My Mountain is Falling Apart!

  • One of the roads on my forest land washed out last winter. I do some investigating upstream to see what happened to cause a bunch of sediment to come down the stream. After I find out what happened, I take a little walk through my forest land. Adjust my Trail camera and show some elk videos. Before I am able to do any logging or cut any firewood on the other side of the property, I will have to fix this road situation.

My son and I went on a 5 mile hike yesterday and didn't see another soul. We wondered why?! All reviews said the trail was well maintained. They lied. The lie should have been obvious to us near the start when the bridges were washed out and the forest service had just chipped out steps on some old peeled logs, some of which were highly unstable. The path looked clear tho so we continued. After the first mile being clear we were lulled into a false sense of security. As we got further along the trail it gradually receeded into dense new big leaf maple scrub, interlaced with every species of blackberry bramble. We took the time to break and bend the worste of the stickers off the trail, which soon could only be found by feel. Being of the rugged sort we bushwacked our way for about an hour when it finally connected in with the part they had cleared by coming in from the other end. The only part reviewed and used by horses, who knew?! We were rewarded in the end tho by seeing and hearing many birds, most especially an owl on our way back, and two herds of elk. Part of the hike was through a burn that happened some years ago and the fireweed and wild hollyhock were in bloom filling the air with their delightful perfume. I almost forgot to mention, but your fast descent into the creek reminded me, that my son nearly took a header off the trail because a gopher hole undercut the embankment. He caught himself just in time, the drop off was about 200 feet through the brush. He also got visited by a bald headed hornet up his shorts, which resulted in a remarkable howling dance, which I did not record. Instead I got out my tube of trusty Afterbite, and doctored it for him. All in all it was a beautiful day.

the first step in repairing erosion is to not tell anyone there is erosion to repair. then nobody will come looking for it.

We had the regular flowing side of our creek dam up with debris this winter. Went I went on a walk this spring found out it bypassed on the other side of the fork, but not before eroding and causing a landslide of a good 100ft long, 50+ft high part of the ravine on the other side of the creek. Not sure what I should do, can do, or how I would do it at this point.

Looks like the logs could have caused a nasty ice dam in the winter. When it began to thaw the banks couldn't hold it, so it blew out. Here's a quote for you, "When your backs against the wall, don't turn around and run!" 😊

      @@PaulHodgson-gm6lg You'd be incorrect, sir.
And in the Oregon Coast Range, (where Wilson's land is) it absolutely freezes hard enough to cause extensive ice damage to the trees every winter; just inquire of any of the small woodlands' landowners filing claims every spring.

Ice dams are what first came to my mind due to the large logs in the creek. The thought also occurred that since we are prone to multiple instances of atmopheric rivers in our Fall and Winter months, which bring high winds as well as gully washing rains, and deep snowfall, followed by warm spells, which cause supersaturation. We are at higher risk of these types of events on steep inclines. Those of us who live with these conditions do not build our homes near idealic looking summer streams or deeply slanted hillsides with lovely canyon views. Not unless of course we want them turned into houseboats. 😊

lot of hard work going into these vids. professional type production. 'yeah, here's the big elk trail', coming out of the bush and just finding it: with the camera there waiting. He's been out, planted the camera, gone back in... makes a very good vid but damn hard work I'd say. What about doing it with one of those drones that follow you? Be easier if it worked. Ad another dimension even.
