Bro, the JJK soundtrack has been living rent-free in my brain ever since I heard self-embodiment of perfect and working overtime. Season 2 basically made it one of the all-time greats, imo. Delirious, Physical Prowess and What Was Entrusted to Me STILL give me goosebumps. ❤️
i totally agree i love all those tracks but tracks like prepare yourself, arrogance, if i am with you, and you better get strong all hit me heavily because of the emotions and meaning behind the songs, it just makes you feel like you’re living it you know.
I know right???? I've been dying to see people discuss about the amazing soundtracks in this season. I searched all over and couldn't find any fruitful discussion
If you want to hear more from the composer you should check some of his bands/projects! he had a math rock band called haisuinonasa, a math rock and pop idol girl group (sora tob sakana, they made the high score girl opening) and currently has a band called siraph, he also composed the houseki no kuni (land of the lustrous) opening!
21:02 it’s taken from the arc’s name-“Hidden Inventory/Premature Death”-the hidden inventory likely referring to Toji’s worm curse and the premature death being Riko and Haibara (literally) and Geto (figuratively)
I think it's also about Gojo. He loses the comraderie that he had with his friends (especially Geto) and is basically forced to become The Strongest (a very lonely title). It marks the death of the version of Gojo that believed in others and that was happy with his place in the world. Almost like a death of innocence.
also on the 3 years of overflowing youth, the nostalgic theme that played was exactly one minute long. it represented the time that gojo was standing there and the conditions that were needed to be met in order to seal someone in the prison realm.
Premature is referring to "premature death", the death of Geto as a jujustu sorcerer. Edit: Fun fact that I've noticed, the CS:GO accept matchmaking sound is in with rage lol. (Around 42 seconds into the song).
1:09:57 yes, but.. imo the opening soundtrack playing while yuji is crying captures how in this scene he is not even allowed to grief in peace.. as his regret and sorrow comes pouring out uncontrollably, someone is laughing maniacally in the background.....
the wait was worth it also shoutout to no hesitation which didn't get used at all despite being one of the best tracks in the ost, whenever that gets used the wait will have been worth it too
hi so i'm autistic and one of my big special interests is soundtracks! so like video game soundtracks, and now anime soundtracks. JJK s2's ost is so so amazing but i barely see any appreciation for it and when i saw this video in my recommended it was like seeing god i can't lie. i love this analysis so much, and it makes me so happy to see people look deeply into the soundtrack like i do, which is surprisingly rare in this fandom. seriously when you mentioned all the songs with gojo's leitmotif scattered in it, i screamed because it made me so excited!! i love things like this tysm for this video
If you want to hear more from the composer you should check some of his bands/projects like haisuinonasa, sora tob sakana (they made the high score girl opening) and siraph, he also composed the houseki no kuni (land of the lustrous) opening :D i am not diagnosed (yet) but i’m sure i’m on the spectrum and I've been COMPLETELY obsessed with the JJK soundtrack and terui yoshimasas work since last year 😭😭
I could be wrong about this, but that long droning sound at the beginning of "Still Unaware" sounds a lot like the beginning of the song "Toji Fushiguro" which is literally Toji's theme and we hear multiple times throughout Hidden Inventory and Shibuya. I think it's interesting to have that begin that scene, then when it flashes back and Toji finally feels some remorse or sympathy for his son, it changes to that brighter more hopeful piano. Showing how at the end of it all he finally looked past his life as the sorcerer killer, and looked more towards being a father.
One detail you missed that I feel is very significant is that in Metamorphosis (Awakened Mahito’s theme) that the last section of it has the same tragic/calamitic leitmotif as Thunderclap (Sukuna’s theme). Which symbolizes Mahito becoming another natural calamity or danger like Sukuna.
So glad to see detailed analysis of this incredible soundtrack. I love that you focus on the emotional implications of the music instead of getting into music theory. You nailed it, peak youtube!
Absolutely beautiful, I'm a soundtrack enjoyer as well and genuinely believe these soundtracks deserve more love, I don't even know how many times I have listened to this seasons soundtracks on repeat, especially sukuna's themes, as just as you said, he changes EVERYTHING, and to quote jogo's words, it's not just his presence but the soundtrack as well just personified the feeling of being faced with an unconquerable overwhelming evil
till JJK, i haven't been so enamored with anime music since Yu Yu Hakusho and Cell Saga DBZ. and the JJK editing team also deserves *HUGE* props with how the chorography and shots perfectly blend with the music, most exceptionally executed during the Yuji vs Choso fight
Im pretty sure Nobara's theme is actually based on a song called ''Liar'' from the season 1 OST which was only used once in season 1 I think, in episode 17. Interestingly while that episode does heavily feature Nobara, it was used not for her but in instead in the flashback scene from Maki and Mai, Anyway great video!
FINALLY the jjk soundtrack has been SO insane, from Memories That Didn't Exist/The Man Aoi Todo, Your Battle is My Battle, Fight Again, Self-Embodiment Of Perfection, Hollow Purple, Fight Alongside, If I Am With You to fucking Thunderclap and Malevolent Shrine, its SO good whether its just pure action music or actual malicious chanting
holy fucking shit ive found someone who loves OSTs and music in general in media as much as i do. ever since i became a fan of jjk the ops eds and the osts all have me in a chokehold. listening to tracks like searching for riko delirious thunderclap and malevolent shrine makes me feral over how much of a fucking banger they all are. literally saw this vid recommended to me and i instantly clicked on it. i enjoy watching u analyze each track in depth sonically and with regards to how they are used in different scenes. seeing u gush over all those tracks the same way i did and still do makes me rly happy. amazing video i loved every second of it
Happy im not the only one going actually feral over posts, also even if u don't watch the anime, aots posts are so peak, id recommend looking into bauklotze (the newer one with vocals,) akutsi no requiem, and barricades. Requiem is an ending, but a very fitting one, and the other 2 are just soundtracks from the show
@@EepyGirlLava i actually have all the aot ost albums saved on my spotify i listen to all of them!! my fav is defo the s3p2 osts those remixes of previous themes w/ new vocals are fucking fire
1:12:57 It is also a variation of an S1 track called "Liar" which is the track of the sisters Maki and Mai. I loved the video, finally I found someone who pays attention to the soundtrack in general! Keep making them, personally I would like one of Frieren or Vinland Saga.
21:02 idk why it's called that, but the 'Gojo's backstory arc' is called Premature Death, so it might be referencing that. The old Geto died 'prematurly' and the scene with the cult is one of the first we see of the new Geto.
the fight for geto vs toji is SOOOOOOOO DAMN FITTING, hearing you explain it makes it so much better, the build up from the 2nd section into geto calling out his curse dragon and toji shooting him with dead accuracy rly shows that toji isn't someone to treat lightly, it rly sets the scene and make the fight that much better
Fun fact: Cannibalism is legal in the US although the gathering of said bodies for consumption is the hard part for cannibalism. Therefore, if you are put into a dangerous scenario at risk of starving to death, it is legal to consume your friend (cursed spirit) and survive.
this is genuinely the most best and personal fave youtube videos ive watched. like you really just get this soundtrack in the same way i do and that ive rarely seen in the jjk community for some reason
Omg someone who loves listening to soundtracks as much as I do! I love JJKs soundtrack. You put a lot of thoughts I had about it into words. As for why it’s called premature. The Japanese title of the Gojo past arc translates to jade that holds potential/ jade that breaks. The first part refers to Gojo (jade that holds potential) and the second to Geto (jade that break). I’m not sure why the translator uses hidden inventory but I think premature death refers to the jade that breaks part of the title which refers to Geto’s fall specifically. The song play when Geto decides to double down on his BS so title refers to Geto’s metaphorical ”premature death”. Also, and I’m extrapolating here, the English title for the arc seems to maybe extend the premature death to everyone in the arc which is true in a way. Everyone dies that day. Riko, Toji, and Kuroi literally; Gojo and Geto metaphorically. So the song may represent when all of the repercussions of the day set in, especially for Geto.
Everyone gives the show’s animation so much praise and overlook everything else, so glad to see someone put in so much time and effort into explaining how well done the music was. Great video, subbed!
Bro the amount of My Hero Academia soundtracks that cause me to straight up hallucinate the scenes they're from in my head is crazy, thank you for acknowledging this phenomenon 😆 I've been sleeping on JJK's OST and I will rectify this the next time I log in to spotify. I don't even watch the show but I'm going through the albums asap.
This video through both your great storytelling and deconstruction of these soundtracked has shown me musical creativity and depth within myself that I haven't seen in ages! Thanks for putting so much effort into this and all your other works Heralen
hollow purple your battle is my battle are the two jjk OSTs that got me hooked and I have quite a few faves. But to name a few of em: hollow purple, your battle is my battle, self embodiment, hidden inventory, with rage, delirious and remember/ resolve. While watching jjk (and any anime in general), it’s so fun to listen to the OSTs and how they amplify the scenes!!
thank you for touching on the topic of the soundtrack literally not even the fans have been discussing about it the most important thing in an anime, to me, is the soundtrack and the usage and this is one of the main reasons why JJK has slipped itself into my top 5 from the themes, characters, and the music i love an emotional roller coaster and the soundtrack is a great reflection of that
Still Unaware is a beautiful evolution of the song Toji Fushiguro. Toji Fushiguro plays a few times throughout the Hidden Inventory arc, but most memorably, when Gojo drops his guard and gets pierced in the neck by Toji. The haunting synths of the song permeate the air as Gojo lies in a pool of his own blood. In Still Unaware, it begins awfully similar to Toji Fushiguro, but instead of the haunting synths that we're used to associating with Toji, we get a soft and delicate set of piano notes, tragic ones at that. This somber set of tones eases our stress of Toji attacking his son as he comes to realize who he's fighting. This is Toji's evolution. Before he died the first time, the final thoughts he had were about his son, and ultimately, it was his words spoken to Gojo in death that caused Megumi to be intercepted by Gojo and taken away from the Zenin clan. He saved his son, but he also put his son in the position to be saved in the first place. He is a tragic figure, and though simple, his evolution is beautiful.
It is absolutely LIBERATING to see someone with as much of a love for anime soundtracks (or soundtracks as a whole for that matter) as me that go beyond the surface level of just the opening or ending themes. I remember I tried to put together a tier list with some friends based on countless different anime and their soundtracks. That was when I realized how many people took the background soundtracks in anime and shows for granted and just thought about the openings.
I dont know if you've ever heard about it, but the soundtrack for the game Ultrakill is absolutely amazing as well, I really recommend checking it out, my favorite songs from it are "Versus", "Tenebre Rosso Sangue", Centaur - War without reason" and "Versus". I'd love to see you react to them as well, but as long as you just check them out I'll be happy, also I barely ever hear anyone talking extensively about the jjk soundtrack so you won my subscription
At around 23:19 you can hear a bit of mahito, i just noticed it now but thats EXTREMELY similar to self embodiment of perfection and i dont think its a coincidence considering who he’s fighting
I'm so glad you made this video! Every time I listened to the ost I caught so many interesting details, especially the more subtle character leitmotifs, and I wished someone would make a video talking about it, so thank you! This was a joy to watch! Now here are the answers I tried giving for your questions plus some comments (sorry, it got a bit long): 21:03 "Premature" is a nod to the title of the second part of this arc, named "Premature Death". Gojo's past arc is divided in two parts as it's title shows: "Hidden Inventory/Premature Death", and the episode titles tell us which part we're in. The first four episodes are "Hidden Inventory" parts 1 to 4, and episode 5, aka the "Geto goes through it" arc, is called "Premature Death". Now I'm not quite sure why give that name to this specific track, but since it plays in Geto's last scene in this arc about him, and the scene itself is what we could call the "conclusion" to Geto's transformation, I think it's pretty fitting. 32:02 I'm pretty sure (or hope) this will become Fake Geto's theme, or at the very least leitmotif, It was also used when he showed up to "help" Mahito, and I think it fits this character very well. 48:50 I think they did it because Yuuji's ear was cut, maybe it was from the attack whooshing past his ear so fast that it muffled his hearing for a bit or maybe the pain/shock from the cut did it. Also, I may be imagining it but listening with headphones, it seems sliiightly more muffled in the right ear, where Yuuji was hit. 52:51 that "unsettling, disorienting thing" is the beginning of Toji's actual theme (track 5 "Toji Fushiguro"), with what seems like a metallic sound added to it to make it more disorienting, showing that the real Toji is regaining control. 1:07:17 I would like to offer another way to interpret this. It sounds like the percussion instruments and rhythms you'd hear at a Buddhist ceremony in a Buddhist temple/shrine. Malevolent Shrine itself derives it's appearance from a Buddhist temple and in Japan, as far as I could tell, the temples that still worship Ryomen Sukuna seem to be Buddhist temples. (slight spoilers) In the manga, we see a flashback of Sukuna attending the harvest festival in a Shinto Shrine, but the religious nature of these festivals seems to have stemmed from Buddhism (in Japan the two religions sort of coexist so it makes sense for Sukuna to be associated with both). So instead of invoking a primal, warring nature, I would argue it instead invokes a godly nature of something that should be worshipped, which goes in line with the domain expansion Malevolent Shrine being "a truly divine technique". If you read this far, thanks a lot 😊 And btw The Sukuna choir has got to be my fave 😆Before Sukuna showed up in season 2 I was crossing my fingers hoping that they would keep it. Sukuna's theme was one of my favorite tracks from the season 1 ost and I'm so glad they kept the essentials while expanding it. Edit: I was writing this comment as I watched the video, so some of these things were probably already mentioned in the comments, so sorry if it seems like I'm repeating others.
Your interpretation of Malevolent Shrine definitely hit the spot! When i first heard the soundtrack, the percussion reminds me of the sound of a bell tolling at a shrine!
im going to absolutely spam some notes in this comment so please conversate with me below, or ignore me, thank you! in vs toji: the thematic comparison you mention on with rage is exactly tied to jujutsu sorcerers as a whole, not just the fights in this arc, as everyone is trained by nature to control their negative emotions (rage) and use the cursed energy efficiently and effectively rather than blowing it all off and spiraling. actually so crazy genius, ive always been fascinated by that section and how it somehow always worked in the SEVEN times they used it in goodbye geto: i dont know if im remembering exactly correctly, but the name of episode 5 (mini arc) premature death, is a weird translation thing, and in japanese the meaning is a lot more pronounced. im pretty sure it refers to the premature death of talent, in this case, geto, turning evil and eventually dying before reaching his full potential. you can afflict premature death to so many things in this arc too, such as their friendship, gojo's death, amani's death, ect ect. but the song called premature is just referring to the arc name in gojo gets sealed: with rage again!! doing exactly what i described before. in the moment gojo is supposed to be (as being explained by the spirits) losing his composure, and he does exactly what the song does with the C section and uses it masterfully, as he is gojo after all. the rage in his voice as he chants his domain, the absolute shock, such a good scene. realizing now that its important the song is "with" rage, because its not pure rage, its just as intended, with rage. for 3 years of youth overflowing, its specifically referring to the condition of the prison realm where a minute must pass within a captee's mind, and with how fast gojo's brain moves and how shocking it is to see your dead best friend again, that whole 3 years overflows and effectively gets him captured. in yuji vs choso: im already excited this is my favorite part of the season 2 music arsenal, but before i get to that i just wanna mention how crazy it is yet again that they can use with rage so many times, it work perfectly each time, and still not get old. also, never noticed mechamaru's theme in this fight that is so sick, went straight over my head, and ALSO never noticed the gojo motif in red scale which is weird... but OKAY, RESOLVE OH MY GOD. literally my favorite musical moment of season 2. on that fateful JJK tuesday, already hyped to see the adaptation of this fight, hearing that familiar horn melody blast in gave me CHILLS man, and the drums again with the twist, sent me over the top i was geeking for days. its so nicely done and ties in so amazingly perfect with the lore and continues to serve the lore even in chapters coming out today (iykyk, if we get a third version of remember/resolve whenever tf its adapted i will have a stroke). you didnt really mention the thematics of it, but the choice is specifically this song because choso is fighting for his brothers from that episode, and is foreshadowing choso being yuji's brother at the same time. such an amazing callback, it pains me that a lot of the reaction channels i watched paid the music no mind (some picked it up at the drums but thats a lot more obvious ofc) okay ill shut up now. in zombie daddy: just a small note, i absolutely adore the section of the song that the cowbell comes in. so modern gigachad meme sounding, it works so well and whether or not they included that because of the phonk genre type thing or they just thought it sounded cool, its so good. SUKUNA: i love the phrase "the sukuna choir" its so sick how they gave him not a theme, not a motif, but a set of instruments; the dissonant choir, the echoey wooden drum sounds, the echoey raw bells, all of it with the ancient japanese flavor, its so perfect for him as a reincarnated overwhelming antagonist. thunderclap is SOOOOO GOOD, the second those drums started ripping i was HEADBANGING, it was so perfect i was LOCKED in. all the melodies across all the sukuna songs are crafted so insanely well, the emotion and the haunting mixed just right, masterful. OH MY GOD YOU NOTICED THE ASHES ON THE FIRE PART I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE LOL. ugh the choir coming in on the domain expansion, truly iconic. anyways FUUUUUGA obligatory RIP to nanami. 💔 in right and wrong: nobara's theme is amazing im so sad we only hear it once, it better come back in the coming seasons. reminds me of some sort of day theme from a grassy level in a modern day sonic game. chefs kiss. watching reactors' faces shrivel up as they hear the music slow down and distort was so (evilly) fulfilling as a manga reader, it couldnt have been much better of a way to signal the situation's gone from awful to horrible to devastating yet again. the chair metaphor as a callback yet again to the final episode of season 1, telling yuji about how she only has so many seats in her life... ugh i miss her. anyways 👏 TODODOOOOOO i LOVE that man and i LOVE his theme that comes in, ugh it was everything i could ever wanted. and to top if off the absolute BOPPER of a version of boogie woogie that comes in is just peak yet again. tears in my eyes every single time i watch the first yuji black flash... "ill make sure i take on your share of suffering too, nanamin." TEARS. another abrupt switch but only fucking todo would get this kind of treatment in a show. they coordinated the direction team, animators, AND composers to casually come up with an anime opening song comparable to mainstream standard for a schizo domain expansion. love it. no words. though i don't dislike a single musical choice in the yuji vs mahito episodes, im truly saddened no hesitation didn't make it into the fight, as for some reason it was in the gojo past OST and never used (ive been told a small segment was used but i could never find it) throughout the entire season. that song is amazing and i think the energy would fit so well in the fight, obviously not as a climax moment but as part of the inbetween action segment/s. the end: once again, ugh, hurt. the melody on all 3 versions is just perfection, most definitely my favorite from the series, whether its slow and somber, or loud and triumphant ITS NOT RIGHT OR WRONG ITS NOT RIGHT OR WROOO OOO OOOONG, peak. i didnt even know the final song wasnt released, lets call it thematic genius as it symbolizes the dark that our main cast is left in, with nowhere to run or hide, and having more information fed to them leaving them more confused than ever. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO i loved this video sm thank you, i took the title so crazy literally and i hope you dont mind an essay in your comments. i resonate with your words at the end, and though its been years and im still only ankle deep into anime, i love exploring this culture and im so excited for whats to come. i have my eyes out for more jujutsu kaisen, chainsaw man, and eventually hopefully maybe sakamoto days. big hopes for good musics on the way 🤞 love the content i may or may not visit all your other videos here soon (its 4:30am as im typing this) and yeah thank you again please give me an A+ on this comment bye bye now
Amazing video! I'm glad theres a in depth analysis of this stuff cuz I also love nerding out about OSTs. One thing I noticed is that "Your Battle is My Battle" also played when Megumi and Yuji were fighting together. That was a great way to reinforce their friendship
I absolutely love the OSTs for Hidden Inventory Arc. I already kinda liked music in anime but the music in Hidden Inventory Arc really struck a cord with me and find it all so beautiful.
Sukuna's theme ( not mahoraga one) creates an eerie feeling, you really understand the maliciousness of the character just by hearing it, the choir one is just on another lvl
THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR THIS. I was looking for something on the soundtrack because I just finished the anime and jesus christ, the soundtrack was one of the highlights. like there are SO many songs from the soundtrack in my liked playlist that i just put on and imagine the scenes. they're so powerful. ty for this amazing food
Your video formatting is so joyful to watch man, you’re funny as hell too. Genuinely tricked me into watching a fucking ost video for one and a half hours.
A personal favorite soundtrack of mine is from Re:Zero. Each ost is extremely unique and about 90% of them have immense meaning behind them. My favorite ost out of all of them however has to be Requiem of Silence, one of the best ost’s out there.
1:12:59 'Jujutsu Sorcerer Nobara Kugisaki', I swear sounds exactly like the track 'The twins quick' from Haikyuu season 4 (Literally 28 seconds into it is where to look for the Haikyuu one.) You wouldn't know they were from two different animes. Then there's another track from Haikyuu season 4 as well, 'Targeting Kenma' which the piano is ridiculously similar to JJK's 'Arrogance'. 18:29 I haven't seen anyone mention it so this is the perfect video to share this with.
I have NEVER seen JJK, don't even know what the plots about, but this video was really good at explaining what each song meant to convey and its purpose. I definitely have to agree on how good it is!
This was such a good video! It deserves so much more attention! Im also happy I wasnt the only one that loves the OST so much too. I feel the music and how its used is very overlooked and people just think it of as some generic shonen OST. But JKK literally has one of my fav anime osts and its used sooo well throughout the show. Awesome vid!
Bro... I CANNOT get enough with "Entrusted" (1:16:34). From beginning to end it has an mazing buildup with a beautiful drop, not to mention the reference to the melody of Boogie Woogie. And then the OUTRO?! LORD TAKE ME NOW FOR I HAVE FAINTED. Literally my top 1 song in my spotify for the last 2 months
I was obsessed with both S1 and S2 OSTs for the latter half of last year frfr S2 with youtubers remixes before the official released then it did released it was like falling in love with S2 all over again. And omg im glad you started with Limited Cursed Technique! I loved the Jazz feel to it and it absolutely slaps to Gojo personality, as you said it follows him throughout the season. The whole image is beautiful with the music. Anyways definitely my favorite ❤ ofc there are other bangers... omg "Still Unaware" to me was similar to "If I am with you" but Tojis theme. Theres alot to comment but Sukuna theme reminded me of Nier... like when it was summon to the real world where the snow ash killed all humans and replicant begins, like bells but not theyre the steel drums. It gives that unholiness that is Sukuna and destruction.
Dude yes! Malevolent Shrine is so fucking awe-inspiring. It sounds so unbelievably apocalyptic and eldritch. I feel like my speakers are being invaded by a being from another universe (like Mahoraga!). I’m obsessed with it.
I think my favorite use of the piano section of "With Rage" was when Geto was reaching for Toji's cursed spirit. It's what I think of whenever I hear that part, although the song in general really fits that fight.
I’m a little late to this video but I LOVE the jjk soundtrack so much!!!! Hearing someone talking about it makes me feel sane lol 😅 my favourite artist who featured on the first seasons ost is Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and I really love the commercial break songs (JUJUTSU KAISEN and Eradicate), but my favourite song has gotta be the words that came from inside my gut, it’s so well made!!!! Excuse my blabbering lol, but I love your video!!!
i was literally freaking out about the soundtrack the other day omg it's genuinely an orchestral masterpiece the amount of emotion it conveys in the scenes they play
This was an amazing video as a music lover and allowed me to connect with this soundtrack better than I would have been able to on my own. Thank you for your hard work. I'm sure this was ALOT to edit and create.
It's got masterpiece written all over it. Such a unique & outstanding ost. My favorite will always be 3 years of youth. The sadness of seeing your dead best friend being used as a puppet. Gojo went through too much man. Almost as much as yuji
"Premature", to me, is called like that because of Amanai's *premature* death caused by Toji, symbolizing both how it was something that could be prevented and was also what kick-started the downward spiral that Geto went through.
I just finished your video and absolutely loved how you broke down and highlighted aspects of the OST I never thought of. If you liked the OST for Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren’s also got amazing soundtracks of its own. I’m only halfway through but it’s been one hell of an emotional roller coaster.
My favorite is still “Physical Prowess”, (that one that played when Toji kicked th shit out of Dagon) or “The Scariest” the one that played in season 1 when Gojo fought Jogo
I´m so glad to hear someone talk about this OST with such care and passion, that´s something that was´really missing in YT. I´m studying music to be a composer and I learned a lot from this video, ty!
I'm going to be replaying this video so much, GOSH I've been looking for more people to be gushing about the soundtrack just as much as I have been!! It's one of the first things I noticed (apart from animation) going into season 2 compared to season 1, just how tightnit, more purposeful, and thematically appropriate each track was, while repurposing iconic motifs from earlier. Season 1's ost has grown on me but still, it was a bit jarring at first lol. Anyways the Sukuna trio of songs will always be so perfect to me, plus the Yuji v Choso fight and Nobara's theme. Really all themes you spoke about are so good, but those are some standouts to me :] I am one who thought the OP in Yuji's moment was honestly kinda fitting, made it seem like he was almost being ridiculed and I didn't even question it till later. I do think maybe adding more somber, creepy ambience noises would've made me a little more unsettled, but I don't think that's what they were aiming for lol
Maybe it’s just me but the fact that no one talks about the song Memories blows my mind Which first plays during Choso’s memory Jogo’s death Kugisaki’s memory before she leaves the train station. Miwa talking to Mechamaru on the train to Shibuya That song really brings nostalgia, loss, happiness, regret and realisation all into one. This song needs to be spoken about more.
Bro i am so glad i wasnt the only one tweaking over the jjk soundtrack
right bro, genuinely tweaking on how good the music direction of this show is.
Been listening to it for a month now
ong I was waiting for the entire soundtrack to drop on Spotify after the anime ended
Same

it represented the time that gojo was standing there and the conditions that were needed to be met in order to seal someone in the prison realm.
That's crazy
Premature is referring to "premature death", the death of Geto as a jujustu sorcerer.
Edit: Fun fact that I've noticed, the CS:GO accept matchmaking sound is in with rage lol. (Around 42 seconds into the song).
It also refers to Riko dying so young.
@@clankennon8253 Nah it doesn't. The premature death arc is the few chapters after her death covering primarily Geto and his downfall.
@@EdenHamilton it does to Riko too, to Gojo's almost "death", to Satoru and Suguru's relationship premature death
@@EdenHamiltonIt is the death of innocence, the end of blue summer.
that little clicking sound??? i've been trying to figure that out for weeks, you're a goat
5:30 YOU NOTICED IT.. lowkey was freaking out when i realized all big Gojo moments have songs that all share that tune
Nothing I love more than listening to someone talk about something they genuinely love and care about
1:08:40 "The choir sounds like they're crying" THAT IS SO PERFECT AHHH
I Like the fact In the full song of "Climax Jumping" Takada sings Todo's actual theme near the end of the song.
1:09:57 yes, but.. imo the opening soundtrack playing while yuji is crying captures how in this scene he is not even allowed to grief in peace.. as his regret and sorrow comes pouring out uncontrollably, someone is laughing maniacally in the background.....
Right, it is almost as if the music symbolizes Sukuna's reveling in the destruction and his delight in Yuji's reaction.
the wait was worth it
also shoutout to no hesitation which didn't get used at all despite being one of the best tracks in the ost, whenever that gets used the wait will have been worth it too
hi so i'm autistic and one of my big special interests is soundtracks! so like video game soundtracks, and now anime soundtracks. JJK s2's ost is so so amazing but i barely see any appreciation for it and when i saw this video in my recommended it was like seeing god i can't lie. i love this analysis so much, and it makes me so happy to see people look deeply into the soundtrack like i do, which is surprisingly rare in this fandom. seriously when you mentioned all the songs with gojo's leitmotif scattered in it, i screamed because it made me so excited!! i love things like this tysm for this video
why did you have to mention you are autistic?
If you want to hear more from the composer you should check some of his bands/projects like haisuinonasa, sora tob sakana (they made the high score girl opening) and siraph, he also composed the houseki no kuni (land of the lustrous) opening :D
i am not diagnosed (yet) but i’m sure i’m on the spectrum and I've been COMPLETELY obsessed with the JJK soundtrack and terui yoshimasas work since last year 😭😭
@@vulmere NO WAY i love the hnk opening sm! i'll def check those out tysm

What does being autistic have to do with any of that😭
That brief comparison to that AOT track literally was on my mind for so long dude, thank you for mentioning that!! 😭
Pls send the timestamp for this 😭

2:00 in thunderclap goes hard bro
Best song by far
No Hesitation is by far my favorite piece of season 2 holy fuck what a masterpiece
And yet THEY NEVER PLAYED IT
@@saminates2002 yup thats tragic
So glad to see detailed analysis of this incredible soundtrack. I love that you focus on the emotional implications of the music instead of getting into music theory. You nailed it, peak youtube!
Thanks so much 🥹
ah yes, an hour and an half long video about jjk music.
exactly what i was looking for, ty yt.
Whenever songs have an opera chorus its meant to symbolize some kind of holiness unknown imo so I totally get it
till JJK, i haven't been so enamored with anime music since Yu Yu Hakusho and Cell Saga DBZ. and the JJK editing team also deserves *HUGE* props with how the chorography and shots perfectly blend with the music, most exceptionally executed during the Yuji vs Choso fight
@@r1tzie_rino I cannot agree more, those are some of my favorite parts as well :)
Thank you for the shout-out 🎶🤘
Thank you for all the great analysis content! Huge inspiration :)
The resolve song playing during the yuji choso fight is ✨peak✨
1:12:57 It is also a variation of an S1 track called "Liar" which is the track of the sisters Maki and Mai. I loved the video, finally I found someone who pays attention to the soundtrack in general! Keep making them, personally I would like one of Frieren or Vinland Saga.
As far as I remember there is another variation, called "Beyond Sacrifice" timestamp 00:49
@@BangNoer24 Maybe, it only sounds at the Junpei moment.
21:02 idk why it's called that, but the 'Gojo's backstory arc' is called Premature Death, so it might be referencing that. The old Geto died 'prematurly' and the scene with the cult is one of the first we see of the new Geto.
Resolve along with the ost playing during Getwo’s monologue at the end are my favorite pieces this season
the fight for geto vs toji is SOOOOOOOO DAMN FITTING, hearing you explain it makes it so much better, the build up from the 2nd section into geto calling out his curse dragon and toji shooting him with dead accuracy rly shows that toji isn't someone to treat lightly, it rly sets the scene and make the fight that much better
OMG PHYSICAL PROWESS MAKES ME WANT TO CRY 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏
"Just a very very brief video"
but in all seriousness GREAT video, analysis, editing, and etc. super entertaining to watch!
💀
Bro the amount of My Hero Academia soundtracks that cause me to straight up hallucinate the scenes they're from in my head is crazy, thank you for acknowledging this phenomenon 😆
I've been sleeping on JJK's OST and I will rectify this the next time I log in to spotify. I don't even watch the show but I'm going through the albums asap.
This video through both your great storytelling and deconstruction of these soundtracked has shown me musical creativity and depth within myself that I haven't seen in ages! Thanks for putting so much effort into this and all your other works Heralen
37:13 OH MY GOD DRUMROLL TONY MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I LOVE HIS VIDEOS
and i gotta say im absolutely LOVING this one!!!!! amazing job
hollow purple your battle is my battle are the two jjk OSTs that got me hooked and I have quite a few faves. But to name a few of em: hollow purple, your battle is my battle, self embodiment, hidden inventory, with rage, delirious and remember/ resolve. While watching jjk (and any anime in general), it’s so fun to listen to the OSTs and how they amplify the scenes!!
This video is insanely well-made for such a "small" channel. You deserve 100k subs at least!
thank you for touching on the topic of the soundtrack literally not even the fans have been discussing about it the most important thing in an anime, to me, is the soundtrack and the usage and this is one of the main reasons why JJK has slipped itself into my top 5 from the themes, characters, and the music i love an emotional roller coaster and the soundtrack is a great reflection of that
Still Unaware is a beautiful evolution of the song Toji Fushiguro.
There’s one song I wish was used and it was “No Hesitation” it’s so damn good
I didnt know i wanted a video (audio?) essay like this, but now i do. More analyses about other properties too, please
8:39 I hate to say it but you LITERALLY edged me with that
Gotta love TH-cam recommending me small youtubers that are actually good and funny
“Gushing over JJK ost” is the wildest video name I’ve ever heard and I love it so much
I'm so glad you made this video! Every time I listened to the ost I caught so many interesting details, especially the more subtle character leitmotifs, and I wished someone would make a video talking about it, so thank you! This was a joy to watch!
Now here are the answers I tried giving for your questions plus some comments (sorry, it got a bit long):
21:03 "Premature" is a nod to the title of the second part of this arc, named "Premature Death".
Still unaware is hands down my favorite track.. that muted piano sound just feels so comforting and nostalgic
im going to absolutely spam some notes in this comment so please conversate with me below, or ignore me, thank you!
in vs toji: the thematic comparison you mention on with rage is exactly tied to jujutsu sorcerers as a whole, not just the fights in this arc, as everyone is trained by nature to control their negative emotions (rage) and use the cursed energy efficiently and effectively rather than blowing it all off and spiraling. actually so crazy genius, ive always been fascinated by that section and how it somehow always worked in the SEVEN times they used it
in goodbye geto: i dont know if im remembering exactly correctly, but the name of episode 5 (mini arc) premature death, is a weird translation thing, and in japanese the meaning is a lot more pronounced. im pretty sure it refers to the premature death of talent, in this case, geto, turning evil and eventually dying before reaching his full potential. you can afflict premature death to so many things in this arc too, such as their friendship, gojo's death, amani's death, ect ect. but the song called premature is just referring to the arc name
in gojo gets sealed: with rage again!! doing exactly what i described before. in the moment gojo is supposed to be (as being explained by the spirits) losing his composure, and he does exactly what the song does with the C section and uses it masterfully, as he is gojo after all. the rage in his voice as he chants his domain, the absolute shock, such a good scene. realizing now that its important the song is "with" rage, because its not pure rage, its just as intended, with rage. for 3 years of youth overflowing, its specifically referring to the condition of the prison realm where a minute must pass within a captee's mind, and with how fast gojo's brain moves and how shocking it is to see your dead best friend again, that whole 3 years overflows and effectively gets him captured.
in yuji vs choso: im already excited this is my favorite part of the season 2 music arsenal, but before i get to that i just wanna mention how crazy it is yet again that they can use with rage so many times, it work perfectly each time, and still not get old. also, never noticed mechamaru's theme in this fight that is so sick, went straight over my head, and ALSO never noticed the gojo motif in red scale which is weird... but OKAY, RESOLVE OH MY GOD. literally my favorite musical moment of season 2. on that fateful JJK tuesday, already hyped to see the adaptation of this fight, hearing that familiar horn melody blast in gave me CHILLS man, and the drums again with the twist, sent me over the top i was geeking for days. its so nicely done and ties in so amazingly perfect with the lore and continues to serve the lore even in chapters coming out today (iykyk, if we get a third version of remember/resolve whenever tf its adapted i will have a stroke). you didnt really mention the thematics of it, but the choice is specifically this song because choso is fighting for his brothers from that episode, and is foreshadowing choso being yuji's brother at the same time. such an amazing callback, it pains me that a lot of the reaction channels i watched paid the music no mind (some picked it up at the drums but thats a lot more obvious ofc) okay ill shut up now.
in zombie daddy: just a small note, i absolutely adore the section of the song that the cowbell comes in. so modern gigachad meme sounding, it works so well and whether or not they included that because of the phonk genre type thing or they just thought it sounded cool, its so good.
OH MY GOD YOU NOTICED THE ASHES ON THE FIRE PART I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE LOL. ugh the choir coming in on the domain expansion, truly iconic. anyways FUUUUUGA
obligatory RIP to nanami. 💔
in right and wrong: nobara's theme is amazing im so sad we only hear it once, it better come back in the coming seasons. reminds me of some sort of day theme from a grassy level in a modern day sonic game. chefs kiss. watching reactors' faces shrivel up as they hear the music slow down and distort was so (evilly) fulfilling as a manga reader, it couldnt have been much better of a way to signal the situation's gone from awful to horrible to devastating yet again. the chair metaphor as a callback yet again to the final episode of season 1, telling yuji about how she only has so many seats in her life... ugh i miss her. anyways 👏 TODODOOOOOO i LOVE that man and i LOVE his theme that comes in, ugh it was everything i could ever wanted. and to top if off the absolute BOPPER of a version of boogie woogie that comes in is just peak yet again. tears in my eyes every single time i watch the first yuji black flash...

Nah that theme where Toji is introduced still gives me chills
It’s genuinely terrifying and I love it
Sukuna's theme ( not mahoraga one) creates an eerie feeling, you really understand the maliciousness of the character just by hearing it, the choir one is just on another lvl
YES! I've been waiting soo long for a video talking about this. It's literally one of my favorite music projects of all time.
You just became one of my favourite TH-camrs very quickly. Thank you for bringing attention to JJK's score.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR THIS. I was looking for something on the soundtrack because I just finished the anime and jesus christ, the soundtrack was one of the highlights. like there are SO many songs from the soundtrack in my liked playlist that i just put on and imagine the scenes. they're so powerful. ty for this amazing food
thank you, won’t yap about how much i love this ost, just thank you
With rage is so incredible
Amazing video! This deserves way more views but i guess people just aren't cool enough to appreciate OST's.
I haven't seen anyone mention it so this is the perfect video to share this with.
YESSSSS dude tysm for this!! Literally all of this video has been circling my mind for god knows how long!
Love your humor and editing style!!
You dropped this, bro 👑
I already loved the soundtrack of season 2, but you made me understand the motifs of it all
It’s used as like optimistic thinking from geto.
“I’ll absorb his curse spirit and then win!”
Im a massave music fan, and to see someone else get so passionate and descriptive is amazing.
Amazing video. Enjoyed every bit of it. Yoshimasa Terui and Gosso need more recognition for the music in s2
i was literally freaking out about the soundtrack the other day omg it's genuinely an orchestral masterpiece the amount of emotion it conveys in the scenes they play
This was an amazing video as a music lover and allowed me to connect with this soundtrack better than I would have been able to on my own. Thank you for your hard work. I'm sure this was ALOT to edit and create.
Thanks so much!!
I´m studying music to be a composer and I learned a lot from this video, ty!
when that first trailer came out for season two i had it on repeat just to listen
Finally someone talked about it.
The way the music adds to scenes are just amazing
I'm going to be replaying this video so much, GOSH I've been looking for more people to be gushing about the soundtrack just as much as I have been!! It's one of the first things I noticed (apart from animation) going into season 2 compared to season 1, just how tightnit, more purposeful, and thematically appropriate each track was, while repurposing iconic motifs from earlier. Season 1's ost has grown on me but still, it was a bit jarring at first lol. Anyways the Sukuna trio of songs will always be so perfect to me, plus the Yuji v Choso fight and Nobara's theme. Really all themes you spoke about are so good, but those are some standouts to me :]
I am one who thought the OP in Yuji's moment was honestly kinda fitting, made it seem like he was almost being ridiculed and I didn't even question it till later. I do think maybe adding more somber, creepy ambience noises would've made me a little more unsettled, but I don't think that's what they were aiming for lol
Maybe it’s just me but the fact that no one talks about the song Memories blows my mind
Which first plays during Choso’s memory
Jogo’s death
Kugisaki’s memory before she leaves the train station.
Miwa talking to Mechamaru on the train to Shibuya
That song really brings nostalgia, loss, happiness, regret and realisation all into one. This song needs to be spoken about more.
This video needs more recognition. Thanks for your time researching and analyzing!!!!
