  • I'm always up for something new and learning how to anodize at home has been on my list for quite a while. I still have a way to go at learning how to make improve and hone my process but I am quite happy with the result on this restoration.

    Damn. That's tidy. Good job! I've just dropped a couple of frames off to have a "Cerakote" treatement and while I was in the shop they had some AMAZING faded rims on display that turned out to be anodised (bronze to black). I was told how the finish of the metal needs to be absolutely perfect, or as close to, to get a good anodising finish so I can appreciate the prep work you've put in there!

    The best way not to keep making the same mistakes over and over again is to get them over and done with in the initial investigative phase. These videos are always really helpful. Many thanks for taking your time to make them.

  • @Asphaltsquadron

    I used to work for an outdoor lighting manufacture and in the late 80's early 90's just prior to powder-coating, we anodized everything. The fixture housings, arms and pole/bases. What I learned early on was you never want to hit the parts with a sand blaster because any porosity in the aluminum is going to capture more of the dye like a sponge thus making it blotchy. Sanding and polishing is not going to remedy this. You dont want to polish it because it seals up the aluminum too much, nor will you get in the tight spots and it will come out blotchy. The best anodize jobs are on freshly machined or extruded aluminum. Another happy medium would be to tumble the parts in a stone/chemical bath, as that's something else we used to do. This leaves the surface with a very even constancy thus allowing the dye to be even. And no, you cant anodize cast aluminum, only raw, machined, or extruded. Sorry so long, just brought back a lot of memories. Keep it up, you'll get it! (edit) I wonder if a far less evasive soda blast and then stone tumble would do the trick better?

      What method would you use to re-color a new anodized aluminum bike part? I have three small covers and levers that I want to change the color from blue to black and would have preferred buying some from the manufacture (FOX), but they only make them in blue which does not fit the bike's color scheme. Thanks!!

    • @Asphaltsquadron
      @Asphaltsquadron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@em1355 Easy, just have them powder coated.

    • @Asphaltsquadron
      @Asphaltsquadron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@em1355 Also. are you sure its anodize? Very few use real anodize anymore. New powder coat process and colors look very similar to anodize. Even if it is you can powder coat right over anodize. We used to do it all the time for marine grade climates.

    • @em1355
      @em1355 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Asphaltsquadron Thank you so much for the quick response! This was very helpful, maybe basic for you, but when it comes to painting aluminum (actually any type of bike, car, or anything else) I am totally at a loss, therefore I have been viewing countless videos and asking for advice and I am glad that I did because you made it seem much more possible. Thanks again!!

    • @em1355
      @em1355 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Asphaltsquadron Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it!! I will double-check, but I looked at the full description (new bike 2021 with Fox 34 Performance Fork) and it says anodized, but will definitely double-check. The Powder Coat idea was mentioned by one of your commenters below and since both of you mention this, then I will look at this method. Great video, I really picked up quite a bit, although typically I don't have the time (inclination) to paint bike parts, in this case, after discussing with the manufacture (Fox - weren't very helpful) they stuck to their one color (blue) for caps/levers even though black is a better color scheme match for the majority of the bikes. Sorry, too much information, but at least you were willing to provide alternate solutions. Thanks again!!

    I've never done any sand blasting, do you have to be careful around threaded parts to avoid damaging the threads? or is the sand blasting not powerful enough in this case?

    • @roythearcher
      @roythearcher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sand blasting should not affect threads too much but it depends a lot on the material, type of media and air pressure used. An agressive media or too high a pressure can, on softer materials, alter the size and in severe cases effectively wear it away so if you're not sure, best to mask it off!

  • @roythearcher
    @roythearcher 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    As you go, you will also find that different aluminium alloys will have a slightly different result depending on the elements used. Some work better than others and some are really stubborn requiring a different strength of electrolite and voltage to work. Also, consistancy can be difficult and no two batches are ever exactly the same!
    I look forward to what you're going to put these on!

    My 8 year old niece wants flames on the 1965 Schwinn Stingray I'm building for her (was my old bike in the 90's)
    I'm not an airbrush pro, and I think the decals are kinda lame....
    Do you think there's a way I could mix orange and red spraypaint over a black frame to make it glow like it's on fire without literal flames???
    Wonder if you would tackle that challenge at all on a bike or how you would approach it :)
    Or if you don't make a painting tutorial perhaps you know of one I would find useful??
    Your videos are inspiring. I love watching the restorations. I used clean up and build up old frames I found and this got me back into it after 10 years of stagnation :)

I have three small covers and levers that I want to change the color from blue to black and would have preferred buying some from the manufacture (FOX), but they only make them in blue which does not fit the bike's color scheme. I asked them if they would sell me non-colored ones, but they won't, so I am stuck with three ugly FOX covers/Levers that do not match the bike color scheme. Don't ask me why Fox does not reconsider their color scheme, so am looking for another solution. Thanks!!

    What I also liked about your video, which says something about you as well, is that you want to try different color schemes with your bike that match what you want versus the manufacturer's color schemes, which in my viewpoint (FOX covers/levers) do NOT match the color of their front or rear suspension systems.

    General protip from a chemist: when describing solutions or mixtures it would be nice to state the final concentration of the solution rather than stating that your bath was "diluted n times" or so, because we have no idea what concentration you started from. Sulfuric acid here is a good example, being sold at various concentrations ranging from 20 %-ish to almost neat.

    FWIW I was a bike mechanic back when these cranks first came to market and, believe it or not, I saw two sets of these cranks fail when guys ran them without granny gears. The reason was because the material around the granny gear mounting holes is too thin therefore failed when there was no chainring bolt in the hole to support the load on the spider. The solution we found was to run a chainring bolt in the hole even though there is no chainring present. Definitely not as cool looking but better than a broken set of beautifully classic cranks.

    I have never done this before so I am in no way an expert. My thoughts though is maybe when you polish it up it makes the dye less likely to absorb into the item? The dye needs to get into the pores of the aluminum right? Again no where near an expert just a thought. Great job sir.
