    Hey man, rest the ferro rod right on the kindle, then place your knife's spine on it, maybe like 2 inches from the handle and at a 45 degree-ish angle so the spine corner will scrape the rod. Then just pull the rod towards you, leaving the knife in place. Make sure to put some pressure to really get some sparks out. Nice video, hope to see more.

      This is what I will try next time! I’ve heard it from a couple people. Thanks for the advice and trying to help a newcomer!

    Usually, they will replace the drone. So it should not be a problem. I see some have already told you about cotton balls, soaked in Vaseline. Also, make sure you have plenty of twigs to put on the fire 🔥 to keep it going. I had a pad for my Tundra that had ridges on the bottom to make the floor smooth to lay on. I used 2 exercise pads to lay on with my sleeping bag / pillow 😴. You will find out that each trip you will learn new thing to bring! Another awesome video! And it's great to see your subscriber list growing! As always, thanks for sharing your adventures!

    sweet...i got a '11 Tacoma with 5' foot bed and Leer topper. I am driving from Alaska to the lower 48 in May and camping along the way. First of this type of adventure in this rig. Got a "foot box" which actually allows for the tailgate to be left down and while covering that space, attaches on the bottom of the closed topper door. This allows for that little bit of extra space, although sleeping diagonal will work. I'll have to see how it works! Safe travels!!

    • @YouTubeHowTo
      @YouTubeHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! That extra space will work wonders! I did forget I had the cover on in the middle of the night and popped up and hit my head pretty hard lol. Your setup should do just fine! It may get hot in there if you get to the warmer areas. Safe travels to you as well!

    Cool video. Put the ferro rod closer to what you are attempting to light.

    Whooo! Pisgah looks like a beauty area. I'm happy to see you get the fire going with the ferro rod. For advice there, get closer. You want the rod right up to your tinder. Put the rod as close to the handle of the knife as possible and bear down with good force. Practice keeping a consistent angle and adjust that angle to find the point that works best. You want a good shower of sparks that continue to burn for a couple seconds. You'll get that with the right angle and enough pressure. Keeping the rod as close to your hand gives you the best control. Next, success requires a tinder that takes the sparks easily. Fibrous, dry material that burns readily is best. That's why the cotton balls lit right up. There are many sources of good natural tinder in the forest. Dry birch bark is excellent. Scrape the white side with the knife to make some fine, fibrous tinder that will light easily with the ferro rod then bend the end of the bark over into the flame or use a second piece. It burns great. Fatwood can be harvested from pine trees and scraped with the spine of your knife to make probably the best natural tinder you can get. Best to watch some videos that explain how to find and process it. Lastly, gather more material in each size. A big tinder bundle, a big pile of small dry twigs, a big pile of medium twigs then a big pile of kindling will help when the weather is not so good or dry wood is scarce. Then practice, practice, practice. Keep the videos coming man, I'm really enjoying them. I live in Canada and love watching content from the Carolinas especially Pisgah.

    Keep it up you will learn as far as your ferro rod you always need some kind of a fire starter such as cotton balls you might want to put vaseline on your cotton balls,,,,,don’t hold your ferro rod so high the closer to your fire starter you are the better you are put your cotton ball on a piece of wood put the end of the rod next to your cotton ball and strike

    Good job on the fire! I was thinking you should have brought some cotton balls, when you suddenly added them. I sometimes get a cotton ball and spread vaseline/petroleum jelly on the cotton ball and place a few in a ziploc bag for the trip. Put a cotton ball in your kindling and it will burn for at least two minutes, even in light rain.
