Rare doesn’t equal expensive imo. I’ve purchased actual rare plants, ie, not easily found, hard to purchase, for really reasonable prices, but not very popular. I think trending/expensive = rare to a lot of people.
Found out that.. “rare” means how rare it is in your area (so that’s why some people call some plants rare even that it may be common where we are). Good vibes 🪴✨
I have a variegated spathyphillum (peace lily) that is really easy to care for but doesn’t come up in plant sales very often. I just absolutely love it!

I’ve tried a few plants in pon, but a botanist friend of mine didn’t recommend it. She says that the roots that develop in pon don’t have the immunity component, as in they don’t build an immune system for the plant. therefore it makes plants weaker and more susceptible to pests, fungal issues and other disease. A lot of people show off the root systems that their plants get in pon, but a big root system is not necessarily a good thing. It’s more likely that the roots are spreading to look for what it needs to grow better
Honestly, this doesn’t make sense to me. Water roots take up nutrients just like regular roots to support the plants growth and immunity. I have botanist friends whom use semi hydro and swear by it. Personally, I haven’t found any difference in pest pressure on soil vs. PON, except fewer fungus gnats with my PON plants.
Just a differing opinion.
A plants immune system isn't based within the plants roots though? I mean, don't get me wrong, the roots themselves have a weaker immune system than in soil, but that's because a plant in soil is having to fight infection-causing bacteria significantly more than hydroponic plants, but that isn't a bad thing, it's just a sign of less environmental stress around the roots. It's the same thing with homeless people vs homeowners. Homeless people have significantly stronger immune systems than homeowners because they live in dirtier environments than homeowners. Though, you wouldn't recommend not cleaning your house, because the homeless are still more likely to fall ill than a homeowner is.
Also, A plants immunity isn't really dictated by the roots, it's dictated by the chemicals present within the leaves, as-well as cell ridgidity, both of which can be improved through semi-hydro due to the increased uptake in nutrients and water.
Going further, the roots aren't really spreading to look for what it needs to grow. If you don't have the correct fertiliser, this can happen, but with liquid gold leaf (which is what Claire uses) it has every nutrient a plant needs, and the roots are still larger and heavily branched- To me, it would seem more as if the roots themselves are capable of growing larger due to the increased air pockets, which is what the roots grow into, and not neccessarily in an attempt to find something that they're lacking.
The only thing I can see that would make them think this is the lack of Silicic acid in hydroponic fertilisers, which is known to also strengthen plants immune system and improve their overall health and resilience, but that's not really considered a nutrient, and it's completely ignored by fertilisers, so I don't really think silicic acid is really neccessary for plants?
But idk, I'm just a hobbyist and the topics difficult to grasp without years of rigorous, professional research into the topic, so you should probably take people's opinions with some salt and follow what works for you.

Regal shields are pretty common in my area. As well as the rarely seen (on TH-cam anyway) variegated Desert Roses. Both I can get for $15 at really good sizes too 👌
I get my plants from my university greenhouse! They have sales on their plants at the end of every semester, and usually feature the leftovers of propagation projects from biology students. They usually have unusual/rare plants as well; I purchased a "Drunkard's Dream Cactus" or Ripsalis salicornioides from them recently! For cheap too: lots of the plants are priced around $1-$3 per plant, with only some being around $5 if they're on the larger side.
My monstera Thai is thriving and grows like crazy but maybe because the Dutch plant sellers are generally well known and trustworthy 😊
I've heard there's two versions of the Thai going around, where one is growing great with no issues and the other one is having issues even staying rooted
I have a hoya krohiniana that climbed a moss pole of a neigboring epipremnum. Discovered it when I removed the epipremnum and pulled the hoya over

Hi Claire 💫 Thank you so much for mentioning Hoya and moss poles. I have been wondering how that would work as well being some Hoya have crazy Ariel roots but I’ve only seen them trailing or on a trellis. Thank you for trying that for curious people like me. 🙏🏻💫
The hoya latifolia i have this one. It grows quickly if you have it in lechuza Pon and mines in an incredibly bright sunny room but not in the window incase it gets burnt

as a comment to anyone considering the philo splendid, i will say, i have one and also a philo glorious, and while both are doing good on a moss pole, the splendid is way more sensitive to drying out, meanwhile the glorious right next to it didnt even blink when i forgot to water it for a bit, so if youre an underwaterer/forgetful, i would recommend the glorious more (my silver sword is also one who likes to be at least damp at all time, was a huge game changer)

Hi Claire! For your moss poles like the one of your Splendid, did you ever experience rust with the metal frame? I currently use plastic but I’m wondering if I should switch to use metal mesh.
Regal shield is definitely a win! Another easy alocasia would be the silver dragon and variegated odora. Just throw them in bright spot and they will thrive on their own. Mine do so!
I bought a baby coconut tree and there are literally 3 videos on youtube on how to take care of them in a pot. Beat that level of rarity😂 It's super cute though
These days you can be really surprised how fast yesterday rare plant become available today at markets such OBI . Last week I saw Ph. mamei, variegated monstera adansonii and some others in really discount prices. On the other hand I can see still a lot of rare hoyas available only in dedicated sale groups. A one leaf cuttings still costs a lot. Thank you for another interesting video. Good to see Ross too :)

My daughter told me a lady sounded the alarm in the Dallas Tx area for Monstera Albos available at a local supermarket. My daughter is very good at plant shopping on Etsy and I’ve been fortunate to have gotten some cuttings of her more uncommon plants like a variegated Florida beauty and Jose Buono. I love your golden dragon, the leaf shape is gorgeous! I’ve just started dabbling in Pon…so far so good. I have a Monstera cutting that seems to be loving it. It’s not the large Monstera with the huge fenestrated leaves, it’s a smaller version I found last year while visiting my daughter at college. It was so cheap at $7 for a 12” pot. I also purchased some butterfly friendly plants for my yard.
I love the Euphorbia they are such beautiful plants and the British Library has 2 books available to borrow THE SUCCULENTS OF MADAGASCAR and is well ordering from your local library.
I would say rare plants is definitely related to location. I live in an area that cannot grow tropical plants without extensive effort and that makes most plants still very expensive. I loved comparing this video to what is considered rare/expensive to my area. Most of these plants are still not obtainable in my region, let alone the price of them if you can find them. Your plants are gorgeous!! :))

My Regal Shield is in my living room with very crappy humidity ( down to 25% this summer! 😅) and it's taller than me... So yeah, that one does fine outside a cabinet! 😂

A bit surprised by your sarawak! Mine looks different - maybe a different clone? And it's a very prolific grower, my fastest growing large leaf hoya by far. From a 2 leaf cutting to 12 leaves in less than a year, and many more on the way. I find her very thirsty too, she gets watered every 5-7 days... I don't wait for her to get softer (=dehydrated) though.
Hoya Wilbur Graves still waiting to be able to get this plant where i am i love the silver variegations and splashes on it. I total agree to wait for prices to go down before getting it if you can. The prices are still ridiculous high there is this Hoya waiting to reduce the Hoya Obovata Variegated Splash. The Euphorbia Variegate so beautiful yours have grown so well. I only ever seen mini size here and the variegations isn’t that strong. Abi Bloom one of the channels i watch she had bad experience with hers kept rotting and also experienced getting one from the website bit rotten too. And parts of areas where can rot i wonder why that happens. Thank you for sharing the jewellery discount. I wear sterling silver. Just checked out the website i love all ones that looks a bit like flowers. Also i love mother of pearl jewellery. There was a ring that you wore before on your thumb like to know where you purchased look like some sort of stone.
Rare means to me that it is not readily available to the public because it is endangered or is a new discovery in the wild.
Hi plant community! I have a question about calatheas if you guys can help me! I had a major thrip infestation on my calatheas, that affected my Calathea Maui Queen. After 1,5 months of isolation and treatment she's been doing amazing and pushing out new leaves every couple of days, with no more signs of thrips. The problem is all the new growth lacks the purple underside and the caracteristical pattern on the upper side of the leaves. Did this ever happend to you?

IMO, there are the rare plants that are popular amongst the community. Then there are the rare plants no one cares about. I have a Geogenantus Peoppigii (cost me 25$CAD) which I believe is part of a fairly new genus in the house plant market and for the love of god I can't find any informative videos about this plant on TH-cam! THAT for me is what I qualify as an actual "rare" plant 😅I was struggling quite a bit with it then transfered it to pon and it's doing so well! So for any Geo PP havers - try pon. (FYI Claire, the underside of the leaves are purple in case Ross would like more plants ;) )

I already have one small variegated Frydek in pon (sent to me that way) , and two larger ones from a different shop that came in a potting mix , but I already have them mostly switched into a chunky aroid mix. I might eventually change them to semi-hydro though

Rare to me means a diamond in the ruff. It's a plant you want to have but you have to basically hurt very hard for the plant. Also, doesn't mean expensive either just not a popular plant that people want in other words on trend.
