Everything surrounding their relationship is just so intensely romantic (whether or not the love itself is romantic, this is undeniably true) that I can't help but interpret them as gay, or rather in love with each other regardless of what sexuality they align with. There is still plenty of evidence that you didn't go over, like the English translation of what Gojo says to Geto being almost directly confirmed as "I love you" by Gojo's English VA, and the visuals of Ao no Sumika, but even with just this video's worth of evidence it seems all but confirmed. It's incredibly frustrating to see people attempting to shoot down this idea off of plausible deniability; "it isn't confirmed therefore it isn't true", when this is not at all how human emotions work in real life. Your loved one could be suffering and not tell you, that doesn't mean that suffering doesn't exist. People treat emotional nuance in media the same way they treat POWER SCALING and that, to me at least, shows a COMPLETE lack of reading comprehension beyond the absolute surface level. Nuance is extremely important when tackling these kinds of topics as you point out in the video itself.
I am not against anyone viewing these two as just the bestest, most closest, most huggiest of roommates, but I personally feel that it is just too overwhelmingly obvious what Gege WANTS you to think they are to each other to see it any other way myself. And as someone who idolizes romantic love as one of the most beautiful things a human being can experience, it just makes the story of Geto and Gojo all the more tragic and, for lack of a better word, beautiful in my eyes. I can never see Ao no Sumika as anything other than a love song, and that makes it pair especially nicely with SPECIALZ, which is from the perspective of Sukuna, the character most vehemently and vocally against love in the entire series. It further eccentuates the still ongoing conflict of ideals between Gojo and Sukuna on top of the literal battle they were having at the time of Season 2's release. "The one who will teach you about love is..!"
yap.
@@Geilolp. You said one word and still somehow made less than one word’s worth of contribution
Wait wait wait gojo straight up said (or idk sth close to it) "I love you" to geto?? When was this? 😭
@@mira.r Gojo's english VA was asked at a convention what Gojo's last words to Geto were. He responded "I've been sworn to secrecy on that" and "It was localized I'm allowed to say that, and I am allowed to say that it was three words". Since there are little to no combinations of 3 words that would make sense in the context OTHER THAN "I love you", there isn't much speculation to be had here.
Some have said that maybe it was "my best friend" or "you're my friend", but neither of those make much sense as last words before murdering someone (with the former outright making no grammatical sense?), nor do either of those tackle the fact that what he said was LOCALIZED instead of just TRANSLATED (aka, it was changed to be more clearly understood by western english-speaking audiences). Given the many different words for and expressions of love in Japan, it makes sense that it would have to be localized to a simple "I love you" if that was the intended meaning of his original Japanese statement.
@@mira.r it's not confirmed as far as I know, his English VA said Gojo told him 3 words before killing him, which could be anything on it's own but with all this combined, I'm leaning towards an I love You, even though to me personally Geto's reaction to that didn't sit very right, but it was so long ago we really don't know

Also, gojo felt untouchable by anyone else because no one could hurt him in any way, no one could come close to him with his power, literally, but geto was able to get through that, he was able to have power over gojo, the reason we hate falling in love is because it gives others too much power over us, so it was the only thing that could give anyone power over gojo, that’s why geto made him feel not as untouchable, not because he could actually rival him in power, but because he had that innate, unconditional power over him
Also gojo lashing out in front of the KFC was like him threatening to leak geto’s nudes if he walked away
Adding to these:
Gege has confirmed that he reads BL series.
Some of the gay relationships in the BL mangas that he reads share tons of similarities with Gojo and Geto's relationship.

@@moonstone-spell-caster Ok? That literally means nothing, you can compare both relationships all you want it has 0 value
Personally, I don't think JJK is about romantic love. I think its about love in general. Familial Love, Romantic Love, The Love for a Friend. There's examples of all types of them. Maki's love for her sister, Choso's love for his Brothers, Yuta's love for Rika, Hana's love for Megumi, Yuji's love for his friends, Geto's Love for fellow Sorcerers. It was never about romantic love in specific.
Even more specifically, its about how love is a curse, and how it leads to terrible things. Maki's love for her sister led to a massacre. Choso's love for his brother's led to his death, and to his own self esteem being beyond diminished. Yuta's love for Rika... well it literally cursed him. Hana's love for Megumi led to not only her own injuries, but to Megumi becoming Sukuna's vessel. Yuji's love for his friends led to him suffering immensely, and many of those friends dying or suffering. Geto's love for his fellow sorcerers led to him going down the wrong path in life.
Not only that, but those who forsake love are rewarded. Sukuna, namely, but also characters like Kenjaku, Uraume, Kashimo, even some Jujutsu High students like Hakari forsake love in different ways. Even worse, the one who learned what love is, Kashimo, died as soon as he learned it.
But... not nessecarily.
The more the story goes on, the more this narrative begins to change. The more love becomes a blessing rather than a curse. And the more those who forsake it get cursed instead. Sukuna has gone though absolute hell, Kenjaku died as a result, Uraume and Hakari are locked in a stalemate, with no way to help their allies. But Kashimo... he got rewarded as well as punished, in a way. He died, but he died happy and fufilled. The more characters embrace their love for each other, the more they win against Sukuna. The closer victory is.
And I believe the one spearheading this is Yuji. The one who suffered the most from it, is slowly beginning to flip it on its head. Slowly, but very surely.
Very fitting sukuna is the final villain as he views love as useless and thats probably a big reason he hates itadori so much. He is the most loving character we see
that's a beautiful summary
I think it's more about how love relates to violence in difference ways. Many characters were not "cursed by love" so to speak because love is part of them, but when they loose it or it starts damaging them you start wondering at what point it stops being wprth it and what point it's better to become like sukuna. Then you have characters like Toji that work completely opposite but also the same. Toji grew unstable, scornful and desperate to prove his family wrong but, once he found love, he changed. Later on, when he lost that love, he went back to how he was before, and all these voids and insucurities led him to his death and abandoning his child. It makes you question what was the real curse. The lack of love or love. The best example is Megumi. Although Toji denies it, the most probable thing is that he did love Megumi, which he named his blessing. After his wife passed, however, he became unable to take care of a child. Many like to speculate it's because it was a reminder of his dead wife, which is rather likely. In that way, it ended up being a curse too. He was essentially a character both blessed and cursed by love, but also cursed by the lack of love We can't also ignore the fact that Geto, for example, also changed because of the careless way he was forced into aituations he shouldn't have been exposed to and not feeling supported, which can be a lack of love or at least a percieved lack of love. Then we have Mei Mei and her brother, in which she doesn't really love him but she takes advantage of his feelings to explait him. And there are examples like Gojo who became a better person through love even if he also suffered greatly because of it.
That way, I don't think jjk is simply going from the premise of love as a curse, but more generally from how love as a concept changes or affects people in major ways. Including the loss of loved ones, the absence of love, the lies about love, the exploitation of your love, or more positive feelings like the blooming or the discovery of love
why not mention gojos love for geto in this big ass comment? Isn’t that the whole point of the video?

Exactly, but in the end of the day gege unfortunately never explicitly confirmed it or at least yet. So we shouldn’t ever really say its canon, its just heavily implied by the fans & others.

true 😭 to me it makes their relationship even more painful just that but it really doesn't change anything
I personally think it ruins a bit of the symbolism behind these 2 , ever since day 1 , gojo was told he was the strongest, he was told he was the reason the balance of humans and curses in jjk shifted , he was pretty much treated like a god and kept away from the outside world by his clan , but then , when he met geto , he could finally have someone just strong enough to relate to , and the thing is , geto pulled gojo down to earth , geto was a special grade who grew up in a family of non-sorcerers , he wasnt raised and treated like a god , he didnt turn out to be arrogant , he was Humble, that is what helped geto change gojo in a way you know ? Geto was the Bridge between gojo and his humanity , because gojo didnt belive he could have such a thing when ever since day 1 he was treated like a god and a tool , so them being BFFS , at least me , makes way more sense , and yes , i can acknowledge that gojo and geto do share such a deep bond that not many BFFs have , but i see it as platonic love , that they saw eachother as brothers . ( ps. But that doesnt mean i hate anyone who ships these 2 , u can i ship them , i personally find the ship very saturated and overrated and i've already been through this before with naruto x sasuke , despite everyone shiping them , i never did and always saw them a friends , in the end , naruto got with hinata ).

Because they aren't. No hints. No nothing. There were literaly no romantic feelings between them.
10:30 it's also important to mention gojo actively picked that day. in chapter 221 when gojo gets unsealed and confronts kenjaku kenny initially proposes november 19, but gojo asks for december 24 and kenny replies "how romantic"
now this could be interpreted as romanticism between gojo and sukuna, but the fact that kenny the person who has access to geto's memories and knows when he died says it leads me to believe otherwise.
also on the topic of trans and non-binary characters in japanese media while i have zero credibility in the topic and am basically a complete outsider to japanese culture I believe gender transition is a bit more accepted in japanese culture than homosexuality moon channel has a great video on the topic if anyone is interested
What’s the video called?😅
in a lot of east asia, transsexualism is more accepted than homosexuality
@@倪文瑄 That's because they're more comfortable gay men turning themselves into straight trans women than they are with gay men just being men

One of my favorite little thing that could maybe just be coincidence is that when you count the days between Geto and Gojo dates of birth, then look for the day in between, its July 7th, also the day of the tanabata festival in Japan or the day of STAR CROSSED LOVERS. 16:12 im also pretty sure that japan has a weird relationship with people being gay vs being trans, so it’s “less controversial” to be trans than it is to be gay, strangely enough.
I've heard that it's more about conforming to a specific standard than just identity
Like if a trans person aligns themselves with the stereotypical idea of what their gender is they are more likely to be accepted than a gay man that is already not conforming
@@airplanes_aren.t_real oh yeah, this exactly

@@magicnebula5398 i wouldn’t know lol😶 probably badly since i used gay as a synonym for queer in general, and non binary would likely be seen as weird too, since the acceptance of trans people in japan seems to rely on how much they conform to the standard of their gender, and there isnt really a standard to non binary people

I also thought it was just to express the way Gojo was fixated on Geto, in his eyes he was the only one sharing the same world with Gojo, love, romance whatever Geto was his world for all purposes. Gojo might not even understand what love is as hinted to, he just knew that Geto was the only one to ever understand him, love might not even be enough to describe it, romantic or not.
They are literal soulmates. They remind me of Soul and Maka from Soul Eater, they are soulmates, you can’t imagine them with anyone else, if they were it feels unnatural and forced, they just make sense. Wether it’s as lovers or best friends, their love is unbreakable

That's amazing!
this is genuinely a hilarious detail how odd would it be to have this as a coincidence
Finally, someone said it! I'm so fucking happy someone said this outloud in a public platform such as youtube.
You literally said all the points that me and (some of) my friends have made among ourselves. What I've come to notice is that most people who see Gojo and Geto as queer are queer viewers - I speak as a sapphic woman. My queer friends and I think that Gojo and Geto's romantic feelings were obvious, meanwhile my straight friends and older brother don't really see it (they usually they accept other interpretations, but I'm highly aware that this is something that is not that common among the JJK fandom, my friends are just very open minded). I think queer people grew up looking for representation between the lines, so we are used to this type of situations; while staight people are used to have everything presentend to them on a plate, which makes them less accustomed to subtle romantic plotlines such as this.
Also, thank you for pointing out the differences between the american/canadian/european and japanese views on lgbtq+ rights. In the West, we tend to forget that our morals and ways of thinking are not universal. It's safest for the mangaka for the characters' sexualities or genders to be vague, if they wish to make a story with a queer subplot - it's not ideal, but it's the reality. Hopefully, in a decade or two, japanese mentality and laws will change and queer people like me won't be called insane for seeing the obvious.

We know three things about the last thing Gojo said to Geto:
1. It's 3 words in English (confirmed by Gojo's EN VA).
2. It was spoken at some point in JJK 0 (stated by Gege in an interview).
3. Geto's responded to it by smiling and saying "at least curse me at the end."
"I love you" consists of 3 words in English and was spoken by Yuta in an earlier scene. It also makes sense given Geto's response.

THIS IS SO... but I thought it was for cinematic, the studio did a pretty good job *still sob* because letting the viewer figure it out for themselves is what makes them remember it longer. yeah, i heard MAPPA really likes Gege

“My best friend” is also an option, apparently they didn’t mute it in the Italian (?) dub (I think it was Italian) and it said something like that. Ao No Sumika also seems to point at it being “Will we meet again?” but it’s not 3 words.
Though an unofficial translation of the Light Novel gives the description that Gojo’s words were “embarrassing (translator’s note: makes you self conscious)” so it could definitely be something like “I love you”
Finally a REAL JJK analysis!
I also think that Geto having a “family” consisting of individuals who are considered on the “outskirts of the acceptable majority” within a very conservative Japan, says something too (orphans (mininana & negi), a black person, someone who is very likely lgbtq, and a woman sorcerer who probably isn’t that mainstream amongst sorcerers who are predominantly male).

I like how, despite mentioning the opening, you didn't even bother going into the nuance of the visuals and meaning of them, with the fighting fish and such, because that single line was really all you needed to prove it.
He literally said lets not get into the themes on this video. Theres alot to unpack in the opening but he is touching on it to prove the overall story.
@null6406 no for something that big it needs it own seperate video dedicated to that only. He is using that factor to once again show how gay they were through the _overall_ story. The themes are one factor just as many others he mentioned in which he condensed into one, this video dedicated to all the hints not just the theme songs
@null6406 Sometimes delving too deep into the evidence can stray you away from the point you are trying to make, The video isn’t just about proving if they were gay but rather Jallo was trying to show us the deeper nuance of the implications that them being gay represents.
@@SemekiIzuio What's in the opening?
What happens in fish's part?
@@yulimartorrealba5851 So the opening is pretty clearly a love song going as far as to use the romantic word for love (koi) in japanese. Its also very clearly about Gojo's teenage years, and implied to be a sort of letter to Geto, the same way the ending is from Geto to Gojo about his defection from Jujutsu high. Ive actually done an analysis of both songs and god its crazy how much love symbolism is in there 😭
The fighting fish, or betta fish symbolism, is about the fishes that are shown in the ending (i think, maybe the OP). They represent Gojo and Geto, being both white at the start before one of them darkens and becomes "sick". The reason they are betta/fighting fish is because two males of the species cannot be together since theyre extremely territorial and one will end up killing the other for dominance.... Also, when the black fish is in front of Gojo, he cant help but stare at it, but Geto closes his eyes and ignore the white fish passing in front of him, showing how their relationship is decaying over time for Geto but Gojo is kind of oblivious to it. Yeah its pretty sad :(

someone pointed out that gojo has remembered geto for longer than he had actually spent time with him and I fell to my knees. if you think about it, they didn't even spend that much time with each other, they spent maybe 3 years actually together. and gojo spends the next decade remembering geto.
in season 2, star plasma vessel arc they were in their 2nd year which was 2006. In 2007, the next year Geto starts his murder spree and cult. he never even graduated from jjk high, so they were very much still in school. So from only 2004/2005ish-2007, is how long they *actually* spent together. Gojo then procedes to just have to remember Geto from 2007 to 2017 when he ended up killing Geto.
If you think about it, it's like how could they even be so sure of who the other is, and why do they keep refering to each other as best friends even when they both haven't even seen the other in a while? I can't take this as platonic because to *ME* there's something more here than just friendship. To me, it's like they're both holding onto a love from days gone by. And its something that only works because they're still hung up on each other. If they weren't they would've just killed each other by now, they wouldn't have waited 10 years waiting.
Oh my god! I never consciously thought about that. I'm gonna cry. 😭 I am 100% convinced their love is of romantic nature, I accept if someone doesn't see it that way, but I won't let anyone try to change my opinion.
If one of them was a girl would this even be a debate?
People so inherently against this kinda stuff with non-hetero relationships it's weird.
THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYINGGG peoples bigotry just jump the fuck out when you express that you can see satosugu in a romantic way even though their closeness is indisputable. but if one of the was a girl they would praise how it’s the best ship in the world due to all the canon and background information on them… like it’s okay to like a gay ship it’s not gonna kill you
I mean, I've seen ppl do this with itakugi🤷🏾♂️ but overall yeah
And lets mention that gojo has sore eyes when he wakes up in his chair at the end of the hidden inventory arc.
So he cried while thinking about his past with geto . Hinting that he misses him
Regardless of how romantic that love they have is, the fact that it is so intense, that it is so defining to both of them is kind of what is more important, at least to me, about their story.
It's easy to write off anyone who says they are gay as just being fujos obsessed with making any closely involved male characters butt buddies but as this video points out there is more than enough to argue that there's a lot more to it. And it's easy to write off anyone who says they're just friends as just being homophobic but there is a certain level of beauty that exists within two people platonically loving and caring for each other so deeply and I think it's genuinely important to have representation of deep love between two people of the same sex that doesn't just come down to being romantically involved since not all love that is deep has to be romantic. Regardless of how you feel though, there is one undeniable fact in all this.
*KENJAKU IS A PAN ICON.* #MYGOAT
PANJAKU FTW

Kenjaku is NOT a pan icon (it was for the mission trust)
@@crocoboi7936 the Naruto x Sasuke thing makes a lot of sense, they shared two kisses between each other, Naruto has sacrificed his life more than once for Sasuke and so does Sasuke to him, they've passed trough, done and share more things that with their girlfriends so Naruto x Sasuke is actually a ship that makes forreal sense. Gon x Killua doesn't since both of their characters are children that found comfort on each other and so became friends trough two defining factors gon is strong and so is Killua.

More than any powerscaling video, this is the kind of analysis that keeps me engaged with the series. It gets to the heart as to why this series is so great and also so infuriating. Interpretation. The top of Gojo and Geto needing to be vague by necessity instead of being black and white is undoubtedly great writing. I just wish we didn't have that desire to ask for a straight answer, otherwise conversations would be less painful to have.
Also the bit about the theme blew my mind. I shared the clip with my friend. Pray for my safety.
nah nah it wouldnt be a straight answer hehehe ghhdhhgghcxtycc
Honestly, these are the videos that are severely lacking in the JJK commentary community. I’m sick of seeing powerscaling, since the nuance of the series is chefs kiss 🙂↕️

I've always interpreted them being soulmates, but it's vague enough to be considered up to interpretion. Even Mei Mei and Ui Ui is more explicit lol.
bit of an understatement.
Like Zelda and link, besides the first game there relationship is always vague enough to be interpreted
It kinda tells a sad story that you can have such inappropriate things shown in most anime popular and manga. A lot of underage (coded or explicit) stuff with adult is still considered fine. Even incestuous things are more allowed. But two confirmed gays sharing a peck on the lips? That is too much.
@@Sienisota right? i see so many jjk fans treating mei and ui's whole dynamic as 'haha mei mei's literally drake someone come get her' but the moment they see anyone interpreting sugusato's relationship as romantic, they lose their absolute sh..t. make it make sense to me istg.
I think what’s vague is them being romantic and up to interpretation. But them being soulmates is clear, Gojo denies his abilities, the thing that makes him himself yet he claims his soul knows otherwise
In a novelized JJK0, there is a line that I found would fit the whole romance thing, in my opinion.
"Even so, Gojo's gaze, covered under the white bandages, had always, always, been staring at the shape of Geto's soul"
24:50 “using the censorship in favor of the story” I don’t think it’s possible to word this in a better way, this explains everything

Also phenomenal video
😔real
Holy fuck. This is the BEST video i have seen on the subject. The nuance and the backed up logical argument is perfection. You did it quite succintly as well! You just earned a follow from me!!! Bell and all. Fantastic work!
I was going through most of this video with so many thoughts but the way you ended it made me like it so much more, I appreciate the fact that you didn't just call the non - shippers stupid and move on with it slapping them with the hints layered throughout the series, cuz really, it's not anyone's fault for not knowing 24th December is Valentine's Day in Japan or that KFC is a romantic food item (that shit still blows my fucking mind man, Gege you sneaky little....). I think people who've read the story and had the impression that they were best friends don't deserve to have their view forcefully changed, because in the end, they had just as much emotional attachment to their friendship as someone who interpreted otherwise had to their romance, saying things like, that would just make their story better and more tragic (Mother's Basement said that in his OP analysis where I first found out about all this) is a little disingenuous as in my opinion friendship and romance are separate drives and one doesn't have to invalidate the other, having romance in a relationship doesn't automatically make it more, and it kinda sucks to see that implied so many times in stories and social media, even subtly with phrases like, "more than friends" or "just friends", I might just be saying all this as an aromantic who barely experiences one of those feelings but alot of my friends share the same opinion. And same goes for the people wanting them to be gay, I believe both sides can just simply, accept a different opinion and even appreciate the fact that a form of art they love is nuanced enough to be open to interpretation.
As another aro ace you totally get me. Theres alot of implications sure but nothings been confirmed so it can be left as it is to the person that fits best for them either frienship or more. It is smart not to confirm anything because it would absolutely destroy and chaos to the manga and characters considering how much of an Icon Gojo is and how globally popular JJK is to the point its very dangerous. But still I personally would just like an answer just so that everyone gets their answers and this speculation hinting obviousness gets put to rest. I can imagine after JJK is over people will still wonder.
As someone who isn't aromantic but hasn't experienced any romantic attraction yet, is romance not "more" than friendship? I feel like it genuinely means a relationship with more intimacy, affection, loyalty, and closeness than friendship right? There are some things you could admit to your beloved but not to your closest friend. Though, I suppose you would consider your closest friend something akin to your beloved..?
Also, I feel like phrases like "more than friends" and the like just refer to romance having more intimacy and stuff than friendship, not that it's more meaningful or superior to it. Sorry for the rambling; I'm genuinely curious about how you would view these types of things. I hope I didn't offend you in any of this 🥹
@@mira.r Oh no I'm absolutely not offended, I myself wrote this in curiosity of others' opinions as well. I personally believe (funny coming from me) that even though relationships are generally prefered with the closest friends and have the potential to greatly enchance the bond between two people due to all the time and things they get together, making it a general estimate is still something I wouldn't agree with, I think people are perfecttly capable of making friends they share very close bonds with without any form of intimicy or romance, just like they're capable to getting into potentially bad relationships, and when it comes to things like secrets, my friends pretty much all there is to know about me and I would like to believe it goes both ways :D. With phrases like "just friends", it is possible they don't imply superiority, I obviously don't know the origin of these and shouldn't have implied otherwise. But I stil believe, especially in western moveies, that friendships between people who have the potential to be attracted to each other is often sidelines in favour of their romance, Harry and Hermonie from the Harry Potter movies comes to mind (not to say she should've ended with Ron), and I just personally don't like to see that.
Something I do not think is discussed about enough is how a lot of people who vehemently say they're not lovers are usually comparing it to their real relationships and are uncomfortable with mlm relationships with characters they like. It's a huge problem in shonen communities where many people feel uncomfortable with gay relationships because they hate the idea that one could perhaps see them as such
Honestly I don’t think that’s why people don’t really like mlm, yaoi and yuri is very fetishized and a lot of shippers take over said community and fill it with mostly just ships of wlw and mlm, and with how much it is shown in communities and etc. it can get annoying very annoying
To put it in words, I had a similar relationship with my best friend. It was a really weird blur line between love and friends.
That's completely besides the point. I read BL, but I'm not crazy like some people out there. I acknowledge strong platonic relationships exist, and to me Gege was very clear and explicit that their love is a platonic one, not romantic or sexual.
Or they want them straight for themselves. Do you know how many of the gojo & geto fangirls would lose their minds if they found out both of them are gay?
@@LittleSparklingStarshe modeled gojo and getos relationship after a BL he read that ended in tragedy. Ignoring nuances doesn’t mean the author intended something to be one specific way. They have a sort of romantic relationship whether or not it’s more than platonic. There are many, many things he wrote that point to it being explicitly romantic, but that doesn’t mean it immediately makes them in love with each other. But still…
I love this video, thank you. No matter how people interpret these two, this video emphasises just how deeply they love and care for each other. I see them in a more romantic lens, but I get that sometimes platonic relationships can be very deep too.
OMG!!! The multiple christmas eve references gege wrote for them is GENIUS, thank u for sharing this
The theme of them longing for each other but being pushed away by fate is so heart-wrenching. If nothing else, it's a poignant reminder of how ephemeral existence is and how helpless even the strongest can feel when they cannot stop the most important thing from just seeping through their fingers. Fun fact, the street their 'KFC break-up' happens in is called Omoide Yokocho (思い出横丁), which can be translated to 'Memory Lane'. Also, after the latest manga chapters, the other Gojo's image song (Mada Minu Ashita ni by Asian Kung-Fu Generation) feels even more prophetic in how it portrayed the dynamics of these two.
I wasn't aware that gayness was seen as a fetish in Japan or other cultural things mentioned, so thanks for info. Personally I think Geto and Gojo weren't lovers, but they might’ve wanted to be, and would have, if things had been diffrent. Perhaps my asexuality is colouring things for me, but I think they had romantic love for each other, just without the physical aspects.
Not saying physical was out of bounds, just that that it wasn’t the part that was most important to them. That it could've gone that way, if they had lived normal lives in a world where gayness was as accepted as in Western countries. But it wasn't. And they never confessed their love to each other, because the world they lived in.
Honestly, same. I am a sore loser with no friends and because of this I have no idea how close friends are like. So, I personally prefer interpretating them as somewhat romantic or them having soulmate kind of love so that it makes it easier for me to understand them.
I think he's blowing it out proportion because there has been gay protagonists in shounen before. Also, the theory of Gege insinuating them being gay falls apart considering they were admiring Waka Inoue's tits on Gojo's flip phone. If you want to subtly insinuate something, you gotta be consistent.
And OP lyrics, really? Gege had no say in the lyrics of this song, considering it canon is wild to me.
Only Gege has a say what is truly canon or not, not some songewirter or anime director.
@@LittleSparklingStars Gege has said the anime expands on things he didn't have time to write in the manga, and he has been an active part during the writing of the anime. Junpei's backstory, for example, was something Gege really wanted to flesh out more, and said he was glad he got to do that for the anime.
This wasn't a case of author selling the rights to some animator. Gege had given out a copy of JJK to his favourite animator even before jjk had hit big, saying that if there ever was going to be an anime, Gege wanted him to be the one who animates it. Gege has been fully involved and approved everything put into the anime.
@@LittleSparklingStars As to tits... If you are *actively* hiding in the closet, you make sure to talk about tits to your buddies so they don't suspect anything. Especially in countries like Japan, where image is everything. Plus looking at an image of a pretty girl while ignoring Riko was a deliberate joke on her expense.
Canonically, according to the author, Satoru Gojo is afraid of women. Suguru Geto was more desired by ladies because his personality was less abrasive than Gojo's.
I did say I thought they didn't actually DO anything, right? Because that is how it comes off: As teens who might’ve explored things if their lives weren't in constant danger, and if Japan wasn't judgemental about gays.
Compare to Naruto and Sasuke for example: Despite having a bit fan service sprinkled in for the yaoi fans (in the manga), it was always obvious they were interested in women and had their own female love interests.
Gojo's and Geto's relationship seems to include genuine like, love and respect each other. They have never shown any interest in women around them and have no known history of girlfriends, not even Geto, who Canonically is more popular with the ladies.
We have no confirmation on Gojo's or Geto's sexuality, or lack of thereof. Arguing over individual interpretations is silly: Don't like this type of interpretation? Don't consume content that likes it.
You did the absolute best possible job with this video. Thank you so so so much. For how informative you made this video and how much of the jjk story you brought into consideration. You absolutely could of made a video just abt getogojo and it would of succeeded but you did everything you could to show us WHY there relationship is the way it is and how it goes so much farther, reaching into our own world. I greatly appreciate it. I learned a lot.
One moment in the show that might relate to this topic is how Gojo's students didn't even know what he truly looked like until after he killed Geto. Like showing that his students didnt know anything really about him as he didnt know what to do with his feelings until after its to late to go back
Well he did tell Yuta about getting his ID from his best friend and in turn Yuta took it upon himself to want to kill Kenjaku so that Gojo wouldn't kill his best friend again. So Yuta got a peek at that side of Gojo.
So they loved each other , but they couldn’t tell each other

Very nicely written. I really liked how you presented the information. And the editing was immaculate
I think the most interesting possibility is that their relationship was neither "friendship" not romantic. The relationship they had was heavily defined by their status of being the "strongest" and the companionship they found in being "equal" at one point. It's like two people being stranded on an island together; even if they come to love one another, first and foremost they needed each other to stay sane. That's my take at least.
finally someone who gets it. geto was the first person gojo didn't see as an animal, its not that they had love between them, it's that he was his only equal. this also parallels to Gojo teaching Sukuna about love- them 2 aren't IN love, it's just that they're the only 2 creatures on each other's level. It's way broader than "gay or friends" its more of a question of "do i see this creature as a person or an insect"
I think Gege did what many movie writers do when they want to keep something vague. He wrote some scenes in which it was implied that there was romance between Gojo and Geto, and some where they were just friends. The best part about this tactic is that it always leaves things up to the audiences interpretation. Personally, I think they have a very romanticized friendship, but the question of "are gojo and geto gay?" is entirely up to the viewer.

Friendly neighborhood historian who is also queer here! 👋🏾 Another thing to keep in mind about queer history outside of the United States/Europe that same-sex relationships and romance long before we crafted a language around LGBTQ+ identities.
In an academic sense, you could say that the concept of homosexuality was a “western invention,” not because same-sex relationships between menfolk were unique to Europeans/Euro-Americans but because homosexuality stems from a German word and comes with very Eurocentric values and viewscapes. As historians, we often hesitate to refer to people using queer terminology because these individuals more than likely would not have seen themselves as bisexual, lesbians, ace, or gay because the modern constructs around those words did not exist in their ancestral identities or their intimate relationships. Another thing to keep in mind about Japan. Same-sex relationships, specifically those classified as homosexual, were never fully criminalized in Japan. A part of the reasoning behind this may be because of the practice of pederasty wherein adult men entered romantic and/or sexual relationships with their young male acolytes, taking vows of fidelity and friendship through the apprenticeship (this was common among Buddhist monks and samurai). Male sex work was also relatively common and cross pollinated with traditional theater. While marriage was accessible to these unions the “brotherhood” formed through these intimate relationships could be structured around monogamous language for their duration. Only as Japan modernized do we really start seeing the emergence of this widespread censorship and cultural erasure towards queer men.
Many queer folks today have to remain closeted as there are few legal protections from workplace and housing discrimination. Harassment and violence are underreported; queer youth are especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.
In Universe: Gojo and Getou are teenagers in the 2000s. If it’s still rough to be openly queer in Japan now, imagine how much worse it would’ve been for two hormonal, emotionally stunted demon slaying teens in ‘07.
So this a loooong way of saying that these two are gay af 🌈✨

Why?
One of the gojo canon theme song is "shame on me" by Avicii ,where the narrator of the song explains his obsession & toxic love for his lover.
Both geto & gojo died during Christmas Eve aka the most romantic holiday in japan.
One of gege recommended bl manga "the night beyond the tricornered window" has the same scene as the kfc break up incident.
For, some reason gojo really gives me a little bit of the vibe of loras Tyrell from asoiaf ( both loras & gojo put renly & geto on pedestal and nobody can replace their place in their life or heart.)
Yes, Megumi definitely fits the archetype of ' tragic Greek hero'.

THEYRE TAKING OVER MY FEED ON EVERY SINGLE APP I CRY OVER THEM AT LEAST FOUR TIMES A DAY
I want to add that Akari (Hidden Inventory ending) is Suguru pov. I am so sad since I read the lyrics from both songs, ages ago. Every day I found another sad aspect of their relationship and love, how deeply they care for each other even when they paths were so different. Gojo shaped his life as a teacher to not repeat the story again, give Megumi two friends because he did not wanted he ended alone like him. He took teen Geto's morals to heart and lived by it.
They love each other maybe in ways they as kids did not understand.
My heart ache every single time. Gege did in fact wrote a love story, love in so many shapes and layers just like irl.
Bro why did this video make me cry 😭
I see jjk as like the most homo manga I’ve ever read. There are so many gay scenes you can say, and so many different characters that people have gay ships with. To list a few I wouldn’t mind if they were cannon and would actually support are, satosugu, Itafushi, and nobamaki. They all have their scenes that make it actually have sense to it. Especially satosugu. This whole video proved it pretty much cannon. But thing like Itafushi, which have little things that they do for eachother, and how megumi could even tell yuji was feeling down at the exchange event? He asked if he was ok cause he cares. Yes a friend can do that too, but I just see it differently.
Also I love your explanation of thrm bro, like if you see them as just friends then that's fine but you literally CANNOT deny thst their soulmates, platonic or not, their just like that. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!!

im not even joking this video is the best thing ive seen in like a really long while and i guess its stupid to say over like anime men but i'm so glad that something like this can be so widely investigated and looked into and stuff and the idea that they cant be together bc of fate but also possibly because of censorship is crazy to me coming from a mainstream shonen anime and this video is really really really really good !!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!!!!!
Happy Pride month fantastic video as always dude!
I think saying they’re just friends or in a gay relationship is equally shallow. I don’t see them having romantic feelings for each other in the common sense, but I don’t see them being just friends either. They’re passionate for each other, in a way that goes beyond just platonic or romantic. They are each other’s soulmates, with some bromance on the side.
Something that a lot of people don’t think heavy into is that Sukuna speaks on not needing to be taught what love is; as he already knows. However, he believes he was the wrong one got the lesson. I think this was a meta way to say Gojo needed to understand what love is. He lost it and his understanding of it with Geto. Geto was Gojo’s heart, and he took it with him.
Theyre literally soulmates. I can see them being romantic, or platonic but either way no one will ever convince me that they are not soulmates.
Expected a fujoshi rant, but it was way more in-depth and eye opening than I ever expected. The deep dive into the Japanese love culture and how media and mangakas deals with LGBT content was such an unexpected but much needed commentary, that I thank you for broadening my world view... While watching JJK I did think they were soul mates and were lost without each other, more than just friends or even lovers. But with everything you presented especially the OST part, I will look at at them again when I rewatch JJK when s03 comes out just to break my heart even more knowing all this
W video, W opinions.
Happy Pride y'all
All I can say is that they both really do love each other whether it he gay or not is up to us
You're taking me the Mangaku's name is "gay gay"?
Ummm, yeah, the boys are gay
I always saw them as “brothers from another Mother” does anyone else see that or just me?
I've always figured that we're either so close that they considered each other brothers, or they had love for each other. But context clues points more towards a romantic love
True
You put this so well together, unlike other popular gay ships in shonen for example sasunaru, which is unintentionally and accidentally kinda gay but none of the characters are aware because they might not meant to be written that way (thats why there are jokes about how shonen authors suck at writing straight romance but unintentionally wrote the best gay love story).
On the other hand, satosugu though... it's intentional, not in a queerbaiting way, but a vital part to the plot and gojo's character. Also especially I'm sure gojo himself is very much aware of what he's feeling, he's intentionally written like that. I really agree with 11:11 because it's also my headcanon it's really fitting to the situation and that's what makes satosugu so complex and more painful. Tragic indeed. I feel like, dare I say, even though there are other romance subplots in jjk, but if we take satosugu context as romance, it's is the deepest one(?), more refined and explored, albeit vaguely, well because gojo and geto are very impactful in the story.
I may be a shipper but I am still healthy enough (lol) to differentiate something that is explicitly canon, subtext, or headcanon. Sometimes some people tend to overanalyze. Thank you for the video, I love this! I'm glad I found this on reddit, I like that you're trying to be as objective as possible.
They’re literally soulmates. As someone who has read every chapter of the manga, watched every episode of the anime, watched the movie, and read the spinoff books, it is undeniable that JJK is underpinned by the tragedy of their love for each other. It is impossible to me that anybody interprets their relationship otherwise. I do not understand it. It’s like saying a Granny Smith is a fruit but denying the fact that it’s also an apple.
I love you man ur one of my favorite TH-cam channels rn
