I appreciate that you guys took the time to do this. As a rope dart practitioner, I'd like to give some notes. The way Scorpion uses his "spear" in MK is pretty atypical for a rope dart. He uses it tethered to his lead hand with no slack or tail line, throws underhand, and pulls the opponent in. These aren't really how you use a rope dart. However, in MK11 Scorpion does use a few real rope dart techniques, such as rising elbow twine into reverse elbow shot, and a lead foot shot. If you want to use a rope dart properly, keep in mind that a rope dart is usually not a sharp knife, but rather a pointed weight. A bit like arrow tips for target practice. The length of the rope should be double your arm span or close to it. Optimal length should be measured by tethering to your off hand (called "anchor") the laying across your arms in a T pose. The dart head should either barely touch the floor or swing 1-4 inches about the ground from this position. For a standard "home" position, think of the rope as 3 parts of equal length. The part going from the head to your lead hand is called the lead. From you lead hand to your anchor hand is called the slack. The part held looped in your anchor hand is called the tail. A home position is when you stand with your shoulders squared and the dart swinging either downward (home position 1) or upward (home position 2) at a perpendicular angle to your shoulders. That is known as "wheel plane". To do a rising/underhand shot like you're attempting in the video, spinning the lead upward (home position 2), release at about a 45 degree angle as the dart is rising toward your front and bring you lead and anchor hand together in a point, releasing the slack and tail as it flies. This will ensure that the dart flies straight and will also put your anchor hand in position to cleanly retrieve your shot without scraping the ground if you miss. As for your comments as to whether an overhand shot is valid, it absolutely is for rope dart practitioners and it a more powerful shot overall than the underhand cast. If want more insight on how to dart from a fellow Australian that you may be able to collaborate with, look up Aaron Stanger (Stanger_things_flows on Instagram). He's an excellent dartist and I'm sure you could learn a lot about this from him if that appeals to you.

There is in Chinese martial arts such a weapon. It is usually referred to as "rope dart". It is similar to another form known as "chain whip". Typically the form involves spinning the weapon, using body posturing to 'wind up' the weapon, then a motion to 'fire' it off.

When you throw an object attached to a rope, you should throw the rope with the object. That way the mass of the rope won't drag down the object. Loop most of the length of the rope in your hand so that you can still grasp the object and leave enough slack so you won't tug your other hand when you throw the bundle. The rope will then uncoil as it flies and let the object fly without pulling the rope from the gound.

I will also say, you should look at the different kunai versions in Mortal Kombat 11, there are some that have hooks. That's gonna help pulling someone closer. Also, the scorpion throw kinda works, works really well on short distances, but over long distances, swirling it on the rope like shad works way better, builds up way more energy, but the problem was that shad obviously didn't hit with the point. To fix that, you can crack it back almost like a whip, that will pull on the back end up and back, so the point is aimed pretty much towards the target at the cost of a little bit of energy. Trust me, I've tried. It also helps if you wear bracers or armbands and attach the rope to the bracer, because you will inevitably at some point lose focus and drop the rope.
If this was the first time I saw him throwing stuff, I would think Nate is the kind of guy who says he isn't good at something beforehand and then just aces it 😄

Accuracy aside, a lot of issue with throws was rotation upon release making the blade go sideways as Hell. Seems like the weapon would ideally be launched like a dart with an underhand throw, like at the 18:03 mark.
Its cool how weapons like these can unit us together on the experimental capacities. Even the Channel "lets ask Sensei" with Shogo had his Kenjutsu master wield a longsword for a the very 1st time. The boarder between western and easter swords being looked at from opposite sides is really cool.
It's good to remember the pulling capacity may be linked to causing pain to the enemy, them instinctively moving towards you to avoid more pain from the kunai ripping out.
I hope you'll do a follow-up video to this where rather than testing a fictional version you try out the real-life inspiration. Rope darts are a real thing and you can find YT videos showing you everything about how to use them from stances to planes and spin to trick shots. If you want to try this one again, Karate Mart has a scorpion-inspired chain dart, and rope dart academy has silk darts, but those are for practice, most often used by those that practice the dance version of rope dart but also useful for practicing before using a martial arts rope dart. It should be said, though, that a rope would never be attached to the top of a spear like that to make a rope dart. 😛
If im not mistaken all Ninja/Shinobi weapons were originally tools, and the only reason they were used by them was because real weapons were banned at that time. Could be wrong, though.
@@FuknKms It's true that 'weapons' were banned (for non-samurai) at some point in Japan's history when ninja did exist. It is true that many weapons used during those times were simply tools repurposed into weaponry. But hey, seriously? Did any ban ever really succeed at what it was intended properly? There are always people that would go against the law. That being said, ninja's weren't really much of a fighter. They were first and foremost spies, secondarily, assassins. Things that are considered 'weapons' of the ninja were often really just 'tools'. Shurikens? Not weapons at all. Distraction tools, nuisance to irritate, but not meant for damage. Caltrops? Obviously purely deterrent. No one sane would assume the enemy would just run into them. Kunai? Its use closest to a 'weapon' was assassination. Throwing a kunai was mostly done not to attack but as a tool, for example to throw a rope over a branch etc (not to say that it cannot be thrown to hurt, of course, since it can, just that ninja's weren't really doing it if they could avoid it).
I'll be honest. The first video I saw with Nate and Tyranth, I was a bit put off by it. Maybe it's because I was too used to how solo Shad did things. Despite not liking it, i understood it, since Shad's health problems made it difficult for him to do all the physical things this channel may need. However, it's videos like this that prove how better the content has got. The continuous banter between you three is hilarious, and it's like watching three nerds having fun with throwing swords and shooting flaming arrows. Which you three are, in fact, and it's great. I miss the old "fantasy rearmed" format, but this is still entertaining and interesting.
I thought you'd mention it in the video but there is an actual historical weapon similar to this. The Chinese Rope Dart. Master practicioners of it can do some really wicked moves with it. Although the efficiency of the weapon is up for debate.
The difficulty involved with actually sinking the point into the target is one of the reasons I've come to favor the meteor hammer. You don't need to puncture when you can just punch and deliver blunt force damage.
“Kunai with Chain” is also a Yu-Gi-Oh! Card, but the image depicts an asymmetrical three-fingered lopsided anchor-like blade more reminiscent of the card’s Japanese name, which translates to “Boomerang with Chain”. Also, for some reason, “Kunai” autocorrected to “Kumasi” twice. I don’t know what “Kumasi” means, and have never even seen the word before.
I think a major aspect of the weapon that you guys are missing is having a weapon with the portability of a dagger, and the length of a spear. The main drawback of the weapon is how challenging it is to use rather than how effective it is. I hope you guys will check out the video that Kuma FIlms did to see the truth of this weapon. I think you would rethink your rating if he was with you guys doing the same challenge. Can you pull someone, If they grab the rope, yes you can, it's not an even tug of war, they have a knife in them.
If they catch the chain and close in you're screwed. Yeah you can try pulling in, but at that point they can also do the same thing. The difference being that the Kunai is on their side of the chain and they presumably have their own weapon in their main hand. A weapon like this is only really does well in grappling range and long range. The main drawback is missing. Hypothetically if you magically had 100% accuracy that would be better, but at that point you could give that advantage to any thrown weapon.
@@timevalentime1806 When I say you can pull an opponent who grabs the rope, I am only referring to someone you have hit and stuck the blade inside them. An expert is capable of returning the dart back to themselves as fast as they can toss it, and they will always be deceptive in how they toss it. Catching it while not outside of human capability, is incredibly unlikely and a poor choice.
I wasn't countering your point about pulling in after hitting the target. You're talking about a master throwing it, but if we were to have an opponent with equal skill they'd be able to react to that. Really they don't even need to catch it. All they'd have to do is run in the moment they see that the attack isn't going to hit them. Let's give the guy with the Kunai the benefit of the doubt and say that he's fast enough to not only pull it back before the oppent reaches him, but also get back into a defensive stance (I'm assuming that he'd do this instead of trying to make the Kunai hit the person on the way back because that really wouldn't do much damage and he'd be screwed. If you do want further elaboration on why just ask). At this point the opponent would be at striking range. Now the likelihood of survival depends on what weapon the opponent has. If they have a sword, the Kunai person is fucked since they'd be far enough for the kunai to be at a disadvantage while close enough that trying to throw would be a terrible idea. If they have a spear maybe you could argue that the person with the Kunai could try and back up to reset, but people move significantly faster forward than they do backward, so that's not really a good idea. The person's best chance at that point is closing in since their Kunai would have the advantage in close range against a spear. Actually they probably would have a good shot against a spear since they could hypothetically try to bind it with their chain and close in. At that point the person with the spear would be at a severe disadvantage. Yeah a spear is probably one of the more plausible weapons to go against since the kunai can be thrown out of reach of the spear while still having the advantage in close range.
This and the Demon Slayer throw video made me think of Skallagrim's videos on the subject, could make fir a fun "analysis" video for you lot.Best of luck to you with the next video, time to dig some classic Shad Machicolations! videos ;-)
I have a recommendation for a pair of weapons to try out, but they may be difficult to get a hold of, as they're kinda rare. They are Jet's hook swords from Avatar the Last Airbender. They appear to be Shaolin in origin, and they are also used by Kabal from Mortal Kombat.
It's amazing seeing Nate go mega nerd like (maybe a little more than) tyrinth does when he talks about anime. The best part is Nate's bad at throwing but out shines tyrinth at basically every opportunity. The consistent nut shots are absolutely amazing and in a way on target. Have a good rest of y'all's day.
One key nerd-ism to consider, I believe within the lore of the game that rope of Scorpion's is a symbiotic living entity, not just a plain dagger on a chain. It is able to adjust its own speed and angle/direction mid flight, so you'd have a hard time emulating that.
I think your throw would be a lot more powerful if you also throw the rope along with the spearhead or kunai. As it is now, all it does is drag it down because you impart ZERO force with it and it only saps energy from the throw of the projectile.
This kind of thing is what I always houserule the super silly "spiked chain" for D&D 3.5 to actually be. Even without any testing this design made far more sense than a bunch of double hooks chained together.
No need for house rules(Oh I misread the edition) 5th edition has a feat called Tavern Brawler that gives improvised weapons proficiency and you can make a grab as an attack action using that improvised weapon. The rules for grabbing have no specifications on distance other than it has to be within reach and certain mons have 10ft reach. Nobody seems to have asked for details from the devs.(Good, this way it's RaW) So you take the kunai w/ chain as an improvised weapon with 15ft range, a D4 and you can make the grab with it. If you wanted to fully "cosplay" Scorp in 5e you can do it with ShMonk 6/ Fiend Bladelock 14 with your warlock item being the kunai w/ chain. If your DM is chill, you can take Fighter like, EK 20 and just rip the class features from your fiend bladelock shadow monk. As a way to get four attacks.
What I am noticing with Tyranth's throws is a very consistent, smooth motion, where the point sort of gently scoops upwards. I would say if he were aiming for a target above him, accuracy would improve dramatically.
One thing i notice in almost every throw is the blade curves up. I bet if you doubled the weight of the blade and made it more top heavy this would work like a charm
I can't help but feel the throwing knife technique, of seating the weapon across the palm and up the fingers, and using the momentum of a hard fast reaching forward to release it.. nice & straight, all momentum going forward.
pretty cool, they should play the original MK1 again though. its waist to shoulder level under hand with a twist. Somewhere along time ago i heard it was a secret technique only taught by the Lin Kuei. I think Scorpion himself mentions it in one of the games. so most likely its a magical attack. if not the mechanics behind the kunai would be very complex. it would need a hidden spring function to push out hooks or a second set of blades to catch the rib cage. remember Scorpion always aims for the chest, probably a reason behind that.
Suggestion...stand sideways with throwing arm toward target while holding knife/spearhead cross your chest holding by your opposite shoulder whip hand across chest extend arm toward target release pointing at target
Now i kinda wonder how deadly or effective would Sai be. Not the conventional one, since they are more meant for defense and grapples, but Sharp-edged Sai
I believe it's actually called a rope dart, or rope spear (per Kano in MKX). Usually they're launched after a circular motion. The elbow shot looks pretty powerful and easy to master, so launching it that way might give better results. This weapon also appears in the movie "Ninja Assassin," where it's weilded in a more accurate manner, but of course stylized for cinema.
I dunno why, but also am so thankful this popped up on my recommended feed today, 1/1/24. Brings back so many fond memories of my MK playing days. Also, I have a deeper appreciation now of how easy I actually had it, all I had to do to make it work was a simple input command of “back, back, punch” on my controller 😁
I think this weapons functionality needs to be ranked higher. SPECIFICALLY; for hunting, yes still requires practice/mastery but with that I can see it being good for taking out small to medium animals for food.
You need to make medieval olympics video where you compete against each other in various events (throwing knives, spears, archery, maybe some cutting time challenges...). Its very fun seeing you compete and tease each other

there’s just something so uplifting about three blokes messing around with primitive weaponry while dressed appropriately and bantering. Good stuff. Love shad winding tyranth up😂
Adam Celadin might have some good input on this idea of throwing a knife with a chain attached. He would probably recommend his favored no-spin technique.
LOL!!! I love the fact that they trolled him for not being able to throw and he shows them them both up, then does a walk by throw and it lands... LOL! You guys are fantastic! WIsh you had the game footage slowmo to try all techniques from the games over the years.
I use to toss screw drivers and stick em all day long with out rotation could get some fairly deep shots with em. You place the handle between pointer and middle fingers thumb holding it to them under arm swinging motion and release once you are fully extended to the front. Can also stick 16 penny framing nails all day long in to tree trunks or wooden planks. You can get some deep penetration heavier is better your knife and spear head should do some real damage honestly
Id say the best way to match the placement of the kunai is the Rope Dart with a weighted blade. The only problem is the movements arent in line with scorpions style.

Scorpion convincing his friend to get over an ex "Get over her!!!"
😂 That sudden yell by Shad, "Don't miss Tyranth!"😂
Lmao when shad said "THAT SUCKED YOU SUCK" someone please make a meme out of that
I Love all the weird weapon Testing so much.
It's good to remember the pulling capacity may be linked to causing pain to the enemy, them instinctively moving towards you to avoid more pain from the kunai ripping out.
I love how guys know how to bring out the best of eachother 😁
This felt wholesome and absolutely hilarious😁
So y'guys know the "get over here" attack is actually called the SPEAR right?
Ninjas and pointy weapons attached to chains or ropes go together like milk and cookies.
Considering the Kunai is an actual weapon/tool used by Ninja in Japan's past makes sense it would work. Just like nunchucks.
They did not throw it like that lol. This was not the test of throwing weapons.
What about the Kuai Liang Scorpion in MK1? His style should be more Chinese considering the Lin Kuei’s roots, right?
Kunai was basically the equivalent to a spade, one of those little hand shovels for the garden.
I love these videos where you three bounce off each other. Can’t wait for the next Epic Adventure Quest.😄
Since you're already basically built one, PLEASE do a video on the history and effectiveness of the rope-dart and/or meteor-hammer
Love all your content I lost count how many times I've listened to your book ❤
You guys are having too much fun. 😊
Ya'll are on fire with the amount of content getting pushed.
Have you guys tried slings? They seem pretty op.
I've just been looking at slings. I really want to try one now, they may be my favorite weapon now.
@@thearcanehunter2736 Slings hit pretty hard. You can shatter bones and crack skulls, and salvage the armor.
Shad must have been really excited trying this based on his shouting.
Nate, humble and superior! Cheers guys, this video was great fun!
So was the weapon the kunai, or the amount of ego-destructive cheap shots you took at each other?
ikr? Lol
You can skim the part where I mention the spear since that's mostly me agreeing
This and the Demon Slayer throw video made me think of Skallagrim's videos on the subject, could make fir a fun "analysis" video for you lot.Best of luck to you with the next video, time to dig some classic Shad Machicolations! videos ;-)
Scorpian?
Scorpian’s??? LMAO The Australian scorpion
00:37 Yo! I love that “Nate get over here” yell 😆
Nobody seems to have asked for details from the devs.(Good, this way it's RaW)
So you take the kunai w/ chain as an improvised weapon with 15ft range, a D4 and you can make the grab with it.
You guys had an amazing amount of fun doing this.
pretty cool, they should play the original MK1 again though. its waist to shoulder level under hand with a twist.
Tyranth's problem is that he's turning his wrist up when he releases the "kunai." That's why the weapon keeps hitting the target point up.
Man, Nate getting his redemption was a real feel-good moment lmfao
Suggestion...stand sideways with throwing arm toward target while holding knife/spearhead cross your chest holding by your opposite shoulder whip hand across chest extend arm toward target release pointing at target
Now i kinda wonder how deadly or effective would Sai be. Not the conventional one, since they are more meant for defense and grapples, but Sharp-edged Sai
I think it’s safe to say Nate is a better Scorpion
I believe it's actually called a rope dart, or rope spear (per Kano in MKX). Usually they're launched after a circular motion.
The elbow shot looks pretty powerful and easy to master, so launching it that way might give better results. This weapon also appears in the movie "Ninja Assassin," where it's weilded in a more accurate manner, but of course stylized for cinema.
*GET OVER HERE!!!!!!*
i love that nate is crushing them this video xDD we need more of these moments.
Big moment for tyranth at 17:10....that "get over here" was AMAZING....meaning like how he said it
I dunno why, but also am so thankful this popped up on my recommended feed today, 1/1/24. Brings back so many fond memories of my MK playing days. Also, I have a deeper appreciation now of how easy I actually had it, all I had to do to make it work was a simple input command of “back, back, punch” on my controller 😁
This is like Top Gear meets HEMA. And on that bombshell.
I think this weapons functionality needs to be ranked higher. SPECIFICALLY; for hunting, yes still requires practice/mastery but with that I can see it being good for taking out small to medium animals for food.
I liked that little bit at the end.
You need to make medieval olympics video where you compete against each other in various events (throwing knives, spears, archery, maybe some cutting time challenges...). Its very fun seeing you compete and tease each other
You should do games against each others. I love you guys being competitieve. Who is the very best... LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS!
Group of grown ass men talking shit and having a good time. I like this.
had a lot of fun watching this! I've Ioved mortal kombat since I was a kid, and you guys' banter was great throughout the video, laughed my ass off a couple times, good memes.
I think Nate is actually Scorpion. Either that or all his time playing Mortal Kombat has paid off. And here I am play GTA religiously
Would've loved to see them experiement on other techniques to see how this could actually be effectively used. Like spinning, and many other throwing styles...
there’s just something so uplifting about three blokes messing around with primitive weaponry while dressed appropriately and bantering.
Shad in one of the early videos:
I dont swear or scream
Shad today: Friggin!? Yeahhhhhhrrrrrrrrrr YOU SUGG
U r great shad i love these chanel
Thanks lads. Love it.
Id say the best way to match the placement of the kunai is the Rope Dart with a weighted blade. The only problem is the movements arent in line with scorpions style.
