Even though I've been playing off and on since the 90s, Scars block is a huge nostalgia block for me since that's when all my friends started to play again too. I just bought a box of each for some point down the line so I can draft this phenomenal block with my friends. Scars, Besieged, and New Phyrexia. Totally phenomenal.
God I don't care what the cards are, I loved opening cards that felt like they weren't printed on a napkin... I know that it will never change back... god damnit WOTC.
13:50 Putrefax was one of the staples of my infect deck. Hard hitting fast and near impossible to deal with. Even one poison counter is fatal in this set with the proliferate ability. Either you took a lot of your enemies out or you put yourself in a position to end a game with that card. No regeneration for how he worked. Use him, lose him and keep the damage coming with Proliferate. But those corpse curs...well.. :)
Amazon is partially to blame...general cardboard prices have gone through the roof because of the cardboard demands for Amazon shipping subscriptions...everything from shipping boxes to cardstock has gone up, because the raw pulp, and recycled pulp has drastically increased in price. If WotC wanted to make a profit, while providing cards of the quality they did 8 years ago, the MSRP would have to be raised to as much as $5.50 per pack.
Funny that Rudy pulled a Kemba, because while we can't have artwork like that in 2018, she was was printed in 2017 commander with the original art, much to my surprise. Guess wizards said F it, we can't afford an artist to paint a new safe, fixed version.
The creativity behind this set was amazing. My favorite set. My FIRST SET. Pulled some major worth outta this one. Everyone was playing zendikar and there wasnt any, so i got this and i am so glad. Thank you SO much for this buddy. This is amazing
I'm a newer player and I'm honestly disappointed with the state of foils in mtg today. Everything gets the foil treatment, the artwork feels incredibly cartoonish, your showcase foils come curled in the pack because they aren't sealed for moisture and some cards are faded because the printer was running low. I really miss the watermarks the most, especially the foil watermarks, it's half the reason I fork over the extra cash to buy old-school foil cards. Between the edgier designs and artwork/foils, and the more interesting game mechanics I really wish I had got into mtg years ago, this probably would've been when I was in 5th grade.
This was the set that got me interested in Magic when I was about 11. It reminded me so much of Duel Masters, my favourite card game, long out of production in english at that point when I bought my first intro pack. Pulled a foil Green Sun's Zenith from my first ever Magic pack from that deck too. I took care of that baby and it's sitting nicely double-sleeved in a binder. Got any english Duema boxes stashed in your basement, attic, or in the walls of your place, Rudy? Probably sitting somewhere mixed in with boxes of Born of the Gods. Oh, you gotta have the duel masters OCG version of Black Lotus, or Emrakul from the hush-hush DM Unhinged-like set, the Black Box Pack, right? Duel Masters is insane these days btw, I think it's obvious, and pretty cool I think, that Wizards tests potential future Magic mechanics in Duema. Not sure if that Lotus is tournament legal, but pretty much everything has haste and double-strike, and the last block was all about summoning 2-3 prototype companions, some with alternative win conditions even, per turn by turn 3 from a 12 card extra deck called the gacharange zone. Oh how I wish that Kaijudo reboot went differently. Love the channel, Rudy, been watching since about 2016 around the time I was still going to FNM regularly.
15:15 Another staple in my black green infect. THIS card made my opponents realize i was not kidding around. I ran 4 of them because they were THAT powerful in the format. Not sure what the card costs today. But that puppy won me a few games. Even ONE on the field was dangerous.
Every time I watch these older box openings I always end up buying a bunch of foils from that set. They always look so good! I love how the lands look.
If only the card quality was a fraction of what it was back then. The only foils I like better than those are the first few blocks they did it with; Masques-Invasion-Odyssey, 7th edition, man those foils looked nice though Rudy. I was so pumped when you pulled a Blackcleave Cliffs in the last pack, good thing for your patron that card is up to $50 now! I think it doubled or more in value after the Pro Tour. Loved the video man.
Yeah! This is by far my fav block. They were not affraid during this time to desing appealing cards with power attached to them. They also at that time didn't test that much standard environment and may be opened to powercreep unbalanced things. BUT... i'm sure we can have this power level in a balanced standard environment. Also, nice to see how the foiling look great back then and how the cards are thick and in good shape.
Opened up my 1st pack of Scars a little over 3 years ago. I started in M15 and wasn't playing back then. Opened up an engine and almost missed the foil in the back, the LGS owner reminded me to check the back of the pack. Foil Elspeth Tirel behind the poison token. Been in love with Magic and Scars in particular :)
Thank you and ur supporters . fun opening. i started around beta/ unlimited then i dropped off and started up on phyrixan and built a poison counter deck kind of through the player's off but they had other play's and i stopped after that, great cards though
Oh man, this was when I got properly into MTG, ran a myr deck, then an infect deck, ran a pike delver deck until it rotated out, and loved every minute of it.
Hi Rudy! just want to say watching your videos made me go want to go out and buy some packs! I bought 6 packs scars of mirrodin and I pulled a sword of body and mind, BlackCleave Cliffs and a razorverge thicket! Glad you keep putting out interesting videos of opening packs! its my favorite thing to do! keep it up!
I remember those days. Ppl didn't buy single on day 1 we were buying a box each that we drafted or simply enjoyed opening together. Booster box are a lot of fun and I wish ppl understand from your video how enjoyable they are.
bought a few packs of these a few weeks ago. i really missed this block. such a good block! this set in particular, in my opinion, was pretty aesthetically pleasing!
I'd rather have a card with first strike than with double strike. Consider the following: A 3/2 with first strike vs. a 2/2 with double strike. Both would likely cost the same amount. The 3/2, however, would kill a 3 toughness creature outright and survive whereas the 2/2 with double strike would trade. Double strike is better for adding +1/+1 counters, sure, but the 3/2 becomes a 4/3 and kills 4 toughness creatures whereas the 2/2 becomes a 3/3 and trades with them. Again. The point is that trading first strike for double strike just isn't worth it most of the time because of what you have to give up.
I loved playing in this era. Started playing when world wake first came out. Loved going through fat packs and boosters throughout the years. Used to Play magic at lunch and pretty much any time we could through middle school and high school
I was at the LA prerelease for this set. One of the few big prerelease events that I ever attended. I just happened to be living in the area during release. I won my draft pod and managed to pull no value all day long. I was trying to sell/trade unopened packs from random sets. Some guy told me they were all repacks, so I sat down with him and opened them all, turns out they were NOT repacks. Sold a few cards to him. Was a great time except I was sick AF for the whole tournament due to excessive sexy party time the night before. I got a lot of comments about looking "ghostly white" and "are you sick buddy?" so I musta been looking like a sheet. Good times Rudy, good times.
I have a Razorverge Thicket, Contagion Engine, Steel Hellkite, Semblance Anvil, Myr Propagator, Darksteel Juggernaut, Hand of the Praetors and Painful Quandry. I've always wanted one of the Swords from this set but they were way too expensive for me.
I feel like if the Memnite isnt reprinted the value will shoot the fuck up in a few more years. Maybe just in artifact collector circles, but that's an interesting card that can be manipulated extremely easily, and adds some really fun mechanics.
One of my favorite blocks of all time. I've even got a new phyrexia edh deck lol Vids like this make me want to be a patron just for the good old stuff like this
Hey Rudy. I know this isnt the place but im considering becoming a patron but im confused on how the whole box opening thing works. I was at your patreon site but the description on the tiers doesn't make much sense to me. Do I get a list of different sets i can choose from? and are they still $80? Because lots of boxes are much more than $80. Sorry and if anyone else can chime in i would appreciate it!
@Rudy, so I actually paused the video and ran the code. I was quite surprised when didn't pull out "network connectivity issue"!! Still, great pulls from this box! Do moar?! :D
Thank you for the box openings, I would love to have Rudy crack old boxes for me, but I have kids. Maybe some day I will join the patreon and get the sweet deal on standard boxes. Do those come with promos and collector boosters?
I bought a single pack of Scars from my LGS and pulled a foil Mox Opal. Sold it on eBay for $200. I have definitely spent more than that on individual packs since then trying to duplicate the rush ha.
so when someone "buys" a box for you to open on video, do you like send the cards to them or are they just paying to watch you open it? just asking out of curiosity
16:25 The mythics in this box SUCKED by format standards. No Mox no Skittles, No Koth, No Els, The Sword was the only saving Mythic imo. You really wanted and want Wyrmcoil and Mindslaver. No venser either. My favorite card of the set.
Hey Rudy I found something really odd in my Rivals of Ixalan Boosterpacks. I bought 9 and they shared sone things. 3 of them had 2 times the same 3 Uncommons and once 2 of them but on other. Same thing with 3 other of the Boosterpacks. The 3 last where just completely normal. I all bought them at my LGS. Does someone know something about this phenomenon. wtf only now do I realize that the red stuff in the beginning isn't only reminding me of persona 5, it IS persona 5! Is this the p5 expansion for weiß schwarz? And if so, will there be an opening? Tell me rudy, can we hit a foil Morgana in this one?
Is it my imagination or is the artwork in this set really, really good? It's like I'm actually looking at distinctive, dynamic characters rather than passive, vague 'things' lost in the background.

God I don't care what the cards are, I loved opening cards that felt like they weren't printed on a napkin... I know that it will never change back... god damnit WOTC.
Yep agreed, that's what sets him apart from the others who do it.
I love this set, I still got some of these cards in my infect deck. That island at 8:40 makes a full art if you follow the id in order.
Isaiah Morris all the lands do it. Its awesome
God I love Phyrexians in this block...
Thank you for the shout out!
I subbed :D
When you realize that the only reason Rudy has remained in the business is because he's addicted to sniffing ink
The artwork and foiling was THIS MUCH BETTER only EIGHT years ago!? My god
Amazon is partially to blame...general cardboard prices have gone through the roof because of the cardboard demands for Amazon shipping subscriptions...everything from shipping boxes to cardstock has gone up, because the raw pulp, and recycled pulp has drastically increased in price. @Lassi Kinnunen They aren't lying, my local paper mill switched to board and stock production because the demand is so high.
Funny that Rudy pulled a Kemba, because while we can't have artwork like that in 2018, she was was printed in 2017 commander with the original art, much to my surprise. Guess wizards said F it, we can't afford an artist to paint a new safe, fixed version.
They should do another block of Phyrexia because it is one of their most popular sets. After they do a third installment of Ravinica of course.
James Ruiz lessgo
Now that they’ve done the GRN block, I’m just waiting on Return to Phyrexia, or something like that
this aged well
You need to do champions of kamigawa, my first set of magic that got me hooked...
Christopher Mayen buy it and he'll open it
Wouldn't that just be 20 minutes of him horribly mispronouncing names, despite them ALL being completely consistent from a phonetic standpoint?
insert "REEE KAMIGAWA SUCKS" comment
ccggenius12 He only does it to piss people like you off, but yes let’s do it
I gave up in kamigawa.
triggered @ 16:30 when rudy puts the mythic in the rare pile
Also, he said the box wasn't going to give up any more mythics or foil rares but ended up getting at least a handful more.
The creativity behind this set was amazing. My favorite set. My FIRST SET. Pulled some major worth outta this one. Everyone was playing zendikar and there wasnt any, so i got this and i am so glad. Thank you SO much for this buddy. This is amazing

I started magic like a month after Scars came out. That in combination with Zendikar block was insane. Definitely the best era of standard magic IMO
Every time I watch these older box openings I always end up buying a bunch of foils from that set. They always look so good! I love how the lands look.

“Ahhhh, the random card/mechanic”
-Rudy, every out-of-print box-opening ever
Nothing beats a cup of coffee, magic cards, and a Rudy video. Thanks Rudy!
im gonna have to become a patron after college and buy some boxes of mirrodin stuff from you for being a real nice and entertaining guy on youtube
Opened up my 1st pack of Scars a little over 3 years ago. I started in M15 and wasn't playing back then. 4:27 Sounds like you just busted a line of some good shit.
man... nostalgia... the first set i ever started playing in! so much fun, got me into magic! probably still have a playset of memnites somewhere too
Misprint corpse cur at 7:38? Looks like the inking is faded on the corner
"you can have it fast or you can have it nice"
I thought Wizards wanted to attract a female audience. Giggity.
Loved this block and Thank you so much Rudy for popping one of these open! Please open a New Phyrexia next!
I don't even care about the cards anymore, I just like how you open the packs. So captivating!
I remember those days. Ppl didn't buy single on day 1 we were buying a box each that we drafted or simply enjoyed opening together. Booster box are a lot of fun and I wish ppl understand from your video how enjoyable they are.
bought a few packs of these a few weeks ago. i really missed this block. such a good block! this set in particular, in my opinion, was pretty aesthetically pleasing!
ive been looking for a while for that specific foil forest! quite enjoyed seeing the video!
This was the first set I drafted extensively. That little wrench shape always makes me happy.
I'd rather have a card with first strike than with double strike. Consider the following: A 3/2 with first strike vs. a 2/2 with double strike. Both would likely cost the same amount. As a newfag to mtg I thank you for your service
I loved playing in this era. Started playing when world wake first came out. Loved going through fat packs and boosters throughout the years. Used to Play magic at lunch and pretty much any time we could through middle school and high school
Never clicked on a Rudy video faster! Scars is my favorite block! Zendikar through innistrad was the peak of magics history
I loved your Weiss Swartz unboxing, your mtg holds a special place in ma heart :D
Really looking forward to the video on the ink change, and not to mention any on card stock quality problems
What a cool set. Artwork still has some badass and vibrant feeling about it, unlike todays dead art.
I disagree.
How does one sponsor an Onslaught Booster Box? Best block is best.
This is the set that got me into Magic. Just epic art and cards.
Me, yelling at my phone: "Enough yap open the packs, you floppy taco!!"
My fiance: "The fuck u just say??"
This makes me so nostalgic, since this set made me come back to Magic :)
I was at the LA prerelease for this set. One of the few big prerelease events that I ever attended. I just happened to be living in the area during release. knowledge pool is one of my fav cards. Love the art love the imprint for hard locks w/ things like Teferi.
This takes me back, this was when I first started going to an LGS when I was in college.
Wurm tokens are sought after
I started playing during Scars... oh the memories (and power creep I thought was normal).
Excellent video !! One of my fav sets
Never till today have i seen a playmat that i loved the art on, and not known about it...... Got any of them for sale? (Exodus Lysteria)?
I was introduced to magic when the scars block was in standard so it’s always been my favorite
I feel like if the Memnite isnt reprinted the value will shoot the fuck up in a few more years. Maybe just in artifact collector circles, but that's an interesting card that can be manipulated extremely easily, and adds some really fun mechanics.
14:30 one of the staples of my group play deck. First time i ran that they didnt understand why i had it...Then the storm hit. :)
One of my favorite blocks of all time. I've even got a new phyrexia edh deck lol
Vids like this make me want to be a patron just for the good old stuff like this
Hey Rudy. I know this isnt the place but im considering becoming a patron but im confused on how the whole box opening thing works. Getting nostalgic with those boosters. This was the year I started playing!
@Rudy, so I actually paused the video and ran the code. I was quite surprised when didn't pull out "network connectivity issue"!! Still, great pulls from this box! Do moar?! :D
19:07. idk about that one. it doesn't look too good
Could you mention when you bought all that boxes and how much you paid back then? Or would it spoil the fun?
God I fucking love those cards. Brings me back to the beginning of Magic for me.
I love the basic lands from this set.
Rudy, thanks for opening my favorite set! Love you dude
Thank you for the box openings, I would love to have Rudy crack old boxes for me, but I have kids. Maybe some day I will join the patreon and get the sweet deal on standard boxes. Do those come with promos and collector boosters?
I loved this standard with zendikar. I played quest for the holy relic with memnites n stuff. Was a blast
I bought a single pack of Scars from my LGS and pulled a foil Mox Opal. Sold it on eBay for $200. I have definitely spent more than that on individual packs since then trying to duplicate the rush ha.
From $225 on ebay 4 years ago to $650 today. Probably gonna pick on these up soon along with an Avacyn.
How much is a booster box wholesale
Do u have any new phyrexia booster boxes!!! Ive been trying to find one everywhere???
Email him
Wotc really needs to bring card quality back to the old standard.
the " chrome " foiling was done to echo the artifact theme in the set.
Rudy how does buying a box from you work? Email?
Remember when the promos were actually good cards? Emrakul....Wurmcoil Engine...
so when someone "buys" a box for you to open on video, do you like send the cards to them or are they just paying to watch you open it? just asking out of curiosity
I wish I could find a completely unopened box like this. First box I ever owned as a kid was a weird blue box from scars and I crave another lol
16:25 The mythics in this box SUCKED by format standards. No Mox no Skittles, No Koth, No Els, The Sword was the only saving Mythic imo. You really wanted and want Wyrmcoil and Mindslaver. No venser either. My favorite card of the set.
this was when i went from casual to competitive. this was my first booster box buy
A friend and I played the Rudy Drinking Game. Take a shot for every time he says “wow”. We ended up in the hospital...
By the Way all these packs are German.
Reseal by your LGS probably?
Check the bottom seam, if it has glue on it, the pack sure is a reseal
The foils not being warped has nothing to do with the quality they warp because of humidity and they're sealed off of any moisture
I'd be surprised if darkslick shores was reprinted outside of a masters set, seeing as we just had a fastland cycle
With memnite I have a super janky modern deck. That also works with ornothopter. It's a super great little goblin deck with another card from the same set called koldortha rebirth so fun man. Turn one mountain memnite ornothopter and the koldortha rebirth sac the ornothopter.
You could make it a nice pauper deck with a little help if you had m13 version of ornothopter and some other crap like none saw or cathars shield. Then throw in some dragon fodders and maybe a couple krenkos command. You got the bones of a goblin token deck for pauper.
Nim deathmantle and composite Golem are also great combos for infinite mana in EDH.
And we can't forget about skitheryx my Lord what a power house. If I think about this set it was probably one of my favorites.
If I want to buy a box from rudy how do i go about it? 1st timer
wtf only now do I realize that the red stuff in the beginning isn't only reminding me of persona 5, it IS persona 5! Is this the p5 expansion for weiß schwarz? And if so, will there be an opening? Tell me rudy, can we hit a foil Morgana in this one?
Maaaan, i'd kill for one of these
I just love the setting and the power level so much
Is it my imagination or is the artwork in this set really, really good? It's like I'm actually looking at distinctive, dynamic characters rather than passive, vague 'things' lost in the background.
it's "meer" rhymes with "deer" :)
Could have sworn it was "murr" rhymes with "concur".
Good luck, Cory! :D
Is it just me, or were there a ton of foils in that box? Return of green screen rudy?
I started playing Magic when Scars came out so it will always have a place in my heart, but Innistrad will always be my favorite ❤️
Jeez, only 8 years ago. I swear it will be so strange when in 8 years we will be saying “They just don’t print cards like they used to in Ixalan!”
Golden era
How he has the self control NOT to open all those damn boxes I will never know.
Millions and millions of dollars
triple Scars was my absolute favorite draft format ever....and i have 37 Furnace Celebrations and 90+ of each Mana Myr to prove it
I opened a box of this a few months ago and I got all three planeswalkers and a couple meh mythics, the gargantuan and idomitable archangel
