- Composer and conductor Eric Whitacre has inspired millions by bringing together "virtual choirs," singers from many countries spliced together on video. Now, for the first time ever, he creates the experience in real time, as 32 singers from around the world Skype in to join an onstage choir (assembled from three local colleges) for an epic performance of Whitacre's "Cloudburst," based on a poem by Octavio Paz.

Anyone who hasn't listened to Eric Whitacre's music should go and listen to some now. His works are breathtaking.
anyone reading this probably has though
@@sub-zeroseanotrs1857 I didn't then I saw his first Ted and wow... It got me the shivers...
Here speaks the Philistine!
the MOMENT I REALIZED THAT THE SNAPPING WAS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE RAIN TINKLING.... I LOST IT
Brilliant. wow.
K
Snapped along--did you? Sure need rain here in Northern Cali..
@@lilithrogers5204 - sure did! :)
Eric Whitacre has done it again! I keep thinking these virtual choirs can't get any better and they do! I am a fan! I cried at the end because it was so beautiful. Simply stunning!
The tonic chord king! Wow…don’t hear many composers use such unique harmonies and chords, well done everyone!
I sang in this choir :)
Mildly envious fella, my singing days are sadly well behind me.
How fabulous!!!! Congratulations Alan.. What a blessing.
Lucky!!!
Umm, okay.........so?
Yo, how did you put your submission? :D
I really do enjoy his work. I am very happy to know I was able to participate in playing some of his music and having him direct me. He is such a kind man and I will never forget the experience.
I like how he included the audience as well :)
Never before now have I experienced any music that's taken my breath away. This literally made my insides stop. Thank you Mr Whitacre. x
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir is one of the greatest ever ideas. It is mesmerizing, electrifying and unbelievable. In South India, we have a tradition of singing as a group during Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival at Thiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu, India where nearly 5000 + singers sing in unison. Likewise, this is also amazing.
"OCTAVIO PAZ" 😍😍😍 his essays and poetry helped me survive
I have listened to this piece dozens of times. It's never really resonated with me until I watched this performance of it. Truly stunning!
Bizarre, amazing complex chords and harmonies, only you Eric, well done!
I saw this performed live by an amazing high school choir and I was absolutely mind blow. Gives me the chills every time.
Wow, you have any idea how many different people with different traditions, cultures and beliefs are united here in perfect harmony? If only world leaders and politicians whould practice this...
Agree completely - why are politicians so disharmonious instead of beautiful and creative like this music....
i love the idea of conducting the audience!
Incredible. And yes, very nice with the snapping raindrops. Standing ovation indeed. Really love the text to the music as well.
Genius! I close my eyes and I can see the rain with those clouds....everything he described in the beginning. The finger snapping for rain was the most unique musical expression I've ever heard. Absolutely amazing. Chills all the way 👏
This is what technology is for.
Ain't that the truth! Thank goodness it exists - both the technology and the music!
When you are ahead of times...the visionary Mr. Whitacre ...2020 And now everyone is rushing trying to do the same!
Greatest composer of this era.
All things are relative don't you know? 'Laughs pompously'
@Piano No, he's Rıght
Hardly

the snapping is genius!
Every time I watch one of these videos l am moved to tears
I'm glad Lucius Malfoy has found his true talent.
Wah 😁
Yass! Lol
I realized the video was 12 minutes as soon as I finished it. In my mind it was perhaps 3 minutes. -Absolutely epic.
Lovely. I can't get enough of Whitacre's creations.
Music is also a contribution to humanity. It can change emotional and other states of mind, therefore enhancing performance or simply making people feel better. My profession requires me to think a lot and the right kind of music can almost instantly put me in the zone.
I am pretty sure many people can relate to that as well. In some areas, the right mental state can make all the difference between finding an excellent solution and going in circles until you have to make a 4am decision.
I don't know if Eric ever reads this, but if you do. OMG. I came across you last week on TED talks and can't get enough now haha. Goosebumps every time I hear the choirs. Your brilliance, passion and vision is something to BEHOLD. I watched a talk on TED from Elizabeth Gilbert about creativity and does it come from within or from an external source and the artist is the vessel. I have to say...something is travelling through you which is soul touching. you make me cry. I work as a Psychologist and hear the worst of the worst stories as you can imagine. Thankyou thankyou thankyou for giving me (oh and of course the rest of the world haha) something extraordinary. A connection. much love. Namaste. x
Me too Taylor and I just discovered him today - four years after your comment here. What a genius!
So beautiful! I couldn listen without tears in my eyes.

I love Sleep! I love how the Navy band and Sea Chanters do it. Listen to it over and over.
I remember singing this piece. So beautiful
For real
I almost clapped when it ended... Then I realized I was sitting in my dorm room. haha
This is such an inspiration! I started my virtual gospel choir 4 months ago, and it's an incredible experience for us! Thank you @eric whitacre for lighting the path 🙏 un gran abrazo desde Argentina! 🎵
his hair...
absolutely incredible and amazing... if that dont give you chills you must be dead. overwhelming... powerful...
Music brings people together in so many ways
YAY! RCC!!! What a gorgeous legacy of beautiful music!
My choir director takes time to let all of us know that Eric re-tweeted one of his tweets every time we do a song by him in choir😂😂
Haha
We love choir teachers ❤️
Bruh the raining sound is just so beautiful
The expressions of music moves the soul and Eric Whitacre's compositions and the blending of a world wide human choir is so uplifting.
I love Whitacre's music and this did not disappoint. Beautiful!
158 thumbs down??? Perhaps they were not included in the final production? How could you not enjoy & support this uniting mission of humanity, beauty & love of music?
The finger clicking is a wonderful musical idea in this context, it sounds great. The clusters, everybody singing their own tone are good too.
This approach, live using skype as an extra choir is not such a revelation like the virtual choirs are to me though.
How people connect through music boggles my mind.
How?
Just Fantastic!!!!!!
" Fabulous "
Loved the use of Hand Bells
And the clicking of Fingers!!!!
Amazing Sound!
Just Like Rain!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoa! International choir from home! Beautiful peace of music too!
I was fortunate enough to see this live. It was AMAZING
Goosebumps and tears. Eric Whitacre is a genious!
Eric Whitacre made a great creation here ! That's a new trend of Music ! Fantastic.
We posted on the TED website a while ago, but neglected to share with viewers on TH-cam that those of us that sang live over Skype have gone on to form our own virtual choir, Cantores Connexi, and we are delighted to share with you are first independent performance, Eric Whitacre's The Seal Lullaby (watch?v=qpVSV4oSR-w) Please do take the time to watch and enjoy! Best wishes, Cantores Connexi
Brought a tear to my eye.
Lovely! Amo a Mexico! Gracias!
Wow love Eric he is amazing
¡¡¡AMAZING!!! I had not seen this particular piece! You need to see Virtual Choir 5, and the latest.... Number 6!!!!!
This virtual choirs that Eric Whitacre did, I thought was actually unique and amazing, I say for sure it must've took very hard work .
Interesting modulations and harmonies♥️🎼❣️ Ahhhh I Love how the bells bring in the virtual choir. 🪄💡✨. WOW… JUST WOW.
Plot twist: this was all just a Skype ad.
Ian Brooks 😂
IF that is all you can see it as then you have missed the point all together, ask anyone who sang in it, & you will find it was NOT 'just a Skype ad.' It was used as one perhaps but in truth it is a work of art. ENJOYED by most who shared in it & heard it.
@@newsviewstoday5689 wow. Talk about having your panties in a twist. Obviously it is a joke.
@@newsviewstoday5689 its a joke chill out
Tea
Just came across this video for the first time. Amazing, just amazing.
he's a really fantastic speaker.
Mr Whitacre ty for following your bliss & helping to unite the world in harmony.
It's raining outside as I'm watching this, and I can't tell the difference.
mesmerized literally.
Inspiring. Hope for the world even though small.
He makes me proud to say that I went to music school at UNLV!! It's a really cool program with access to performance opportunities on the strip. I got to do some amazing things while I was there.
As a person whose performed in classical choir for years including lots of Whitacre pieces, I have to say that his songs hold something that I don't think I've ever experienced with another composer. This isn't my favorite song of his, but he's honestly extraordinary. Singing "Water Night" or "Sleep" was for me an almost religious experience. This was a little over done, but he's really an amazing artist.
Magnificent. Close your eyes when listening.
Awesome!!! Thank you!!! Cloudburst!!
Probably one of his strangest pieces. And to say that, having sung "Leonardo Dreams" as an Alto 2.
Definitely strange
Eric Whitacre is awesome!
yeah i agree. i kinda wished that only the virtual chorus sang the second half but i guess it was the fact that they could be there to participate.
Thank you Eric!!!!!!
The only words I can come up with is a meager ... WOW! Well done.
Amazes me every time. Too good for my puny ears and brain to understand. All the different dynamics-wow.
Just gonna point out, the lyrics are adapted from a spanish poem. He put the text to the music he himself wrote though, and that's where the artistry comes in. The idea of a virtual choir came later, and it isn't to change the way music is heard, it's giving a way for people all over the world to come together and make music. I recommend checking out his virtual choir project "Sleep," it conveys the idea really well.
That was an amazing performance by so many talented people. Wow. Thanks for sharing one awesome performance.
speech starts: 0:12
song starts: 3:36
virtual choir actually start: 9:02~9:19
Eric Whitacre is such a boss
One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
He could help the performers in Vegas. So beautiful and interactive
chills....all over. amazing
Extraordinary!
This guy has the coolest hair especially for a music guy. The whole thing is "otherworldly" or ethereal.
Beautiful. TEDTalks get better every year.
Seriously a DREAM to sing directed by Eric Whitacre.
This is beautiful. Thank you so much for doing this, Eric. Can't wait to be a part of VC4!
Wow that was electrifying
So happy watching this. Just brilliant. SUCH a force for good :)
Beautiful! And amazing!!!
Wow..... It's drizzling... That was AWEmazing
I'm usually fairly stoic but this piece gave me chills.
although I don't really like much of Whitacre's music (except sleep) I have to say there is something about him totally totally inspiring!
The low amount of views on this video is absolutely criminal.

Word!
It’s a hard type of music to get into. I personally love spacey, airy and ethereal types of music but the music of Whitacre that I’ve seen featured on TH-cam videos are confusing to me. They have too many things going on to account for the web delay so that makes it hard for me to pick out what I like. When he demonstrated this a few years ago I thought the 2 minutes clip he featured sounded absolutely beautiful but as time progressed and more layers were added I just didn’t care for it. I definitely respect his talent as an artist. But with all art some people just don’t get it. It doesn’t mean it’s bad it just means it’s listening base can be small so I can understand why viewership for this video is so low. It’s not for everyone. I did just listen to Water Night and it is beautiful.
Too bad its in spanish, I guess english isn't good enough
Beautiful
cant wait for Virtual Choir 4 :)
my eyes full of tears
@Tonyfalca - the Virtual Choir members had to audition to be part of the TED Choir. I know several of them and know that most of them sing in live choirs.
They were sing and snapping for real.
Amazing! Why did YT only recommended this to me now May 2020? Thank You for this.
NEW INTRO? Oooooh! Finally got over that BUM BUM BUUUUUUUM that I always jumped over. :D
Absolutely extraordinary
WONDERFUL!
