Back in my military days we had to use "cleaning barrels" which was a 55 gallon drum tilted at about 35 degrees and half full of sand. Just put the muzzle of your 9mm/45acp/m16/m60 in the barrel and pull the trigger to make sure it's clear....occasionally some Gomer would cook one off.

If you push a stick into sand slowly it will penetrate, but when a object is moving very fast the sand will act like a solid substance because it can't move very quickly.

What i was told in the military was that the goverment Springfield armory looked at the powder charge in the 30.06 M2 ball around 1955 and noted that the newer powders they were using did not fill the 30.06 case.
Then someone ask if the 30.06 could be shortened so the powder charge used at that time filled the case.
This was how the .7.62/308 came about.
having the full case made the powder burn better and cut a little weight and the length of the ammo
they tested the new 7.62 ammo in converted M1 garands and M1919 Browning machine guns and found it worked better then 30.06 because it took a shorter stroke of the action.

I did a test similar to this at the shooting place I used to go to-now houses there.Found some 5 gal drywall mud buckets there-filled them with the dirt and shot them with 30-06,308,6.5 swedish, and 12 ga shotgun slugs-lead and sabot copper.NONE went thru the buckets. The rifles were full jacket and soft point. All bullets deformed or expanded. Some of the Remington Copper solid expanding sabot slugs DIDn't expand-you could almost load the bullets adn shoot them again. The lead full bore foster and Brenneke shotgun bullets were well expanded-Foster ones a flat lead disc!6.5 full jacket military bullets were almost intact. The full jacket 30-06 are GREAT for my M1 Garand! My Garand would shoot any loads I loaded in it.Loved hearing the last shot empty clip PING as the clip ejected from the rifle.Load the clip and go again!Used 150-180,220Gr in the Garand just fine.

Regardless of any difference between the performance of the calibers this shows that in a gunfight being behind buckets of sand is a good place to be. I wasn't surprised to see the bullets stopped, after all there's a reason sandbags have been used for ever around military installations, but what did surprise me was that even though all the bullet energy was dumped into the bucket, it barely moved. That totally debunks the movie idea of people being blown across the room with the force of the impact from a bullet.

Love your channel. Only wish we could have the same amount of fun here in the uk. We have no ammo shortage here and our ammo is now cheaper than the states for the first time. Are the shops putting the prices up and taking advantage of shooters or are the manufactures charging more out there.

Appreciate you watching. I think it is a little of both. Manufacturing are charging more and shops are charging more. • @adamr9720

I remember back in the cadets in 1984 when I was skinny and almost good looking the Sargent saying 12 inches of compact earth will stop a rifle round, 18 to 24 inches is always better but 12 will do it if you don't have much time to dig your slit trench and build up the sides.

Great video as always. I really like the caliber 308 and also the caliber 30 carbaine. Make a video after the caliber 30 carbine of the legendary weapon 30 M1 carbaine ....

I like it, Can we get WTW to shoot some coffee cans or coffee bags these days full of sand. It might be another way of a doing a paper plate like comparison for bigger energy rounds. 🤔

Idea for next video. Compare 12 gauge loaded with Hornady 300gr sst , muzzleloader 245gr power belt with 150gr pyrodex, .350 Legend Winchester deer season xp, and .45-70 325gr....3 shot grouping at 150 yards and ballistics gel at 150 yards. This will decide the best weapon for deer hunting OHIO’s gun season!!

Maybe that's why we make bunkers out of sandbags. Three deep will stop a 12.7. Four will stop a 20mm. I have seen a RPG stop in sandbags and not go off.
