    Wow, thanks man. Really appreciate it.
    I was surprised to see so many instructional videos and guides online that FAILED to clearly explain things step by step, until I came to your video.
    I almost bricked my phone yesterday too.
    Now, I am on the latest version of Android and your instructions were absolutely FLAWLESS.
    You've got a real talent for explaining things clearly in a step by step fashion.
    Let me send you a PayPal donation...
    P.S: The only thing I would improve is maybe the background. The green graph paper background is distracting and doesn't contrast well with the phone. So, a plain white background would be easier on the eyes.

      Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad it has been useful for you and easy to follow.
      About the background, I've been meaning to get something a bit more plain, and you're right, it kinda hurts my eyes after a while haha.

    Hey great stuff you got there. I have been following your root tutorial on Pixel phones since last year. I'm still waiting for your new video on root tutorial for Pixel 4 XL. 🙂

      Thanks Fahim! I don't know if I'll be getting the Pixel 4, if I can get one that's on a very good deal, I might.
      But right now, you can unlock the bootloader and use Magisk Manager to patch the stock boot.img from the factory image to root.

    Do not upgrade to Android 10 on the Pixel 2 XL. I've been experiencing battery and performance issues, as well as very strange and random bootlooping. Just be cautious.

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried factory resetting? That would give it a fresh start and then you'll be able to know for sure that it's software. :)

    • @S3ven4
      @S3ven4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaowDroid It first began boot looping about a week ago. I was able to get it to stop, and I decided to factory reset. But just last night, it randomly rebooted itself and went into a series of unlimited bootlooping, and it didn't stop until I sideloaded the factory image. So I've really got no idea why it does that, but as of right now, it's working without an issue.

    Great videos with clear instructions! Quick question: Can I use this method to Root and Unrooted Pixel 2 XL? Or must it already be rooted? I have a Pixel 2 XL running Android 10 which I would like to root.

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main difference is having the bootloader already unlocked, so if you can do that you can follow this video to root essentially.

    HALP!
    I've successfully used your instructions about 5 months ago (and even sent in a PayPal donation!) but for some reason, the first step doesn't work for me.
    I get the following error:
    $bash: fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-taimen-tmz30m.img
    target didn't report max-download-size
    sending 'bootloader' (36356 KB)...
    FAILED (remote: unknown command)
    finished. total time: 0.000s
    This is on a Pixel 2XL - Any tips/advice?
    My bootloader is unlocked and phone is rooted.

      Hi Dilanka, thanks for your comment and support!
      I'm guessing you haven't changed your computer either right?
      Try the ususal, reboot back into the bootloader, replug your phone and try again.
      Also if you try force the slot to flash (e.g.: fastboot flash bootloader_a [bootloader.img]) does it give you an error like "device does not support slots" or "invalid slot", or the same "remote: unknown command"?
      If you haven't updated in 5 months, try flashing last month's factory image bootloader instead, and perhaps a quick way to get the bootloader updated is sideloading the full OTA from: developers.google.com/android/ota
      You will have to flash Magisk after, but I'd try that after you let it boot up once first.

  • @kalia213
    @kalia213 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did everything you showed in the video but after rebooting on the last step (after sideloading magisk), it just bootloops. Also getting a "your device is corrupt" msg. Im guessing its the partitions, it was selected as B and when i try to flash again, its selected as A .

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The corruption message is the one that you see on boot up and it's the red warning triangle? Or is it the screen that says cannot load system, you data may be corrupt. With the options to try again or factory reset.
      Try flashing the factory images again on the current slot.

    I have a unrelated question: Ive installed cstark's gcam 7.2 on my Pixel 2 and am now wondering if the magisk module for >4 sec exposure time will do anything about astrophotography. Currently the max shutter time without the module is one minute, whereas the Pixel 4's is four minutes.
    So if I root my Pixel 2 and install the module, will it be able to shutter for four minutes just like the Pixel 4 does?

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I installed the GCam mod, and that long exposure module, and it bumped up the astro timer from 1:01 minutes to 2:30 minutes, and now around 2 minutes.
      So the mod does do something for that, but not to the degree of 4 minutes.

      Is that with the red warning triangle and you can pause boot by pressing power, or is it like the one in the video that's orange? If it's orange, it's normal.
      If it's red, you may have to flash the factory images again and/or wipe your data.

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TWRP might not work properly, I'd recommend checking out my latest video for the Pixel 2 which will not use TWRP as a part of the updating process (due to potiential bootlooping).

  • @MikeTrieu
    @MikeTrieu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You probably lost TWRP data decrypt because you flashed the Android 10 system image directly. If you only apply OTA from Pie, it's fine. This has been confirmed by TWRP lead dev, Dees_Troy.

    Hi, MaowDroid. I followed your guide last month and everything went well, thanks a lot! :) I did the same with November’s update but I get a bootloop (I solved this issue going back to the last month update). I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Is this method also good with the November’s update?
    P.S. Maybe someone else already reported it to you but, if not, with the alternative method of "copy and paste”, that you show in this video, you could try to delete the quotes " " in the path; maybe it could work

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it should still be good, could it be your modules? I've also had a problem where the phone wouldn't boot past the Google word logo, I just had to force reboot it again.
      It should work as is, as if your path contained spaces it would require the " " quotes. :)

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could! It won't be anytime soon unfortunately.
      I can do a video about patching the boot.img using Magisk manager (which is how we need to root our Pixel 3 on Android 10).
      th-cam.com/video/4Nduxj7ry3o/w-d-xo.html
      In this video, go through the Downloads, Extraction, Preparting Magisk Patched Boot Image and 14:20 Flash patched boot.img to re-root; sections.

      @@MaowDroid hello, thanks for the info but not sure if that would help me. I tried to do the OTA method from Android 9 to 10 and I got stuck in a boot loop. I had to reset my phone and magisk/root was gone unfortunately.
      Would you have a previous video which might work if I'm on Android 10 now?

    • @MaowDroid
      @MaowDroid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh so you've already unlocked the bootloader?
      You just need to patch the boot.img via Magisk Manager (which I outlined above). It's also mentioned in official documentation: topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#boot-image-patching
      Perhaps you were using the older version of Magisk < 19.4 which did not support Android 10. With v20.0, it has support for Android 10, and especially for Pixel 3 devices.
