Awesome video! You helped me with my Pixel 3xl on discord and I've been enjoying it. Thank you so much for you help and great knowledge with everything! Happy rooting! Ohhimark!
FUCKIN' A MAN, thanks for getting me rooted again, after taking the OTA. I have an unlocked Pixel3 XL, and this worked like a charm! Updated and ROOTED. Subscribed!!! Cheers.
Another option for the drag and drop vs typing it in is if you hold shift and right click the item you can select "Copy as Path". That will just copy the absolute path to the file that you can then paste into cmd or powershell.
No worries and yes, it's not really the method of rooting that's the issue. It's Android 10 not letting you mount /system as R/W. So Magisk is probably your only chance, unless you wish to compile a ROM from source. :P
So this is the normal Magisk Manager, and you've flashed Magisk and have updated to Android 10? Try rebooting, if that doesn't work, clear data for the new Magisk app and see if that helps.
@@MaowDroid Yes, it was the normal Magisk Manager I had before Android 10. I looked online and someone commented, it was a bug v7.3.2 and I need to wait for an update. The problem is, I can't enable any of my root apps until an update is presented.
Keep trying the canary builds. Or try uninstalling all instances of Magisk Manager, flashing the stock boot.img from the factory image. Reboot and install the latest Canary Magisk Manager, reboot back into the bootloader and flash the patched boot image.
So I followed these instructions for the Pixel 3 but unfortunately I was unable to boot up. My phone attempted to boot twice but then it went back to the bootloader (saying the reason was "unable to boot boot.img" or something). I've tried a couple of methods prior to this... I did the method of flashing the factory image (using the flash.bat file but editing out "-w" so that my phone would not be wiped; which basically is a script of what you did in this video I think) but it didn't work. Same thing, tried to boot twice but then fail, going back to the bootloader. I also tried to ADB sideload the OTA file via the stock recovery and that also did not work. It would end up in a bootloop and try to boot up many times (at least 5) before I just gave up and forced it to load up in the bootloader again, and then flash the August firmware back on the phone. I've been reading online and there have been numerous people having similar issues and the only somewhat consistent issue seems to be factory reset prior to flashing either the factory image or taking the OTA. Really hoping there's a way to still keep the data without needing to reset the phone. I've only rooted with Magisk, no xposed framework or magisk modules.
Sorry for the late reply. Usually that shouldn't be the case, but I have been seeing people have their phones bootloop and unable to boot into the system for whatever reason it might be. Have you tried changing slots? And if you weren't able to boot up after the initial flash, perhaps you could try flashing the Pie images that you were on previously and see if you boot up there. I'd try this before changing slots, unless the slots swapped while you were flashing Android 10.
@@MaowDroid After posting my initial comment, I tried it where I flashed Android 10 to both slots, still didn't work. I can flash the August update of Android Pie no problem and have been doing so each time I try going to 10 and having it bootloop.

Hi! That's OK! You can certainly root again without losing data. Easy as pie. In fact, you can follow this video but just focus on the following parts: 1. Downloading the right factory image, match the build number you can find in Settings > About Phone 2. Download Magisk Manager Canary on your phone. 3. Copy the boot.img from the factory image to your phone. 4. Patch using Magisk Manager. 5. Copy the patched image to your PC. 6. Flash the patched boot.img.
If your phone can install the OTA (I presume you're already received the update via OTA), you can follow this guide: topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html#ota-installation Although you'll only be able to tell if you can install the update after it downloads and after you perform a few steps on the Magisk side.
Yep, works just the same! Ensure that you're set to install the beta (or higher) version of Magisk and follow the standard Magisk + OTA update guide. topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html#ota-installation
Great video. I performed your steps against my Pixel 3 XL and everything appeared to have worked correctly but it appears I don't have root. When I go to Magisk manager it indicates that Magisk isn't installed. If I try to install it from the Magisk manager I'm promoted with two options: download zip file or select and patch a file. What do you advise?
Update: The reason Magisk wasn't showing was because the "Manager" app was still on my phone. When I uninstalled it (like you said to do in the video) Magisk appeared in Magisk Manager and I had SuperUser and root privileges. Now I'm unable to edit my build.prop. The file doesn't save. I tried using buildprop editor as well as root file explorer. buidprop presents an error indicating "Error Saving build.prop". Root file explorer appears to save the file, but when I load it again, the edits aren't there. Can you see whether you can edit and save changes to your build.prop? Open the file post saving to see if the edits took. Thanks for all of your support.
Android Q has not made it possible to mount /system as R/W. You might have to use the PropHide Magisk Module to add and change your props for now. And I'm glad you got the other thing sorted out. Removing the hidden Magisk "Manager" app, then just installing Magisk Manager should have done it. :)
