I have noticed every once in a while some crochet videos that have done the yarn under. I assumed it was just another way to make a single crochet, possibly a regional difference. Thank you for the great information on this difference. Sometimes I do desire tighter stitches. I will be practicing this stitch for sure to get used to the slight difference.
I know people are saying it's all about tension, but I find this to be really helpful either way. I do like the neat appearance of the yarn under technique so I’ll give this a try for my next project. Thanks for sharing this with us.
@@tashanahmclean7608 my opinion is that tension comes with practice but it’s not the only thing. Yarn under definitely helped me, give it a go and let me know how you’re getting along with it 😉
I yarn over.... It's been a lot later, and I still love myself. Lol❤❤❤ But seriously, yarn under is too difficult. The hook doesn't catch it as easily. Maybe it's a left handed thing, idk. But I am happy with what I make.
@@SilentNoMore64 Absolutely, don’t take my title too seriously 😊 yarn over is a great alternative and you are right, you need to love what you make and I’m happy you have found a technique that works better for you ❤️ That’s what I love about crochet as a handmade craft.
@@ItsCraftsyM Please believe me when I say I was merely having fun with your title, and not MAKING fun of it. I thought it was cute. i love your video and your insight.💐
This has been an eye opener for me, I’ve only just realised that I do yarn over and I’ve often wondered why my stitches are so loose . I will give the yarn under a try.
Honestly, if you have good stitch tension, yarn over can look equally as good as yarn under. I use both techniques depending on what pattern I'm doing, and I find that I like both equally. I don't have problems with holes or looseness at all with yarn over. Good yarn, good stitch tension, and above all the right hook size is key.
I was going to comment on the hook size too. I’ve found that with the right tension and using a smaller hook size than called for tends to give me really neat and tight stitches.
what do you do for a decrease? and also, what about a half double crochet stitch or even a double crochet stitch? Does this yarn under work with other stitches or just with a single crochet stitch??
@@deeCee2646 for a decrease I would do the same by bringing the yarn under the hook on your first pull through the stitch. In my latest video on how to make a ball I show how to make an invisible decrease with yarn under. Regarding hdc or dc, yes you can yarn under them as well, but I usually don’t as for those stitches I prefer the fabric to be more drapy and yarn over works better for me in those cases
Thank you very much! I just discovered this method and was stressing about it because I really want to do amigurumi. It feels alien to my hands right now, but I'm sticking at it :3
I know!!! Yarn under felt so odd the first time I tried it. And I had to keep checking each stitch as I was often alternating yarn under and yarn over 🤦♀️ But eventually it will become very natural. And now it’s my favourite way to make amigurumi. Just hang in there 😉 and good luck with your amigurumi 👋❤️
I’m glad it was useful 😊 I feel there’s no real right or wrong in crochet, as long as you like the appearance of your stitches and final project. This is my favourite way to yarn under. How were you doing yours?
Weird bc the yarn over makes a cross shape that makes the projects much neater than yarn under. For year I was crocheting yarn under but later on found out about yarn over . But I'm also crocheting wrong side out with more delicate dolls now 😊
It is true 👍 with the stitches being so tight and the movement being shorter you will use less yarn overall your piece with yarn under will look smaller
@ItsCraftsyM and what is your accent, if you don't mind me asking. I'm trying to figure it out. I love accents. I'm from Western Canada, and Canada has many, many different accents. 🇨🇦✌️

Wow. Apparently I've been doing yarn under for decades. It's just what I found most comfortable with the way I move my hook.
I taught myself to crochet decades ago and always did yarn under, not realizing there was a difference. It wasn't until about a year ago I realized.
Thanks! I was wondering why my crochet was looking lumpy, and this fixed it

How were you doing yours?
So, you use combo of under and over to complete the single crochet. I thought one would use under only! Thank you!
@@those_eyes yes I do, but you can do combination of those, I prefer yu/yo as it’s easier on the wrists and I fell the yu/yu looks very similar anyway
