I guess I actually need to keep watching. Last night Hood JJK came up in my feed and I watched it and was blown away by how well it did compared to what I've seen of the series so far.
> If you and the piano fought, who would win? Charles: Well, if the piano was fully out of tune, it might cause me a little trouble. > But would you lose? Charles: Nah, I'd play.
The artist that wrote the opening theme is "Eve" and honestly so much of his catalogue is this wildly impressive and almost all the videos are animation so there's always an interesting visual accompaniment too.
I’d highly recommend Spy x Family’s most recent ending, Todome no Ichigeki by Vaundy, featuring Cory Wong. Anything featuring Cory Wong is gonna be dope af, and Vaundy has quickly become one of my favorite artists for openings and endings
the man who wrote JJK's music is yoshimasa terui, he is part of the math rock band haisuinonasa and he is also credited for producing all of the music behind the math rock/pop idol group sora tob sakana
Yoshimasa Terui is the GOAT behind most of the soundtrack. He leads multiple bands such as siraph, haisuinonasa, sora tob sakana. freaking mind bending rhythms and minimalist/prog rock influences. he also wrote the opening theme for another anime called "Land of the Lustrous" which also has an amazing soundtrack that is sooooo worth exploring.
Starting at 2:40, not sure if anyone else pointed it out already but I think what you're finding is what's called the "royal road progression". David Bennet Piano made a video about it and outlined how in a lot of anime openings, the composers like to dance around this progression because the harmony evokes a feeling of wonder, adventure, and desire to be your best self. A sense of adventure and discovery, a sense of hopefulness and being moody. It's found everywhere in Jpop and anime op, it's honestly a really amazing harmonic instrument. I promise you the more you dive into anime music, the more you will find this progression everywhere lol its sometimes IV V iii vi or also used as iim7 V iii vi. It's a really interesting case study!
Not a drummer but it's my highlight of the song too. Those skipped beats are crazy with just listening, mad respect to drummers able to pull that kind of tricky hits.
The first song was done by EVE who makes tons of incredible songs which all have beautiful music videos to go with them, some of my favorite music ever
As others have pointed out, we NEED a part 2 Not just for the Openings of season 2, but also the music from the movie JJK 0. Sakayume from King gnu is just chef's kiss
the "anime sound" you are referring to is so real that when I first heard the jjk OP and got to that part I was like "OMG YES I LOVE WHEN THEY DO THAT" because it is so common and has been my idea of "japanese rock" but you know, everything happens subconsciously so now that you pointed it out it felt like all the excitement I feel every time in OPs/OSTs like my hero academia (peace sign) or fmab (hologram) and MANY others, makes sense and there is something specific that triggers the feeling. Thank you for this video! It was fascinating to watch and to understand what's going on, your passion for the subject is contagious :)
The constant "OH!! AUGH!!" throughout as you kept having realizations were so good 😂 I only wish that you had covered the endings from season 2. Especially "more than words" by Hitsujibungaku. Any plans for a part 2 for this video? The JJK namedrop alone is gonna draw a LOT of people!!
You are one of the reasons that I'll be getting back into music making/playing. I got super burned out in college and needed to take a break. But seeing you break down some of my favorite stuff tells me that I can do this to.
i have no idea about how any instruments work in the slightest, but i really admire how passionate you are about what you do. watching this video just filled the room with a bright atmosphere
If you enjoyed the Jujutsu Kaisen opening that much, its definitely worth checking out the artist behind it, Eve! He's got a ton of interesting music he makes besides just that opening that I think you might really enjoy if you like that merged prog/math rock + anime sound
There's an anime called Blood Blockade Battlefron that has a fantastic opening with great harmony, and a really fun outro too. The opening is called Hello, World! by Bump of Chicken
Although the music by itself is great, the way the series uses it's own soundtrack is incredible. There are INCREDIBLE moments like the use of "Remember" from season 1, the use of "Delirious" and "Malevolent Shrine" from season 2 that take my breath away no matter how many time I've watched them. Also, the third opening "Ao no Sumika" is incredible.
Dear Charles, First off, thanks so much for another truly excellent and enlightening video on what is absolutely one of the coolest anime soundtracks I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. As someone who is (just barely) musically literate, your content is always fascinating. The way you explain things, bolstered by your infectious enthusiasm, is just delightful! I know that the odds of you doing another JJK video are probably pretty slim, but if you do, there are two tracks that I highly recommend taking a look at: the first season 2 opening, which is just a great song overall, but the one that I’d truly love to see dissected is the somewhat atmospheric, truly epic sounding piece that plays during the climax of Sukuna’s fight with Mahoraga. It’s got this kind of east-Asian divine energy to it that is just spellbinding, and I think that you and all of your viewers would get a big kick out of you covering it.
13:10 as soon as you said that i knew EXACTLY wich ost you were talking about, i remember when the soundtrack album dropped on yt months later after season 2 came out, fell in love day 1 with no hesitation due to how good and hype it was and the fact that it wasn't even officially used yet made me so hype as a anime only watcher . (great video btw)
YES!! I am so glad that you are explaining the essentials of japanese music as we hear them, it serves as a great resource for those looking to study it.
Breakdowns of pieces like this never fails to remind me how great of a mind those people who are behind these masterpieces have. There's so much to unpack and I'm all here for it
Hell yeah! Been waiting for this one and hope you do another vid covering more, especially character themes: Limitless Cursed Technique, Delirious, Todo, Megumi, and Nanamis themes are my faves
I rarely laugh out loud at any videos but your energy and reaction to incredible music is so infectious and just makes me want to pick up my guitar and sit at my piano all at once!
Finally someone talks about No Hesitation. I love that song so much. I would listen to it so much and was waiting for its appearance in the anime I thought it would be used when todo and yuji fight mahito or when yuta showed up. No. A masterpiece was written and never used.
Glad I found your account! I love the energy you bring to your videos. That said, if you haven't heard it, I wholeheartedly recommend Kevin Penkins pieces from the Made in Abyss soundtracks. Transcendance and Hanezeve, & VOH are some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Too many masterpieces on the combined soundtracks to fit into a recommendation but those two are some of the most emotionally evocative pieces of music Ive ever found. The First Layer by him is also fun but not nearly as memorable.
If you like "No Hesitation" you need to check out Ichika Nito, he's a japanese solo guitarist and his playing is very similar. Also, for the heck of it: Marcin, Manuel Gardner Fernandes (and his band Unprocessed) and obviously Polyphia.
Attack on Titan last episode music is amazing. The one at the ending credits. You can do a video about, maybe just not showing the scenes at ending to be spoiler free.
I've played piano for 15 years and will never get to the level you're at. It's awesome you are insanely good, and enjoy your profession. Makes your content even more enjoyable.
god the music is so so so good and I love listening to you break it down, now that you’ve pointed out that anime 2-5 I got giddy every time I heard it in the video lol that tritone substitution explanation at the end was great too ily charles
YES!! I was just hoping for a Jujutsu Kaisen video. They have such beautiful piano songs, but also insane action. The piano tracks “If I am with you” and “Vague Reason” are 100% worth a listen. They’re simply incredible. The whole soundtrack is a masterpiece
As a professional guitarist, I love your pianist-approach to a guitar written/driven song. If distortion is involved, no guitarist is thinking full harmony- only basic theory, licks, and shapes that can be done with efficiency (and sound cool).
I definitely agree in general this is pretty accurate. However, with math rock the overall complexity of time signatures require a well defined harmony to give the strong structure. The last song in particular would have sounded like chaos played at high BPM otherwise.
It’s been a long time coming. I used to watch a lot more with my ex (we’re both musicians), but since we broke up watching your videos haven’t been the same. This means a lot to me. Thank you Charles!
i love jjk music its so underated sadly my fav ost u didnt conclude because "Hidden Inventory" is just crazy. like the harmonic choices make me go crazy
I would love it if you'd listen to some of the songs from the OST in season 2. I know you don't often make follow ups to videos like these, but the tracks in season 2 have so many examples of beautiful piano and other things I'd love to see you're reaction to them
god i have never heard that last track before and i am ENCHANTED wowowow and obsessed with your reaction gah this was great. love how much you love and understand music.
You know what i love especially about the season 2 ost is that so many prior themes and ideas are reused in new ways in the music. Its pretty amazing how its used for different sections of fights or dialogue to make you think of previous episodes and characters (even just how they act)
The "Specialz" theme for JJK season 2 goes hard and, just like every other JJK anime song (opening or closing) it has sooooooo many things going on.... Awesome video Charles!
Thank you for reviewing Jujutsu Kaisen's ost!!! That was one of my suggestions in a comment, so I'm happy now (regardless of if you saw my comment lol).
This soundtrack is SO SICK. What are your favorite parts from it?? And how do you think they might use "No Hesitation?"
It really does hype up the fights and the animation with that is crazy. Also, the intro song goes so hard!! 😩
Also, the first time I heard the outro song. I was like “Oh shit! this is GROOVY!”.
REACT TO THE ACE COMBAT OST
i love the malevolant shrine theme so much. The female vocals are crazy
