    Don't ask me how I know this, but I can certainly say that the hook isn't likely to be taken seriously until you get someone with it and suddenly they understand what it's like to be a caught fish. The knife just immediately turns on a person's fight or flight mode, while the axe and machete send a very clear message that all possible pretense has been dropped and that you're taking your life in your hands by not getting the fuck outta there on the double.

      As someone with a cat that naturally has 18 sharp hooks, I can confirm this.
      Though I will point out that the setting matters too. Take a look at The Shining, being trapped in an isolated location (especially in a supernatural setting like the hotel) with someone targeting you with an ax, and with no means to receive any aid is a terrifying prospect. There's a reason the "Here's Johnny!" scene is as iconic as it is.

      Not disagreeing entirely, but if the axe wielder is swinging with such windup as shown here I think a fellow would have a good chance of being able to run in close during the windup and get in a couple throat punches or a pocketknife stab while making the axe relatively useless

    One factor not really into account here was concealability. Now, most "traditional" horror killers aren't particularly subtle, but in terms of psycho-serial killer motive, where the goal is maximum deaths over time, a knife or hook is easier to get into places it shouldn't be. The surprise factor of just whipping out a kitchen knife or a hook and just disemboweling someone is chilling, to say the least. Who hasn't heard of stories of so-and-so who got stabbed 20 times in the chest in the span of a minute, and bled to death gruesomely. Absolutely awful.

      Depends on the context. It a lot of "traditional" slasher horror films, the isolated setting *is* part of the horror. The Shining is an excellent example here. Having no one and no where to run to. So depending on the story, being inconspicuous serves no purpose and being overtly monstrous becomes more effective.

    I think you missed one important test - against the environment (for example doors). In many horror movies the protagonists/victims try to get away and lock doors , inside a car or the like. So something like the axe adds a "can't get away' factor.

    • @LashknifeTalon
      @LashknifeTalon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, this; and if you're a hero, you might need to escape the zombie horde or whatever, and you can use the axe to do it. Along with all the factors brought up in the video, I think the axe is the clear winner in both a "used by a hero against zombies/monsters" and a "used by a slasher to hunt teenagers" context.

    • @NotaHandlePushOnly
      @NotaHandlePushOnly 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Yup! That and try swinging an axe or a machete with wide swings indoors or a thick forest, you're probably going to hook on everything. Environment would totally be a factor. • @TheScarvig
      @TheScarvig 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      there is a reason its called a butchers hook....
      its usually used to move/hang carcasses in a butchery.
      nowadays it might be less present in the minds of younger people that have never seen meet anywhere except in a supermarket freezer, but the image of hanging on that hook squealing in pain like a pig as you struggle to get away and the thought of hanging on such a hook, alive but unable to free yourself waiting to be butchered like an animal have something horrifying that a quick death from a blade just do not bring to the table

    • @seanmckelvey6618
      @seanmckelvey6618 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Something ive always wondered if it would make an effective weapon or not is a gauntlet with 'claws' on each finger. Or heck even just 'pointy' tips on an armoured gauntlet. Would it cause any damage or not? If anything it would look intimidating but im wondering if its practical.

    • @kestrelraptorial689

      @@demoulius1529 I have wondered the same thing too. I always wanted a gauntlet with raptorial claws on the digits that resembled a bird of prey's "talons", even though it's for the hand. In battle, I think it would add little to the sword or other elongated weapon one is wielding, but if one was otherwise unarmed, it would be a great thing to have.

    If the Shadiversity team ever gets access to a Discovery Channel level budget, I'd love to see them try these weapons again on realistic gel dummy human analogues, as well as a chainsaw (Leatherface), a Buck 120 bowie knife (Ghostface), and a barber's razor (Sweeney Todd). I think the 3 main categories that should be judged are Lethality (can this weapon quickly dispatch a victim right before he/she escapes), Fear Factor (how gory/pain-inducing this weapon can be when used to maim trapped or fleeing victims), and Practicality (how manageable is it to wield or stow this weapon while chasing down a victim or sneaking through a building/forest to catch the victim unawares)

  • @schizoidboy

    Something to consider here is that in many slasher films the killers have a tendency to improvise. Michael Meyers in Halloween II often improvised with other items as weapons. He was in a hospital and he dispatched people with a syringe, scalpel, cord for strangling, a hot tub, a blood transfusion needle and tube, and a kitchen knife stolen from an old woman's kitchen. Jason wasn't restricted to machetes (his signature weapon), he could use a spear improvised from a gate, garden tools, and spear guns to name a few.

    Skallagrim made a similar video a while back. Two of them in a row actually. The way you are using the hook makes a big difference. Skall points out that if you use a hook with a horizontal grip like usual, you run into the issue of the hook digging in between your fingers, limiting how much power can be put into your strikes.

    I'd like you to revisit the axe as a weapon by using the blunt side of it. In the spirit of Halloween, one of the scariest serial murders that took place in america was done by an axe wielder, but he used the blunt side. The man said that he did this because otherwise the axe would be more likely to get stuck in what he was swinging at. So I think in terms of deadly/horror, I'd go axe if you included this. Otherwise, machete is likely the most versatile and deadliest.

But other horror movie villains profit somehow from the fear, and I guess a weapon like a knife or the hook, which doesn't (have to) kill instantly would be better for those.

    Something I'd love to see you guys do: debate the ultimate anti-vampire weapon, operating on the assumptions that vampires can only be disabled by either severing the spinal cord (which for the sake of argument should be assumed to be temporary if the neck is not completely severed) or disrupting the heart (same deal, temporary unless fully removed), resulting in a debate over the best weapons to decapitate and/or open a rib cage.

    The point about the machete being a slashing weapon makes it scarier than the knife to me, the idea of a victim getting cut multiple times, having a blood trail and a ‘survivable’ wound makes the victim weaker and the stakes higher… whereas an axe or knife is going to incapacitate the victim from the first stab and be a one encounter kill

    I would say Axe or Machete on top of being blunt force and messy if you are hiding the axe can be used to break through doors, and the machete is messy too, SO fast, has reach, huge cutting surface and is hard to block with house hold items both would be terrifying and hard to deal with

    Keep in mind that long heavy machetes like that, and especially two-handed machetes, can also be brutal when the blunt side is used, or when doing a mix of slashing or thrusting with the back edge of the tip. You can absolutely knock branches off trees by using the blunt side of a machete even when the sharp side will not go through them.

    Yeah it depends on what you're after, as a slasher. Efficient killing in one hit? Machete. Are multiple quick hits okay? Knife. Close quarters, from stealth? Also knife. Are you after prolonged pain, or shock factor? Hook. Are your opponents defending themselves, including armor or just closing doors on you? Axe. There's so much overlapping there too, like if you go for the throat a knife is also entirely capable of one-shotting someone.

    What Tyranth is referring to is generally known as a Meat Hook. Though it is known by different names as well. Used in a variety of Industries. In the Meatpacking Industry it is used to help move around large pieces of meat or to hang pieces of meat in a commercial freezer. It is used in the Commercial Fishing Industry and by everyday Anglers, and also has a variant that was made specifically for this Industry. A large hook is attached to a long stick or pole. Called a Pole Hook, Fishing Gaffer, or Billhook, it is used to bring a fish up on to the Boat Deck.

    There is one more weapon to consider as well and plays a BIG part. The Killer themselves. Another interesting one is where the Killer doesn't use any specific weapon at all. A Killer who not only improvises, but is seasoned is the deadliest, only because they are able to make thought out decisions and have that built up through trial and error the more effective and efficient ways and use of implements to make their kills. Those would be the ones to watch out for, as their flexibility and confidence in not just their skill, but their confidence they can use anything to make a kill with high proficiency.

    For sheer horror inflicted on others, the hook is really the winner. I would place knives 2nd and the axe and machete tie for 3rd. I've seen a lot of horror movies over the decades and the more 'personal' the weapon the more horrific it is. Although is must be pointed out that almost anything can be a horror weapon from a hammer to a torch used for sweating copper pipes.

  • @Velindian

    Hook if sneak attack, Knife if really close quarters, Axe if you have something to block with, and Machete if you don't have much protection. If you can have 2 at once Hook + Machete or Knife is probably the worst. Replace Machete with Axe when dual wielding if the slasher villain is strong enough to not be slowed by one-handing the Axe too much.
    Also, press 5 and thank me later.

    Stabs can also be surprisingly survivable. I heard somewhere that even getting stabbed directly in the heart is still survivable if you get prompt medical attention a third of the time. And everyones heard the news stories of someone getting stabbed and not even noticing, or getting stabbed dozens of times and surviving.

  • @peterterry7918
    @peterterry7918 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think that the most effective would be the COMBINATION of the knife and hook. Concealment for stealth. Control with one to be strategic with the other. In a fight, you can distract or parry with one and wound with the other. The ax and machete are best when there is enough space to swing.

    So if you want to be scary and a little bit stealthy, with a concealable weapon, go for the knife for efficiency or hook for terror. If you want to look more menacing and efficient, go for the machete. But if speed isn't your priority or you're strong enough to run with an axe, definitely go for the axe. Even a blunt one.

    The important thing about *any* improvised weapon, is if you can use it effectively, without needing to modify it. Baseball bats (and their kin), axes, machetes, and other such things that you can just grab, and swing in either a smashing or chopping motion, tend to be really good. Thrusting, in a stabbing motion, might cause an issue or two.
    On the plus side, plenty are already battle-tested, and proven.
