Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio - Better than an M3 or C63 ?!

  • The Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio is a racing car in saloon car clothing and had simply THE best steering feel of any car I've driven. Thanks to the owner Eddie, I get to drive my first Alfa and experience the impressive all round performance of this Italian M3 slayer ! Amazing staight line performance, superb turn in and balance through the corners and one of the best feeling semi-auto gear changes out there !
    Thanks to Eddie for letting me drive his beautiful car and for giving such great insight into ownership. I tried my best to get him on camera !!

    I drove one of these at the weekend. I now want one. It’s a serious sports car disguised as a saloon car. The ride is lotus-like, steering razor sharp, engine magnificent and you wouldn’t really know it’s turbocharged. No lag to speak of, just masses of thrust that builds into a fantastic crescendo. The Germans can’t do driving excitement like this.

    • @PetrolPed

      For me it's the steering that is the most impressive thing :-)

    You drive an Alfa with your heart and not your head, it's a feeling you cannot describe. Thankfully, the newer ones have substance to back it up with too.

    Interesting number plate.
    Lets hope this car gets Alfa back on the right track.
    So much cooler than a BMW or Merc, and people won't hate you...lol

    Nice video. I test drove this car last month and have yet to stop thinking about the sheer joy I felt throughout my time behind the wheel. The last time I felt that much fun driving a car? Driving a Ferrari 458. So, yes, I agree with your comment about the steering! I love this Alfa!

    bought the 280 hp gas verion in the us. understandably i have spent countless hours watching reviews on this car, mostly for the Quadrofolio and your review is the best amongst some very good ones. the Quadrofolio is inspirational and stirs excitement though the 280ph is fun as well with essentially the same razor sharp steering response and has the D mode. D mode even in the 280 hp version at slow speeds (50 - 70 kilometers per hour) shifts like a race car providing thrills for the driver and front seat passenger.

      Wow, thanks for this. The Quadrifoglio is indeed a superb car but I have also reviewed the diesel Giulia Speciale and that is also a very impressive car. Steering and gearbox are the highlights for me :-)

    I'm a M4 fan for life, but this Alfa's exhaust sound is way better than the latest generation of Beemers.

      Bimini Bob I have a friend that loves BMWs and drove my Alfa. His words were, “I would take this over a BMW any day!”

    • @Mechadondada
      @Mechadondada 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Albitz I’ll probably never get a chance to drive an Alpha, but I’d like to. But speaking practically, I’d prefer the *slightly* better reliability of the BMW. I also think the next gen M cars are gonna have a better exhaust note.
      Full disclosure: I can’t afford any of them.

      I don't think that the topic has to be so polarized. Every beautiful car is beautiful. I'll take a Maybach Benz, M3, AR, STI, and my roots; Civic Type R. This Alfa is not better than an M3. Not for what an M3 is; a super daily driver. M3 is not better than it either, just different cars.

    I love the fact that this is the second Quadrifoglio review I've seen with a baby seat in the back. My Veloce arrives in July. First child should arrive in December, so it's great to see that the Alfa is a popular family car! ;-)

    Simply put: to appreciate an Alfa you just have to get in and push. It's all about you, the road and the driving experience. No need for super fantastic infotainment systems and electronic assistance systems, Alfas are made to give you goose bumps on the road. Audi and BMW are for accountants, Alfa is for the drivers. Period.

  • @peterthwaites5891
    @peterthwaites5891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great drive, i could tell you loved every minute of it too! and unlike so many other testers you did not try to find any shortcomings with it being an Alfa, you just got in and enjoyed it, that is why true petrol heads buy them...

      Shortcomings? Got to be very few if any. We had it side to side with a Mercedes AMG C63S, and i was shocked at some of the trim slip-ups we discovered on the Merc, loose trim on rear bumper, loose trim in passenger footwell ... Found none of that in Giulia. (Both cars were new, demo units)The Merc’s steering also feels heavy and ungainly compared to this. The C63 is a muscle car.. Giulia is a supersaloon, agile, sure footed, even with an average driver. And the Merc is simply put, well, boring compared to Giulia, also WAY less special..

      @@PetrolPed *If I might ask 2 questions - I am seriously considering a QV and I'm doing as much due diligence as possible before the dreaded experience of going to a dealership. First question: can I be Eddy's friend too? I mean talk about FWB! ;) Second and serious question (although that one was only half tongue in cheek I'd love to be friends w/ a generous QV owner lol)...one thing I **_hate_** about many (most) saloons is whilst driving in a spirited manner, and on a moderate curve (see e.g., left curve you enter at timepoint **13:58** . . . think of that curve maybe a titch more curvacious) . . . let's say at 60-80mph . . . in the middle of the curve the pavement has a lateral (left to right) 'flaw' for example - a culvert underneath that's raised the pavement a tad, or a overpass with a cold weather expansion plate . . . I haaaate it when the rear wheels hit said imperfection at same time and causes the back wheels/rear of car to 'hop' a bit, a stutter of sorts. I'm wondering if you or your QV friend who really is an amazing person in every respect (my obsequiousness was also planned b/c I want him as a friend!) can comment on whether the QV has the dreaded rear wheel 'chatter hop' in a curve at speed. I'm not articulating it well but those who know what I am trying to convey, know that tendency of many cars' rear wheels to jump-hop a tad when on a curve and both rear wheels hit the little bump (always a lateral road flaw from L to R across the lanes) as the car passes over it* *Sorry that was excessive verbiage but its hard to describe. And, I endeavor to flatter your friend so he will be mine too*

    Alfa Romeo really have it's own class which unbeatable with German rivals. I do hope Alfa Romeo considering making E-Segment liftback fastback (Revival of Alfetta GTV) to rival against A7/S7, 6 Series GT/M6 and CLS Class/ CLS AMG and Coupe/Hatchback Giulia to rival against A5/S5, 4 Series/M4 and C Coupe/ C Coupe AMG.
    Alfa Romeo do have a very huge potential to outclass German Rivals. Maserati is playing league with Porsche. Alfa Romeo should be playing league with Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Jaguar.
    This Giulia is a petrolhead's car. Few fancy gadgets.

      Which year/version do you refer to? My wife’s X3 330D 2018 fails on infotainment electronics, including sound, bluetooth connection and central locking glitches. The QV is a car weighing 1450 Kg, compared to the 2000+ KG of the M3/M5. The rear seat passengers have much more leg room than the M3 and a bit more than the M5. Personally I chose this car over the 5 series M models being Diesel or Petrol. The M3 is a small car. With the Giulia you replace the M5, not the M3 from my point of view. Last, but not least, my 2007 3 series coupe failed on the ABS pump module with 130.000 km in 9 years. I will let you know what happens to the QV, when it approaches the 130 thousand km mileage mark ...

    • @niacuk1
      @niacuk1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think, having owned a few Germans of the same level the interior trim is probably 90% there. But, with the Alfa that's not what you're paying for. With the active splitter, carbon roof, bonnet and propshaft, the Ferrari engine and proper aero you'd be looking at another £10k on top if you wanted C63 level interiors. Plus another 50kg in a car that's already 100kg heavier than the book says. The brakes do take a little getting used to but after a few weeks they become second nature. They are different in reality.

    When you almost hit the mountain biker, did it brake itself? Or did you brake like a proper driver supposed to? I personally hate driving aids that make horrible drivers that should practice look like a good driver

    • @PetrolPed

      I did the braking...it just made a noise !

    • @agamemnonvaronos5590
      @agamemnonvaronos5590 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the driver’s actions.
      If the breaking is not strong enough the system will add more power to the pump. It is a great system, although I cannot compare it with the latest BMWs. All modern cars do feature driving aids. In Race mode the QV is a driving beast, without ESP, or front collision safety. I think ABS is active though.

    • @South4153
      @South4153 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Imnotahsvbadass Kemp goes back to the very beginning of alfa romeo where one of their racing drivers used to put a green cloverleaf on a white square on his race cars to bring him good luck. the square represented the four racing drivers that were driving for alfa romeo at this time. he died later in a practice session where he had not put the clover leaf on. alfa then adopted the cloverleaf badge for their sporty models and made it a triangle in honor of the driver that has died (ugo sivocci).

    The only thing that Alfa Romeo is capable of slaying is itself. They can re-brand, re-configure and attempt to reinvent, but it will not work. This car is already showing legendary Alfa fallibility. I write this to you from italy where local opinion of this high priced car is dubious at best. You see, Alfa is the car that is seen by Italians as the car brand that should just die. I have been to three dealers here and it took me a month to find one to test drive (in italy no les!!!) The heavy front end is responsive, true and they did throw a ton of money at the interior. But the stiffness will come at a cost as the toll is paid by the moving parts, and anyone who has ever had problems with an Alfa can almost feel what is coming. An avalanche of problems and a dealership that laughs last.

    • @namibgtv6
      @namibgtv6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesrosch , firstly, i have many italian friends, and according to them Alfa is worshipped in Italy, secondly, the crap you are uttering tells me you either know nothing about cars, or just plainly want to bad mouth a fabulous car brand. Giulia has 50/50 weight distribution, and probably the best handling i have experienced in a saloon car, regarding your claims on reliability, the demo we work with has been driven very hard day in and day out for the last 7 months, including track demos, without a single hickup. People like you are very valuable to Alfisti. You talk senseless crap about these fabulous cars everywhere you go, even though in most cases you know nothing about Alfa, and by doing this you help us Alfisti buy cars like Giulia for the price of a Kia when they reach 5 years of age. One of the worlds best kept secrets..

      al-fisting wrong by the way. Because as a previous Alfa owner I know that is what happens to anybody stupid enough to buy this brand.

    • @namibgtv6
      @namibgtv6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesrosch your Alfa must have really hated you. During nearly 8 years of Alfa ownership, having owned 7 Alfas, old and new, and currently still owning an 84 GTV6, and 2x156 v6’s, i can honesly tell anyone puking shit about reliability, that none of my cars have let me down once. I just dont treat them like Toyotas or Kias, but rather like a beautiful lady. Regular services, TLC, and nobody drives them apart from me. Will never be able to appreciate anything that is not an Alfa.
