    I would like to take a moment to sincerely and unironically thank whoever was involved in the making of the comprehensive guide on dodging.
    As a veteran gamer, most of the concepts weren't new to me, however I salute the time and effort you took to explain those concepts in the beginning of the video, as those without prior knowledge surely have been helped by it.
    But more importantly, I would like to express my appreciation for the slow motion footage and breaking down of each of the monster's moves you did, as it helps even the most veteran hunters to better understand what our visual cues for dodge timing should be.
    Monster Hunter is probably one of the most challenging game I've played when it comes to the level of precision required to successfully dodge. The way this video breaks it down feels very professional and also, artistic.

    Just a curious question about Extender though. Even though it doesn't increase your iFrames -- if dodged in the correct direction, it should reduce the amount of frames your hurtbox and the monster hitbox intersect, right?

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yes, that is correct. Extender makes it easier to dodge moves that you should "roll through" like breath attacks and tail swipes because it increases the distance that you travel. You're right in that the intersection of the iFrames and the Hitbox will be less.

  • @interneddsupreme3810
    @interneddsupreme3810 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I did my first teo nova roll yesterday! Also, evade extender might seem to be ineffective with rolling I frames, but they sorta do too.
    You are able to travel further with your I frame than if you didn't have evade extender. You demonstrated that dodging alongside jho's tail was bad because you were in jho's active hitbox. With evade extender, you can travel a bit further, which means you may be able to escape the long active I frames with the same I frames you have and evade extender.
    Thank you so much for the frame data on evade window too

    The things that have frustrated me the most with trying to learn dodge timings are the complete lack of visual cue to indicate when i-frames are active and a controlled environment to practice dodging different types of attacks, be they quick sweeps, big slams, long and short charges or explosions. The only thing you really have in the training room is the dynamite barrel...

  • @BreadFlossYum
    @BreadFlossYum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just a question about attacking instead. Does the dodges come naturally in between attacks or is it recommended to wait for the monster to start, dodge it, and attack during the opening and repeat this again? For instance the repositioning for the Deviljiho's body slam is fairly difficult to achieve when the vision is tunneled for attacking the legs with a sword and shield. So do we commit to an attack before the monster? Or do we wait for an opening by dodging first?

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That is a very good question. The short answer is that it should be a combination of both.
      At the very beginning of an engagement, you should let the monster attack first and then react accordingly. This shouldn't be that big of an issue because all monsters roar when they see you, so it is virtually impossible to do a preemptive strike unless you have earplugs.
      I would suggest checking out MaestroNox's deviljho solo to get a feel for what I mean: th-cam.com/video/v9i65cBoxQ0/w-d-xo.html
      You could see that he goes ham with attacks when Deviljho is still "locked" in his attack animation. When Deviljho's stance is neutral you could see Nox slowing down on the attacks and instead paying attention to what the next move would be. You could tell that he is doing this because you can see him actively orienting his hunter's body position so that a back hop would evade through Deviljho's attack in the opposite direction. The reason he does this is because, no, the dodge doesn't flow naturally to all monsters attacks. A lot of times the player should either delay a roll or cancel a combo just so he/she could properly position and respond to the incoming monster's attack.
      This is where experience and "feel for the game" comes in very handy. The more you fight a monster, the more you'll get accustomed to the timings of its attacks.

    Thank you for the very detailed, and informative video! I was disappointed that there weren't any good videos explaining how to use i-frames for the longest time. Please continue to make more content like this!
    I also had a question regarding the insect glaive, and earplugs. I know that the insect glaive gets additional buffs when all kinsect extraction buffs are activated, such as flinch free and earplugs. Does the insect glaive get additional roll i-frames when all kinsect extraction buffs are activated? Does the skill earplugs affect the roll i-frames when dodging a monster's roar, or does skill just soften the blow when the hunter does "nothing?"

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for supporting!
      For earplugs, it doesn't give additional iFrames, it only lessens the effect of a roar that has successfully affected the hunter. You are correct in your understanding.
      As for the IG buffs, I am no IG expert but to my knowledge there isn't a buff that increases evade window for IG, unfortunately.

    • @KymberDarkus
      @KymberDarkus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MonsterHunterPH
      Thank you for the reply!
      Makes sense that earplugs just simply lessens the effects, than giving more i-frames.
      It would probably be too powerful to add evade window along with the additional buffs you get from all three extraction buffs activated anyways. However, unless I misunderstood something from the video, are the i-frames from the aerial dodge of the insect glaive the same as the base roll? I couldn't really find a straightforward answer looking on reddit, but I did see other people mentioning that evade extender and evade window do affect the aerial dodge.
      Honestly you could make a follow-up video just adressing questions in video's comments, or an FAQ! I'm sure I won't be the only person to ask these questions in the future lol.

    • @adampalma8717
      @adampalma8717 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KymberDarkus I wouldn't say I'm an expert in all the changed buffs, but I believe that the IG buff of giving you earplugs was taken out in MHW. It seems to me that you no longer have earplugs when you have all 3 colors. It makes it a little different in how you play IG, but if you're good at evading the monsters' attacks, you should still be fine; personally, it was more of a backup for me in the previous games in case I messed up my evade rather than something I relied on to automatically give me earplugs.
      Essentially, I chose to practice my dodging, even with the automatic earplugs, in case of 1) I messed it up, 2) the monster had a higher level of earplugs necessary to block it that the IG didn't give (e.g. Tigrex's roar), 3) I wasn't using IG, and/or a combination of all three.

    @jimjim9405 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Extender might not grant more iFrames but it boosts how much distance you dash during the timing of the animation. Ergo, a faster dodge, ergo, easier dodges through attacks. Combining evasion window and extender allows you to pass through attacks you normally can't.

    Everytime I see a video like this I want to drop my L/GL shield and play Switch Axe. Then I go and try for myself and eat every single one of these attacks. I just don't understand how it works in MH compared to Soulslikes for example.
    On Elden Ring I can roll towards anything at the right moment and the I-Frames protect me from anything. Here no matter how small the part of the monster is the hitbox is just massive and hits me anyway. Is not clear if I have to jump before the attack animation starts or right when it is going to hit.
    I've also tried with EW5 and while it feels a bit better the only safe way to evade a hit is to be faaar away from it which is the reason I prefer EE3.
    My fault I guess. Back to tanking.

  • @TheRealXartaX
    @TheRealXartaX 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think extender makes you roll further in the same amount of time? Hence it basically speeds up your dodge as well. Which means it's easier to things, even if the duration is the same. Because you can clear the hitbox faster. You can think of it like making each count as more frames, in a way.
    For example lets say you have 10 s, and you increase your range by 20%. That means those 10 s will move you as far as 12 s normally would before you can take damage. So while you have 10 s, you effectively dodge as if you have 12 s. So it's pretty relevant as it will impact all dodges except for the ones where you stay inside the hitbox for the entire dodge (but the hitbox deactivates before your s do).

    I may be wrong in this, but I think one aside to touch on is how Exhaust affects hit-boxes as well. Can you confirm on this assumption?: Sometimes, I almost feel like it's more hazardous to deal with tired/hungry monsters because their animations are slowed, thus their active hitboxes last longer.
    At least in the case with big AOE/hitbox monster like Behemoth, there are so many times where I feel like I've been hit with a move simply because their attack hitbox "last longer" -- notable example is the gore/pin attack that has a VERY long active hitbox and is especially so when he's in Exhausted state.

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for bringing this up. This is actually 100% accurate. Diablos' double head swing cannot be i-framed when he is exhausted because it moves significantly slower. I am not too sure about behemoth's gore but you may be correct in that one too.

    • @MonsterHunterPH

      Not entirely true. I'm 32 years old and I have an average reaction time of 0.22 seconds which is actually pretty bad.
      The trick is to learn the initial tell of a monster so you can anticipate the attack coming. Its not about timing the dodge when you are about to get hit, rather it is about anticipating when the attack is about to hit by looking at the monster's body language.

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For console, you do get less iFrames if you're playing under 30FPS, but don't worry, because you still get the same real-life time period for the dodge invincibility.
      On PC at 60FPS
      iFrame 13 / 60FPS = 0.216667 seconds
      On PS4 at 30FPS
      iFrame 6.5 / 30FPS = 0.216667 seconds
      As you can see, the iFrames are less but the actual time in seconds is just exactly the same.

    Is the timing affected by your FPS? say you have uncapped FPS and are running at 80 FPS, would that reduce your window?

    • @MonsterHunterPH
      @MonsterHunterPH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. The answer is weird but the higher your FPS is, the more iFrames you also get.
      BUT, it doesn't affect how long the actual invincibility duration is in terms of real-life time.
      A regular roll is 13 frames in 60 FPS. If you have 120 FPS, the iFrame becomes 26 frames. If you have 30 FPS, you have 6.5 iFrames.
      However, 6.5/30, 13/60 and 26/120 will always give you 0.216667 seconds. No matter how much your computer's FPS count is, you will always have 0.216667 seconds of invincibility.

    I just bought MHW with IB last month, and it hasn't been fun getting stuck fighting Barioth as a Dual Blades.
    I've been thinking "should I learn the i-frames to approach at the risk of hating the game from constantly losing to Barioth?", and keep deciding that I should be upgrading my gear instead and not care about the i-frames because there is no safety net after trying to i-frame, so any attempts to get better with DB against Barioth would be filled with even more mistakes and causing more stress.
    I didn't think that that i-frame window for rolls and Demon Dash is was short, tbh, considering how long the roll animation is.

    One thing to note: it is generally preferable to NOT use s when dodging attacks, because if you manage to avoid an attack simply moving away from it by rolling earlier, you gain more "frame advantage", that being more time to counter-attack the monster, since you recovered earlier from your roll.

      Having player with hundreds of players online, that couldnt be farther from the truth! Heck, even pro players fail to i-frame through roars and stuff every now a then..
      Proper positioning and exploiting the limitations of AI definitely do not take more skills, not even close (even if they did, they're not as satisfying)

    • @tamago9026
      @tamago9026 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wallacesousuke1433 My last statement was definitely hyperbole. Most players can't perfectly roll through most things, so them doing so is impressive. But "pro" players or speedrunners, even though they sometimes misstime a roll, consistently dodge most things perfectly (9/10 times), and the few times where they do get hit is more often than not the result of a trade from a lengthy recovery or the result of attempting something much riskier than a simple roll.
      Exploiting the limitations of AI is much more compelling because it requires much more creative and "outside the box" thinking than simply defaulting to "just roll the attack", and often requires godly positioning that takes considerably more skill than iframing an attack. For top players, perfectly rolling everything is a norm, it's not an "achievement", it's an expectancy; what differentiates them is their ability to find small optimizations in creative ways through their knowledge of the ai, to get that extra hit in on that specific punish.
      th-cam.com/video/DXQpG4T5b14/w-d-xo.html
      The 52 second mark of this video illustrates this, the player could have just simply rolled inside the ice wall, got 1 or 2 minor hits in or a charged hit during velk's recovery, but he instead positions himself perfectly in between the two walls and gets a tcs off. The positioning is much more subtle than timing a roll, and imo this is considerably more satisfying, on top of being objectively more optimal dps wise (its also sick af). This sort of crazy stuff happens all the time in top level play and its what makes high level monster hunter play so interesting to watch, the different ways to push the ai's limits as much as you can in your favor. To each their own though, just wanted to clarify my perspective.

      @Mister_Taxman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily, my friend. I find parrying in souls games much, much more difficult because of one thing: the enemy's attack animation.
      For MonHun, almost every attack the monster will do will be highly telegraphed. Here are a few examples:
      - A monster will do a tail swipe after you see it curve its body sideways with him looking a bit to the side.
      - A monster will do a bite after you see it reel its head back a bit.
      - A monster will do a lunge after you see it crouch a bit.
      - There is always a special animation before a monster roars (except Yian Garuga lol).
      There are many more tells and this is something all players can try and familiarize themselves with when practicing i-framing.
      P.S. I have a reaction time of more than 200ms. The average gamer has around 150ish. All it takes is practice and familiarity, I'm sure you can do it too.
