be laid Death takes its own, The healer into its arms So the four men take her, Carry the corpse of the witch But there's light in the sky, The first rays of the day So it's time to lay to rest, Make a place for the dead After hundreds of years, Even after a thousand years In the arcane forest, In the outskirts of Vesilahti The knowledge forgotten, The memory turned into a tale Carried in the moonlight, Buried before sunrise Who passes my grave, No matter who This you have to do, Or bad things happen to you You'll have to break a twig, Snap a rowan tree's branch Break a birch's branch, Lay a pine twig on the grave Who passes my grave, No matter who This you have to do, Or bad things happen to you You'll have to break a twig, Snap a rowan tree's branch Break a birch's branch, Lay a pine twig on the grave Finnish lyrics: Kerran alla kuun ja päivän Aleni elämän aamut Paikassa salan salolla Vesilahden laitamilla Laittoi henkiä hyväksi Toisen taitoi taitavaksi Vaan ei kolmatta eloa Omaa päivää ilman olla Tahtoi kuulla kuuluvansa Olevansa ottamatta Viedä ruumiinsa tuleva Muiden kantaa maiden paino Joka joutuin ruumistani Kiire päillä päiviäni Kantaa kauas rankoani Kuusta on valo ylennyt Joka joutuin haudastani Ohi ollen outonakin Jalan jalka-vierin käyden Yltä yhtyvän elonsa Joka päivän päälle pääsyn Sallii ylle Aamu-ahjon Siinä hauta haudakseni Siellä sammuvat alani Korjaa kuolema omansa Ottaa maille tietäjänsä Noin on neljän miehen mennä Kantaa maata taitomielen Vaan on kehrä jo kohonnut Noussut päälle päivän kulta Niin on aika maata olla Paikka mullaksi tulevan Kuin on vuosien satojen Tuhannenkin vuoden päästä Paikasta salan salolta Vesilahden laitamilta Tieto paikasta paennut Tullut muistosta tarina Kohta kuuta kaipaellut Päivää varten maate mennyt Joka joutuin haudastani Ohi ollen outonakin Jalan jalka-vierin käyden Yltä yhtyvän elonsa Siitä taittaa tammitarhan Laittaa pihlajan palaksi Siitä katkoo koivuoksan Männyn maillensa menevän Joka joutuin haudastani Ohi ollen outonakin Jalan jalka-vierin käyden Yltä yhtyvän elonsa Siitä taittaa tammitarhan Laittaa pihlajan palaksi Siitä katkoo koivuoksan Männyn maillensa menevän

Just so you know, Witch in Finnish refers mostly to Tietäjä (lit. "Knower"), seer. Knowing things, how they started was very important to Finnish Pagans.

Absolutely Great Song out of the dark Forests of Finland.....very impressive Video of an ancient lore and Legacy........i cannot understand a Single Word Finnish....but it is outstanding....
But a pile of sticks and twigs made by people who believed with all their might in the legend of a power of a woman who may have figured majorly in the power of that region during a long time past. That's real history, and real magic, in its own way.
+Jack Cordial I really doubt people actually believe in it anymore. It's just a tradition. PS. none of the sticks are old, people put a stick on the pile whenever they pass

Only those in Finland are closest in belief to the tribes in Canada! They too have a thousand stories of the land and holy people and the shaking tent of the shaman!
Has anyone else noticed that Korpiklaani has taken on a bit of a slower, more melancholic tone on this album? I like it, it's different but they do just as well with it as they do with their several albums of party jams. It's no longer just Korpiklaani, it's Korpitonia. Or Kataklaani.
+Yabbsor Superion It's still Korpiklaani, its not just the same album. They're not robots, they're not supposed to compose songs about the SAME theme over and over, no one does that, because its plain dumb.

Kerran alla kuun ja päivän
Aleni elämän aamut
Paikassa salan salolla
Vesilahden laitamilla
Laittoi henkiä hyväksi
Toisen taitoi taitavaksi
Vaan ei kolmatta eloa
Omaa päivää ilman olla
Tahtoi kuulla kuuluvansa
Olevansa ottamatta
Viedä ruumiinsa tuleva
Muiden kantaa maiden paino
Joka joutuin ruumistani
Kiire päillä päiviäni
Kantaa kauas rankoani
Kuusta on valo ylennyt
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Joka päivän päälle pääsyn
Sallii ylle aamu-ahjon
Siinä hauta haudakseni
Siellä sammuvat alani
Korjaa kuolema omansa
Ottaa maille tietäjänsä
Noin on neljän miehen mennä
Kantaa maata taitomielen
Vaan on kehrä jo kohonnut
Noussut päälle päivän kulta
Niin on aika maata olla
Paikka mullaksi tulevan
Kuin on vuosien satojen
Tuhannenkin vuoden päästä
Paikasta salan salolta
Vesilahden laitamilta
Tieto paikasta paennut
Tullut muistosta tarina
Kohta kuuta kaipaellut
Päivää varten maate mennyt
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Siitä taittaa tammitarhan
Laittaa pihlajan palaksi
Siitä katkoo koivuoksan
Männyn maillensa menevän
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Siitä taittaa tammitarhan
Laittaa pihlajan palaksi
Siitä katkoo koivuoksan

English lyric:
Once under the moon and day
Mornings of life sunk
In secret place of wilderness
Outskirts of Vesilahti
Mended broken spirits
Enchanted others to be skillful
But gave no third crop
Days to be as days are
Wanted to hear she belonged
To be without taking
To be carried before dead
Others to shoulder weight of the land
Hastily carry away my body
Before ends of my days
Carry far this trunk of mine
As long as the moon shines
Who ever passes my grave
Even bypassing stranger
If without stopping they pass
They share in this fate of mine
Zenith of the day is everyday given
Permitted to rise by furnace of morning
There is to be a grave, grave of mine
There will my gifts extinguish
Death will take its own
Takes the sage in to land of the death
So must four men do
Carry this body of sagely minded one
Yet has whorl already risen
Risen over the horizon gold of the day
And so it is my time to lay to rest
To be part of the earth
As it is to be hundredths of years
Even after thousand years
In this secret place of wilderness
Outskirts of Vesilahti
Knowledge of the place escaped
Memory has become story
Soon you will feel yearning for the moon
That is resting for day to rise
Who ever passes my grave
Even bypassing stranger
If without stopping they pass
They share in this fate of mine
And so fold sprig from oak
Give piece from rowan
Cut branch from birch
Something dead from pine
Who ever passes my grave
Even bypassing stranger
If without stopping they pass
They share in this fate of mine
And so fold sprig from oak
Give piece from rowan
Cut branch from birch
Something dead from pine
He looks like he has a pang of sadness and anguish each time he breaks a twig for the witches buriel. Good song, never fails to strike a chord in me.

Kantaa maata taitomielen
Vaan on kehrä jo kohonnut
Noussut päälle päivän kulta
Niin on aika maata olla
Paikka mullaksi tulevan
Kuin on vuosien satojen
Tuhannenkin vuoden päästä
Paikasta salan salolta
Vesilahden laitamilta
Tieto paikasta paennut
Tullut muistosta tarina
Kohta kuuta kaipaellut
Päivää varten maate mennyt
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Siitä taittaa tammitarhan
Laittaa pihlajan palaksi
Siitä katkoo koivuoksan
Männyn maillensa menevän
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Siitä taittaa tammitarhan
Laittaa pihlajan palaksi
Siitä katkoo koivuoksan
Männyn maillensa menevän
We have proof that drinking a lot of alcohol can lead to restorations of old languages and dialects !
V Finnish lyrics below V
English translation:
Once under the moon and sun
The mornings of life decreased
In the arcane forest,
In the outskirts of Vesilahti
There was a healer,
A skillful witch
But no rest for her,
No day just for her
Wanted to belong,
Wanted to be buried
Her corpse to be taken,
Carried away by others
When I'm a corpse,
When my days have passed
Carry my body far away
When the night has fallen
Who passes my grave,
No matter who
This you have to do,
Or bad things happen to you
But when the dawn comes
And the night has passed
There'll be my grave,
There I'll be laid
Death takes its own,
The healer into its arms
So the four men take her,
Carry the corpse of the witch
But there's light in the sky,
The first rays of the day
So it's time to lay to rest,
Make a place for the dead
After hundreds of years,
Even after a thousand years
In the arcane forest,
In the outskirts of Vesilahti
The knowledge forgotten,
The memory turned into a tale
Carried in the moonlight,
Buried before sunrise
Who passes my grave,
No matter who
This you have to do,
Or bad things happen to you
You'll have to break a twig,
Snap a rowan tree's branch
Break a birch's branch,
Lay a pine twig on the grave
Who passes my grave,
No matter who
This you have to do,
Or bad things happen to you
You'll have to break a twig,
Snap a rowan tree's branch
Break a birch's branch,
Lay a pine twig on the grave
Finnish lyrics:
Kerran alla kuun ja päivän
Aleni elämän aamut
Paikassa salan salolla
Vesilahden laitamilla
Laittoi henkiä hyväksi
Toisen taitoi taitavaksi
Vaan ei kolmatta eloa
Omaa päivää ilman olla
Tahtoi kuulla kuuluvansa
Olevansa ottamatta
Viedä ruumiinsa tuleva
Muiden kantaa maiden paino
Joka joutuin ruumistani
Kiire päillä päiviäni
Kantaa kauas rankoani
Kuusta on valo ylennyt
Joka joutuin haudastani
Ohi ollen outonakin
Jalan jalka-vierin käyden
Yltä yhtyvän elonsa
Joka päivän päälle pääsyn
Sallii ylle Aamu-ahjon
Siinä hauta haudakseni
Siellä sammuvat alani
Korjaa kuolema omansa
Ottaa maille tietäjänsä

Just so you know, Witch in Finnish refers mostly to Tietäjä (lit. "Knower"), seer.
Knowing things, how they started was very important to Finnish Pagans.
I love this song. I play it every morning in the dawn when I go to my job.
jotenkin lisää mystisyyttä tuo viulu ja laulajan ääni, perisuomalaista. erottuu hyvin toisista ja hyvää jälkeä tekevä bändi on kyllä \m/
+camilla hymiö perus-Korpiklaania :)
wow the best folk band in the world
I love this beautiful, smooth language!
E a noite tiver passado
Lá será meu túmulo,
Lá eu serei colocada
A Morte toma para si,
A curandeira em seus braços
Então os quatro homens a levam,
Levam o cadáver da bruxa
E então, há luz no céu,
Os primeiros raios do dia
É hora de descansar,
Construam um lugar para os mortos
Depois de centenas de anos,
Mesmo depois de milhares de anos
Na floresta arcana,
Nos arredores de Vesilahti
A sabedoria esquecida,
A memória transformada em lenda
Carregada sob a luz da lua,
Enterrada antes do amanhecer
Legal!

I love playing this song in my car really loud in the summertime, it helps to drown out the annoying rap and pop music that people in my town play.
I feel your pain dude
Same.
you are just as big of a dickhead as them

Absolutely Great Song out of the dark Forests of Finland.....very impressive Video of an ancient lore and Legacy........i cannot understand a Single Word Finnish....but it is outstanding....
Favorite country after listening to this music.
Greetings from Russia.
Great, One of my groups I like
Achm... Karelia... akhm...
Love from India...purely made my mood.
Esse album é lindo... adoro
Wow. I can't get enough of this video! The first time I watched it I was actually lost for words..
😌
I have not a clue to what is said, but it speaks to my soul. Given me goosebumps.
I love it how Jonne decided to bury the witch even after the rest of the men abandoned her. Kudos to Jonne! :D
THAT is what I call a beaufiful landscape

That accordion solo is awesome! I never heard something like that before, a guitar solo played on the accordion!
I played accordion as a kid, stopped in 1990 because started listening metal, now I play bass guitar but accordion wasn't bad, maybe I should back?
I like the voice :)
+Kateřina Černoušková I love you
???
+Kateřina Černoušková You probably have personal stalker now.
uh-oh, my boyfriend will go nuts :D
+Kateřina Černoušková mě taky!
these guys normally sound so happy and up beat, but i like tge way this song sounds
I want to go to finland to see this tomb
Korpiklaani has convinced me
It's just a pile of sticks and twigs.
But a pile of sticks and twigs made by people who believed with all their might in the legend of a power of a woman who may have figured majorly in the power of that region during a long time past. That's real history, and real magic, in its own way.
+Jack Cordial
I really doubt people actually believe in it anymore. It's just a tradition.
PS. none of the sticks are old, people put a stick on the pile whenever they pass
KK426LH its not the tomb, its the story behind it thats what brings interest to me
Love these guys, they got such great tunes!
Greetings from Russia,St. Petersburg. I really love Finns and their real rock music. Now i know about Korpiklaani.
Ok, now how about Karelia?
Even though i dont understand a single word of the music of this guys, the feeling and epicity of the lyrics are awesome af
None of them believing in her attempt, all trying, some staying and hoping. The heroes of Ämmänhauta were here carriers.

come to America we love your music I would buy tickets come to Nashville advertise through the local radio stations...you are gods of polka mental all hail your wonderful gift of music..
Only those in Finland are closest in belief to the tribes in Canada! They too have a thousand stories of the land and holy people and the shaking tent of the shaman!
U can´t understand a single word, but it´s feels so true!
I don't know why but this song makes me sad feels like so much emotion in it
I don't understand shit he's singing, but I can feel my beard growing

My favorite Korpiklaani song. Folk metal the best.
Oh WOW a KORPIKLAANI song that is NOT ABOUT GETTING DRUNK. COOL COOL.
+Marcelo Bassalo They have tons, the fact that you have just listen to the famous songs doesnt mean that they only make that kind of music.
+Oswaldo Antonio I think you didn't get it was just humor ^^'... As Korpi is known mainly for his drunk part.
Everyone i ask if he know korpiklaani always say: Sure vodka tequila beer beer... So i tell them ok you really dont know korpiklaani :D
+Marcelo Bassalo But they still drink some haha
+Marcelo Bassalo i cant understand the lyrics so im not sure this isnt about getting drunk

richtig geil.
Sounds very very good!
This damn accordion solo. How can it be so good
Finnish language sounds magic...
I love finnish language.I love our uralic brothers too.Uralic & Altaic Unite for the greater World
Has anyone else noticed that Korpiklaani has taken on a bit of a slower, more melancholic tone on this album? I like it, it's different but they do just as well with it as they do with their several albums of party jams. It's no longer just Korpiklaani, it's Korpitonia. Or Kataklaani.
+Yabbsor Superion Plus on this from me.
+Yabbsor Superion It's still Korpiklaani, its not just the same album. They're not robots, they're not supposed to compose songs about the SAME theme over and over, no one does that, because its plain dumb.
+Yabbsor Superion just increase the speed of the video to 1.5 and it sounds even better ;)
Yes, one of my favorites in new album.
