This seems like a "counteroffer" of the Japanese rules. Lame. Too many referees are going to mess this up. I think having a single grip before going to the legs is much easier for everyone, refs and competitors alike.
Yep. I was competing under these rules, and it was a pain in the ass. Referees had to stop to watch the tape to see if it was a legit leg attack or not.
@@agalvan91 I'd like to think some judo schools might cut ties with the IJF in favor of the Kodokan, because if nothing else it would mean the IJF would lose its monopoly on competitive judo. Sadly, that's probably just a pipe-dream, though.
The issue is people playing the shido game with leg grabs. Lots of pro leg grab people are fairly new to competition. They weren’t around during the old days to experience just how bad the stalling was. False attacks during the leg grab days was rampant. I think IJF is really trying to avoid that issue again. False attacks are already pretty bad in modern judo, IJF doesn’t want to make the issue worse. I think they are tooling around with rules to find a good balance, allowing leg grabs, while minimizing stalling/gaming the rules. Honestly a good start. Edits for grammar.
@@NDOhioanUnfortunately as long as judo is in the Olympics most competitions will remain IJF-aligned - in many countries sports like Judo get government funding specifically because of the Olympics.

The Japanese rule is better. This makes it tricky to distinguish - how much of an attack does one need to make before you're able to grab the leg? Can you grab any leg that's attacking you?
I think the ruleset being simpler would be beneficial to judo and this version seems more complicated than the Japanese version and so less desirable in my opinion. That said I'll take it for now.
I still feel this seems too arbitrary with potential for a lot of 'exceptions'. Yes, bring back leg grabs, but why this 'only this way and not that'. Just make it clear and simple like the AJJF.
Are leg techniques allowed in a sequence of throws? For example, if you start with an ouchi-gari or kouchi-gari but can't finish it, can you quickly switch to a te-guruma? Or are leg grabs only permitted to complete the original technique, like using a ken-ken ouchi-gari with a leg grab to secure the throw?
Hey Chadi, I’ve always believed the spirit of the leg grab ban was specifically to counter the increasing entrance of non-Judo techniques into Judo Shiai. If you go all the way back to 2007 World Judo Championships and even before, we started to see a coaching method here in the USA, which emphasized ‘Winning’ a match over demonstration of good, classic Judo technique. I believe these coaching preferences occurred due to BJJ and Greco-Roman Wrestling fluent Judo Coaches teaching their young competitors how to get uke onto his or her back as quickly and easily as possible. Likewise, I personally noticed new Judoka using a form of ‘sacrifice’ Kata Garuma, in which Tori had next to no control over Uke and often dumped him Directly onto his head or neck. I had a BB do this to me as as an Ikkyu, and it literally infuriated me. VERY DANGEROUS and Careless thing to do to Uke. I noticed that there were Judoka advancing into the finals by using Morote Gari, over and over again. I can see why IJF decided to try and curb that activity…. Yes, it won matches, but in many ways I believe it violated the Spirit of Judo, as both a sport and a martial art. These things being said, a classic kata garuma, done from standing is a spectacular throw, and yes, it can be initiated by grabbing the pant leg. Likewise, with kibisu gaishi. The latter actually requires a fair bit of Judo knowledge to set up and use in a match. It is not dangerous to Uke generally either. These are my thoughts. Cheers Chadi. Congrats on your new book.

I am torn between bjj or judo. My school discontinued its judo program right when i started it. But I received my blue belt in BJJ. I love judo personally as I work in a Law enforcement agency and sometimes need to go hands on. I find Judo extremely useful and Muay Thai which I practice alot as well. Should I search out privates for Judo or should I just continue BJJ and learn takedowns every now and then there ?

Such a rule set can cause confusion and make it difficult for referrers to decide. Japanese rules change also require testing in real tournament to prove their effectiveness. In my view, the Japanese rule set appears more reasonable and practical.

the first rule is no good. it is just making the escape harder so there are less technique to be shown. if they want to see judo, aka demonstration od technique, then just add the rule saying you must immediately attack when you grab the leg
This complicates things so much. Try explaining this to spectators while the fight is happening... I think it might make things more controversial even.

Slow death of Judo will continue with more and more complicated rulesets. In my city in Poland there were 2 judo clubs when I was a child and now there is none and kids prefer BJJ these days.
I promise you that I and most other fighters will do a lot less upright judo throws like uchimata and standing seoi nage. Everyone gonna rather wait and Counter with leg grabs. This is not a good thing

As a French, i assume you saw that french newspapers have written it was a way to end Riner's domination? I'm not in Judo, eventhough i love using it in MMA. But i think it's navel gazering from french medias. Riner is near to retirement and Japanese have more fighters in small weight classes. And they would change the rules for one man near to retirement? Am i wrong?

I would prefer the Japanese style of having one arm on the gi permitting leg grab (if I understood the explanation right), but I'm fine with this too.

Bjj standing techniques are just judo techniques and greco roman wrestling doesn’t have leg grabs so how would that result in more morote garis?

There's no reason to block wrestling from being in Judo - Judo learned a lot from wrestling even in early days.
