I agree that Methuselah is probably a figment of Will's imagination but if he was a hermit on Great Bear before the first flare, as he mentions he was a "walker", he probably knew some shortcuts to get where we see him. Also Methuselah probably knew better than to go near Blackrock, again assuming he's real which I doubt.
The thing is he was still able to avoid the regular wolves, aurora wolves, and the old bear. It's hard to believe he knew what to do in those situations, especially if the wolves are not behaving normally. There is still something off when it comes to that.
I agree that Methuselah is not real. I like to think that its the spirits of the Great Bear island helping to guide him across his journey and judging his actions along the way.
I don't think he is a spirit. There is nothing going on in the game that is supernatural. It is all very much based on science. Even a hallucination can be proven through science and medicine.
@@ToastyBits I didnt mean that I dont agree with your explanation. In fact I think youre right about Methuselah. What I mean is that the game atmosphere makes me sometimes feel like Im being watched and judged by spirits. (Even thought I know that is not the case.)
I am inclined to agree. Even though the wildlife's aggressiveness has its in game and gameplay reasons an aurora cannot "supercharge" wolves and such. My personal headcannon is that the aurora and all that follows is some sort of reaction by the island itself kinda like the immune system reacting to a pathogen with a fever. The island made itself unlivable for those that try to take advantage of it whether that be through mining, deforestation, and the off shore fishing operations. Btw I don't agree with toasties response primarily because of the darkwalker or whatever its called in that one mode where your being chased by a Wendigo looking creature. Clearly we are not actually being guided by spirits but as someone that has an uncommon view on spiritual stuff in real life the game does an oddly great job at emulating the feeling I get out in nature. It feels like the island doesn't just deserve, but expects an amount of reverence.
@ethangoddard4592 I agree the glowing wildlife during aruroras is kind of dumb and doesn't serve a realistic purpose. The island isn't alive though. The first flare isn't a response from the island. The auroras are created by solar storms, which are so powerful sometimes that they are seen from further away from the poles than normal. This has happened in real life recently. The more powerful First Flare is just an ultra powerful solar flare that EMP'd the planet and fried the power grid. It had some lingering effects as well, which we see in game. All of this has science to back it up, except for the growing animals and the aurora hum sound. Also, the Darkwalker is not real nor is it canon to the game's lore. It is just a challenge they made up for fun. There are no spirits wandering around, but there can certainly be that feeling like something is guiding you like an angel. That is kind of what Methuselah is for, but he is definitely not a spirit.

Tales from the far territory spoilers ahead ... ... ... ... ... ... ... What if he is the foreman? His glasses are from the 1980s, which means he could be a survivor of Rüdiger's project. He is an experienced explorer, as he tracked Rüdiger throughout the far territory, including unforgiving areas. He wanders seemingly without purpose: is he slowly recovering from the machine's desease, unable or unwanting to rejoin civilization? After all these years on Great Bear he would know many shortcuts and would be able to travel faster between the regions. Is he aware of some kind of connection between Rüdiger's knowledge, the decline of Great Bear and the silent apocalypse? It would be an interesting story to hear.
I don't think so. It is very unlikely. ... Every person that was affected by the machine, whether if it was a short or long period, would eventually succumb to the effects. Methuselah does not exhibit any signs of the project. There are 2 survivors of the outbreak that lived up to 40 years after. Even they had pretty severe symptoms. There are no cases of someone recovering, so we can't assume Methuselah is a case of someone recovering from that illness. Methuselah is pretty sound of mind, so I don't think he is or was suffering from any kind of notable mental deterioration.
@@ToastyBits This is convincing. Still, I can't wait to see how wintermute and TFTFT will blend together in ep.5, if they do at all. ... The characters are also different, a hitman vs. a merciful heremit. It may be too much of a long shot.
@paglion definitely check out the Langston Mine and Perseverance Mills outbreak videos if you want to know how I connected the tales and Wintermute together.
I think this is probably right. I doubt Methuselah is or ever was meant to be a hallucination. I think he was just meant to be a spooky weirdo like Grey Mother. Everyone is cryptic. It’s just the game’s atmosphere. I think with Tales we will see a more direct connection in episode 5 of Winter Mute, and a Methuselah reveal would fall in line with that. If he’s been stomping around the island for 40 years evading wolves and bears would be easy.
Great video! Here are some of my thoughts When Methuselah says "This has happened before' I actually think of the Biblical Flood, a disaster that wiped away the majority of humanity, leavining behind only a few survivors Also i agree I don't think Methuselah isn't a person but I'm not wholly sold on him not being real at all. Long Dark is fairly grounded in reality but there are a few more 'supernatural' things that occur and I always got the impression that Methuselah was a kind of guardian angel, either an actual angel or some surviving remnant of another apocalypse, remaining to guide Will through this quiet apocalypse. You have a good point about him showing up after Will is hit on the head but I think that also correlates to my own idea: he shows up when Will is hurt and needs help and no one else is around to give it.
He explicitly says that the apocalypse he is talking about is not religious, so the first one can't refer to anything biblical. When I look at the lore for the game, I avoid all religious, mythological, or superstitious topics out of it. The game is purely grounded in science and science fiction. I don't see Methuselah as a guardian angel or a ghost of any kind.
Maybe when the plane crashes will dies on impact and his body falls through the windscreen. And the game is his journey to the afterlife. And methuselah is his guide
methuselah could be wills father beause in the beginning in ep 1 you can see a picture with wills father and will said that he misses him so maybe thats why they look alike
I looked at the photo at the start of the game and he doesn't look like Methuselah at all. Will's father has a shorter white beard, while Methuselah has a much longer grey beard.
@@ToastyBits Could be just lot of filth (maybe Coal, which would prove that hes a hermit, as hermits live in cave also theres a place in Milton where we first meet him called abandoned hermits camp, which could be where he comes from). Methuselah looks like a hobo after all and when i dont clean my beard in some time, its starts changing colour according what i eat.
You can't prove that's why the beard is a different color. He doesn't look dirty at all. It would be really hard to tell if that was the case. It's highly unlikely it's his father. His father has nothing to do with the story in any way. Astrid mentions that the plane was his father's, but that is it. Without picking up the picture, which is optional, there is no major mention of him in the story.
Metheusela, son of Enoch, grandfather to Noah, lived 969 years. And in biblical studies, it's said that upon Metheusela's death, God would judge man for his ungodliness, enter the floods and Noah's story. So he's definitely not alive. But Will must have some biblical education to hallucinate this mythological man. It's definitely plausible that it's Will's means of coping with his situation, or a struggle to make sense of the "End of days". But I think it's also a good method for the game to insert some mystery and mythology into the setting, as well as a way to build a sense that the world has ended, and civilization has been reset, which is a story all too familiar in the history of mankind. Many civilizations have come and gone. But there were always few left to rebuild the world. It's a great narrative to set in a game, especially when it adds a connection with mankind's past. Another layer of context to deepen your thinking of the weight of what's unfolding in the game. I think it's marvelous and thank you for covering Methusela. Great video!
Why are you commenting this on the Methuselah video? Either way, maybe. Patient 7 was pretty far gone in his last interview. We don't know how Sam or the other survivor made it an additional 40 years, but there must be something that happened in between that we don't know about.
