I love the Ioniq 5. Definitely my favorite current EV. The one thing that really doesn't come across online is the size. First time I saw one in person I was like woah this thing is actually small SUV size. It is pretty wide and has a lot of presence.
One of the best reviewers we have heard in years. One of the VERY few who dares to touch on ‘environmental issues’ as well. A real bonus when evaluating the move to an EV. We bought the exact model featured in this video in a 2024. As he touches on, the charging topic is as important as any consideration. Know too, that if you are planning a road trip over 750 miles, you will be smart to pre determine your stops for public chargers. These will be needed every 90-120 minutes if you are traveling near 75mph+. This EV is much better suited for in town use and trips under 200 miles in length. That said, the vehicle is such a solid option and departure from gas powered autos and with a home charger, it’s a huge win.
I really love the design language they used, it does look like a neo retro hot hatch and I love it... But it just makes me wish it was actually a small-ish hot hatch instead of yet another large-ish crossover! If they make an EV small hatch version that looks this good, I would totally get one!
Own same one since March 2022.. limited Digital green and Just love this car. It is not perfect... Nothing is.. but this car is just perfect for an electric car. The fuel savings are much more than $4,500 in 5 years if you charge at home as commercial chargers are almost 3 to 5 time more expensive than home charge. If you have solar at home, even more savings. The car is very comfortable for short and ling drives and yes, be attentive and alert when using HDA or any autopilot on any car. I would recomend this to everyone who can shell out the cash today. I believe starting 2025, Hyundai will be manufacturing these in US and will get the tax credits.
Actually, in Korea, I saw Ioniq 5 towing. It is possible to tow. If this car had a Benz or BMW logo, it would not be the price it is at. It breaks down mental image of what people thought of Hyundai
Most reviews of the Ionic 5 complaint is wireless CarPlay. However, most reviewers never mention there are many wireless Bluetooth adapters that plug into the front USB port for wireless CarPlay. Most are very compact and have short cable that comes with USB USB-C adapter and fits perfectly in the cubby hole below.
I plan to relinquish my Model 3 for an Ioniq 5 Limited AWD in the not-too-distant future. I've sick of my Tesla, and my wife hates it. Your review was thoughtful and thorough, although… I like those wheels, and think CyberGray is the best color.
Excellent review! We'll done. One suggestion, pls include the yr of the vehicle. Couldn't tell if this is a 22 or 23. I'm looking at a 23, and I believe it has wireless carplay, an improvement from 22 model, if true. Again, well done.
The point about speed and acceleration is very valid. I'll even go a step further... I have a 2015 hybrid Toyota which does 0-100 kmph in 11 seconds and is limited to 180 kmph. I had faster cars and I drove faster cars, yet not once in 8 years did I think to myself "this car is definitely too slow!". The idea that any modern car is too slow, let alone any EV, is just silly to me. Most cars are way too fast for normal people.
Nice and informative video! However, please consider adding metric conversions for miles, gallons, feet, etc. when going over specs, at least on the screen. TH-cam has an international audience, and those imperial units are pretty much exclusive to the US.
I think this is a great overall video! I really do like the Ionic 5. I remember when they came out and they were selling really fast. I love the color and the way it looks. I can’t think of anything bad to say about it besides the annoyance of having no climate control buttons. It’s not the end of the world but it’s still a little inconvenient.
Very nice review. I planned on getting an Ioniq 5 before I ordered my Mustang Mach-E. Vehicle to load and faster charging were big pluses for the Ioniq 5. But the frunk was too small, I didn't think Hyundai would ever add TH-cam to the ioniq 5, and it didn't support plug and charge. I also fell out of love with the styling a lot faster than I thought I would ☹️. But it still seems like a fantastic car.
In the future, I will no doubt be tempted by the Ioniq N. I had a Veloster N awhile back that was a blast to drive and Hyundai seems pretty dedicated to making fun cars with the N badge. That said, I'm still driving into too many remote parts of the country where the infrastructure for EVs isn't good so I'm figuring I'm years away from an EV. Nor do I want to drop that kind of money on now when EVs in 5 years might have double or triple the range. I suspect Hyundai is going to have tempting options at that point.
Hi sir. I think it would be super cool if you did one of these in depth videos on new car companies. Like a rivian, fisker ocean or lucid air. Just a suggestion because there is a lot of unknown on these car brands and you give a lot of information other people don’t
Loved the design of the Ioniq 5 the second it came out, the best looking new car on the market right now IMO! And thanks for pointing out the one thing that bothers me in most new cars: visibility! All those giant A-pillars and tiny rear windows make cars feel like 2 ton coffins, nevermind how scary it is to have a car completely disappear in those blind spots. I'm glad there's still a new car out there that lets you actually see out of it 😂
I think it's one of the few cars that manages to actually look futuristic while also looking current and not tacky. I agree with Ethan on the bumper lines dating quickly and I'm not a fan of the wheels either. Otherwise, it's a really great design that I think will hold up.
No rear wiper trend was obviously created by designers who never spent any real time in snowy winter climates and/or must always be able to park in a garage? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Would love to go EV for the last couple of years, but still not sold on winter range. I don't have a second vehicle and the charging situation where I'm at (when going on longer trips) worries me too much. I'll probably go PHEV for at least 5 years first before full EV.
Maybe i got lucky because my awd ioniq 5 gets 330 miles at 100% realistically closer to 290-300 with ac, and the fastest i able to charge in north america is 250 kw, NA charging infrastructure doesn’t support the 350 kw charging speed the ioniq is capable of, being bottle necked. Plus and a con at the same time But when 350 kw chargers come out, the car will not be outdated. I think it will allow the car to hold its value, well see tho! Cheers!
bouncing between the Ioniq5 and its sisters and the BMW i4 but I have not seen enough on the BMW for comparison (outisde of the top of the line 50). Drove a Model Y last year and it was OK. Drove a Ioniq5 and it was good - pretty much what you would expect from a car manufacturer. Only issue that I noticed was the turning radius seemed a little short. But it is on my short list.
Man i haven't checked out your videos in a while... This is top notch Ethan! Loving the subscriber count too! I've always said that EV's are like the "running shoes" of the car market... it's almost like they go out of their way to make them ugly! The Ioniq5, not so much! It does harken back to some 80's almost "VW Rabbit" design, but at first glance I thought they totally ripped off the Audi A3 Sportback. Which is fine by me, because Audi is dumb and wouldn't bring that car over to the states in fear of cannibalizing sales from the Golf (which makes no sense but that's what the Audi rep at the autoshow told me). I totally agree with you on the wheels, they are pretty rough, and those hideously 80's lines in the rear bumper gotta go... They need to get rid of that "indent" where the license plate looks like it's angled up, and just make it straight. Then ditch those lines in the bumper and just integrate the bumper with the color scheme of the rest of the car. I'd also like to see some solid color options instead of the 2-tone... but that's me. This thing in all black with blacked out windows would look pretty sharp. Also agree with the climate functions... ya need knobs there so you don't need to take your eyes off the road... or at least be able to access the options through the steering wheel. You could eventually memorize the button sequence to get to the menu and adjust from there. But still, more of a pain in the ass than just turning a knob. All in all, I can't figure out if I'm just old or if the dollar bill is completely worthless... but $50k for a the mid-range option is just ridiculous. Especially since this doesn't qualify for the tax incentive. In my mind the EV push is way ahead of the infrastructure to support it. LA can't even endure a heatwave without rolling brownouts, how are they going to support every house running AC and multiple EV chargers at once? Personally, I think PG&E has Newsom in their pocket and they're using him while funding the EV push in an attempt to recoup some of the billions they've lost in lawsuits over the last decade all while making everyone dependent on them for electricity... by that's my own little conspiracy theory haha. For now, I'll keep clubbing baby seals with my gas guzzler as that's still significantly cheaper than the payment on a $50k loan. In closing... holy hell!!! That Kia EV6 should have been killed at birth! Possibly the ugliest car since the Pontiac Aztec! Jesus that thing is gross!
Wait, why wouldn't I be towing with an Ioniq 5? If this is my only car, what other car am I supposed to use for towing? And what is the new towing capacity?
2,300 lbs. Very few people will bother installing a tow hitch on a car with a towing capacity this low. EVs also tend to lose quite a bit of range when towing-they're often not ideal tow vehicles
@@HelloRoad thanks bro for info! 1200 kg is not bad at all, covers 95% of my towing needs; my boat, motorcycle, buying construction material för the house, or buying furniture, throwing out branches and stuff from the garden. Without the hitch, it's not a full car and I would never buy it
Very good point of about the power of these EVs. It is dangerous ! There should be a limitation like family mode, it should lock the performance/accelleration etc. by your preference just with software.

As a Canadian, I don't understand this trend to make new EVs without rear wipers! They'd be a nightmare in winter.
