      The Firebird was part of my halftime show back in the days of yore when marching and grades were my life. As a whole, we were gat-dang good at this. No one came to the games for the football, they came for the band. Mars, Venus, and Firebird... Our magnum opus that had the power to leave grown ass adults screaming and cheering through tears. We loved what we did, and it showed. To this day, all these years later, I still know my part and get a little misty eyed when I hear this immense piece.

    I won't lie, I rarely to never cry to movies, even as a kid. But when I first saw "Fantasia 2000" at nearly 20 years old, the ending when the little sprite restored life to the land, that made me cry tears of joy. That's extremely rare, in my entire life. Well played, Disney.

    Walt Disney described the art of animation as:
    “A Voyage of Discovery,
    into the Realms of Colour, Sound and Motion.”
    The music from Igor Stravinsky’s ballet:
    “The Firebird Suite - 1919 Version,”
    inspires such a voyage.
    And so, we conclude this version of Fantasia,
    with a mythical story of life, death and renewal.

    What I like about this piece is that, it reminds us that nature isn't all growing plants, cute little animals, and gentle flowing rivers. It's also merciless, impartial, wanton death and desolating destruction. But that, even in the wake of such ruinous destruction...life can and will always rise from the ashes.

    I've loved Fantasia since I was kid. Listening to this music again as an adult, and this particular piece just hit me for some reason. The climax of the piece (and the associated visual representation in the film, of course) gives me such a beautiful feeling of hope. That's what the firebird legend is about; out of ashes there eventually comes renewal and beauty. Just a beautiful concept of life to consider and its incredible how Stravinsky captured it through such artful music.

      @Eorzat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is actually based on the 1919 version (even shown in the description), so it’s actually about half the length of the original version. Stravinsky revised the suite in 1945 and doubled it in length compared to the 1919 version. The 1945 version is the one commonly performed now which is probably the confusion. But, yes, I think the 1919 version is much better than the 1945 one.

    For anyone/everyone saying how much they love this music, have you considered listening to the entire work?
    Heck, even listen to just the parts here, UNABRIDGED? Yes, these are not the musical segments in full, they have been significantly shortened, and honestly, for any classical musical purist, that is pure anathema.
    I am here because it's a great recording, James Levine is a fantastic conductor, his performance of the Pines of Rome is possibly the best I have heard, but it's definitely abbreviated as well.

I'm not a fan of Rite of Spring either lol especially the ballet, because as a ballerina of 20 years, I hate that the entire choreography goes completely against all the principles and technique of ballet... but yes I much prefer this one than Rite of Spring. I've always preferred music much more melodic like this
