    I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
    Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
    My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.

    You keep referring to the "positive wire" on the coil. Isn't that a ground wire? I'm not trying to be snarky, I am trying to learn small engine repair.

    • @NitroGuyJH
      @NitroGuyJH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken when you turn the ignition switch off that wire essentially is grounded. There will be no positive voltage on those two wires, or at least there shouldn’t be unless you have further issues. Kohler does make a 2 wire and 3 wire coil setup on some of their older command series that’s referred to as a SAM module meaning Speed Advancement Module. It advances and retards the ignition timing depending on engine rpm and load and there is a ground wire, 12v positive, and a signal wire on those coils.

      - Now you know! It's called " Electrical Leakage ". During usage, the Module gets " hot ". In the Module, the Wires might melt through time and it create a small shortage / electrical leaks. This would make the Module weak, since electricity find the closes ground to get to. :)

      Some modules use a microprocessor to advance the ignition timing for high rpms. Sometimes that can go bad and make the engine run terrible at full throttle. Though the opposite was happening here in which the engine was running poorly on low throttle.

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because of Dual Coil! They don't catch each other soon enough... One Coil over worked the Other, that is when you see this Problem. V-Twins are the worst.... Although they did it to gain extra Power, but the concept of it sucks. So many People have these problems because of V-Twins. Only way to fix this is to have a Distributor Cap..., like in the Cars / Trucks. But since this is a small Engine, no point of have a Distributor Cap.

It was popping and backfiring, I adjusted the valves exactly according to specs and still have issues when it gets hot. Sounds alot like this engine did but it doesn't hesitate?? Do you think it's the coil on it or do I need to check the valves again?

      At this point I have 3 suggestions. First maybe a plugged jet in the carberator, or the float is stuck open. Oem new is about 80 Dollars US. EBay has sufficient aftermarket carburetor for any where from about 12 on up. I usually get the money 20 to 30 dollar replacements. 2nd would be the coil. 3rd would be the safety shut off switch on the bottom of the seat. Those do go out occasionally. Plenty of videos on repair or replacement.

      It's a " Positive " coming out of that Coil. You are using the Wire to " Ground " it. So People calling it " Kill Wire / Ground Wire ". But in reality, it's a " Positive " that you are referring to.

      If those wires are positive then unplug them, then start the mower, it’ll run just fine, then if you still think they’re positive wires, run a 12V lead from the battery and hook it to the coils, see how well they work afterwards

    • @robertchaffee5662

      @@donyboy73 actually it's a switched ground wire. The magnet flying by the coil produces the electricity to the spark plugs. When the coil is grounded as when switched (off) it feeds (shorts the coil to ground) grounding the coil, preventing it from producing electricity to the spark plug ('s).

    I have the same surging and popping problems. No backfire.. I have the coils in the mail to me with feeler gauge but I wanted to post my experience as a WARNING to all
    It was taking the top fan guard off my Deere X320 and the three screws were really hard to move. I found a torxs bit and removed 2 screws but then the bit fell out of my screwdriver and into the engine area. I could not see it. Job stopped. I had the ‘genius’ idea to start the engine so the vibration would roll the missing bit out onto the floor. The guard (10inches and round) was held by one screw.
    WELL the screw held but the centrifugal force spun the guard and ripped the guard to shreds and it flew
    It smashed the air cleaner cover, then ripped the choke cable out , then hit the battery and made a big hole in it so acid came out onto the concrete and made a choking gas, then it continued and hit my groin area and made a hole in my jeans and missed my crown jewels by two inches.
    It’s a large graze but superficial. No blood. I have bought a new guard for $30 and bought a used plastic air cleaner cover on ebay…and a new battery
    I have bought 3 new screws at 6mm with Philips heads this time. I used an adapter on my socket set with a big Phillips bit to get em in HARD. Coils expected in 7 days
    I took the cable control levers to pieces…complex but I figured it. Carb end : TH-cam said the top hole is the choke wire, but there are 3 holes and it is the top hidden one .The throttle hole is lower than that and is the middle one of the three.
    Ok rebuilt it all and it started first time but he popping is still there. I am very hopeful the coils will fix it…
    Yes I swapped out the spark plugs and air filter for fun….
    Phew I could have been blinded or killed….. CAREFUL with the hood off guys ! ps when I take the guard off to get in for the new coils, I will replace the screws using blue thread sealer..

    It’s a Troy Bilt what did they expect. Their products are total garbage. Very surprised that the engine is a Kohler. My Toro has a Kohler and it’s an awesome engine.

    Smashing, that customer will notice a hell of a difference :-D
    I had forgotten about breaking down ignition coils, so easy to forget when we don't repair engines all the time like you do, good thing you teach us again :-D
    I suppose the insulation on the coil must crack with heat and the odd spark escapes to a lower potential coil winding, no spark for the eht cable :-(

    Thanks for this excellent video.
    I always thought a coil was either good or dead but I learned the hard way and from this video that is not necessarily so.
    I tested both coils on my V twin and both were in spec.
    Like you, I initially thought the carb was the problem, but even a new carb didn't fix it.
    My engine was surging badly and would backfire as well.
    It wasn't until I saw this vid and I got a spark tester that I was finally able to diagnose the problem as a bad coil
    I have a lot less hair now but with the help from your video I FINALLY got it fixed.

    You can make a spark tester with an old plug wire from a car. Cut about 3 inches off each end and join ogether with a piece of clear tubing . Leave about a 1/4 inch gap

      Easiest way to test for safety switch or ignition switch problem is to disconnect them.
      If it starts and runs while disconnected, you have a switch problem (seat,clutch/break,blade engage, ignition ect.)

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a " Positive " coming out of that Coil. You are using the Wire to " Ground " it. So People calling it " Kill Wire / Ground Wire ". But in reality, it's a " Positive " that you are referring to.

      Those wires ground the coils when the ignition is turned off, killing the spark. Works just like smaller engines that have the ground wire on the throttle lever. When moved to stop position, the wire is grounded killing the spark.

    I don't have a tractor lawn mower, but a push mower instead. It's a Troy-Bilt TB110 with the Briggs & Stratton 550EX-Series non-primer engine. It pops some light-black-looking gas through the exhaust after I shut it down, but usually only right after engine oil changes. It also has hesitation when mowing, and when I leave it running with out cutting the grass, the entire mower jerks from side to side due the momentum from the uneven engine speeds. And, I don't know if this has affected anything, but the first time this mower was used, we accidentally set it too low of a height and the engine stalled out along with tons of thick grey smoke coming out the muffler pipe. The engine oil immediately turned grey after that incident. Is there anything that I can do to fix it? EDIT: I also hear some clanging/dinging sounds from the engine when mowing the grass. I'm already assuming the worst, but I hope someone can confirm it.

    "COMMON SENSE"??? Common sense only comes from experience and mistakes; no experience, no mistakes, no common sense. I started working on mowers when I was 62, and had no common sense about them because I had never worked on them. Now one year later, I have accumulated a lot of common sense about mowers because I have worked on about ten of them doing all the basics - engine timing, carb. cleaning and adjustment, valve adjustments, valve cleaning, gasket replacements, diagnosing, kill switch repairs, flywheel removal and key replacement, head removal and cleaning, gas tank cleaning, ground fault repairs, bolt torquing, coil diagnosing and replacement, valve seat repair, and more.
    A lot of my common sense also comes from watching and learning from great mower mechanics like you, Dony Boy, and a FEW other really good ones on TH-cam. Thank you.

    Hey Dony , I have taken ownership an MTD ride on mower with a 4P90JUA engine in it.
    The previous owner over filled with oil... they heard a slight bang and smoke...
    I have removed the spark plug, turned the engine over to get rid of any oil in the cylinder... cleaned up the spark plug, made sure it sparked...
    When turning the engine over, there is smoke puffing out the air filter, and fuel spraying out...
    What seems to be the problem here??
    TIA
    Jess

    I have a Briggs & stratton 10HP engine on a Snapper 28" mower, my mower will not start with that positive (stop, ground) wire connected to the coil. It will start, run long time then I have to connect the wire to kill the engine. The engine will die with the key in the on position. Also the engine runs very well for an hour or more, then if the engine is shut off, it will not immediately restart, have to wait a few hours till it is cold.

    Quess what donyboy, i broked my Briggs lawn mower pull cord today. Well it lastet almost 50 years, so it's time to get new cord in it. It happened because there was tall grass and few smashed apples wich choked the mower, and when i started to pull that starting cord, it snapped. Well i'm gonna watch that video where you fix the pull cord in old Toro rototiller with 5hp Briggs engine. Lets see if i learn anything.

    I have a Toro self pace lawnmower with electric start. Less than 20 hours use since new last summer. Difficult to start after running for say 20 minutes. Dealer says nothing wrong with the mower however should not be difficult to start at any time. When cold fires right up.

    Positive wire on the coil? Not on a mag coil it is a kill wire. Ok you explained it later. But I would call it a kill wire that way someone don't put 12 volts to it.
