she has an astonishing touch and technique on the keyboard that I have rarely heard; a one in a billion talent. Her interpretations are beautiful and as she experiences the darker sides of life, those interpretations will surely grow in emotional depth. I don't doubt that 50 years from now she will be considered among the greatest pianists of all time.
expressrobkill - Not true, as a pianist myself (although not every pianist can tell) you can tell from a passionate and musical player vs just a musician that has amazing technique but no musical element to their playing, just knows how to play the notes perfectly.
i play the piano to, and have no idea how to read more than a simple crotchet quaver, i play by ear but i still understand having practised for 2 year's that i would have to play several more years in order to be as farmiiar as she is with the keyboard, changing up music is easy so is creating songs if you play by ear, if i played as much as her those songs would come easy.
I once had a friend who joked that he never wanted to play on a piano that I had just played Chopin on, because it looked like I had had an orgasm during playing....
I'm sure it did, but I've seen creepier classical performers. I'd go so far as to say that the better the performance, the more you don't want to watch the musician's face or body movements lol. At conservatory, a lot of professors were in the habit of closing their eyes while listening, a habit I've adopted. It also enhances your sense of hearing by uncluttering one's mind from visual inputs.
Wow, she is a real prodigy with gorgeous personality, so far going through her musical progress on TH-cam I have enjoyed her musicality, maturity. She is a master of this century. Thank you Umi for sharing your talent.
Umi, you can be proud of you. You are born for music. You will still have many wonderful experiences and many people enjoy with "your" wonderful music. Thank you Umi.
Young Lady Umi Garret! Since 2 years I'm following You on TH-cam. At first: Thank You so much for Your appearance! When I see and hear You I am really happy about Your development! I hope that You continue taking advice by Your parents and teachers, never forgetting that You Yourself are a great, big person and musician with own meanings! I am really excited - Your little Mozart-Accademy was really beautiful. All the best for You! Jürgen Voigt, old German Musician
Oh my... to think of the life she has ahead of her; the experiences, the loves, the let-downs and the joy of giving her best to others - makes most lives seem boring! How blessed she is to have had the nurturing from such a young age. She will no doubt have some tales to tell as she goes through life as a technically and musically perfect pianist. To see the level of musicianship, loyalty to the craft and sheer talent she has, gives me goose bumps. I would love to hear her in concert!
Amazing, not only the technique but she can express her feeling well into her playing. We can see when she play Mozart, we can say that she change the tempo, but her feeling is change too and it make us can feel her emotion she creates.
amazing how these class musicians allow you to see images in your head about past experiences and how you see future things as you watch them....and make you also feel a spectrum of emotions on how they move.....brilliant
She describe the power of music and is 100% true! I can't play piano or any other instruments. But, music is beyond my personal feelings. God bless her.
I love classical music, but as a life-long English, public speaking, communications fan, I love to hear great talented people talk about their trade. I realize that not everybody can do that. When I was in radio, I interviewed people who were very poor speakers. This young lady has a great future in TEDS and other venues. What an extremely lovely dress she was wearing.
“Since then my goal has been become a pianist to help others” what a beautiful feeling! Umi is talented, but generous and sweet as well. How refreshing.
What an skillful and beautiful performer! It's clear that Umi knows the secret of the music-i the joy of playing, exploring her full range of emotions through this powerful demonstration. She models with precision and grace her passion for the piano and shares her incredible gift. One with the music, her compassionate soul shines through with every note. Thank you.
is is very close to the way Umi looks today, We had the privilege to see her performance this evening in Marshfield, Coos Bay, Oregon. He performance was just marvelous. She's a remarkable talent and a joy to watch play the piano,
Every note is special, compared to each person on Earth. Each different personalities and individuality, yet completes the harmony in the world, because of each person's existence. Living, is Art and it is Music. :) She is really a great pianist, I love how passionate she plays the piano. She has a big heart, playing for many people especially with her cause to share her love for Music, to people recovering from Tsunami. She is really beautiful! I'm so blessed to see her on TH-cam! It's a treasure to find a great person as her! :D Go! UMI! Love you!
Beautifully played... Even more amazing the feeling to see her performing life... 🤗 Thank you Mui, you are an angel from heaven the world so long needed ⚘ can't wait to hear your own creations ❤
Baroque music is my favourite genre of music (Baroque music, a style of European music that prevailed during the period from about 1600 to about 1750, known for its grandiose, dramatic, and energetic spirit but also for its stylistic diversity.)
I'm glad to hear musicians exploring the different interpretations possible for a set of notes. I loved Liberace because he would do this exact thing - play Mozart in a boogy-woogy style or the Orange Blossom Special as a Bach fugue. It enhances both the intellectual and the emotional aspects of music.
Makes me think back to when I was a kid and started learning how to play instruments. Music has changed my life tbh. I’m at the point where I always have a bass or guitar with me. Idk man, sometimes you you just the urge and have to play something. Classical or not, it’s a great way of self expression and just having fun in general.
UMI, THAT WAS AMAZING!!! You have improved A LOT on your interpretation, they're more mature, I kinda don't wanna say this but, I used to not enjoy much your performances even though I was so impressed with your technique (I couldn't believe you could play well Gnomenreigen at 9) but I've witnessed through these years that your performances are getting better and better, and now I am so excited, I enjoyed them A LOT, I'm so happy right now =P! Chopin was perfectly played, I can hear in your performance what the conductor told you, that "every note is special". About your Op. 10 No. 4...THAT WAS AMAZING! You made me feel shivers! It was so powerful! About the piano, I didn't like it for the last piece, seems like it is too new (it sounds muted/mellow)...but it sounded great for the nocturne. It was interesting to hear your breath while playing the piano! I loved it. As always, you look so beautiful and I love you haven't lost your charm, you still fun =D! I also believe that music has power to change humanity, and I thank you for sharing it! You are such an incredible human being, I am so happy to meet you! Hope I can meet you in person someday, it'd be AWESOME. Thank you TEDx for sharing the video! UMIPIANO.
Personal expression is a powerful way to convey a piece of music to the audience. Even a Mozart Sonata in a minor Key can sound happy / sad depends on how it is played. Once met Scott Houston, an American who later hosted the shows "The Piano Guy" & "Piano in a Flash" on PBS. He considered Classical music to be uncreative & too rigid on following rules. He encouraged people who want to start playing piano later in life to get into Jazz or Pop music because these styles allow players to improvise (add & alter notes) along the way.
She is so talented that it's a real pleasure to hear her play. Thank you very much for the joy you provide us your loyal followers and admirers. BTW, I think that that kind of dress goes a lot better with a very young lady like you ... the long and dressy ones are nice but nearly as becoming ...
She plays very lovely! It sounds very classy, elegant with much finesse! I wish I can play like how she does. Music is speaking to the soul and spirit. She is very blessed! :)
***** I've played piano for several years. "it's not hard to get over 20 notes a second" what you're saying is just straight up horse shit, with due respect. It's not anywhere near as easy as what you're insinuating it to be. You need to practice ALOT of scales for a good period of time before you can get to that point. Also, "You will with most classical pieces" Lmfao are you on crack or something? Get outta here dude hahaha
***** Lol just because its only 2 classical pieces that you play doesn't equate to the same thing as "with most classical pieces". So clearly you're a narcissist if you think what you play is the center of the universe like that
+Dinkelstein Kerman I'm currently a piano performance major and have been playing and studying piano for 13 years. Not many pieces I have ever seen have had 20 or more notes per second. That's completely BS. Sorry but It seems you have no idea what you're talking about.
What a talent, what a performer, what an unassuming person. She has it all and I'm thrilled she shares it with the rest of us.
dhy5342 shes asian. Thats why.
She worked hard, that's why.
"Can u hear the happiness?~" gosh she precious!!! Love how she still laugh as she did when she's 10☺️
She'll be one hell of a Master. The music is already a part of her completely. it's wondeful

Her finesse and maturity of interpretation is well beyond her years. Very impressive!

kismetcapitan actually it's a Steinway
calm down dude if you were forced to practise everyday since you were 4 it would be like learning a language, you'd have Mozart coming out your ass.

Thats how i sound playing Bts anything else sounds like trash
Umi Garrett gives me hope for the future of humanity. She is just magnificent!
You can recognize people who are really feeling the music they're playing with the moves they make and how heavy they breathe.
I once had a friend who joked that he never wanted to play on a piano that I had just played Chopin on, because it looked like I had had an orgasm during playing....
kismetcapitan I guess you've felt the music a lot then. Probably too much, I guess that looked creepy.
I'm sure it did, but I've seen creepier classical performers. I'd go so far as to say that the better the performance, the more you don't want to watch the musician's face or body movements lol. At conservatory, a lot of professors were in the habit of closing their eyes while listening, a habit I've adopted. kismetcapitan Yeah, a lot of people agree on that.
this is the best comment i've ever read. rolf

I love it when musicians like her get their emotions to move with the flow of the music.
She is one of the world's finest treasures
You're right, Umi. There were feelings I had never felt until seeing your performances. You've taught me how to enjoy music. Thank you.

Amazing job! I'm your same age, and trust me, I could never get up there to give such a speech and play such amazing music!! LOVED IT!
“Since then my goal has been become a pianist to help others” what a beautiful feeling! Umi is talented, but generous and sweet as well. How refreshing.

For a pianist like myself, I could relate so much on expressing your feelings on the sound that comes from the keys of the piano.
Umi is exceptional in her talent. She totally understands what the music is saying. She is very gifted...and makes me feel the music in my soul. ♫

Maybe there is hope for mankind after all. Thank you for this wonderful performance.
AWESOMEEEE!! I NEEED TO DESPERATELY SEE HER CONCERTS!! YOU CAN REALLY FEEL THE LIFE IN THIS.

The thing I love about her is that she is so humble.
This gives me hope in humanity. Wonderful talent!
What a brilliant human being! Thank you for your passion!
Great talent in the making ! Such a genius child !! So humbled to hear her thoughts on becoming a pianist for humanitarian cause
Overwhelming !! Charming and talented young lady not to mention poised and intelligent.

I love you, Umi!
That is so greatfull to know that the world have this beautifull minds
Her technique for her age is pretty impressive. Her talk maybe not so much, it was more suit to someone who's just got into classical music.
As a pianist you would be speaking your feelings through the piano
