My choir teacher's wife brought in their infant daughter in a carriage and placed her tenderly on the piano. She looked stressed and worn out and the baby looked fussy. We were all hanging out and they asked us to be quiet enough to let the baby sleep. They went into the office to talk. The baby grew fussy and started to whimper. Our choir very softly sang "Sleep" to her and by the end, we noticed the teachers standing behind us, teary eyed. The baby had fallen asleep. I will remember it forever

Whitacre uses dissonance in ways I have never heard. Almost every thing he does involves dissonance. Yet he manages to make the sound of voices clashing beautiful. It is a particular talent.

Taylork64 Music is so intricately designed, yet is so beautiful and so far past the horizon of understanding that any and all cultures have music involved in their daily lives. Music already ties the people of the world together, and even the universe in its sounds cried out, creating a musical vallehalah for whatever lies beyond that glorious expanse of infinity...

The evening hangs beneath the moon
A silver thread on darkened dune
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon
Upon my pillow, safe in bed
A thousand pictures fill my head
I cannot sleep my minds a flight
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
If there are noises in the night
    A frighting shadow, flickering light
    Then I surrender unto sleep
Where clouds of dreams give second sight
What dreams may come both dark and deep
Of flying wings and soaring leap
    As I surrender unto sleep
    As I surrender unto sleep

Interesting how, with so many voices, the vowels are not as rounded, yet the sound is even richer and deeper. One of the most sonically incredible ideas I've ever heard.

This song relies on dissonance and while our choir, which worked with Whitacre, did try to go for the perfect harmony, I think this is a beautiful version of the song. The dissonance with the off timing and less rounded adds a whole new element

How to should be, yes. How it can be? Not anytime soon. No perfect utopia can exist besides heaven. Besides heaven, all utopias eventually become dystopias. The origin of the the word "utopia" literally means "perfect place" but also "cannot exist".

It will surely happen one day. If you look at the progression of human civilization it has been a slow and long process of unification. We started with families, then went to tribes, and then nations, and now we're in the process of continental unification and even intercontinental. I think this will keep happening but at a quicker rate in the next few decades and into the next century.

This is a perfect example of how strangers all over the world, from different cultures, races and religions can create something beautiful. Now if the rest of us can follow their example, the world woul be a better place for ALL of us to live in. We are all just people. Human beings that despite our differences are all part of the same family. I hope that one day we all, ALL OF US, can live in the harmony that was beautifully presented here. Thank you for the inspiration, and the HOPE.

At this terrible time of coronavirus destroying our communities, its heartening to hear the good that we can achieve once under a common purpose. If only we could achieve such grace and equality in all things that we do.

I am pleased to see that there were many non-English speaking countries who took part. Mexico, Chile, Germany, Netherlands, China, etc. While there weren't many, it is powerful to note there are some. I believe there would be more, but there is a learning curve. Not necessarily with language, but with how the music was written.

Yes. It is late right now and I'm ready for sleep. My mind wandered into the heavenlies, picturing my Creator and his beautiful Orchestra of different peoples around the world finally being able to rest from their weariness of this planet and singing together in harmony...rest.
"After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

I listened to this for the first time in sophomore or junior year of high school because my select choir group was having problems focusing that day. My teacher put this song on and had us all sit with our eyes closed. Then he brought out the sheet music and had us start learning it. We were instantly more calm and focused. I was in love with this song. I listened to it all the time. I'm now a sophomore in college, and I hadn't listened to it in a while. Someone on Facebook was doing a 24 styles of Shape of You. As soon as Eric Whitacre popped up I came here to listen again to this song. It calms my soul.

Can you please give me a brief explanation of of what I'm watching and listening to, so I can appreciate it even more.
It "looks like" a large number of people sang parts of a song, and than submitted them to you for mixing and editing. Thus, you have this "virtual" chorus.
Am I correct on some of the details. Also, can I get the link to the TED talk given on this, as I see people commenting on it - I absolutely love TED talks.
Thank you so much in advance for your kindness and help.

The idea for a virtual choir is for anyone anywhere with a home camera and microphone with access to the internet to sing a part in one of Whitacre's productions. People from all over the world sign up, receive their parts, and sing them into the computer and upload them. In his first, "Lux Aurumque," a woman in a village in Africa with battery power for her laptop sang her part. A technician syncs the voices and an animator blocks in the vid. Then Whitacre "conducts." The singers get the music and a vid of him conducting their part with the chords that they need to use as they practice their parts. What you end up with is a worldwide choir.
