  • We took our Hyundai Ioniq 5 on a winter road trip from Norway to Germany. We drove from Oslo to Göteborg and took the Stena Line ferry to Kiel. From Kiel we drove to Linz on the Rhine, a total of 900 km. Due to the weather conditions we needed to abortr the first attempt and try again.

    Thank you Christopher, as a soon to be owner living in Sweden, this is very helpful. I just wish the Ionity charging network would have come further where I live. Take care and drive safe!

    Absolutely perfect and commendable decision! Know your own limits but beware that the others may not know theirs.

    Ugh… the footage on snowy highways gave me sweaty palms! It's great that you can engage "snow mode" in those circumstances. I would assume that the adaptive cruise control works just fine in such stop-and-go traffic, but… I can't imagine that the HDA II is able to detect the lines on snowy roads and keep the car in your lane. I'm impressed that the DCFC stations charged the battery so quickly in such cold temperatures. I really hope to make my next EV an Ioniq 5, but they are very scarce here and the dealers are adding huge markups to the MSRP. The cabin on the boat was fun to see! Your journeys always makes me wish… we'd stayed in Europe. Thanks for sharing!

    Thank you for your nice and informative videos.
    You drive an awd ioniq, but it looks like my ioniq 5 latest model, uses almost the same energy on trips.
    Also, I never got this preheating working when using the build inn navigation.
    Must look your old video again :-)

      I use a P45 model. It should be quite comparable to the 23 model that has a slightly larger battery.

    Always a risk driving in snow. I would like to see car manufacturers offer car control training. Every type of car handles different yet nobody gets to know this handling until it skids on snow and ice.

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. The trip was a good training. The traction on snow is excellent and I just use normal winter tires without spikes.

    Like the Ioniq5 video's you made! I'll pick up my IO5 next week. Will be doing a roadtrip with the car to Norway this summer. Starting in The Netherlands, will take the ferry from Hirtshals (to Larvik, return from Kristiansand). Do you have any tips for the long trip and for my stay in Norway? I will have an 58KwH version, so we will need a bit more charging stops. Any charging passes you recommend me to get? And tips for visiting Olso by car?

      The pre heating function here seems still a bit “rough” and needs to be improved. But at least it was made available.

      I use Car Scanner Pro on an older Android phone. The dongle is a cheap one that I bought here: www.kjell.com/no/produkter/elektro-og-verktoy/maleinstrumenter/obd-2/obd-2-adapter-for-bluetooth-p48861

    Nice trip ! How do you find the next stop for getting the preconditioning ?

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have driven this particular route many times, so I just selected the next Ionity charger since I have a discount there. On the way back, I actually switched off the prewarming function after the first charging stop because the temperatures were well above 0.

    Hi there. Not finish to whach your video, but like in advance. It's few monts till i will get my awd ioniq5. There's so many information about issues with that car after last update. That battery precondition is not working well, that eco mode start extremely slow, etc. What is your experience? What about no rear wiper in that weather and all cameras when such a weather conditions? In 7:21 when you start to fill screen fluid, over bolts beside blue cap i saw brown colour. Is it rust?

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can only say that every thing works well. The battery preconditioning function is only a bit basic. It is basically on or off and there is little you can do if the charger is not in the navigation. I wish for a manual function where you can just switch it on manually and also switch it off. The missing rear wiper is not a problem for me, but yes the rear window always gets very dirty quickly, also in good weather. The brown color you saw is the rust protection that all cars get in Norway. So that is not rust. So I experience no issues and the car has the latest software. When we got it, in june 2021, the software was a bit "unpolished" and also the driving assistance function worked not so well, but now they work really good (HDA, auto-steering, and so on).

    I have the preheat as well. But is it true that it disconnects when the battery is low? Meaning that it is better to arrive with 30 % and charge, instead of arriving with only 15 %, because you will only charge with 70 kwh?

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      The preconditioning stops at around 24-20%. It also consumes more energy, so to me it happened that I thought I would arrive with 30% and actually arrived with 20%. Especially if there are other factors like snow that raise the consumption. So yes, the optimal way would be to charge exactly when the prewarming stops.

  • @vic5721
    @vic5721 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed that you charge to 100%, I have heard you need to charge to 80% to prolong the battery. Thoughts? Any battery degradation?

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically it is better to only charge to 80%. I rarely use fast chargers and charge mostly at home. So the few times I use them like on these road trips, I just charge it to whatever is needed at the moment. There should be no problem.

    • @1sword4you
      @1sword4you ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's just that charging to 100% is super slow. As Christopher also mentioned in the video it takes about 10 minutes to charge 50%->80% and it takes another 20 minutes to charge 80%->100%. But since he was taking a break, walking kids or eating then it doesn't really matter.
      As far as degradation - Hyundai gives a 2 year / 100 000km warranty to taxis - that's the use case where the care will be fast charged multiple times per day. It's 8 year / 160 000km warranty for regular consumers. The warranty claims at least 70% charge retained or you get factory replacement.

    With your experience? What does Snow mode do? Is it just reducing Regen braking or does it also interfere with other settings? I havent seen any snow on the road yet with my EV6. So I have yet to experience it.

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Snow mode uses all wheels to accelerate the car (if you have AWD). It also softens the driver input and reduces regen. It work really well. You feel like you are driving a different car once you switch it on. I use it only when the entire street is covered with snow. On the highway I usually switch it off. It is very helpful when driving/parking in slower speeds. You almost forget that it is slippery.

    How many kilometres does the car do per 100% charge

    • @christophersvideos
      @christophersvideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Winter it depends very much on the conditions (temperature and whether there is snow as well as terrain). I would guess 340 km, if the conditions are bad 300 km.
