- One of the fun things to do in Alaska is, so called, Razor Clamming. Being an excellent treat, The Pacific Razor Clam is a prized target for all who love to forage the outdoors for a tasty meal. Learn how to find and get this mollusk out of the sand with Bill White - an expert at Razor Clamming.

Here is how a country boy finds clams. Take you bowling ball with you to the mud flats. Drop the ball on the mud and note where the water spouts up out of the mud. Dig there to get your clam.

What about using salt...pour salt into the hole, and sit back and wait a spell...the clam with pop out of the sand...to escape the burning salt on its membranes!
It’s too bad these beaches are closed due to low clam numbers.(not from over harvest) I really would like to get out there and do some digging again. It really a good time!

Looked to me like you snagged some steamers! Steamer clams generally have a more oval shape, where razor clams are long skinny guys
i seen another video where they pour salt in the hole and it came out by itself try it out and let me know if it works

Why do soam people use shovels and those core borer things, but othar people djust sprinkle salt over the hole and the clam comes right up and they grab it? Seams like a lot less work.
If I'm not mistaken, in some places using salt is illegal.

we catch those by the thousands, here on the East Coast. Its done by boat, with what is called an elevator.
Clam is free in Alaska but everything else in the grocery store is double or triple premium.

So, how long before thes clams are over-exploited and decline?
They just won't grow as large, and people will stop clamming recreationally for so little reward.
Where I used to live on the coast, people would clam and crab every year. Sometimes there were a lot, sometimes there werent. But it's been going on much longer than the twenty years I've been alive. And I haven't yet heard about the razor clams being in any danger.

You can make one out of pvc pipe. Very inexpensive and easy to make.
i went to maine clams r everywhere
its much faster by pouring salt over the hole and pouring water over that salt. The clam will come up

You are required to take every clam you dig, regardless of it's condition.
Pouring salt on a clam is the same as pouring one on a slug. It's not legal.

Still a waste of time. All you need is some salt, pour it into the hole, and throw some water down the hole and the critter will come up immediately on it's own, then you just pluck it with your hand.
