  • This video is a compilation of the previous 4 videos in my W210 series of A/C component replacements. The video shows from the beginning to the end how to replace the following: AC Compressor, AC Expansion Valve, AC lines, and AC Receiver Drier. It also shows how to charge your system with fresh Freon. This job can easily cost $2,000 plus in the U.S.

If you cannot afford the MB brand compressor, don't worry. There are two solid third party brands with very good reputation. Denso and Nissens.

You need to add 4.05 ounces (120 cubic centimeters) of compressor oil (PAG 46) to the compressor unless it comes prefilled with oil. Even then, if you are not sure it comes with PAG 46, drain it and replace it with PAG 46.
Keep in mind, compressor oils are mostly hygroscopic and absorb the moisture from the air. Moisture kills A/C systems. Therefore, minimize the amount of time your oil bottle is open, the compressor is open if prefilled with oil, or if any port to your A/C system is open for longer than a few minutes.

It is always a good idea to replace the two rubber gaskets at the tip of the two pressure lines connecting the Expansion Valve and the Condenser to the Compressor. Depending on when you last replaced the gaskets, consider replacing them. You can remove the two old gaskets and try to find matching gaskets at an auto parts store or buy the following packages:
    www.autohausaz.com/catalog/c/...
    www.autohausaz.com/catalog/c/...
I used the Hansa Receiver Drier model but the cheapest Receiver Drier as of October, 2019, is the Rein model which is much better than Rein and can be found at FCPEuro.com for $13.00:

If you live in the U.S., you can borrow both tools you will need for this job - A/C Manifold Gauge and Vacuum Pump - from most franchised Auto Parts stores. You can also purchase them from the following links.
    Manifold: www.amazon.com/OrionMotorTech...
    Pump: www.amazon.com/Kozyvacu-TA350...

Just finished my complete AC replacement. Took about six hours, which included filling AC. Works great now. Suggestion to anyone doing these repairs; when you replace each part, do a vacuum check before you change out the next part. This way you verify each part doesn't have a leak. If you replaced all three, then do a vacuum check, then find a leak, you will have to figure out where your leak is. And when you have all the plastic out, give it a good clean. Airflow has increased greatly by cleaning all the plastics. Thank you for the great video.

How do you reset the A/C control after the refilling with new R-134a in order to turn the A/C on?

  • @cesarcortes690

I just did an a/c repair on my friends turbo diesel FYI i highly recommend washing and degreasing the entire engine bay before working on it , those diesels get very dirty overtime lol.😅

Masood: I completed this same job yesterday in around 8 hours (new compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/drier) on my '03 CLK 320. Your video identified some tools I needed before I decided to tackle the job. (Torque wrenches, extensions, wobble & universal joint adapters, etc.). I replaced the expansion valve first - and found this to be the most difficult & time consuming part of the job. I'm glad I changed the $20 expansion valve, because after pulling it out I found the internal spool rod was coated with a white substance. Besides the high and low side hoses, the compressor is very similar to an alternator job with the exception of having to do some work from below. On my CLK, it was easier to remove & replace the compressor from the bottom. I have HVACR experience, so the refrigerant evacuation and charge was typical - but your suggestions are spot on. I want to thank you for publishing your steps. This video gave me the motivation to order $250 in parts, another $100 or so in tools I didn't have, and the knowledge to know exactly where to go to rebuild my CLK's refrigerant circuit. Thank you!

My car is 1996 w210 e290 in the US, with ac on, compressor not turning on (spins freely), not blowing cold at all...thinking about replacing condenser, drier, accumulator valve and compressor all at once. Is there a way to turn on the compressor so the system can be filled with freon? (Can 1996 e300td to buy ac parts to fix my ac or what US mercedes model is equivalent to my car?)

Hi, i have a clk w208. The compressor comes on for 5 seconds then turns off for 20 seconds ish. What could be my issue?

Mr. Masood, I got a 1998 e320 like yours. When the car reaches over 80’, I hear a winding noise from either transmission or engine. As I turn it of and on it goes away but it comes back. Can you tell me what is going on?

My 2000 Mercedes C-230 Kompressor has a couple of fuel lines running into a round thing on the low-pressure side. I guess it chills the fuel down before it hits the fuel rail is this right?

Thanks for the video. I got a question on my W210 AC problem. While starting the engine, it's look normal for first 2 minute. After that, the central vent almost no air flow but the both side vent looks normal. Driving for a while say 20 mins, the wind shield start foggy because the AC keeps blowing along the defrost vent. Do you know the reason behind? No matter how I adjust the vent direction, the central vent keep no air flow. What I can do is to turn the AC at low speed level and this can reduce the foggy impact.

An outstandingly detailed video for those who have a bit of mechanical know how. The details and explanations go way beyond anything I've seen on Y.T. My 1998 C230 with 410382 km has an excellent working air conditioner. The compressor is beginning to get a bit noisy, and I have been nursing it along with an occasional evacuation, flush, and recharge. But it's just a matter of time before I'll be performing this complete service.

Great video, now I have my next weekend project. Thank you. I suspected the expansion valve, you made a good point about changing the receiver/drier. I would have not replaced it, but after your video, definitely replacing it also.

Great video. Watched twice already. My 2000 E320's a/c isn't working. I'm a novice tinkerer but think I could do this job based on your video. I'm not sure where the problem is with my a/c. I think the compressor is working. Should I get a code reader to try to narrow it down or is this a waste of time? If a waste of time, should I just go ahead and replace expansion value, compressor, and receiver/drier then recharge?
