listening to one person, or even a couple can be beautiful..
but so many.. it as if you can hear their souls joining together, in a harmoniously breathtaking connection..

This song relies on dissonance and while our choir, which worked with Whitacre, did try to go for the perfect harmony, I think this is a beautiful version of the song. The dissonance with the off timing and less rounded adds a whole new element

How to should be, yes. How it can be? Not anytime soon. No perfect utopia can exist besides heaven. Besides heaven, all utopias eventually become dystopias. The origin of the the word "utopia" literally means "perfect place" but also "cannot exist".

It will surely happen one day. If you look at the progression of human civilization it has been a slow and long process of unification. We started with families, then went to tribes, and then nations, and now we're in the process of continental unification and even intercontinental. I think this will keep happening but at a quicker rate in the next few decades and into the next century.

Taylork64 Music is so intricately designed, yet is so beautiful and so far past the horizon of understanding that any and all cultures have music involved in their daily lives. Music already ties the people of the world together, and even the universe in its sounds cried out, creating a musical vallehalah for whatever lies beyond that glorious expanse of infinity...

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 2.0, 'Sleep' is also known through the eyes of any effects program as "a shitstorm of rendering". this must have taken days to render... hats off to you, your skill as a composer, and your computer.

The evening hangs beneath the moon
A silver thread on darkened dune
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon
Upon my pillow, safe in bed
A thousand pictures fill my head
I cannot sleep my minds a flight
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
If there are noises in the night
    A frighting shadow, flickering light
    Then I surrender unto sleep
Where clouds of dreams give second sight
What dreams may come both dark and deep
Of flying wings and soaring leap
    As I surrender unto sleep
    As I surrender unto sleep

My choir teacher's wife brought in their infant daughter in a carriage and placed her tenderly on the piano. She looked stressed and worn out and the baby looked fussy. We were all hanging out and they asked us to be quiet enough to let the baby sleep. They went into the office to talk. The baby grew fussy and started to whimper. Our choir very softly sang "Sleep" to her and by the end, we noticed the teachers standing behind us, teary eyed. The baby had fallen asleep. I will remember it forever

This is a perfect example of how strangers all over the world, from different cultures, races and religions can create something beautiful. Now if the rest of us can follow their example, the world woul be a better place for ALL of us to live in. We are all just people. Human beings that despite our differences are all part of the same family. I hope that one day we all, ALL OF US, can live in the harmony that was beautifully presented here. Thank you for the inspiration, and the HOPE.

Yes. It is late right now and I'm ready for sleep. My mind wandered into the heavenlies, picturing my Creator and his beautiful Orchestra of different peoples around the world finally being able to rest from their weariness of this planet and singing together in harmony...rest.
"After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

This is a seed of what we, all of us, on this earth, the dead, the unborn yet, and those of us here, can be. We are connected as depicted here, we don't know it. What a day when all of us sing as one like this. The world will be an Eden again. Thank you Eric.

Wow, four years ago this came out. I remember being in high school and my director was so excited to show us this beautiful piece of music. We were able to play AND sing this song. I will never forget that year and how everyone was thrilled to sing it as well as play it, something our high school band doesn't do. What a nice memory I came back to.

I have sung many songs, listen to many...and read about many. But...this song, it brought floods of tears to my eyes. I could not stop crying. To see the world, join in on something that has nothing to do with politics, or money or war. It was too good to be true, but here it plays before me, and all I can say is, pure joy, expressed love, heartrending emotions. Music is the gateway to new paths everywhere, and now, I want to go down more of them then ever before. Thank you Eric Whitacre.

I am pleased to see that there were many non-English speaking countries who took part. Mexico, Chile, Germany, Netherlands, China, etc. While there weren't many, it is powerful to note there are some. I believe there would be more, but there is a learning curve. Not necessarily with language, but with how the music was written.

my god. i was a part of this. my little bubble is in this video. and this was very shortly before i graduated high school. i thought i was participating in something that would go viral at the time, by a composer i loved. i thought it was so cool to have my voice immortalized in this... but 12 years later i wasn't prepared for the emotional gut punch it would bring. in a world that's punctuated by hate, some people got together from all around the world and united for this absolutely herculean effort... just to make music. and i think that's really, really cool.

I just discovered Eric Whitacre last week while listening to Morten Lauridsen. I am beyond words after listening to this. He is incredibly gifted at capturing emotion through voice and lyrics. I was so moved to tears the first time I listened to this that I searched for more of his work. His projects with virtual choirs are not only amazing technically, but more so for bringing thousands of voices together from around the world in peace and harmony...literally. His talents are part of our national heritage and a gift to anyone who listens.

I cried. Humankind is foolish. They can unite to sing, but cannot unite to bring world peace. This is a bittersweet beauty. It is a perennial flower, doomed to fade, but can be born again if they try, as is humanity. If humans try, if they come together, look what can come of it; beauty. Beauty beyond all else, that transcends all the hate and the prejudice and the war and the sword and gun, that can bring a light to the darkened, charred Earth, and can guide them to an age of happiness for all.

I just learned today that the original words to this song were supposed to be Robert Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". But due to copyrights being extended by 20 years, it was not actually in public domain for Eric to use. He got shut down by the Frost Estate, and the words were replaced with the current words written by Poet Charles Anthony Silvestri.
I know it's not true, but to me I like to think that happened so that the current words to this composition could be there to sing my mother to sleep.

Should do a virtual brass ensemble. If this is what thousands of voices sound like, I bet thousands of brass instruments would be a tremendously rich sound.
