Thank you so much for your video. I work in a big box store that sells a ton of houseplants. Unfortunately they arrived with a tag that only says houseplant. So I really appreciate you putting the actual name of the plants on your screen. Also you're the only video I've ever seen that covers air plants. They are super popular. Unfortunately they are very easy to kill. I really appreciate you giving those helpful tips on how to water them. I was wondering are air plants temperature sensitive? Do you have another video that shows the different kinds of air plants? Some of these are plants come super glued to a piece of wood or glass, if you try and pull a live plant off will you kill it? I ask this because sometimes people just want the plant and not the stupid thing it's glued onto.
Thanks Nick , great video, I have two Marantas, and two Calathea's and one Stromanthe, and they all seem to be just fine where I have them, in fact the Rattlesnake Calathea and Medallion Calathea are growing well. the Marantas are happy so far, and the Stromanthe Triostar is beautiful where I have her. Thanks Sandy! I think I’m going to get a small ZZ myself for our built in shelves in our hallway that doesn’t have a single plant on it. Could you imagine?! 😂
Hi Nick, Good morning. I am buying and planting my ferns, succulents, and cacti in self watering containers. They work magic for me. Those pots are made out of plastic but they are well designed. When I can find African violet planters at good price, I buy them.
New subbie here. I was just thinking that I have a lot of space and light in my "windowless" bathroom and would like a few little plants in there. This video came to the rescue. Thanks so much. I'd been using tap water that sat overnight on my plants and just this week switched to distilled water. Don't think my prayer plant likes it because she's gotten two yellow leaves since her watering. Gonna watch more of your videos because I know you'll talk about this problem.
I have a small bathroom on the north side of the house; it has no windows, only a skylight over the tub, and a 4" wide shelf around three sides. I have a couple of large-leaved Fittonias that have been pretty happy for several years, and I just recently added a fluffy ruffles fern that has been growing like gangbusters and a button fern that's also doing well. I have my fingers crossed everyone will be okay for our dark winter. That Ctenanthe is *gorgeous*; if I can find a small pot of it, I think I'll give it a go. Thanks for the recommendations!
I keep all of my calathea in my bathroom. My bathroom has one frosted window. My apartment generally gets really good light, the bathroom is the only room with one window (all other rooms have 2 windows), and it's the only frosted one. I find calathea do better with lower light than ferns, or ctenanthe or stromanthe, etc.... (ferns are my favorite plants, followed closely by prayer plants!) And I can turn the hot shower on for them when I am home to give them some hot steam humidity. For ferns, hot shower humidity is sometimes too much because it's not as controlled. Prayer plants just need high humidity all the time, ferns need humidity too, but not so much (cooler forests vs. hotter more humid jungles). I consider bathroom plants more high humidity plants than low light, but it depends on your bathroom. I would recommend calathea over ferns for low light bathrooms, mainly for the high humidity needs, if you remember to turn a hot shower on for them. My ctenanthe, stromanthe, and maranta are fine with higher light, if I mist them or have a humidifier, so i just keep them father away from a window.
Omg. This was so awesome. I love plants in bathrooms but didn’t know what it have. I have a cat that loves to eat my plants so I think the prayer plants are okay for cats
Can confirm. My cat took a chomp out of my calathea today, she was fine. I looked it up again to be sure. All good! Well, except for the plant, although I caught her before she really went to town on it.
Annette Price thank you Annette. My cat loves going to town on plants so I have to be careful. Usually when I introduce a new plant it takes a beating from my cat for a few weeks then she leaves it alone. I guess it’s a hazing ritual 😂
Quintessential bathroom plant for me is the spider plant! Whilst they don't require high humidity they certainly enjoy it. I don't have much counter space and my windowsill is very shallow so if I want big full plants in the bathroom then hanging baskets is the way to go!
Thanks for the video, as I have a really brigth bathroom, I'm always looking for plants that tolerate or thrive in hight humidity. My red prayer absolutelly loves beeing in my bathroom! I just try to let the soil dry a little before watering to avoid fungus formation.
Was resently introduced to your videos. LOVE THEM! Question about bathroom plants. I have a glass block window actually in my shower with a small ledge. Are there any plants that could handle getting "splashed" a bit each day?
I am looking to hang some plants in my shower to make it look lush...just getting some ideas. My bathroom has a small West facing window and my pilea in there is pretty happy.
Thanks. Not the usual picks I see for bathrooms. I have that fishbone ctenanthe & a grey star ctenanthe. Not fussy at all. Grow well in low lighting my living room and are happy with tap water. I have a window in my bathroom and keep variegated English ivy. It does fine, but doesn't grow massively fast as it only gets direct sunlight for about 15 minutes in the afternoon. I had a pilea cadierei in the bathroom and it did really well over autumn winter and doubled in size. However, when summer hit (am in Southern hemisphere), it got brown tips that spread quickly and the plant died. No idea why. So for now, just the ivy.
I must admit that my humidity in my room is a little higher than usual. Not because if a special humidifier but because of my aquarium. Its really not that much but all my ferns love it. I got 2 so far and they are putting out new growth like crazy. What i am trying to say is: if you have an aquarium, it may give a little more humidity to youre room so you can even have happy humidity loving plants.
Hi! Another great video. I have a sansevieria, birds nest I think, in my windowless bathroom, and it seems to be thriving! Two new babies have popped up and are almost as tall as the mother already.

Like you mentioned, i have a Peperomia scandens 'Variegata' in there that is loving its spot and I find myself trimming it so it doesn't cover up my sink mirror! I need to find some cool wood pieces to try to make something like that too.
Thank you for this informative video on plants that do well in the bathroom. Currently, I have an east facing window in my bathroom but it has clouded ? Glass. I see your window is clear glass. I have shied away from putting any plants in there b/c of the glass in the window. Am I too cautious? I have air plants in a south facing window. I soak mine for an hour (every 3 weeks) in a bowl with tap water set out for 24 hours. I let them dry upside down for 24 hours before putting them back in their homes. The key is drying them well so they don’t rot. My ionanthas are starting to pup (only after 4 years, HA!). I’ll try a birds nest fern in my bathroom. Good experiment. 🤓

Hi Nick I have a bathroom with only 1 window and I consider it low light because the window is small I am growing of course a golden pothos, varigated spider plant and a parlor palm. Thanks for the heads up about the zz plant going to have to get one.
Question for you Nick, when you were talking about the pepperomia and the new bigger leaf, taller plant you added to its pot, is that a Pilea aka The Aluminum Plant? I recently purchased 2 huge Pileas from a big box store and of course they only said "Foliage" on the tag. I knew they were Pileas and from my searching i know the green with silver is referred to as the Aluminum Plant, but I also got a much darker, purple type. I don't know much about the these plants especially the darker one and I can't find any videos for it. Can you give me any care advice for these types of Pileas or even actual names so I can research them? They are each in 8in hanging plastic pots and I got them for $6 each. Please help if you can.

I would love tips for my pineapple plants! Would they do well in a bathroom? Also, I’m not sure how or if I should fertilize them. I’d really like to keep them organic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have a south-facing window in my bathroom, but it's small and made of privacy glass. Will that make a difference as to which plants I can successfully grow in my bathroom?
Every 4 or 5 days. And my bathroom gets no lower than 65 usually. Most ferns could probably handle it pretty cool. Ballpark 45-50 degrees but I’d have to do more research to say for sure
Just discovered your channel and loving it. But I have no idea how 'paying rent' could be a useful measurement of time when dealing with people from all over the world. I've lived in rentals for over 20 years and I've had weekly, fortnightly, monthly and bimonthly payment lease terms.
I planted my Boston fern in LECA it took a couple of weeks but it's doing fine now. I expected a little leaf lose but it is doing much better now, haven't lost any leaves lately.
The main thing I struggle with in my bathroom is it being cold. My bathroom is bright but is also the coldest room in my house and lots of plants don't like it in there because of that. Any suggestions with that in mind?
Hi Nick, i saw in a Tuber Video a string of (without the Heart Shape) and she mentioned a care video from you. Can you please tell me the name from the String without Hearts? ;) thx a lot
Love your videos! I was wondering if you have a background in studying botany or plant biology. You seem so knowledgeable and you pronounce the scientific names like they're nothing.
I do not! It has just been a hobby-turned-career over the past 5 or so years. Not really that long at all! I simply learn from experience and research ☺️🌿
Yesssss on the air plants being sprayed and not soaked! At every nursery I've bought them they stress that I soak them for 30 min to an hour once a week . Everyone on youtube suggests the same so needless to say I killed my first 10 or 12. I finally started just misting them and BOOM success! I have a large collection now and have for over a year. When I soaked them I laid them upside down to dry on a lint free towel overnight and shook them out everytime I walked by so I did everything I was supposed to do. I think because I live in a very humid area of Alabama that soaking was just to much . Thank you for sharing that information so maybe people won't be so intimidated by them. As for me I was determined to figure out the correct care because I can't stand for a plant to whoop me so I keep trying until I figure out the plant. Thankfully I bought the little $3 -$6 dollar ones until I figured the air plants out haha Have a great weekend🌱🌿🌱🌿🌱
I have found that the easiest way to kill an air plant is to soak it. I have Spanish moss, a table fern, a large air plant and a maidenhair fern in my bathroom window.
I actually find my bathroom to be cold, and only humid immediately after a shower. Not many plants are happy in there. My kitchen is more humid than my bathroom.
Why do they sell to ctenathes as calatheas? I was at Lowe's and found this giant plant labeled as a calathea for only $14.99! After killing off a very expensive one in record time, and it was very small, I decided to buy this great big one that was so cheap. It's actually still alive and doesn't look too bad. But someone posted a picture of the same one on Facebook and said something about it being a ctenathe and how the ones at Lowe's were mislabeled. It just broke my heart because I thought I was keeping this fussy calathea alive! This really is the wrong hobby for me!
Cheryl Anne they are a close relative of the calathea along with maranta and stromanthe. I have found my ctenanthe to be almost as fussy as a calathea so you are doing a good job keeping him or her alive!!
It is likely cultivated under the name Calathea. I’ve only ever seen it on my availability lists as Calatheas and never Ctenanthe, but since I know I will sell them as Ctenanthes. Some buyers and big box may just not know better

I did not thing different. Lol. Lately, I am obsessed with mounting plants. I have been mounting my Dischidia and some hoyas. I think that I will mount my bird's nest fern. Do you find that they outgrown the mount? Do you have to water more often? I find I am having to spray them every other day.
Definitely have to water more often, but they take a while to outgrow the mounts!
Thanks Nick. Great info. 👍🏽
Thanks! 🌿
Loved this one!
Hi Nick I have a bathroom with only 1 window and I consider it low light because the window is small I am growing of course a golden pothos, varigated spider plant and a parlor palm. Thanks for the heads up about the zz plant going to have to get one.
I’m sure a ZZ would do great!
Love your videos Nick!
Thank you!! 🌿
I just heard you say you live in Philadelphia that's awesome, I live in Lancaster, pa, about 40 mins away from Harrisburg. I did not realize how close we are
Thank you Nick I am buying all new houseplants and I need to figure out what to put where. New friend Ruthie
I highly recommend Aralias for the bathroom
Good choice!! 🌿
I need one for
My bathroom which is
Low light and is pet safe
I've just ordered a crispy wave fern
Edit think you just answered my question
Plus I love the space saver for it
What moss is it and does it drip water when you water it
Could you do a video on plants that are pet safe please
I would love tips for my pineapple plants! Would they do well in a bathroom? Also, I’m not sure how or if I should fertilize them. I’d really like to keep them organic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have a south-facing window in my bathroom, but it's small and made of privacy glass. Will that make a difference as to which plants I can successfully grow in my bathroom?
How often do you water the fern on the wood blank? And how cold does your bathroom get? How low would you say ferns can be re temp?
Every 4 or 5 days. And my bathroom gets no lower than 65 usually. Most ferns could probably handle it pretty cool. Ballpark 45-50 degrees but I’d have to do more research to say for sure
I love the fern attached to the wood. How did you do that because I want it.
I have a video on DIY plant mounts you can look up!
That’s great!! I really tend to struggle with those
You’re a doll ☺️
Nick will you please start putting all genus names atleast in your information box on the videos? Thank you love your videos!!!
Nick that Ming fern I saw it growing about 6' tall in the ground outside so prepare yourself for a bigger pot!!!
Oooooooo 😅😅
The main thing I struggle with in my bathroom is it being cold. My bathroom is bright but is also the coldest room in my house and lots of plants don't like it in there because of that. Any suggestions with that in mind?
Sansevierias and ferns can handle cooler temps - but not too cold!
That's great news because my bathroom is looking really sad in comparison to the rest of my house with just 2 asparagus ferns
Lol your rent/ zz comment 🤣 love it 💚
Do you have a dinner plate Aralia? I love tips!
Hi Nick, i saw in a Tuber Video a string of (without the Heart Shape) and she mentioned a care video from you. Can you please tell me the name from the String without Hearts? ;) thx a lot
Is it String of Spades they were talking about?
@@NickPileggiPlants exactly Nick. Thx
Thank you
Help my pepermonia hope leaves are curling in half. What could it b? It got loads of new growth.
Can you put a philodendron birkin in the bathroom
Nice
Love your videos! I was wondering if you have a background in studying botany or plant biology. You seem so knowledgeable and you pronounce the scientific names like they're nothing.
I do not! It has just been a hobby-turned-career over the past 5 or so years. Not really that long at all! I simply learn from experience and research ☺️🌿
How about cobra fern?
I’ve never had success soaking! They would die so quick 😫
I have found that the easiest way to kill an air plant is to soak it. I have Spanish moss, a table fern, a large air plant and a maidenhair fern in my bathroom window.
I had two plants in my bathroom, but they got root rot! My bathroom is too humid :(
How about pothos?
Ancy Alexander yep
Pothos will probably survive almost anywhere. Easy and strong :)
I think pothos would do great!
That blue star fern looks like it’s plastic, but I like it!
Hahaha 😆 🌿
Like your information. Ming fern is the messiest fern ever. Finally had to get rid of it. I’ll stick to birdsnest.
Hahaha they can definitely be messy 😝
What hydrometers do you use?
Honestly just an inexpensive 4 pack I found on amazon
I actually find my bathroom to be cold, and only humid immediately after a shower. Not many plants are happy in there. My kitchen is more humid than my bathroom.
I actually have too much light in my bathroom to put my peperomia Rana verde. He keeps burning!
Oof! Sounds like orchids might work well for your bathroom!
Do they live with hot shower everyday.?
Why do they sell to ctenathes as calatheas? I was at Lowe's and found this giant plant labeled as a calathea for only $14.99! After killing off a very expensive one in record time, and it was very small, I decided to buy this great big one that was so cheap. It's actually still alive and doesn't look too bad. But someone posted a picture of the same one on Facebook and said something about it being a ctenathe and how the ones at Lowe's were mislabeled. It just broke my heart because I thought I was keeping this fussy calathea alive! This really is the wrong hobby for me!
by the way, great video but I don't have a window in my bathroom and I think I'm going to let the plants live in the rest of the house.
Wow the blue star fern doesn’t even look real
I have no windows in my apt. bathroom but desperately want some plants in there, oh well 😪
Try a ZZ!
he is such a cutie!
👍🏻❤️🙏
you sell plants?
First
Too bad my 2 bathrooms does not have windows 🙁
Francescadbg Have you looked into grow lights?
@@kanecurtis3215 but then you'd need to leave the lights on in the bathroom, at least 12 hours a day
Experiment with a ZZ plant!
